HANKS, Nathan Virgil - Nathan Virgil Hanks, 75, of Johnson, died Sunday morning at City Hospital from a stroke he suffered Saturday. Funeral services were held yesterday at the Callison-Russell chapel in Springdale with the Rev. Allen Brickey of the Baptist church in Springdale conducting. Burial was in the Stuckey cemetery in Johnson. Pallbearers were Ollie Crum, Edgar Bookout, Joe Reed, Tom Rothrock, Harold Cassett, Luther Stampher. Mr. Hanks was born Oct. 14, 1872 in Richfield, Ill. HANKS, Melvin - (from Johnson) Capt. G.P. Hanks received word yesterday that his son, Melvin Hanks, was murdered in Big Horn county, Wyoming on July 17. Melvin was working on a ranch about 100 miles from Basin, Wyoming but Capt. Hanks has received no particulars concerning the manner or cause of his son's death. The murderer has been captured and is in jail at Basin where he will be tried at the October term of court. Melvin had visited his father here several times and his many friends around Johnson will regret to learn of his untimely death in faraway Wyoming. Capt. Hanks has sent to the Sheriff of Big Horn county for full details of the tragedy. [The Springdale News 10 Aug 1906]

HEARN, Mrs. Amanda - Mrs. Amanda Hearn, 83, resident of 1216 South Crutcher street, died October 23 at 12:45 a.m. at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Sterling Bookout, following a long illness. She was born Decemter 25, 1872 at Johnson, Arkansas the daughter of John and Jane Luper Maxey. The widow of the late Hiram Hearn, who died in 1914, she is a member of the New Hope Baptist church. Survivors are four daughters, Mrs. Minnie West, Paris, Ark., Mrs. Lula Montgomery, Castleford, Idaho, Mrs. Daisy Barron, Springdale, Mrs. Anna Brown, Muskogee; three sons, Charlie Hearn, Ed Hearn both of Castleford, Ore., Lee Hearn, address unknown; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Hughes, Springdale, Mrs. Martha Alvis, Ontario, Calif., and Mrs. Corda Peterson of Johnson; 25 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. Funeral servcies will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in Caudle Avenue Baptist church with rev. Roe Matthews officiating. The George Quartet will be in charge of the music. Burial in Stuckey cemetery will be under the direction of Callsion-Sisco Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Harry Howell, Tommie Lockhart, Witt Hayslett, Cheece Hannah, Herbert Eicher and Kenneth Graham. [Springdale News, Oct. 23, 1956]

HENSON, Thomas David - Mr. and Mrs. Bird Henson are mourning the death of their son, Thomas, aged 17 years, who died very suddenly Friday night after a short illness. He was laid to rest in Shady Grove cemetery Saturday evening. [Springdale News 26 Jan 1906]

HENSON, Thomas David - son of Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Henson, was born October 6, 1888 and died January 20, 1906, aged seventeen years, three months and seventeen days. His was indeed a beautiful young life. Tommie, as his friends loved to call him, was in many respects a model home boy, truthful, kind and industrious, never so tired but that he was ready to help father of mother. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. I.M. Phillips at Shady Grove church, after which the remains were laid to rest to await the resurrection morn. A Friend. [Springdale News 2 Feb 1906]

HILL, Roy - Roy Hill, 63-year old Johnson resident and well-known in the Springdale community, having been associated with various canning companies, died at his home in Johnson, Jan. 25, at 11:50 p.m. Mr. Hill was born June 27, 1895, in Sheldon, Mo. Survivors include his wife, Thelma Hill of Johnson; mother, Anna Rachek Park of Sheldon, Mo.; two daughters, Mrs. Lavone Melvin of Joplin, Mo. and Mrs. Dorothy May Stracke of Johnson; five sister, Mrs. Nora Snow of Kansas City, Kan., Mrs. Lillie Milburn of St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. Alta Brooks of Sheldon, Mo., Mrs. Bessie Stoats of Chicago, Ill., and Mrs. Ollie Ehrisman of Los Angeles, Calif., and four grandchildren. Funeral services under direction of Mrs. Dave Ogden of Rogers will be held Jan. 29 at 1 p.m. in the Moore Funeral home chapel at Fayetteville. HUGHES, Charles - Rogers - Charles Hughes, 73, of Rogers died Aug. 16, 1998, at his home. He was born May 16, 1925, in Fayetteville to Ray and Gladys Greathouse Hughes. He was a supervisor for SWEPCO for 39 years until his retirement. He was a Baptist and a Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors incloude his wife, Thelma Hughes, to whom he was married April 20, 1947; four daughters and sons-in-law; Charlene Hagan and John of Fayetteville, Cindy Keeling and Luther of Rogers, Susan Caldwell and John of Kansas City, Mo., and Lynnette Harris and Pat of Rogers; two sisters, Ina Mae Luper of Fayetteille and Elizabeth Kelly of Harrison; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Rogers with burial in Benton County Memotial Park. The Rev. Ben Powell will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Burns Funeral Home in Rogers. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Hospital, d/o the funeral home.[Springdale News]

