Eliza was 16 when she married Joseph in the Church of England at Beechworth the minister officiating was the Rev. W.L.C. Howard . The marriage witnesses were William Merrick Oates, Eliza's brother and Charles Henry, the husband of Joseph's sister Emily.
Joseph was 25 years old and a miner by profession. Eliza also came from a mining family, her father William Martin Oates was a miner in Eldorado ( one of the original McEvoy shareholders). Some of her sisters also married miners.
The Eldorado MUIOOF lodge was an important part of life for Joseph Hollow and many of his relatives by marriage. Joseph Hollow was a founding member (Member No. 2) in the lodge from 1867 to 1876. His name disappears from the lodge records at this time, this is possibly when he left Eldorado. W.H. Bawden and Charles Henry, brothers in law, were also founder members and two other brothers in law joined soon after the lodge commenced, James Dunstan in December 1867 and Edward Visick in April 1871. George Merrick Oates, a brother of Eliza Oates, Joseph Hollow's wife, was a member as was John Hollow, Joseph's cousin.
Joseph Hollow was paid a funeral donation of 10/-/- after his wife died, the lodge as provided members with sickness and death benefits as well as friendship within the fraternity.
Alfred Hollow, Joseph's son was also a member of the lodge and is shown in lodge regalia in a photograph in the Eldorado museum. He was last recorded at a meeting in November 1893, he may have moved to Rutherglen at this time.
Eliza Jane Hollow nee Oates was already deceased at the time of her father's death, she had died at the age of 22 years on 3rd June, 1873. The death Certificate records "effusion of the brain" as the cause of death, she had been ill for a week prior to her death.
After his wife's death Joseph apparently moved to Queensland and his children were looked after by the family. They would have been only five, three, and one year old when Eliza died. Alfred was looked after by his grand parents, William went to Edith Oates, an Aunt in Eldorado and Joseph was looked after by his aunt Lucy Allen who then lived at Byawatha just outside Eldorado.
In 1899 Joseph's occupation was listed as "engine driver" on Alfred, his son's marriage certificate. Joseph senior's obituary has him living in Queensland in 1905 and the probate papers list his place of residence as Charters Towers, Qld.
Joseph died in the Croydon, Qld. hospital on the 28/11/1918, the entry in the hospital records lists his occupation as "engine driver".
William Martin Oates married Mary Anne Sprague and had a family of three boys and five girls. The first four children were probably born in the parish of Kenwyn, Cornwall. Although he worked as a superintendent of copper mines in Jamaica and Italy before coming to Australia so some of his children may have been born in these countries.
An older brother of William's, George Merrick Oates (b ~1807) came out to South Australia in 1849 with his wife and two children. He was a farmer at Port Wakefield, his son Phillip Merrick Oates was a miner and farmer. Details are in the Biographical Index of South Australians.
This brother could have attracted William to Australia. Although the fact that the family moved quickly to Beechworth and within two years William was a shareholder together with Joseph Hollow in the McEvoy mine suggests they may have been encouraged to Australia by the Hollows or their aquaintances.
William, Mary and four children, George(7), Eliza(5), Mary(2) and an infant daughter, arrived in Adelaide aboard the "Royal Albert" on 29th March 1857. they travelled to Beechworth via river boat up the Murray to Wahgunyah taking twelve weeks, then they spent another three weeks travelling by horse team from there to Spring Creek. William Oates secured a claim at Pennyweight Flat and worked it for eighteen monthes before moving to Eldorado and the McEvoy mine.
William's wife Mary Ann died aged 45 years in 1865.
George Merrick Oates b ~1849 m Mary Ann Glaves
in 1874. He was to die on 13/4/1889 in a railway accident at Junee N.S.W.
The accident was reported in the Junee newspaper as follows:-
SERIOUS RAILWAY ACCIDENT IN NEW SOUTH WALES
TWO LIVES LOST
A serious railway accident, resulting in the loss of two lives and great
damage to the rolling stock, occurred near Junee on Saturday morning. The
mail train left Junee at a quarter-past 10 o'clock for Hay and when about
two miles from the station ran into a mob of cattle. The train, which consisted
of six trucks loaded principally with hay. a second class carriage, and
a composite carriage was travelling round the curve at the rate of about
30 miles an hour. The cattle were on the culvert at the time , and 22 of
them were literally cut to pieces by the engine and the trucks as they
travelled along the rails, or fell on either side. the engine went down
a bank 10 feet deep to the left of the line, while the trucks were smashed
to pieces on the right side of the embankment. The passengers in the carriage
were saved from a similar fate by the breaking of the couplings, and none
of the passengers were seriously hurt, although two complain of being hurt.
Mr H. R. Turner, of Junee, was the first passenger to leave the train after
the accident. He found George M. Oates, the enginedriver, lying two yards
from the engine, with one leg torn completely off and in a dying condition.
Fergussen, firemen, was under the engine dead. The cattle which caused
the accident strayed from a paddock, and were missed just before the accident.
The owner went in search of them and while endeavouring to get them off
the line saw the train approaching. He tried to attract the attention of
the engine driver, who was oiling the engine, but his efforts failed. On
Oates body was found a paper with the following words- " Cattle straying
on line between Junee Junction and Old Junee ; be careful." Oates and Fergussen
were both steady married men.
