The short description of the line is as follows:

Adam Ross (I) living in Skirling, Peeblesshire, Scotland. He was probably born around 1650-60. His wife may have been Rachell THORBRANE of nearby West Linton (she married an Adam ROSS 18th October 1674).

Adam Ross (II) was born 18th December 1781 and baptised 20 January 1782 in Skirling. He married Jean HUTCHISON. His profession on the marriage banns was recorded as plewman.

Lt-Colonel Alexander Aitken ROSS born Edinburgh 11th August 1823. He married 22nd Feb 1859 Jane Fleming RUSSELL. He joined the Highland Light Infantry under age at 15 and retired as a Lt-Colonel.

Robert Russell (“Russell”) ROSS born Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada 26th July 1863; a doctor. Medical Directory records him 1890 Casa Grande, Rio Tinto and 1895 Las Minas, Rio Tinto Chief Medical Officer Las Minas 1908 until 1926 in Spain. He married 8th Jan 1891 Agnes Helen BROLOCHAN.

Colonel Andrew Russell ROSS, born Edinburgh 13th Jan 1892. Royal Army Medical Corps; WWI Gallipoli; WWII Dunkirk, Mentioned in despatches in Africa. He married Catherine ‘Kitty’ Olga Dorothy HARMAN Dublin 15th Sept 1916. He divorced and married 2ndly Primrose ?? Arms granted in his memory Lyon Register 1991.

Thomas (“Tommy”) Russell Clayton ROSS born Dublin 15th Mar 1920. Married Honora Emma Anna Sophie Emilia Maria Mac Swiney. She was the daughter of Valentine Emmanuel (Patrick) Mac Swiney of Mashanaglass, (Arms Ulster Office 1895) created Marquis Mac Swiney by H.H. Pope Leo XIII, Knight of Malta, Member of the Royal Irish Academy. Author of histories and Anna Karoline von Görtz Countess von Schlitz. Thomas ROSS, after his mother’s death, changed his name to ROSS-HARMAN.

Participant 26579 ROSS born Dublin 17th May 1948. Married Living KATZECK, Lörrach, Germany 10th July 1982, daughter of Heinz Katzeck, pharmacist and Sigrid LINDENMANN. Emigrated to Germany 1981. On becoming the feudal Baron of Biggar, he changed his name to ROSS OF BIGGAR, Baron of Biggar.

The principal researchers who put all this information together were Robert Fleming ROSS (R.I.P.), his son Peter David ROSS (living in South Africa) and Charles Russell Clayton ROSS (living in Germany). They were helped with information by many other family members

Everything in standard typescript comes from researched records mainly births/marriages/deaths (so-called “vital records”) which became statutory in Scotland 1 Jan 1855 and from the Old Parish Registers (OPR) and the Kirk Session records before that. Census records (decennial from 1841) give various information – very limited in 1841, fuller in later years; adult ages are approximate to within 5 years i.e. 40 means 40-44, but exact in later Census records. Census records sometimes give a different birthplace from that where the birth/baptism was registered, possibly the informants did not know exactly in which parish they were born, possibly the head of the household assumed, for example, that his brother or sister for whom he or she was giving the information was born in the same parish as him/herself, possibly the enumerator made an error etc. Ages are sometimes at variance between the different records. WO means War Office. Some details from the IGI still have to be checked against the original sources.

Peter Ross & Charles Ross who first met in Skirling, Scotland in June 2004 are still very much working on this family record. The long term aim is to produce the tree with photographs at least in book form but possibly on a family website.

HISTORY OF THE ROSS FAMILY

The descendants of Adam Ross (I) at Skirling, Peeblesshire, Scotland born ca.1650-1660

According to one account in the family, our family came south to the Lowlands from the Black Isle. The first recorded ancestor is

Adam Ross (I) living in Skirling, Peeblesshire, Scotland. His wife is unknown as the birth records of his children only give his name. He was probably born around 1650-60.

His wife may have been Rachell THORBRANE of nearby West Linton (she married an Adam ROSS 18th October 1674 – maybe there were earlier children unrecorded in registers, it would be unusual for the first child to be born 9 years after the marriage but there could have been others who died)

Adam ROSS born 2nd February and baptised 11th February 1706 in Skirling Peeblesshire, Scotland

Robert ROSS (I) mentioned above was baptised 23rd April 1691 in Skirling, Peeblesshire, Scotland. He married Janet Wilson. She died May 1735 in Skirling. Recorded at the Skirling Session Meeting one pound received for the funeral of Janet Wilson. Robert may have married again in Skirling Jannet PURDIE on 2nd August 1736.