HUGHES, Gladys - Gladys Young Hughes, 93, of Fayetteville died October 24, 1991, at Springdale Memorial Hospital. She was born October 7, 1898, in Greathouse Springs, the daughter of Robert Ambrose and Josephine Ethel Good Greathouse. She was a homemaker and a Methodist. She was the widow of Ray Oliver Hughes. Survivors include one sons, Charles R. Hughes of Pea Ridge; two daughters, Ida Mae Luper of Fayetteville and Elizabeth Kelly of Harrison; 10 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sisco Chapel of Springdale with the Rev. Burton A. Miley officiating. Burial will be in Stuckey Cemetery in Johnson. HUGHES, Mary - Mrs. Mary Hughes, the invalid wife of John Hughes who lives near Stony Point, died Saturday night after an illness of about seven years. Mrs. Hughes had been entirely helpless a great portion of this time. She was buried at Mt. Comfort Sunday evening. [Washington County Review] 16 Aug 1906]

HUGHES, Mary - The long years of suffering and helplessness endured by Mrs. Mary Hughes ended last Saturday night and she was buried at Mount Comfort Sunday evening. Mrs. Hughes has been an invalid for a number of years. She died at the old home place near Stony Point where John and Mary Hughes had lived so many years and from whence their children had all departed to homes of their own in other lands - a son in Texas, a daughter in Kansas, a son in the Indian Territory and a daughter in Missouri. HUGHES, Mrs. Mary Jane - Mrs. Mary Jane Hughes, 101; of Springdale, died 8 November in a Fayetteville nursing home. Born 15 October 1878, in Springdale; she was the daughter of John and Sarah Jane (Luper) Maxey and was a member of the Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Ina Thompson of Lincoln and Mrs. Ada Harris of Springdale; 12 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; 43 great great grandchildren and 2 great, great, great grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Nelson Funeral Home, Fayetteville. Burial will be in Stuckey Cemetery. [Nov 8, 1979, Springdale News]

INMAN, C.H. - A telephone message to The News yesterday morning from Johnson announced the death of Prof. C.H. Inman of that place which occurred between three and four o'clock. Mr. Inman lived alone and coming in from his work Tuesday night he ate some meat that is thought ot have been tainted, causing ptomaine poisoning which resulted in his death. Mr. Inman had resided in the vicinity of Johnson for more than twenty years past and although somewhat eccentric he was held in high esteem by those who knew him. He is survived by a wife and a number of children, none of whom were at home, the wife having been living in St. Louis for some two years past. When informed that his end was near Mr. Inman requested that his son, Henry, be appointed administrator of his estate which is valued from $5,000 to $8,000. Henry was in the signal corps of the U.S. Army when last heard from and his present whereabouts are unknown. [The Springdale News 18 Oct 1907]

JOHNSON, Ethel - Ethel M. Johnson, 81, of Springdale died Feb 22, 1993, at Springdale Memorial Hospital. She was born June 28, 1911, in Madison County, the daughter of Noah G. and Mattie Logue Duncan. She was a homemaker and a member of Phillips Chapel Free Will Baptist Church in springdale. She was the widow of Autus A. Johnson, to whom she was married Nov. 3, 1928. Survivors include one son, Dewey Johnson of Springdale; two brothers, Mirl Duncan of Bend, Ore., and Earl Duncan of Colfax, Calif.; one sister, Marglene M. Watkins of Inola, Okla; two grandchildren, and three greatgrandchildren. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sisco Chapel of Springdale with the Rev. Cecil Garrison and the Rev. JOHNSON, Hugh L. - The entire neighborhood was shocked to learn Thursday morning that Hugh L. Johnson was lying at the point of death and not expected to recover from a paralytic stroke which had affected his brain a few hours before. Drs. Cowgill and Gregg were hurriedly summoned but medical aid could not avail against such a serious attack and death relieved his tired spirit at 3:12 Thursday evening. Hurried messages had been sent to his relatives and those who live nearby were here when the end came. His brother, J.O. Johnson, who resides in Ft. Smith, reached here a short time afterwards, as did his sister, Mrs. Joe Arnett of Arnett, Ark. Mrs. Ina Sisk, a sister residing in Oxford, Miss., arrived Saturday morning. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Johnson, were making an overland trip to Oxford, Miss. and their whereabouts could not be learned for two days during which time messages were sent to a number of towns along their supposed route and they were found late Friday night at Newport, Ark. They arrived here Tuesday and burial services were held Wednesday at the family cemetery near Harris. H.L. Johnson was about 35 years of age and had been in the merchandise and milling business here for the past 15 years, during which time a large circle of friends had learned to esteem him for many noble traits and their loving sympathy goes out to the sorrowing relatives who mourn the going of Hugh. JOHNSON, Mamie - Mamie Wilson Johnson, 84, of Springdale died Feb. 14 at Springdale Memorial Hospital. She was born May 17, 1903, in Baldwin, the daughter of David L. and Minerva Jane Strain Wilson. She was a homemaker, a lifetime resident of the area and was preceded in death by her husband, Dayne Johnson, who died in 1979. Survivors include two sons, Leroy Johnson and Lee Johnson, both of Springdale; four daughters, Ina Mae Newberry of Fayetteville, Doris Jean Ferguson and Marie Johnson, both of Springdale and Barbara Jane Gilbert of Johnson; 22 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Moore's Chapel of Fayetteville with the Rev. Glenn Barnes and the Rev. Raymond Martin officiating. Burial will be in Stuckey Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ray Moss, Troy Rhine, Bill Fields, Buron Harp, Tony Hannah and Cleon Gentry.[undated Springdale News clipping]
