Rose BROWN was born on 15 Aug 1882 in Mangrove, Lilley, Hertfordshire, England.429 She was christened on 30 Sep 1882 in Lilley, Hertfordshire, England. She appeared in the census in 1891 in Offley, Hitchin, Hertfordshire, England. About 1960 she was in Lilley, Hertfordshire, England.430 From an email from Anthony Brown: "In the 1960's Britain sold what was called Premium Bonds and being a postmaster, Rose refused to sell them because her Methodist principles forbade gambling. It was said that she was the only sub postmaster in Britain to do this! The legend goes on to say that Lord Hill of Luton himself, then Postmaster General, made a personal visit to try to persuade her to change her mind. He was unsuccessful. Premium Bonds are a government sponsored draw and differ from a lottery in that your original investment can always be reclaimed, like a no interest charity bond. The prize fund is made up from the interest which the government makes on the total stakes. Rose was working in her shop when she met her husband, Arthur Goodge, around 1901. When she became sub postmistress is not known for certain but her grandson Anthony, has two original signed Post Office forms for Bertha Goodge and Aubrey Goodge from when they started as assistants to her on 11 August 1926. As the forms are dated later than this, on 14 March 1932 (countersigned by Rose), she probably took up her duty in 1926. Working for the GPO in Luton from 1967-1992, Anthony had access to historical records, but could never find the original Cockernhoe appointment file, which may mean it was so old it had been archived. Rose would have remained postmaster until perhaps the mid 1960s, when her daughter Eva Goodge took over. On Eva's death at the age of 65(?), the sub postmastership was taken on by Rose's son Aubrey Goodge, who was a Sunday School teacher and lay preacher. He remained postmaster until a disagreement over opening hours with the local Head Postmaster caused the final closure of the office in about 1979ish. As Anthony's stint as a trainer and auditor of sub post offices did not commence until 1980, he never had the pleasure of auditing them!" By Anthony.