3.James ROSS (dates?) whose illegitimate daughter (name unknown) was born to Elizabeth WYPAR April 1736. Kirk Session records of penance.

Robert ROSS (II) mentioned above was born in Skirling, Peeblesshire, Scotland. He was tenant of Great Laws farm. He died 2nd March 1810 aged 90 according to the gravestone in Skirling Kirkyard; with his wife Helen HENDERSON, he is commemorated on the tombstone (Victorian) in the churchyard at Skirling. His baptism was recorded in Skirling in 1722, so probably he wasn’t quite that age, but those who erected the stone thought he was – unless his baptism was unusually delayed for about 2 years and his birth really was in 1720! His wife Helen who is most probably the daughter of John HENDERSON and Isobel BRAIDWOOD, and who was baptised in the neighbouring parish of Covington & Thankerton in 1743 would have been at her death on 10th May 1818 (recorded on the stone) 75 rather than the 72 years inscribed on the stone. Robert married Helen most probably as his third wife, when he was 48 and she was 27. He had been widowed twice; there seem to be no children recorded to his first wife, Margret WILSON who died 1757 but, however, two to his second wife Christian PORTEOUS.

1. Janet ROSS born 2nd October 1766. Her death 1st September 1822, aged 55 she is recorded on the tombstone in Skirling as “his” daughter

3. ??James ROSS born 17th January 1768 (this is to be checked for confusion with 2. It seems there are two called James, so the 1768 one was probably named for the deceased elder 1764 one)

8. William ROSS born 4th March and baptised 4th April 1784 in Skirling. He was a farmer at nearby Thankerton and died 2nd June 1852 in Skirling (tombstone). He married Marion RAMSAY 9th June 1809 in Skirling. She was born 1788 and died 20th August 1836

5. Helen ROSS born 1823 Skirling. She married John FORSTER 10th May 1855; died 18th December 1891 Carlisle.

6. Adam ROSS born 1826 Skirling. He died 12th March 1846 Skirling.

Adam Ross (II) was born 18th December 1781 and baptised 20 January 1782 in Skirling. He married Jean HUTCHISON daughter of James HUTCHISON, mariner, deceased; they gave their names for marriage at the Canongate Church 7th Feb 1805 (OPR). His profession on the marriage banns was recorded as plewman. She died in 1823.

Jean’s name varies from record to record, sometimes she is Jane sometimes Hutcheson or Hutchinson (and once where the clerk was obviously a bit dozy or maybe deaf or possibly had had a dram too many, she appears as Richardson! Adam’s profession as given on his children’s birth, marriage and death records varies considerably; he is also described as hynd/hind (a married farm servant e.g. a skilled ploughman with his own cottage who worked on the land with his wife & family), farmer, tea merchant, refreshment rooms keeper, Clerk in Duty Office. Adam is also somewhere(? Oral tradition?documentation) recorded as a silversmith. I have not found James Hutchi(n)son/Hutcheson.

According to my father, Thomas R.C. ROSS, the family oral history said that Alexander Aitken ROSS was the youngest of 12 children (but research by other family members added to mine show only nine in all, of whom eight were sons, perhaps there were more girls who died as infants).

The descendants of each child, where known, are:

I Robert ROSS born 31st March 1807, baptised 11th April 1807 (Inveresk O P R), Edinburgh; died Edinburgh 21st Nov 1878, single, a printer.

As he is the eldest son, and the naming of his siblings falls into the traditional naming pattern, we expect his paternal grandfather to be a Robert. His birth is more than two years after his parents gave their names for marriage so perhaps they didn’t marry right away or he had an elder sibling who died.

II Isabel(la)/Isobel ROSS born 22nd Dec 1808, baptised 9th Jan 1809 (Inveresk O P R) Edinburgh, married 3 June 1840 St Cuthbert’s Edinburgh. She died Edinburgh 25th April 1885 aged 75. In 1861 Edinburgh Census she is a grocer. She married, as his second wife, a currier Robert RUSSELL; at their marriage he was living at 21 Lauriston Street and she was at 28 Lauriston Street. On the marriage record her father Adam ROSS is not described as deceased. A boy of 4 Robert RUSSELL is recorded with them in the 1841 Edinburgh Census at 18 Lauriston Street; he appears on his father’s death record in 1855 as an apprentice currier aged 19, whose two elder brothers William & John (at 5) and his younger sister Elizabeth(at 3) had died. Her mother died in 1823 possibly in childbirth or as a result. She took care of her brothers.

