He was buried in Pataha Flat Cementary, Garfield, Washington. (Part of a letter written by Albert Long--son of Ransom and Rosetta
Long to his son Tallbert and his wife Dorothy, on Feb. 18, 1923, from
821 East Lincoln Street, Walla Walla, Wash.)

Dear Talbert and Dorothy:

It is regrettable that we do not know more of our father and mother's
history. I am not even sure of our father's Father's given name, but
believe it was William. Neither am I sure of mother's mother's name,
though I can remember seeing her when I was two or three years old.
Mother's father (-- Clark) died in Illinois before Grandfather Clark
crossed the plains to Oregon in 1854.

Mother had four brothers, all Baptist Ministers. Alvin and John Clark
crossed the plains to Oregon in 1854.

Mother's brothers, both John and Alvin sold their farms in Linn County (Oregon) and bought cattle, about 250, up near here in 1861. The awful winter of January, February and March that followed killed all but two, if I remember rightly , of their cattle. Then they moved abut 12 miles out, in the timber, from Vancouver, Washington) this State and spent their lives there.

Their post office, Brush Prairie. (WA)

Father and Mother sold their donation claim farm in Linn County,
Oregon, early in 1859 and bought John McKnutts's donation farm about 5 miles east of Springfield, Lane County, Oregon, which is about 25 miles south of where myself (Albert Long) and my sister Effie were born, near Harrisburg.

The donation Homesteads of Oregon were not limited to survey of
section lines. One could take a Homestead one rod wide and a hundred miles long if he wanted to. Father's place, bought of McKnutt, when surveyed was found to hold a strip about 2 and 1/2 rods wide out of a section, for nearly 3/4 of a mile and a corner of another about 2 1/2 rods wide by 8 1/2 rods long. The location was defined by starting from a Balm Tree on the bank of a slough and marked with certain blazes and notches, then running so far south to the foot of a hill so many rods, then west so many rods, then north to a corner west of the Balm Tree, place of starting. This may give you some intimation of how much writing such a description would take the portions in 5 or 6 sections.

A neighbor of ours took his land in a half section, in a long strip. I
would now guess, about 60 rods wide and 1 1/4 miles long, East and
West, just the best land and then a long strip of an ell north nearly
a mile, abut thirty rods wide into good timber. It sure was a good
choice of both land and timber. Though he could neither read or write, Mr Herod Johnson was a good business person.

Father (Ransom Lomg) was born in Kannawha County VA, (now West Virginia) Dec. 24, 1812. His parents and Father's grandfather moved to Ohio in 1822 or 1823, Then Father's Mother, who was Mary Wheaton of Pennsylvania, died, and they all moved to Wayne County, Indiana. There Father's Father died when father was 15 years of age and father lived with an uncle, Elisha Long who built a section of the National Highway, which I believe extends from somewhere on the Atlantic Coast to Illinois line, but I am not sure of this. I drove on it while there. It is still good and built to last for ages. In about 1837 Father and his Grandfather moved to Illinois. When "Black Hawk" made war and curriers came to their village, Illinois City, and told of the Indian massacres, a meeting was called. A man with a pole made a line in the dirt of the street, and called for a company of Volunteers to fight the Indians. Father's grandfather, who had served our nation 8 years in establishing the Government and 4 years in the War of 1812, then eighty-odd years of age, with hair white as cotton, was the first man to the line for Volunteers. Father said that when the oldest man in all the neighborhood toed the line, it did not take any argument to get 100 volunteers. He gave Father the rifle that he carried through the Revolution and War of 1812. Wish we had it now. Father's great grandfather came from Ireland, with 12 sons, in 1736. Mother ( Clark) was born April 18, 1818, Hamilton County, near Cincinnati, Ohio, abut 12 miles out. A long school house was built when she was 12 years old and she attended school three weeks when her father sold out and moved to the frontier of Illinois, never had another day of school and though she married Father (Long) at 15 and lived on the frontier all her life, gave birth to eleven children, never had the convenience of a safety pin, or a sewing machine, she was the best informed lady in current events and modern history, I have ever known. Was a good public speaker and the best in spelling and grammar. Last year a man said she was the best reader he had ever heard.

I don't know the date of Father and Mother's marriage but believe it
was in August 1833.

