                                             DESCENDANTS OF JAMES W. CHAMPION

Generation 1
:  James W. Champion  was born in 1792 in South Carolina (another source, Alabama
Soldiers, Vol. IV, by Gandrud, 1978 (War of 1812) indicates James was born in Georgia in 1795), and
died 3 July 1872 in Shelby County, Alabama.  He married Sarah Green(e) on 14/19 May 1814 at Mt.
Moriah Church in Warrenton, Georgia.  Sarah was born in 1794 in South Carolina.  James and Sarah
returned to South Carolina after their marriage where three of their children were born, and later returned
to Warren County, Georgia.  James served in Captain Heath's Militia and was a veteran of the War of
1812.  Their children are:
1.  Frank Champion was born in 1815 in South Carolina.
2.  Washington Champion was born in 1816 in South Carolina.
3.  Henry Thomas Champion married Winnifred Caroline Ward.
4.  John Champion was born in 1820 in Warren County, Georgia.  He married Margaret born in 1825.
5.  James Robert Champion was born 7 August 1823 in Warren County, Georgia, died 3 May 1863 (one
source indicates he was killed in action during the Civil War).  He married Mary Ann Sherbert on 28
December 1844 in Bibb County, Alabama.  Mary Ann was born 7 December 1819 in Centreville,
Alabama, and died 24 December 1888.  James and Mary are buried at Haysop Baptist Church, Bibb
County, Alabama.
6.  William Lee Champion was born in 1824 in Warren County, Georgia.  He married Rachel Ann Powell
on 13 August 1846 in Bibb County, Alabama.  Rachel was born in 1837 in Georgia.
7.  Jackson Champion was born 5 July 1828 in Warren County, Georgia, and died before 1870.  He
married Rebecca Lawley on 15 September 1850 in Shelby County, Alabama.
8.  Cynthia Champion  was born in 1828 in Georgia.
9.  Jasper Champion was born in 1830 in Georgia.
10.  Elizabeth Champion was born in 1832 in Georgia.  She married John Oglesby on 22 January 1850
in Shelby County, Alabama.
11.  Louisa Champion was born in 1833 in Georgia.
12.  Sarah Champion was born in 1835 in Georgia.
13.  James Newton Champion was born in 1835 in Georgia.
14.  Francis Champion was born in 1839 in Georgia.
15.  George W. Champion was born in 1841 in Georgia.

Generation 2:  Henry Thomas Champion was born in 1818 in Georgia, and died 16 June 1862 (he may
have died from the measles at the Confederate Hospital in Danville, Virginia).  He served with Company
G., 11th Alabama Infantry.  On 9 March 1843 he married Winnifred Caroline Ward.  She was born 9
January 1821, and died 13 September 1901 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.  Their children are:
1.  James Van Buren Champion was born 28 December 1843, and died 2 May 1916.  He married Belle
Deason.
2.  John Marquis de LaFayette Champion was born in 1845, and died in 1924 in Tuscaloosa County,
Alabama.  He married Amanda Phelps, she was born in 1846, and died in 1916 in Tuscaloosa County,
Alabama.
3.  Solomon Zachary Taylor Champion married Mary Catherine McGinnis.
4.  James Madison Champion was born 28 December 1847 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, and died
in 1922.  He married Mariah Jane Blanton.
5.  Infant son born in 1849.
6.  John M. Champion was born in 1851.
7.  Virgil A. Stuart Champion was born in July 1853 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.  He married first
Sarah Jadie born in 1842, and second Martha Estelle Jone Phillips.
8.  Jesse Casper Wister Champion was born 25 July 1855 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, and died 27
March 1930.  He married Sarah Frances Taylor born 11 November 1858, and died 27 December 1930.  
Jesse was a Primitive Baptist Preacher.
9.  Martha L. Champion was born in 1858 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.  She married Jack Morrison.  
10.  Mary Champion was born in 1859 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.  She married Matthew
Shuttlesworth in 1880 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.  Matthew was born in 1853.