The family were still at 18 Lauriston Street in 1855 when Robert RUSSELL died 9th Feb 1855, aged 58. Another child also named Elisabeth died at the age of three. It must have been terrible for Robert Russell to lose four children. In the 1881 Edinburgh Census Isabella is still at 8 Lothian Road but with a couple boarding and a female servant. Isabel(la), as eldest daughter, would normally be named after her maternal grandmother; there are two James Hutchesons married to Issobel/Isabels around this time but unless one could find out their professions, we have no starting point and anyway our Isabel(la) could have been an exception etc etc;

Issue:

i. Elizabeth RUSSELL died aged 3

ii. Jane Helen RUSSELL born 4 June 1842 Edinburgh; in the 1851 Edinburgh Census she is Jean, 8 years old, in 1871 she is Jane aged 27. She was known as “Janellen” and later looked after the children of her uncle Lt-Col Alexander Aitken Ross when he was in India.

iii. William Thomas RUSSELL born 4 January 1847 Edinburgh, an architectural surveyor aged 24 in 1871. He was the informant at his mother’s death in 1885.

(These two surviving children were living together with their mother and Isabella’s unmarried elder brother Robert at 8 Lothian Road in the 1871 Edinburgh Census)

III James Auchinleck ROSS born 31st Dec 1810 baptised 27th Jan 1811 (Inveresk O P R) Edinburgh.

I have not found James in any other records; according to the naming pattern, James as second son is ‘correctly’ named after his maternal grandfather. Once again there is a gap of two years since Isabella’s birth so theoretically there could have been a sibling between them who died.

IV(??) Adam ROSS brushmaker; married Magdalene STEWART, (she was the daughter of Robert Stewart and Magdalene Scrymgeour born Edinburgh 29th February 1824). She died Edinburgh 17th Dec 1898 aged 74, described as married to Adam i.e. not a widow. Apart from his marriage on 15th April 1850 at St Stephen’s Birmingham Warwick, I have not found Adam in any other records. As his son became an Anglican clergyman first in London then later in Boscombe (see Crockfords Clerical Directory), he may have moved permanently to England where his grandchildren were born. According to the naming pattern, Adam could be the third son ‘correctly’ named after his father. According to the pattern he would normally name his own eldest son after his father Adam(II) - but that would have meant also calling him after himself, so he called his son Robert, either after his grandfather Robert (father of the plewman Adam) or after his father-in-law, Robert Stewart. There is information now that Adam was born on 26th February 1819 (from somewhere in Peter’s records), which would mean that he is here out of sequence and should be the 7th child in fact. We are looking into this at the moment.

Issue:

i) Reverend Dr. Robert ROSS born ca. 1848 aged 22 on marriage died ca. 1930 (possibly in Boscombe Bournemouth where he had a parish). He married Margaret ‘Maggie’ Cockburn GORDON (daughter of William Gordon and Margaret Aitchison) Edinburgh 19th Jan 1870, she was 20. He was described as of London, an agent for the Scottish Reformation Society. Could he have been illegitimate, as his parents married in 1850? – Had his parents perhaps a “handfast” marriage? In the 1881 Census he is living in Emmanuel Vicarage in West Ham, Essex described as Vicar of Forest Gate aged 34 (!), birthplace Birmingham. His wife is given as 31 and in the 1891 Edinburgh Census she is aged 41. I have not found a birth registration for the Rev Dr Robert Ross.

e) Daisy Magdalena Morton ROSS born 29 Sept 1887 London. In the 1891 Edinburgh Census she appears as grand-niece of Lt-Col Alexander Aitken ROSS – (by chance Daisy was visiting and therefore I was able to track her parents whose existence I had not been aware of! I have found her elder siblings - the question now is whether more children were born between James –born ca.1879 & Daisy, born Sept 1887 … or after Daisy; it is also important to track the birth records to find out their full names and to have a look at the English Census for 1891; this family now has to be followed up)

ii) James Ross, born Edinburgh, Midlothian 8th August 1855. I have no other information regarding this man.

