The oldest of five children. She lived her childhood near the Tucannon River on their family homestead. At the age of 21 she met and married Garnet W. Graves but the marriage didn't last, being divorced some time later. Five or six years, possibly, I haven't been able to find the records. The 1930 U.S. Federal Census for Washington State, Columbia Co., Tumalum Precinct, District 27 shows she is living with her parents. No mention of a Graves in the household. How she met Alfred isn't known either but their meeting ended in a marriage that lasted the rest of their lives and the raising of our family. After the death of Alfred, Velma moved to Latah, WA and stayed there until having to come to Toledo, OR where she lived until going into the care center in Lincoln City, OR where she died of ventricular arrhythmia due to diabetes mellitus or atherosclerotic heart disease. Probably the former, she was diabetic. She was brought to her former home to buried next to Alfred in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery.
