"He and his family lived at Wainscott, Long Island until about 1693
when they moved to Cape May Co, NJ. Thomas was a whaler man and it was
no doubt the whaling industry that brought him to cape May. He was
probably associated with his brother Shamgar in this work."
There is some speculation that the mother of Thomas Hand's children
was Martha or Hannah Osborn. However, the preponderance of the
evidence points to Mary Talmadge. I will keep Mary Talmadge as mother
of the children but will retain Martha or Hannah Osborn as a wife of
Thomas until I have more concrete evidence.

Hand Family Lineage Cape May (handfamily.org/xxwillis.htm):
"Thomas was married twice and there is no date of either marriage so
the children have to be placed by the following circumstantial
evidence. The youngest child, Recompense, was born in 1690; and the
wife and mother apparently died as suggested by the name. It is likely
that Mary Talmadge was the mother of Recompense Hand as has been
credited by earlier researchers as she was the first wife. Mary
Talmadge was the daughter of Captain Thomas Talmadge of East Hampton.
Thomas was later married to Katherine Tubbs (NOTICE THE SPELLING!),
daughter of John Tubbs, or Katherine Meadows who apparently came with
the family to Cape May about 1693. This Hand family lived at Wainscott
(East Hampton), Long Island until about 1693 when they moved
permanently to the little settlement on the bay side of Cape May."