V Thomas ROSS born 30th Nov 1812, baptised 10th Jan 1813 (Tranent OPR) aged 25 (i.e. 25-29) in the 1841 Edinburgh Census living with his sister Isabella. He died ‘of disease of the heart’ Edinburgh 5th June 1846 aged 33, a tailor

VI John ROSS born 8th Jan 1815 baptised 12th Feb 1815 (Gladsmuir OPR), aged 25 (i.e. 25-29) in the 1841 Edinburgh Census living with his sister Isabella, a printer journeyman. I have found no other records of this man

VII William ROSS born ca 1817. He married Janet FORGIE /FORGUE 17th May 1839 St Cuthbert’s Edinburgh. She was the daughter of William Forgie a flesher or cattle dealer and Janet Jeffrey. In the 1841 Edinburgh Census (at Trades Maiden Lane, Grassmarket) he is described as aged 24, his wife 22; they were living with his widowed mother-in-law Janet FORGIE(sic) aged 44. In the 1851 Census (at Cowan’s Close), he is described as a blacksmith aged 34. (The births of his children, Adam, William ,Thomas & Elizabeth Amos are contained in a composite entry in the OPR St Cuthbert’s Edinburgh). His profession varies: a printer, publisher’s or stationer’s warehouseman, general porter, hammerman. He died Edinburgh 22nd Feb 1880 aged 63. His widow died 7th April 1899 aged 80 in Hutchestown Glasgow.

i) Janet ROSS died young, christened 30th March 1840 at Bread Street United Presbyterian Church, Edinburgh

ii) Janet ROSS born 18th July 1841 (registered 11th Aug 1842) “a former child of the same name having died”. I have found no other record of her

iii) Emily ROSS born ca 1842, aged 9 in 1851 Edinburgh Census as born Midlothian, Edinburgh . I have found no other record of her

iv) Adam ROSS born 31st Jan 1843, aged 17 in 1861 Edinburgh Census, mason’s labourer, died Edinburgh 23rd Feb 1916, single named after his paternal grandfather

v) William ROSS born Edinburgh 31st Oct 1847 unmarried in 1881, a coal carter. There is a big gap of more than four years since the birth of his elder brother; he is either the second son named after his maternal grandfather William Forgie OR he could be the third son named after his father!)

vi) Thomas ROSS born 9th May 1851,aged 26 when he married firstly at St. Andrew’s, Christina LAING 15th June 1877, a ‘general house servant’ she died 24 April 1878. In the 1891 Edinburgh Census, he is a newspaper printer’s engineer living 44 Lancefield Street, Anderston in three rooms with his second wife & their two children. He was a ‘practical engineer’ or an ‘engineer’s fitter and turner’. In 1913 he was living at 132 Kent Road Glasgow and was still there in 1916 when he was the informant of the death of his elder brother Adam. I don’t know when he died.

Issue:

a) Janet ROSS born 11th April 1878. I have found no other record of her, she is not with her father at the 1891 Census, what became of her?

Thomas married secondly Margaret ‘Maggie’ FINDLAY 30th Sept 1881 at 5, Catherine Street, Glasgow according to the forms of the Free Church of Scotland; she died Glasgow 25th May 1917, Thomas, now a printer’s engineer, was widowed again.

Issue:

b) Maggie Glen ROSS born Glasgow (Anderston) 20th January 1882. She married Joseph Duncan Mitchell and died aged 49 on 18th Dec 1931 of a cerebral haemorrhage, her father was still alive. She died at Hunterston East Kilbride her widower being the informant.

c) William ROSS born Glasgow (Anderston) 9th Jan 1884; he married Georgina MONCRIEFF, a clerkess, 24th April 1913 at Royal Halls Sauchiehall Str. in Glasgow according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. She was the daughter of William MONCRIEFF engineer’s pattern maker and Margaret MEEK. At the time of his marriage, he was living with his father at the same address as his father had later in 1916. He died Glasgow 9th June 1959 and was a retired electrical power station superintendant; his wife pre-deceased him in 1952. The informant at his death was Thomas C. WATSON, nephew-in-law (presumably a relative of his wife)

viii) Alexander Aitken ROSS born Edinburgh 26th March 1858 aged 23 unmarried in the 1881 Edinburgh census, an engine fitter; in the 1891 Census aged 33, he is an insurance agent living with wife, three children and mother-in-law in 3 rooms at 5 Largo Place North Leith; he married Agnes SHORTHOUSE, a cooking depot waitress daughter of George SHORTHOUSE (deceased, a coal miner) and Hannah MOCHRIE Glasgow, Kelvin 28th Dec 1883. In the 1901 Census he has changed his profession to boot and shoe traveller and they are at 40 Elderslie Street, Glasgow Kelvin. She died in Glasgow 23rd Sept 1917 aged 59. Less than a month later on 18th October 1917 Alexander Aitken ROSS died too at the age of 59 – the informant being his daughter Jessie (sic) - of malignant disease of trachea (6 months duration)

