BIOGRAPHY: From census records, it appears that Mary lived first with her son, James Madison Girten and then with her daughter Martha, after the death of her husband in 1853.

In the 1870 Union County census she was listed as head of household. Living with her was a Mary Girten, age 70, most likely her mother, Mary Oard.

In the 1900 Union County census, she was listed as head of household. Living with her were a niece, "Tildy" Girten, probably Matilda Ellen Girten, dau. of James Girten and Sarah Mattingly, and a nephew, Sam Girten, probably Samuel Girten, son of James Girten and Sarah Mattingly.

4. Charles GIRTEN (James ) was born about 1796. He died on 3 Jul 1855 in Union Co., Kentucky. He was buried in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, St. Vincent, Union Co., Kentucky.

Charles, his wife Mary Bright, and three of their youngest children, George Edward, Elisha Durbin, and Martha Ellen, all died within a few days of each other, July 3 thru July 8, 1855. Based on initial research, I suspect either a yellow fever or cholera epidemic, but have no direct evidence of this.

Charles married Mary B BRIGHT "Polly" daughter of John Anselm BRIGHT and Teresa CISSELL on 2 Aug 1831 in Union Co., Kentucky. Mary was born on 13 May 1813 in Washington Co., Kentucky. She was christened on 22 May 1813 in Holy Mary Church, Washington Co., Kentucky. She died on 7 Jul 1855 in Union Co., Kentucky. She was buried in Sacred Heart Cemetery, St. Vincent, Union Co., Kentucky.

Thomas served the Confederacy during the Civil War. He enlisted in Johnson's 10th Kentucky Cavalry, aka the "10th Kentucky Partisan Rangers". He enlisted on 23 Aug 1862, in Union Co. and served as a private in F Company. The Kentucky Adjutant General's Report states;

"Liberty, Tenn., Dec. 31, 1862 - This Company was raised in Union County, Ky., and participated in most of the engagements which gave the reputation to the Regiment, which it now enjoys, it was in the battle of Donelson-Rolling Mills, Madisonville, Uniontown, Owensboro, Geiger's Lake and several others of minor importance. It was with General Morgan in his last expedition to Kentucky, and participated in the engagements at Elizabethtown, Bacon Creek and Muldrough's Hill."

6. James Charles GIRTEN (James ) was born on 15 Mar 1804. He died on 1 Jun 1886.

James first appears as head of household in the 1840 Union County census. At that time he was between the ages of 20 and 40 (1800 to 1820). The household also had one female between the ages of 20 and 40 (presumably his wife Jane) and 4 female children under the age of 5.

Sometime between 5 Apr 1841, when Benedict Joseph was baptized in Union County, and 16 Jan 1843, when Teresa Ann was baptized in Graves County, James moved his family to Graves County. The family appears in the 1850 Graves County census.

James married Jane PIERCEALL on 16 Nov 1830 in Union Co., Kentucky. Jane was born in 1814.

They had the following children:

WILL OF WILLIAM C. MATTINGLY

In the name of God amen I William C Mattingly of Union County in the State
of Kentucky being sick but of sound mind and disposing memory make this as my last will and testament, hereby revoking all other or former wills. I wish after my death that my wife Teresa have my farm & all my property to use as she pleases as long as she lives for the support of herself and my son, Thomas. After the death of my wife I wish all of my property sold, including my land. Out of the proceeds of the sale I want Thomas to have one thousand dollars to be put out at interest by a trustee hereafter appointed for his use. At his death the amount not used for his benefit during his lifetime is to revert back to my heirs at law. I also will to my son Thomas the cash notes that I now have on hand to be used by said trustee with and as the $1,000 is directed to be done and to revert at his death in the same way to my heirs, these notes are also to be subject to my wifes control & use if she should need it during her life. I hereby appoint Robert A Spalding Executor of this my last will and also Trustee for my son Thomas & authorize him to sell my land & the coal privilege which I have under the Girtin land & to convey the title to the purchaser- Out of the notes now due me I want my debts paid which are few. Witness my hand this 6th day November 1875