Our sister Matilda was born Sept. 23, 1835 and died at 4 years of age.

Cyrus J. was born Jan. 23, 1838. He died about 1910.

Cynthia (Tom Foster's mother) was born Jan. 27, 1840, and died last
October.

John Clark, born April 10, 1842. Died of cholera on the plains at Lone Pine, Wind River Canyon, Wyoming. Mother said that in 20 minutes after her boy was laid away, their train started on and she could never see the place, much less his grave, again.

Mary Amanda, you remember Aunt and Uncle James Tuttle, at Spokane. They both died at Pamona, California.

Joel Milton, born Oct. 6, 1847, and died four years ago at North
Yakima. He was stricken with paralysis as he entered our cousin's home there. Sometime you may find them.

Francis Helen, born Feb. 11, 1850. Died at 2 years of age.

I (Charles Albert Long) was born June 11, 1855, Linn County, Oregon.

Effie Melvina, born December 8, if I have it right, 1858, Linn County,
Oregon and died in our old house on Pataha Prairie, the third death in the neighborhood, June 16, 1878, and was buried the 18th. (Our Effie was Born Jan. 18, 1889.

James Otto and William Oscar, born Aug. 15, 1864, Lane County, Oregon (Twins).
Otto lives at Pomeroy, Oscar here.

We three are the last of Father and Mother's children. Eight of us live to be grown. Matilda passed to the great forever at 4 years.
Helen at two. Cyrus at about 74 Clark at 10. Amanda abut 74. Effie at 19. Joel at 71. Cynthia at 82.

I am now 67. Oscar and Otto 58. Wish I could tell you more but for
some cause, I neglected taking down anything whatsoever from Father and Mother's history. Mother's people were of the Clarks who became known the world over in the manufacture of Telescopes.

(The letter continues with some personal history and descriptions of
Albert's wife and her people the Plummers, and Albert's children. This is a bit foreign to the Ransom Long and Clark histories.

This matter has been copied from manuscript matter in the possession of Mrs. Ora Gordon, who is the daughter of Melvina (Effie) and Albert Davis. Ora now lives near Azusa, California. Helen Watts, my daughter, and I visited her on August 11, 1950, when Ora loaned us this matter for copying).

Daniel LONG I was born on 11 Apr 1756 in , Culpeper, Virginia, USA.1866 He died on 11 May 1838 in Meridianville, Madison Co., Alabama. He was buried in Meridianville, Madison, Al.1867 BIOGRAPHY: "Daniel Long (No. 4.) the third in order of the Second Generation was born April 11, 1756, in Culpepper County, Virginia.

BIOGRAPHY: This youth developed into a model of physical manhood. In stature, muscular strength and powers of endurance, he was gigantic. As an athlete, he had few equals and withal a weakness for a displaying of it on the least provocation. Said his biographer, "Though not a quarrelsome man, he would rather fight than eat". Undoubtedly a peculiarity of the athletes of that day.

BIOGRAPHY: By occupation he was a farmer. During the Revolutionary War he served a private, mostly in the ranks of the Virginia Light Horse Cavalry of the Continental Line. His first term of enlistment was for three years and he afterwards re-enlisted and served to the end of the are. His last experience was in the campaign, which ended with the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown.

BIOGRAPHY: Though he experienced a great deal of active service, the names of only two of the battles in which he participated are known; he fought at Guilford Court House in Greene's Southern campaign, and at the Siege of Yorktown.

BIOGRAPHY: His biographer took especial pleasure in relating that he was "a terror to the Red Coats". In one battle he had seven bullet holes shot through his "horse-cloak", though he had the good fortune to escape unharmed. This Providential escape with the mere perforation of the garment without injury to his person, he attributed to the peculiar construction of the garment itself. If was so made that when the wearer rode at great speed, the wind would swell it to immense proportions; thus making him appear larger than he really was. The theory was that the enemy would be deceived as to the real size of the mark, at which he was aiming, and would not be as precise in taking aim. A warrant for 100 acres of land was issued to Daniel Long of Culpepper County, Virginia, on June 5, 1784.

BIOGRAPHY: Soon after the close of the war, Daniel moved to Georgia, and later to Madison County Alabama, which ends the history of this Hercules, as far as our branch of the family knows."