c) William Francis Gingell ROSS born 5 Largo Place,North Leith 24th Sept 1890; in 1901 Census, he was aged 10 a scholar. He was a chartered accountant; he married Martha Clark ROBERTSON, spinster aged 32, daughter of Peter ROBERTSON, joiner and Martha FRAME at the Kent Road United Free Church, Glasgow 6th Oct 1914. There was an application from William F G Ross, public accountant, to become a member of the St Andrew’s Society of Illinois 3rd Jan 1927 – all the details on the application such as birthplace, father, profession etc tally. He was a member till 1957. His address was Cary Avenue, Highland Park, Illinois. He moved to Wisconsin in 1943 and lived at Wildwood Lodge, Lake Shore Drive, Lake Geneva; in 1955 he lived at 700 Lake Shore drive, Lake Geneva. He died Sept 27 (1957 I presume) and is buried at North Shore Garden of memories, Green Bay Road, Lake Bluff, buried on Monday at 3.30.

It would be interesting to know if he left children and if we therefore have American cousins!

IX Lt-Colonel Alexander Aitken ROSS born Edinburgh 11th August 1823 (according to his army service record in the Public Record Office WO 76/71, 76/76, 76/78 and 76/84).He is presumably named after his brother who died shortly before his birth. He married Edinburgh at 8 Bruntsfield Place Newington, 22nd Feb 1859 Jane Fleming RUSSELL; she was born Edinburgh 23rd July 1832 and died Edinburgh 2nd July 1901; she was by profession a Governess and the daughter of William RUSSELL, leather merchant and Guild Brother of Edinburgh and his second wife Hannah FLEMING.

Alexander Aitken ROSS joined the Highland Light Infantry under age at 15 years and 7 months on 23rd April 1839. After rising through the ranks to Colour Sergeant then Sergeant major, he was commissioned Ensign in the 2 Battalion 17th Foot Leicestershire Regt., without purchase on 13th April 1858 and was appointed Adjutant the same day. He later joined the Army Pay Department and retired as a Lt-Colonel. He was living with the family at 8 Cobden Crescent in the 1891 Census of Edinburgh. In 1901 Census of 8, Newington Road, he is there with his wife and three children (Alexander, Jane and Isabella) with 9-year-old grandson Andrew visiting. There were two servants: a cook/domestic aged 21 and a housemaid aged 16.

He died Edinburgh 30th Nov 1901 and his will dated 10th Oct 1901 (SC 70/4/338 pp458-463 and SC70/5/84 p 599) was proven 22nd May 1902. He and his wife are buried in Newington Cemetery Edinburgh; the gravestone also commemorates his second daughter Jane Fleming Ross, his second son Alexander Aitken Ross (and wife) and his third son Robert Russell Ross (and wife)

In the 1891 Census of Edinburgh he is with his parents aged 30, an insurance clerk and unmarried. He then became a minister and went to Jamaica. He died in 1931 in Bradford, Yorkshire. He married Elsie Millicent LAW in 1908. She was born 1876 and died 1967.

ii) Alexander Aitken (“Aitken”) ROSS born Curragh, Ireland 12th Nov 1861, a doctor. In Edinburgh census 1881 a medical student; in the 1891 Edinburgh Census he is a medical student aged 29 with his parents. He graduated Edinburgh MB.CM 1893; the Medical Register records him at Boldon Colliery, Durham 1895/6; 1897 in Edinburgh. In 1898, he was the informant at his aunt Magdalene’s death (wife of his uncle Adam). He was executor of his father’s will 1902. The Medical Register gives his address as 8 Newington Road between 1897-1916 – but this was his father’s and then his sister’s house. The Post Office directories 1917-1920 give a Mrs A. Aitken Ross as living there, 1920/22 are missing, but there is no reference to a Mrs Ross in 1923. He had joined the Royal Army Medical Corps and served, like his nephew Andrew Russell Ross, in Gallipoli. He was a Lieut.-Colonel commanding the 11/3rd Lowland Field Ambulance. There he caught jaundice, was sent back to England but died in London on 24th November 1915. He and his wife are commemorated on the gravestone in Newington Cemetery, Edinburgh. He married Dorothy Margaret COOPER who died 5th April 1934.

James Ross was born May 21, 1786 in Cork Harbour (Ireland) on board a ship about to leave for North America. This doesn't mean they were Irish. They were probably Highland Scots being "cleared" and sent to Canada.

His son, James Ross was born Jan.26, 1832. He was one of the younger members of the family. He married Anne Jane McIntosh on November 8, 1854 in Toronto. (Anne was born June 6, 1828, and died in 1890 of apoplexy, aged 62). James Ross died in 1892 of pneumonia.

His son was James Frederick William Ross of Toronto, Canada who was a Doctor and evidently was the first person killed by an automobile in Toronto . (dates of birth/death unknown)
