Joanna Jane Westcott, spinster, of St. John’s
Were married on November 17th, 1859By H.M. Lowe, Archdeacon & IncumbentWitnesses were Archibald Nicholas, John Williams, Sarah Ann Westcott, and Elizabeth Smale You can view a scanned copy of the actual signed certificate that is in the church register. It appears that only the females knew how to sign their names on the certificate as the males signed with an X and the minister signed for them. Sarah Ann Westcott is Joanna Jane’s sister. John Williams is either a cousin or uncle of George. George and Joanna are the parents of Frederick Chaytor listed in the baptisms above. Either Joanna Jane just used the name Jane for the Baptism or the person who wrote it in the registers only heard her say Jane. * Reference to these entries are found in E.R. Seary’s book, Family Names of the Island of Newfoundland,
under the Chaytor, and Cheater headings. I will try to get more records from this church as time goes on. This church was used by the Cheater’s & Chaytor’s of Chamberlains until the one in Topsail was built in 1861.Cheri Wheeler
