Generation 2 continued
2. GIUSEPPE "JOSEPH" CALABRESE
was born December 12, 1889 in Provincia di Palermo, Sicilia, Italia (Province of Palermo, Sicily, Italy), in the town of Shavalon or Chevron or Cefalů in Sicly. His parents were born in Italy of Italian descent. His native language was Italian. He spoke Southern Calabrese, a dialect of southern Calabria and Sicily. He was the son of
GIOVANNI ANTONIO CALABRESE and ROSARIA ROSALIA GUERCIO.
Giuseppe "Joseph" Calabrese immigrated alone to America about the age of 16, circa 1906 - 1909.
By 1910 - 1912 he was living in El Paso, Texas in the southwest United States where he would meet his future young bride, ENRIQUETA "ROSA" TRISTÉ. The first name Guiseppe is the Italian form of Joseph, and records were found where he used both names. He was recorded as Giuseppe Calabrese on his marriage license, his marriage record, and on his U.S. World War I Draft registration card. The WW I draft card dated June 5, 1917 in El Paso, Texas recorded that Giuseppe Calabrese was born in Shavalon, Province Palermo, Sicily, Italy his physical description was recorded medium height, medium build, gray eyes, dark brown hair. The draft registration card also recorded that he became a declarant of the United States at the age of 26 on April 18, 1917.
The date of birth for Giuseppe Calabrese varied from record to record. His marriage license dated January 25, 1910, recorded his date of birth December 1888. The WWI draft card dated June 5, 1917 recorded his date of birth April 17, 1891. His Social Security card recorded his date of birth December 12, 1889.
(Dee's note: My great-greandfather, Giuseppe Joseph Calabrese, told me that he was born in the month of December. Due to the language barrier when he lived in El Paso Texas, I think there is a possibility that the birth month of April recorded on his WWI draft card might have been mixed up with the month that he became a declarant.)
GIUSEPPE "JOSEPH" CALABRESE married ENRIQUETA "ROSA" TRISTÉ in the City of El Paso, El Paso County, Texas. She was born between July 11, 1889 - 1891 in Agua Nueva, Chihuahua, Mexico of Spanish descent. Her native language was Spanish. She might have been born at Rancho Agua Nueva, a working ranch since about 1700, of the Agua Nueva Hacienda in Chihuahua, Mexico.
Enriqueta Rose Triste might have been the daughter of FRANCISCO TRISTÉ of Mexico and his wife PALONIA "Pauline" LOSOYA. [Descendant of Losoya or Lozoya of Spain].
Circa 1899, the Triste family immigrated from Chihuahua, Mexico and settled in the city of El Paso in El Paso County, Texas just across the U.S - Mexican border. From a toddler until her teens, Enriqueta Triste (also known as Rose) was raised in El Paso, Texas. When she was about age 13, the shy young girl took an interest in Giuseppe Calabrese who was a barber in El Paso. Rose would peek into the barbershop to watch the young Italian man cutting hair. Giuseppe noticed the attention from young Rose and one particular day when she pressed her nose to the window of the barbershop, he ran out after her and wagged his finger and said "One day imma gonna marry you!" He later did! Their household would be a trilingual blend of Sicilian Calabrese, Spanish and English.
Guiseppe Joseph Calabrese was enumerated as Jose Calabrese in the 1920 U.S. census in the city of El Paso, El Paso County, Texas when his family lived a few blocks from the U.S. Mexican border. From about 1923 onward, he was known as Joseph or Joe Calabrese. He would later tell his children and grandchildren that for a short time he was a deputy sheriff on border patrol at the U.S. - Mexican border, but switched his profession to the tonsorial trade and began what would be his life-long trade as a barber when he settled in El Paso, Texas. Joseph and Rose Calabrese moved to Baltimore City, Maryland between 1922 and 1923 to meet with Joe's younger brothers, Rosario Calabrese and Pietro Peter Calabrese, who came to America from Sicily in the early 1920s. The three Calabrese brothers became barbers in Baltimore. Their brothers Andrea Calabrese and Luigi Calabrese also immigrated from Sicily and would settle in Annapolis, Maryland. Luigi Calabrese and his new wife Carmelina arrived at Ellis Island March 6, 1920.
TIMELINE
A marriage license was first issued to Giuseppe Calabrese and Miss Enriqueta Triste January 25, 1910 in El Paso County, Texas. They were married on April 26, 1915 by Roberto M. Libertini S.J., Assistant Pastor
of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in the city of El Paso, El Paso County, Texas.
(Roberto M. Libertini was born June 8, 1885 in Italy. He immigrated to America about 1911 and from 1915 through at least 1930 he was an Assistant Pastor and Catholic Priest in El Paso, Texas. He was still living in Texas in 1965 and died May 1973. His last known residence was Grand Coteau, Saint Landry County, Louisiana, U.S.A.)
In March 1913 Joe and Rose Triste Calabrese were living in California where their first son Charles Calabrese was born.
From April 1915 through January 1922 they were living in the City of El Paso, Texas where sons Joseph, John and Frank were born.
The 1920 US Census shows that on January 12, 1920 Jose (Joseph) and Rose Calabrese were neighbors with Francisco Triste & family living on S. Florence Street in the city of El Paso, El Paso County, Texas. They lived less than one mile from the Rio Grande River and the border of Mexico.
In 1922, Joe and Rosie Triste Calabrese moved from El Paso, Texas to Baltimore, Maryland where their youngest children, Sadie, Saro and Manuel were born. Rose and Joseph Calabrese celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in Baltimore City, Maryland.
When Mr. Triste, Rose's father died, her mother remarried and became Mrs. Pauline LaScala. After the death of Mr. LaScala, Mrs. Pauline LaScala left El Paso, Texas and went to live with another daughter who was living at the time in Mesa, Arizona.
In the early to 1950's, Mrs. PAULINE LaSCALA visited and lived for a while with her daughter Rosa Triste Calabrese,
step-son, Joseph Calabrese, and youngest grandson, Manuel Calabrese at their home in Baltimore City Maryland.
Rose Triste Calabrese might have been the daughter or niece of FRANCISCO TRISTE and POLITA POLONIA LOSOYA.
Mrs. Pauline Triste LaScala died after 1955, possibly in Mesa Arizona or El Paso, Texas. Joseph Giuseppe Calabrese died September 14, 1981 in Baltimore, City Maryland U.S.A.

This website was created and research compiled and transcribed 1998 - 2006 by Diana "Dee" Horney - Gabler in loving memory of my great-grandparents, Guiseppe Joseph Calabrese and Enriqueta Rose Triste Calabrese.
With loving gratitude for interviews in 1998 with my granduncle, Manuel Calabrese and his wife Jeanette,
and from an interview I had on the same day with my granduncle Rosario Calabrese and his wife Maud.
Also the many stories from my aunt Pauline Calabrese and from my mother Doris Calabrese Horney.
And a wonderful chat in 2002 with John Victor Calabrese, my first cousin twice removed, son of
Pietro Peter Calabrese and nephew of my great-grandfather, Giuseppe Joseph Calabrese.
To protect their privacy, births & marriages of living persons are not added here.