Later particulars with regard to the railway accident at Junee state
that there were ten instead of six goods wagons on the train, that the
whole train was derailed, and that the permanent way was torn up for a
considerable distance. The warning about the cattle being on the line was
given to Oates before he started ; the paper found in the driver's pocket
being written by the stationmaster at Junee, who new the cattle to be on
the line.
Eliza Jane Oates (1851-1873)
Eliza Jane b ~1851 parish of Kenwyn, Cornwall, married Joseph Hollow. (see previous details)
Caroline Emily Oates (1853-1939)
Caroline Emily Oates b ~1853 married Edward Visick in N.S.W. in 1873, they lived at Eldorado for some time, Edward was certainly a miner and was also a mine manager at Eldorado for a time . He gave evidence at the inquest into the McEvoy disaster in 1896. Edwin Visick is listed as a mine manager in various mines in Rutherglen from 1900 to 1908. Caroline died in Cheltenham aged 86 in 1939. Caroline's birth is a mystery as she wasn't listed in the ship's register but according to her death record she was born about 1853.
Mary Ann Oates (1854-?)
Mary Ann Oates b ~1854 parish of Kenwyn, Cornwall, married Edwin Bull Lemin, a miner, in 1878. she was 24 and had been housekeeping for her father. The wedding was held at her father's house and the witnesses were her brother George and his wife Mary Ann.
Susan Merrick Oates (1857-1930)
Susan Merrick Oates b ~1857 d 1930 I presume she was born in Victoria although I have not found the record yet, she was born the year the family came to Australia so her birth may have been registered in S.A. or it may not have been recorded officially at all. She married John Hickey and was living at Wangaratta in 1904 when her father William died.
William Oates (1858-1858)
William Oates b 1858 at Spring Creek near Beechworth died in infancy.
William John Oates (1860 - ?)
William John Oates b 1860 at Beechworth, he married Emily Elizabeth Hartmann in 1885.
Edith Oates (1862-?)
Edith Oates b 1862, at the time of her fathers death in 1904 Edith was referred to as Mrs Oates, a widow. She had married Charles Hicks Oates in 1897, Charles died in 1902 aged 32.
They had eight children :-
William Bawden was one of the original shareholders in the McEvoy mine. In the various records he is listed as miner and mine manager on his death certificate his occupation is given as engine driver.
The 1871 Rate book listed him as owning a cottage and garden in Eldorado. Their house in Eldorado was called "The Elms". Fanny was appointed the post mistress at Eldorado in 1913, the town's first post mistress, and held that position for ten years. She lived with her unmarried daughter, May, at Eldorado and later at Thornbury.
The obituaries of Fanny and William give further information of their lives.
The memorial on monument hill at Eldorado is to their only son who died of bubonic plague on ship on the way home from the Boer war.
Children:-
John Charles HENRY b 1867 Beechworth
Catherine Jane HENRY b 1868 Eldorado
William Frederick HENRY b 1871 Eldorado
Hubert Mc Adam HENRY b 1873 Eldorado
Children:
Alfred John DUNSTAN b 1866 Beechworth
Ethel Bertha Lucy DUNSTAN b 1872 Eldorado
James Dunstan was the manager of the McEvoy mine around 1970-71, in the 1871 Rate book he is listed as a miner with cottage and garden. He left Eldorado to go to the Cobar copper mine in NSW. At the time of Joseph Snr death Elizabeth Dunstan's address was Eldorado but in the Probate papers her address was given as Sydney.
Note the Alfred has been added to Charles' name, it could have been out of respect for the memory of his younger brother Alfred who died at the age of seven. There is a record of a Charles Hollow , Engineer, Newtown, (part of Beechworth) in Bailerieres Official Post Office Drectory of Victoria, years 1868-1875, another record has Alfred Charles living at Lord St. Beechworth in January 1871.
The marriage record for the first marriage has his name as Charles Hollow, The record of the second marriage has the name Alfred Charles. Records list Alfred Charles, Station Master, Allingham St. Golden Square, also Marjorie Hollow (electoral Roll 1912). Charles' address listed as Bendigo in Joseph snr's obituary 1905. Dad says Uncle Col used to stay with Uncle Charles at Caulfield.
Alfred Charles (father = Joseph , mother = Jane Thomas ) died at Glenhuntly aged 75 in 1929 but by my reckoning he should have been about 80. There is no record of children from either marriage.
I have assumed the Charles living in Beechworth was our Charles, I have not come across another Charles from the other Hollow families.
Children: Lewis THOMAS born in 1877 at Eldorado.
Lewis Evan Thomas was a Reverend, a book that Ailie Burgil has was presented to him on his leaving England is dated Sept. 6 1874.
Lucy's second marriage was to Anthony ALLEN in 1899.
Anthony Allen was a miner in Eldorado he is listed in the 1871 Rate book as owning a cottage and garden. He was a member of the jury that inquired into the McEvoy mine disaster of 1895. I think this may have been his second marriage too. He died at Eldorado in 1912 aged 76. Lucy died in Cheltenham in 1922 aged 65. Sometimes Allen is used, sometimes Allan.
