The question arises about the first name, at least in my mind, is it Anar or Hannah or even Anna? In view of the dialect of early New England speech, Hannah can be and probably was, pronounced Anar. Anna being the short version of Hannah, it is a very small move to Anar. If the records of her birth can be found it may proven one way or another. Parents: Truman GIBBS and Anna BARNES. Married Joyce Osborne, widow of James Osborne. Gregory died 3-15-1707, probably Hartford. His father's will stated that Gregory should be apprenticed to some Godly man, for a period of five years. Cullen Toponce Parents: Gyles GIBBS and Helen CAREY. Parents: Gyles GIBBS and Katherine CARWITHE. Spouse: Joyce OSBORNE. Gregory GIBBS and Joyce OSBORNE were married about 1654 in Connecticut, USA. Gyles GIBBS was born in 1595 in St. Sidwell, Exeter, Devon, England. He emigrated about 1631 from Mundon, Herts, England. He died on 21 May 1641 in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut, USA. He was buried on 21 May 1641 in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut, USA. He was christened in St. Sidwell, Exeter, Devon, England. Giles had children baptized at St. Sidwell's, Exeter, Devonshire, England in 1630 & 1631. He was made a freeman in 1632 in Dorchester, Massachusetts in 1632. This information is according NEHG Register, Volume 147 Page 158. The "Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England" by James Savage states that Giles Gibbs was at Dorchester, Massachusetts Colony, in 1630. He was certainly there by 4 March 1632 when he was made a "freeman" at Boston. It has been commonly assumed that he was one of the party led by the Rev. John White, which sailed aboard the "Mary and John" from Plymouth, Co. Devon, on 20 March 1630 and arrived in Nantasket Bay on 30 May. Other records indicate that Giles and his family may have sailed aboard the LYON which left London about 23 Aug 1631 and arrived at Nantasket on 2 Nov 1631, bringing "in all about sixty persons". He was made a Freeman, a Stockholder in the Massachusetts Bay Company on 4 March 1634/5 and was a grantee of l and same year. Early records show he was an Assessor and also one of the "Selectmen". Giles m. (1)____, (name unknown), July 29, 1617, Alford , Somerset. (Reference: Dwellys Transcripts of the Bishops Transcripts). Alford is a small village between Somerton & Bruton and there are no parish records there, earlier than the 1700 's. He was in Crewkerne, Somerset, at least from 1618, where he came in contact with Rev. John Warham. Rev. John Warham, bpt. October 9, 1595, Crewkerne, s. of Richard Waring, graduated from Oxford in 1618 and was ordained, May 23, 1619, at Silverton, Devon. On June 17, 1619 he was granted a license to marry Cecilia Hatch of Cullompton, Devon. At the time he was living in Withe ridge, Devon. After his father died in 1623 he returned to Crewkerne. He became the Rector there and began preaching Puritanism. His sister, Magdalem Warham, married a George Gibbs and they had six children baptized in Crewkerne between 1620 and 1633. George may have bee n a brother of Giles Gibbs. In 1627, Bishop William Laud removed Warham from his pulpit in Crewkerne because of his Puritan views. During his stay there he had a great effect on a number of families there and he influenced them to emigrate to New England. These included the families of Humphrey Pinney of Broadway and William Phelps, George Hull & Giles Gibbs of Crewkerne. After leaving Crewkerne in 1627, Rev. Warham obtained a living at St. Sidwell's in Exeter, Devon. Evidently Giles Gibbs followed him to Exeter. His first wife must have died between 1623 & 1629, because h e m. (2) Katherine Carwithe, April 13, 1629 at St. Sidwell's. Their first child was bpt. March 28, 1629/30. It has long been claimed that Giles Gibbs came on the ship, "Mary & John" with Rev. Warham. This ship sailed from Plymouth on March 20, 1630, eight days before the above baptism. Also a second child was baptized, June 5, 1631. This indicates Giles remained i n Exeter until June 1631 and soon after left for New England, because he became a freeman there on March 4, 1632/3. Another version, also in Volume 5, "Search for the Passengers of the Mary & John 1630": GILES GIBBS- Born England, probably Somerset. He died, May 21, 1641, Windsor, Conn. He married (1)______, probably on July 29, 1617, in Alford, Somerset, to an unnamed woman. (Reference: Dwellys Transcripts of the Bishops Transcript, Taunton, Somerset). He married (2) Katherine Carwithe, April 13, 1629, St. Sidwell's Church, Exeter, Devon. Giles Gibbs may have come from South Perrot, Somerset, and possibly descended from William Gibbs & Mary Newcourt of South Perrot, near Crewkerne. Little has been printed on Giles Gibbs until the publication of an article by James A Rasmussen, C. G., in the Jan.