We are quite a group now, and we are all learning from each other. It is pretty long so you may want to cut it some. Thanks for all your help. Judy Cummins French Descendants of Unknown Cromeans Generation No. 1 1. Unknown1 Cromeans. Children of Unknown Cromeans are: 2 i. James2 Cromeans, born Abt. 1795. + 3 ii. Jacob Cromeans Cummins, born Abt. 1799 in NORTH CAROLINA; died in TN or Ala. + 4 iii. Absolem Cromeans, born 1809 in NORTH CAROLINA; died Bef. 1855 in Ala. + 5 iv. Josiah Cromeans Cummins, born 1817 in NC. Generation No. 2 3. Jacob Cromeans2 Cummins (Unknown1 Cromeans) was born Abt. 1799 in NORTH CAROLINA (Source: 1850 Census of Hancock (now Winston) Co. Ala), and died in TN or Ala. He married Rebecca Unknown. Notes for Jacob Cromeans Cummins: It appears that for some reason the family name was changed while in Alabama. The census records for 1850 show Jacob with the last name of Cromeans. Still trying to verify this at National Archives in Atlanta. 4-26-94 JMF Alabama 1830 AND 1850 census for Walker and Hancock Co., respectively, show Jacob under "Cromeans." He is not shown as owning land in the 1855-1860 Land Records in the Alabama Archives. I am confused - I was told by census records copied of my mother that Lindsey's father was Jacob. Since Ellis Cummins, descendant of Houston, told me that Reuben came to Tn with his Uncle Houston, then Lindsay and Houston would have to have the same father. Maury Co. Cemetery books show that Houston's father was Abner. I will try to verify with others. More About Jacob Cromeans Cummins: Fact 1: SPENCER CEMETERY, MT. PLEASANT, TENNESSEE Fact 2: 1830, IN WALKER CO., ALA. (Source: 1830 CENSUS OF ALABAMA) Notes for Rebecca Unknown: The general opinion is that this is Jacob's second wife. More About Rebecca Unknown: Fact 1: SPENCER CEMETERY, MT. PLEASANT, TENNESSEE Children of Jacob Cummins and Rebecca Unknown are: + 8 i. Lindsay Cromeans3 Cummins, born Abt. 1824 in TN, ALA or GA; died 1874 in ALABAMA. 9 ii. Sarah Cromeans Cummins, born Abt. 1833 in TN (Source: 1850 Census of Hancock Co, (now Winston Co.) Ala.). Notes for Sarah Cromeans Cummins: I remember stories from my Grandmother Cummins about an Aunt "SALLY", Sally is a nickname for Sarah. 10 iii. Elizabeth Cromeans Cummins, born Abt. 1835 in TN (Source: 1850 Census of Hancock Co, (now Winston Co.) Ala.). 11 iv. Caroline Cromeans Cummins, born Abt. 1836 in TN (Source: 1850 Census of Hancock Co, (now Winston Co.) Ala.). Notes for Caroline Cromeans Cummins: Could this Caroline be the same shown with Lindsey in the 1870 census? Could she have been a sister living with a widowed brother? 12 v. Parker Cromeans Cummins, born Abt. 1839 in TN (Source: 1850 Census of Hancock Co, (now Winston Co.) Ala.). 13 vi. Margaret Cromeans Cummins, born Abt. 1844 in TN (Source: 1850 Census of Hancock Co, (now Winston Co.) Ala.). Notes for Margaret Cromeans Cummins: Margaret is probably a twin to Mary. 14 vii. Mary Cromeans Cummins, born Abt. 1844 in TN (Source: 1850 Census of Hancock Co, (now Winston Co.) Ala.). Notes for Mary Cromeans Cummins: Mary was probably one of a set of twins because Margaret is shown as the same age in 1850 census. 15 viii. Vinea Cromeans Cummins, born Abt. 1846 in TN (Source: 1850 Census of Hancock Co, (now Winston Co.) Ala.). Notes for Vinea Cromeans Cummins: Unsure of the first name on this female, the census was difficult to read. She was the last child born in Tennessee. The family probably moved to Alabama in the years between 1846 and 1849 when the next twins were born. 16 ix. Hancock Cromeans Cummins, born Abt. 1849 in ALABAMA (Source: 1850 Census of Hancock Co, (now Winston Co.) Ala.). Notes for Hancock Cromeans Cummins: I took a guess at the first name because on census records I could only make out "___COCK". as the family had just moved to Alabama and the county name was Hancock, I guessed at this name. 17 x. Susan Cromeans Cummins, born Abt. 1849 in ALABAMA (Source: 1850 Census of Hancock Co, (now Winston Co.) Ala.). Notes for Susan Cromeans Cummins: It appears that Susan is one of a set of twins with the male assumed to be named Hancock being the other. See notes on Hancock. 4. Absolem2 Cromeans (Unknown1) was born 1809 in NORTH CAROLINA, and died Bef. 1855 in Ala. He married Nancy ?. Notes for Absolem Cromeans: Absolem was in Walker Co, Ala in 1830, 1840, and Hancock Co (formerly Walker Co.) in 1850. He was not shown as owning land in the 1855-1860 records in Ala. Archives. Children of Absolem Cromeans and Nancy ? are: 18 i. Mary Cromeans3 Cummins, born 1830. 