"John Clark was born in New York State. Served in the war of the Revolution, and as Quartermaster had charge of the outfitting of soldiers. On one occasion, reporting to his wife Abigail Huchison (**Hutchinson) Clark that he lacked one pair of stockings for the company of men who were to leave the next day, she took from her store of yarn and in the twenty four hours, by continuous knitting finished the pair of long stockings in time to outfit the needy soldier. Many were the stories of hardship and privation related by Grandma Clark. At one time they were so nearly reduced to starvation they were compelled to eat slugs. John Clark and Abigail Hutchinson had the following children: James, John, Malinda and Rachel who were all born in New York State." ===================== From Ancestry.com, Biography & Genealogy Master Index: Full Name: John Clark Birth: 1758Death: 1833 Cross Reference Information217105 Name: N/ABirth: N/ADeath: N/A Source Information3 Citation 1: Appleton's Cyclopedia of American Biography. John Jay Clark The grandfather of our subject, John Jay Clark, was born in New York about 1750. He served in the Revolutionary War and died in New York about 1830. His son, also named John Clark, became a pioneer minister and always on the frontier, going from New York to Ohio and later to Illinois. In 1801 he married Anna Gibbs, the daughter of Trueman Gibbs, who also served in the Revolutionary War. Their son, John Jay Clark, was born in the village of Redding, Hamilton County, Ohio, on June 18, 1815, When John was four years of age, his family moved to eastern Illinois and settled on the Wabash. Here he spent most of his childhood. In 1837 and 1838 he studied at Shurtlif College at Alton, Illinois and on March 22, 1838, married Mary Sweet Rice and they began their married life at New Boston. The Clarks moved to Sugar Grove, in Mercer County, Illinois in 1848. Mary passed away and he took Elizabeth VanAtta for his second wife on 12-9-1852. She was born in Henderson County, Illinois on 12-15-1834, the daughter of Gearshum VanAtta and Sarah Palmer. In the summer of 1854, the Clarks headed for the Oregon country, crossing the plains by ox team. Elizabeth's parents and their younger children were also in the party. John's seventy-four year old mother, Anna, also made the trip. John's brother Alvin and sister Rosetta (Clark) Long and their families had came to Oregon in 1852, suffering many hardships on the way. In Sept. of 1854, Alvin Clark and Ransome Long met John Jay and his wagon train on the Oregon Trail near Arlington and led them along the Barlowe Road to Oregon City. They first settled on a small farm, about four miles from Halsey, in Linn County, Oregon. John organized a Baptist church there, which later became the Halsey Baptist Church. On May 30, 1863, they sold out and moved to north Clark County, Washington, where they lived at Brush Prairie. He had taught school in both Linn County and at Brush Prairie. The land at Brush Prairie was heavily timbered and they built their home from logs cut from the forest. The cabin consisted of three rooms, with two fireplaces, one on each end of the building. There was a stove with a small chimney for cooking. More trees were logged off to make room for vegetable and flower gardens. Gearshum VanAtta bought a place from Mr. Larkin containing some cleared land and a very fine well with a windlass. He donated a parcel of this property for the first cemetery at Brush Prairie. When John located at Brush Prairie there was but one other family there, that of Merritt Bowman, and other than his brother, Alvin Clark. There was only one Baptist minister, Rev. Weston of Puget Sound. In August of 1863, John and his brother Alvin, organized the Salmon Creek Baptist Church, located in what is now known as the Brush Prairie area, which was used as a school in earlier years. For more than twenty-five years, John served as the pastor of the Brush Prairie church and would often walk ten to fifteen miles to preach in various part of the county. The Brush Prairie Baptist Church is the oldest Baptist Church in Washington State, which has had a continuous existence since its organization. In 1869, John was elected to the Territorial Legislature, where he served one term, Although living on the frontier, he was greatly interested in world events and had a deep interest in the quest for knowledge and a love of books. In March of 1876, the Vancouver Independent reported the "uncle Johnny" Clark of Brush Prairie, was critically ill with typhoid fever. Elizabeth passed away on Oct. 26, 1891 and is buried in the Brush Prairie cemetery. In 1900, illness forced Johns' retirement from the church and John went to live with his daughter, Irene Davis, Portland, Oregon. He passed away at her home in 1902." John J. Clark learned to preach in the Baptist Church at or near Sugar Grove (Illinois) and often did preach. The church was organized in 1849 and a Minister by the name of Eberhart was called to serve at the church.