-Apr. 1985 issue of the American Genealogist, p. 32. Previously, it was believed he came on the "Mary & John" in 1630, with his first wife (name unknown), and a son, Gregory. Records at St. Sidwell's Church in Exeter, Devon, show he married, Katherine Carwithe there, April 13, 1629. They had children bpt. there on March 28, 1629 (Jacob) and June 5, 1631 (Sarah). This would indicate he did not board the "Mary & John" on March 20, 1630 to sail to New England. He probably came a year or two later. Records in Crewkerne, Somerset show that a Giles Gibbs had children, baptized there in 1618 ( Mary, 1620 (Margaret) & 1623 (Gregory). Since Giles brought with him a young son, Gregory, t his appears to be the emigrant. Also, Giles' second wife was named Katherine. This means he was in Crewkerne until at least 1623 and probably until 1627. In 1627, Rev. John Warham, one of the "Mary & John ministers was removed from the pulpit in Crewkerne by Bishop William Laud, for his Puritan views, and he went to St. Sidwell's Church in Exeter, Devon. Other Crewkerne families were influenced by Rev. Warham, including William Gaylord, George Hull, Humphrey Pinney & William Phelps, who came with Warham in 1630. It appears that Giles Gibbs followed Warham to St. Sidwell's but did not accompany him in 1630. Giles Gibbs first settled in Dorchester, MA, where he was granted land and ordered to build a fence for his cow in 1633. This fence marked to line of an abbatis, erected during the siege of Boston in 1776, which later became the boundary of Boston Street. In 1634 he was one of the ten Selectmen chosen. He was once cited for "being defective in coming to the meetinghouse". In 1635 he was granted two acres next to Thomas Stoughton. Soon after he moved to Windsor, CT,. where he joined the First Church there. All of his children were minors when he died in 1641. Taken from "Search for the Passengers of the Mary & John", Volume 20, published by Burton W . Spear, Toledo, Ohio 1993: "He came from St. Sidwell's parish, Exeter, Devon, where Rev. John Warham last preached in England. He had a daughter baptized there June 5, 1631 and his first appearance in Dorchester was in 1633. He may have come with two other Exeter men in 1633, Nathaniel Duncan and William Hill. He was probably in Crewkerne until at least 1623 and probably until 1627. In 1627, Rev. John Warham, one of the "Mary & John" ministers was removed from the pulpit in Crewkerne by Bishop William Laud for his Puritan views, and he went to St. Sidwell's Church in Exeter, Devon . From Toponce Family Files by H. Cullen Toponce Giles Gibbs, our earliest known ancestor, was a descendent of the ancient Gibbs family which came to England in the 11th century with William the Conqueror, from Normandy 900 years ago. They had come with Duke William to help him gain the English throne after the death of the King, Edward the Confessor, who had named Duke William as his heir to the throne and which Harold of Wessex had usurped. Duke William and his force of 1000 (?) troops met King Harold with his 6000 men in the heavily fought Battle of Hastings Oct. 14, 1066. Harold lost his life and William conquered all England. To pay off his army, William the Conquerer gave them English lands. The various branches of the Gibbs family spread out and settled in the counties of Devonshire, Kent, Warwickshire, and Somerset. 563 years later Guiles Gibbs came to America from Devonshire, England on the ship "Abigail" with year old Gregory and his second wife Katherine______, in 1629. In 1631 he settled in the Massachusetts Bay Colony at Dorchester. There he was a freeman (one possessed of certain franchises or municipal privileges). He was selected Selectman on March 4, 1633. (A Selectman was one of a board of town officials concerned with its management, the enforcement of local laws, care of the poor, etc. They are still elected annually in New England.) He was a Grantee of Dorchester Lands in 1633. He moved to Windsor, Connecticut in 1634, where he died May 21, 1641. His will was dated May 18th, three days before his death. He named his children, all minors as Gregory, Jacob, Samuel, Benjamin and Sarah. His wife Katherine died October 24, 1660. Footnote: It was thought Giles Gibbs had several brothers: Mathew, Thomas, Samuel, Frank and Joseph. The two latter were early settlers. Francis Gibbs was a boy on the 'Sea Flower' and was in Windsor in 1670. Edward Gibbs, also John Gibbs, came from England in the "True Love" in 1653. ====================================================================== == Data of Giles Gibbs obtained from records in the New York Historical and Genealogical Library and the New York Public Library.
