CALABRESE
Italy to America
Giuseppe "Joseph" Calabrese of the Province of Palermo, Sicily Italy far right
and the Calabrese brothers in Baltimore City, Maryland U.S.A.
CALABRESE
Generation 1
1. GIOVANNI ANTONIO CALABRESE was born before 1868
in Regno delle Due Sicilie (The Kingdom of the Two Sicilies).
Mr. Calabrese was born on the Island of Sicily or in Calabria.
Near the time that he was born, Sicily became part of the
newly formed Kingdom of Italy when Sicily and Sardinia were
united with the peninsula in 1861.
GIOVANNI CALABRESE married in Italy by 1888 to
ROSARIA ROSALIA GUERCIO. She was born by 1874
in the Kingdom of the Italy in Sicily or Calabria. Mr. and Mrs.
Giovanni Calabrese died in Italy sometime after May 11, 1903
which was when their son Pietro was born in Cefalů, Provincia
di Palermo, Sicilia, Italia (Province of Palermo Sicily, Italy.)
In the late 1800s through the early 1900s, Mr. and Mrs. Calabrese raised
a family of at least five sons in the Palermo Province (possibly in Cefalů.)
Their children grew up speaking Southern Calabrese, a Sicilian dialect.
Most Italians who emigrated between the 1880s and early 1920s were
from Southern Italy and from the island of Sicily. They left in great part
due to an agricultural depression which began in the 1880s, (the same
decade as the birth of my great-grandfather, Giuseppe Calabrese.)
At least five sons of Giovani Calabrese would emigrate from their home
in the Province of Palermo, Sicily, Italy to the United States of America.
Giuseppe, Luigi, Andrea, Rosario and Pietro Calabrese.
To my family's knowledge, the first child of Mr. Calabrese to emigrate
from Italy was my great-grandfather, Giuseppe "Joseph" Calabrese.
He left Italy between 1906 - 1909 when he was about the age of 16.
This was very close to the time when an earthquake and tsunami
struck the Strait of Messina on December 28, 1908. Four of his
brothers immigrated to the United States of America in the 1920s.
Luigi Calabrese married Carmelina Marie Liberto on January 18, 1920
in Cefalů, Province of Palermo, Sicily, Italy. They emigrated from Sicily
a month after their marriage during the month of February and arrived
at Ellis Island March 6, 1920. The first seven years of their marriage,
they lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1927 they moved to Annapolis,
Anne Arundel County, Maryland, U.S.A.
Andrea Calabrese married Angelina Liberto December 15, 1927
in the Cefalů Cathedral , in Cefalů, Province of Palermo, Sicily, Italy.
After a honeymoon in Rome, they came to America together and
settled in Annapolis, Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
(Calabrese brothers married Liberto sisters. Angelina Liberto
was the sister of Carmelina Marie Liberto who married
Luigi Calabrese, brother of Andrea Calabrese.)
Luigi and Andrea's younger brothers, Rosario and Pietro Calabrese,
immigrated to the United States of America between 1920 and 1923.
By 1930 Rosario and Pietro lived in Baltimore City, Maryland near
their older brother, Giuseppe "Joseph" Calabrese.
All of the Calabrese brothers, with the possible exception of
Andrea Calabrese, immigrated to the United States of America
before Benito Mussolini came to power in Italy, and before
the Immigration Act of 1924 was enacted to slow the amount
of immigrants, mostly from Southern and Eastern Europe,
from entering the United States of America.
The Calabrese brothers were all literate as they could read and write
in Sicilian Italian and English. They were Roman Catholic and all
became barbers in the tonsorial trade. They swore oaths of allegiance
to and became citizens of the United States of America.
More research must be done to prove the names of Mr. & Mrs. Calabrese were
Giovanni Antonio "John Anthony Nino" Calabrese and Rosaria Rosalia Guercio.
In 2002, John Victor Calabrese, my first cousin (2 generations removed), told
me that he thought that the names of his grandparents (Mr. and Mrs. Calabrese)
were Antonio "Nino" Calabrese and Rosalia Guercio. The death certificate of
my great-grandfather, "Giuseppe" Joseph S. Calabrese, recorded the name
of his father as Giovanni Calabrese (mother's name not known by informant).
The informant on his death certificate was his son, Joseph S. Calabrese Jr.
The death certificate of my great-granduncle, Andrea Calabrese, recorded
the name of his parents as John Calabrese and Rosaria Glercio. The
informant on his death certificate was his wife, Angelina Liberto Calabrese
The death certificate of my great-granduncle, Luigi Calabrese, recorded
the name of his parents as unknown Calabrese and Barbario Lyiercio.
The informant on his death certificate was his wife, Carmelina Marie Calabrese.
I sent for Social Security records of the late sons and am awaiting a response.
