“GEORGE TURNBULL[3]
George Turnbull, another member of the rapidly thinning ranks of Clark county’s G. A. R. corps, passed away yesterday afternoon at the age of 83 years in the Veterans’ hospital, Portland. Born in Kentucky, Turnbull went to Missouri with his parents at the age of six years. When he was 15 years of age, the Civil War broke out and the lad joined up with Company T, Twenty-fifth Infantry, at St. Catherine, Mo. He served four years and four months, or during the entire duration of the war.
Following the close of the Civil War, young Turnbull returned to Missouri where he married Miss Mary E. Harris. Fourteen children, nine of whom are still living, were born to the couple. The family came west by way of San Francisco 61 years ago, and Mr. Turnbull took up a homestead in the Brush Prairie country. He worked in the woods to support his family in those early lean years, his children relate, making week-end trips ton foot to Camas for provisions and carrying everything to his home on his back. Eighteen years ago, he retired from active work and has since then made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Rosie Farley, of Brush Prairie. He had been a member of the Christian church at Brush Prairie for many years and he was also a member of Mt. Hood Masonic lodge." He was buried in Wilson Bridge Cemetery, Vancouver, WA.2535
