Pollard SIMMONS was born on 2 May 1799 in Mason Co., Kentucky. He died on 14 Feb 1864 in Mason Co., Illinois. When Pollard left Joshua Pigman's store in Neville, Clermont County,
Ohio, in 1821, he went to Mason County, Kentucky., and married Mrs.
Harriett Ritter.. He settled on a farm on the North Fork of the
Licking River. Pollard sold out in Kentucky and moved to Sangamon
County, Illinois around 1828. The family settled near where
Pettersburg is located. New Salem was then his post office.

Pollard did a great deal of hard work breaking the sod and fencing the
farm. In 1831 the deep snow that came covered the ground 3 feet or
more. The snow drifts covered the cabin and many cattle died. After
Petersburg was layed off, Pollard built a double-geared burr mill with
small burrs or millstones that was to run with great speed. When the
mill was started, it ran with such force that the millstone burst and
pieces of stone flew clear outside the mill.
Sometime after this Pollard sold out and purchased several hundred
acres of land in Quiver now Mason County, Illinois. Soon after
comming to Quiver, Pollard was appointed a commission to lay off Mason
County, which he named after the county in Kentucky where he had
lived. He was elected justice of the Peace for the new county.

James B. Simmons, brother of Pollard wrote 'Pollard, not being stout
when young, went to school and educated so that he could teach school
or clerk in a store. Thus he spent his time until he arrived at
manhood, and never did the hard work on the farm that the other boys
did.'

James B. Simmons and John Anno, son of Joseph helped build a home in
Clermont County, Ohio in 1831. This is a link between the families of
John Anno and William Anno. Pollard Simmons was a good friend of
Abraham Lincoln. When Pollard moved to Sangamion County, Illinois he
frequently met with Stephen A. Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. Pollard
and family are listed in the 1850 Federal census for Mason County,
Kentucky.

Pollard is listed as 51 years of age born in Kentucky. He is a farmer
with real estate valued at 3000 dollars. Harriet is listed as 49 years
of age born in Kentucky. There are seven other people living in the
