In Conneaut Twp Erie Co., PA, where all their children were born, they also would embrace a new religion that would change their lives. One of the strangers stopping at their home, was a Orson Hyde, an apostle of the new Mormon religion formed in 1830 by Joseph Smith. Anna , a deeply spiritual woman was the first to accept the message of the apostle and was baptized in the Mormon religion on 29 May 1833. It would be five yrs before the rest of the family was baptized, but even before his baptism, Jesse moved his family westward to join the Saints as they were called.. They first resided in Kirkland, Ohio the headquarters of the church since 1831. By 1838, disputes with former members, collapse of the Mormon Bank during a nation wide recession, as well as conflict with non Mormon neighbors broke up the Kirkland community. Joseph Smith and his followers attempted to settle in Northern Missouri but were soon driven from there by suspicious neighbors. The Mormons, including Jesse and Anna then fled to IL where they founded the city of Nauvoo. Jesse built a home for his family in Nauvoo, and it is while living here that Anna in 1841, performed proxy baptisms in the Mormon temple records. This established early records of the names of her ancestors, including the names of her ancestors, including the names of her grand parents, Robert and Sarah Braford, and Sarah's parents, Ebenezer and Marcy Mudge. Jesse and his son Appleton both became members of the Nauvoo Legion where Jesse and Appleton had many experiences trying to maintain peace and subdue violence. They were responsible for protecting the life of Joseph Smith. The city of Nauvoo grew to 20,000 becoming the largest city in IL. The rapid growth of the city and the important part that the Mormons soon played in state politics made non Mormons suspicious and hostile again. One faction set up a rival news paper to fight Smith who had become a candidate for President of the United States. Jesse was in command of the police while they were destroying the rival " Nauvoo Expositor" and was later among those arrested and jailed. Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum were attacked in a jail in Carthage, IL by a mob and killed. Jesse's court trial was held on 22 Oct 1845, when he and John Lytle were charged with destroying the Expositor Press. However, the principal witness could not testify whether it was Jesse or his son Appleton whom he saw nor could he testify whether it was John Lyle (on trial) or Andrew Lytle. On being informed that they were both policemen he answered that it was the Blacksmith Lytle; and on being told that they were both blacksmiths, he declared once again that he could not identify which one had participated in the destruction of the press. Jesse and Lytle were then acquitted of all charges. Jesse and Anna and their family left Nauvoo with the other Mormons,on the long trek that would end in Salt Lake City. Leaving Nauvoo in June of 1846 they arrived in Winter Quarters, NE in Nov.. In Jan, 1847, due to exposure, Anna fell ill, and weakened from extreme fatigue from the difficult journey, and unable to bear the onslaught of disease in her weakened condition, she died on 16 Jan 1847. All of the family was sick and Ansil was the only one able to see his mother buried. Ten days later Sophronia also died. Jesse continued on to finally settle in Salt Lake City, UT.
