This is a representative sample of the Rose Clan from the Rose Castle at Kilravock, Nairnshire,  Croy, Inverness, Highland, Scotland.  For the most part the Rose and Ross DNA tests don’t match.  However some tests in Group 1 of the Ross project are matches to Group G of the David Brown’s (dnarose@shaw.ca) Rose project.  You can read about the castle at: http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/features/featurehistory4819.html.  It is believed all the Barons were born in the castle.  Rose Chief ancestry can be found at http://users.eastlink.ca/~grose/roseclan.html.

 

Note from Admin:  According to “The Great Clan Ross” by John Robert Ross, the following Roses were actually named Ross until 1672 when there was a “delayed infeftment”.  When the 14th Laird, Hugh Ross, died the line passed to another family who changed the spelling to Rose and changed prior records to reference Rose.

(David Ross He was in the British Navy and was in the siege of Sebastopol during the Crimean War. This was one of the facts listed in his newspaper obituary.  Coordinator has a copy of his seaman's papers from the National Archives in Britain.  It lists his name, birth date, physical description, name of ship he served on “The Albion" and the name of the Captain "Stephen Lushington"  These last two items are correct when compared to an account of the siege of Sebastopol.  He was a crew member on the ship Constance from 1846 to 1848.)

All known family members who died in Ardcharnich are buried in the Clachen churchyard, Loch Broom parish, Scotland.  "Kenneth" is the logical name of the elder Ross based on family names and other Ross names buried at Clachen.  His pob comes from a Loch Broom story that the Rosses came from "Glen McNab".  There are many McNabs buried in Clachen and they apparently moved to the Ardcharnich area from an area now called Glen Sguaib.

           Shortly after their son Nelson Miller died about 4-5 years old- a little boy about the same age came to live with them in 1874 who was brought to them from Philadelphia by a young man named John Hawk, who was a former tenant of Renear. (One of Rinear's sons, Lincoln, had traveled with Hawk from Illinois to  Pennsylvania to help bring the little boy back to Illinois.  He remembers looking after the little boy in a cave in Pennsylvania and the boy telling him his name was Charley Ross) The Millers named this little boy Nelson Miller, the same name as their recently deceased son. Years later, John Hawk returned to visit Rinear and told him of the true identity of the little boy. In an argument over the fate of Nelson, Rinear killed Hawk and swore his son Lincoln to silence about the boy's true identity. This is the little boy we believe was Charles Brewster Ross. Later in his life, Rinear revealed to Nelson his true identity, but threatened to kill him if he ever revealed the truth before his death. Because of this threat, Nelson Miller changed his name to Gustav Blair. When Nelson's eldest son Ralph joined him in trying to prove his identity, Ralph also changed his name from Miller to Blair.  After this, certain events and realizations came to Nelson, and he left his family in search of proof that he was indeed Charles Brewster Ross.   Years later after a court hearing declared him to be Charles Brewster Ross, Nelson changed his name to Charles Brewster Ross.

George Ross b. ca 1629 Scotland; d. after 1705, Elizabethtown, Essex Co., New Jersey USA; m. Constance Little 7 Dec 1658 in the Governor of New Haven Colony's home (b. 1636, d. unknown).  He was deported to the Americas, after spending a cold winter in Dumbarton Cathedral.  George Ross arrived at Boston on ship John and Sarah of London, John Green master, in the Winthrop fleet, but was not listed as a passenger and was an indentured servant in Constant Little’s household, (by which exiles had to repay their passage money).  He was referred to 28 July 1651 in a letter from Rev. John Cotton.

 

In many, many immigrant or passenger lists, not all members of a family were listed (such as women and children and servants), so the numbers aboard a ship and the number arriving in a port never matched up.  A good explanation of this is in the book, Pennsylvania German Pioneers: A Publication of the Original Lists of Arrivals in the Port of Philadelphia from 1727 to 1808, by Ralph Baker Strassburger and William John Hinke  (Philadelphia: Pennsylvania German Society, 1932, reprinted 1992).
