Publication Date: February 19, 1996 Source: The Sacramento Bee Page: B5 Subjects: OBITUARY Region: Pacific Rim; Northern California Obituary: She was shy and quiet, but longtime registered nurse Vera Frances Danley made a big impression on those who knew her. "Vera had something to give everyone, whether an apple, an orange or words of wisdom," Warren Irby said of his cousin, who died last month after suffering a heart attack. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Andrew's A.M.E. Church, 2131 Eighth St., where she was a member for 20 years. Miss Danley, who was in her early 70s, never married. She spent most of her nursing career working at the Sacramento County Hospital, forerunner to the UC Davis Medical Center. After retirement, she worked part-time at Mercy Hospital. One of the people she befriended while at the medical center was a patient she treated when the woman was hospitalized in the early 1970s with congestive heart disease, the same ailment that ultimately killed Miss Danley. "She was a good friend to me until the very end," said Mildred Owens. "She used to come over and visit and I'd go over to her house. Whenever I needed to know anything about medicine, she was always there for me. She always had her books open." Owens said Miss Danley was always going back to school to keep current with her work and regularly walked five miles a day for exercise, rain or shine. She also enjoyed playing tennis, swimming, hiking and gardening. "I never even knew she had a bad heart," Owens said. "She never told me." Miss Danley, a Sacramento resident for more than 30 years, was born in Greenville, S.C. She received her nursing education at Benedict College in Columbia, S.C., before going to work in Fresno and eventually moving to Sacramento. Survived by a brother, H.B. Danley of San Francisco; two nephews, a niece and numerous cousins, Miss Danley is remembered by friends and family as someone who would go out of her way to do just about anyone a favor. "Twelve years ago I met my cousin Vera Frances for the first time," said Michael V. Irby of Sacramento. "We laughed and talked. I always listened to Vera. She easily portrayed love in life and passed it on, where it quietly sank in. I loved her and will miss her. "She was one of the sweetest people ever to walk this earth. She always greeted people with a smile. She loved life and will be missed by all who loved her."