Generation 3:  Solomon Zachery Taylor Champion was born 22 February 1847 in Tuscaloosa County,
Alabama, and died 1 December 1915 in Vandiver, Shelby County, Alabama.  The obituary of Solomon
reads:  "SZT Champion Dies Suddenly.  Mr SZT Champion, one of the best known and highly respected
citizens in the northern portion of the county, dropped dead while making a speech at Sterrett last
Thursday.  Heart trouble is said to be the cause of his sudden death.  Mr. Champion was 69 years old, a
confederate veteran, and a member of several secret organizations.  He had many friends throughout the
county who will regret to hear of his death".  The Advocate (Shelby County, Alabama) 19 December
1915.  (My Aunt Gurly Ruth Champion told me Solomon died during a meeting at Pleasant Grove Baptist
in Vandiver)  Solomon at age 18 enlisted in Company H., 44th Alabama Volunteer Infantry Regiment, at
Centreville, Alabama on 16 March 1864.  He married first Mattie Jadie, and second Mary Catherine
McGinnis.  Mary was born 24 October 1862, and died 12 May 1926, she and Solomon are buried at
Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Vandiver, Alabama.  The children of Solomon and Mary are:
1.  John S.A. Champion was born 30 July 1880.
2.  Artillar Champion was born 6 February 1882, and died 28 November 1930.  She married James W.
White.  James was born 28 August 1872, and died 16 January 1913.  He is the son of Andrew J. White
and Margaret Calvenia Cloud.  Margaret is the daughter of Squire Cloud and Margaret G. Parker and
half sister of Fadora Cloud (see Falkner).  James and Artillar are buried at Old Sterrett Cemetery,
Sterrett, Alabama.  A child is buried with them, but the stone is too worn to be read.
3.  Sanford Edward Champion was born 28 September 1883, and died 27 February 1965.  He married
Annie Rich.  Sanford is buried at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Vandiver, Alabama.
4.  Chelcie Columbus Champion was born 21 January 1886, and died 2 April 1972.  He married Hattie
Isbell, she was born 29 August 1891, and died 8 September 1970.  They are buried at Union Hill Freewill
Baptist Church, Vandiver, Alabama.
5.  Fred Harrison Champion married Ever Irene White.
6.  Robert E.B. was born 16 October 1890, he married Gracy.
7.  Roy Zachary Taylor Champion was born 28 February 1893, and died 9 January 1967.  He married
Myrtle Qumar Whitfield, she was born 20 December 1896, and died 14 April 1964.  They are buried at
Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Vandiver, Alabama.
8.  Joel P. Champion was born 15 November 1894, and died 6 January 1968.  He married Addie.  Joel
is buried at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Vandiver, Alabama.
9.  Yearby O. Champion was born 5 December 1895 , and died 26 January 1920.  He married Lula
Kendred.  Yearby is buried at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Vandiver, Alabama.
10.  Mary E. Champion was born in December 1898.
11.  Margie Champion married a Kindreck.
12.  May Champion married Lester Hollis.
13.  Ruby Champion.

Generation 4:  Fred Harrison Champion was born 7 December 1888, and died 19 July 1965.  He
married Ever Irene White, she was born 26 December 1896, and died 19 July 1980.  They are buried at
Ebenezer Primitive Baptist Church, Westover, Shelby County, Alabama.  Their children are:
1.  Myrtie Champion was born 27 August 1913, and died 23 September 1966.  She married first Lonnie
Stracner, and second Lee Patton.  Lee was born 22 July 1907, and died 25 December 1982.  Myrtie
and Lee are buried at Ebenezer Primitive Baptist Church, Westover, Alabama.
2.  Hugh D. Champion was born 28 May 1915, and died 4 February 1968.  He is buried at Ebenezer
Primitive Baptist Church, Westover, Alabama.
3.  William L. Champion was born 31 March 1917, and died 14 June 1968.  He is buried at Ebenezer
Primitive Baptist Church, Westover, Alabama.
4.  Mary Lee Champion was born 15 May 1919, and died 13 February 1997.  She married Jessie P.
McWhorter, he was born 24 October 1909, and died 18 July 1980.  They are buried at Mt. Tabor
Methodist Church, Westover, Alabama.
5.  Gurly Ruth Champion was born 20 February 1921.  She married Raymond F. Allen on 23 December
1936.  Raymond was born 23 March 1899, and died 21 January 1985.  Raymond is buried at Union
United Methodist Church, Westover, Alabama.  He is the son of George T. Allen and Ollie B.
6.  C.W. Champion married Carol Beulah Keith.
7.  Fred Harrison Champion, Jr. was born 26 November 1925, and died 21 March 1982.  He is buried at
Ebenezer Primitive Baptist Church, Westover, Alabama.
8.  Jesse Earl Champion was born 6 June 1931, and died 13 July 1992.  He is buried at Union United
Methodist Church, Westover, Alabama.

Generation 5:  C.W. Champion was born 3 July 1924 in Sterrett, Alabama, and died 27 November
1969 in Ocoee, Orange County, Florida.  He married Carol Beulah Keith on 27 July 1946 in Westover,
Alabama.  Carol was born 24 June 1923 in Birmingham, Alabama.  C.W. is a veteran of World War II,
and is buried at Ocoee City Cemetery, Ocoee, Florida.  Their children are:
1.  Charles Wesley Champion.
2.  Daryel Thomas Champion.