19 ii. Amy Cromeans Cummins, born 1832. 20 iii. William Cromeans Cummins, born 1835. 21 iv. Elamensan Cromeans Cummins, born 1837. 22 v. Elines Cromeans Cummins, born Abt. 1839 in ALABAMA. 23 vi. Clarisa Cromeans Cummins, born 1841. Notes for Clarisa Cromeans Cummins: Listed as owning 120 acres in Hancock Co, Ala. under the name of "Commens." This is a good indication that her father had died before this date, 1855-1860. Ala Archives. More About Clarisa Cromeans Cummins: Fact 1: October 01, 1857, SHOWN AS OWNING 120 ACRES IN ALABAMA. 24 vii. Nancy Cromeans Cummins, born 1843. 25 viii. John Cromeans Cummins, born 1845. 26 ix. Gincy Cromeans Cummins, born 1847. 27 x. Sarah Cromeans Cummins, born 1849. 5. Abner Cromeans2 Cummins (Unknown1 Cromeans) was born 1811 in NORTH CAROLINA, and died February 15, 1886 in Maury CO, TN (Source: Maury Co. Cemetery Books, pg 625). He married (1) Louisa Unknown. He married (2) Mary Wright. Notes for Abner Cromeans Cummins: Maury Co. Cemetery show Louisa Cummins 1817 - 11/10/1910 buried in Spencer Hill and I assumed that this must be Abner's wife at the time of his death in 1886, but son, Houston, is listed as the son of Abner and Mary Wright Cummins. I will check other sources. I am confused - I was told by records of my mother that Lindsey's father was Jacob. Since Ellis Cummins, descendant of Houston, told me that Reuben came to Tn with his Uncle Houston, then Lindsay and Houston would have to have the same father. Maury Co. Cemetery books show that Houston's father was Abner. I will try to verify with others. Spencer Hill. Josiah Cromeans2 Cummins (Unknown1 Cromeans) was born 1817 in NC. He married Elizabeth ?. Notes for Josiah Cromeans Cummins: Found first in the census of 1850 of Hancock Co, Ala, and owning 280 acres, but probably half is his and half his relatives. Found two land certificates dated 1855 and two dated 1858 in Ala. Archives. More About Josiah Cromeans Cummins: Fact 1: August 27, 1855, 40 ACRES LISTED IN ANNALS OF NORTHWEST ALA. Fact 2: September 21, 1858, 80 ACRES LISTED IN ANNALS OF NORTHWEST ALA. Children of Josiah Cummins and Elizabeth ? are: 38 i. John Cromeans3 Cummins, born 1846. 39 ii. Busel Cromeans Cummins, born 1848. Generation No. 3 8. Lindsay Cromeans3 Cummins (Jacob Cromeans2, Unknown1 Cromeans) was born Abt. 1824 in TN, ALA or GA (Source: (1) 1850 CENSUS OF WINSTON CO, ALA, (2) 1860 Census of Winston Co., Ala., (3) 1870 Census of Winston Co., Ala.), and died 1874 in ALABAMA. He married (1) Pernesia Unknown Abt. 1851 in ALABAMA. He married (2) Caroline Rush Abt. 1860 in ALA. Notes for Lindsay Cromeans Cummins: The story is that Lindsay was murdered in Ala. while married to Caroline Rush. Rubin is said to have been with him and brought his body home. This is said to have happened in about 1874. In the 1860 census, there is a Caroline listed as "Cummins" instead of "Cromeans", but since Lindsey is shown in that census with Pernesia, I doubt that this is Caroline Rush Cummins. Pernesia died between the 1860 and 1870 census since Lindsey is shown with Caroline, age 43 b. in Tn., in the 1870 census. Since there is a four year gap between Clarinda age 8 in 1870 and Felix age 4 in 1870, it is possible that Pernesia died about 1862. Lindsey and Caroline may have married about 1864, but this marriage may not be found since so many courthouses burned during the "War of Northern Aggression." Could Caroline, b 1834 daughter of Jacob, be the same shown with Lindsey in the 1870 census? Could she have been a sister living with a widowed brother? The archives in Ala need to be checked to see if this can be verified. Found Lindsey (sic) as "Cummins" in the LAND RECORDS FROM ALABAMA, 1855 - 1860, as was the rest of the family. Last name in the 1860 and 1870 census is "Commons/Commens." 1860 census of Winston Co., Littlesville, T 10 R 9, Ala. that shows dwelling and family #81 as follows: Lindsay Commens 36/34/30 M Farmer Geo Pernesia 25 F NC Rebecca 8 F Geo Reuben 3 M Geo George 1 M Geo Handwritten (by Dorothy McCall MacGregor) copy of the 1870 census (she had calculated all the years of birth and not listed the age as shown), marked "between Halleyville and Double Springs, Ala." shows the following as all one family and all born in Ala: Lindsey Commons b.1824, Caroline Rush 1837, Beckie (Rebecca) 1851, (Lindsey's) Ruben C. Oct 11 1854, (Lindsey's) Manomey March 20 1855, (Abner's) George 1860, (Abner's) Clarinda 1862, (Abner's?) Stella 1866. (Abner's?) Felix 1867, (Lindsey's?) Charlie 1868, (Lindsey's?) Notes for Rebecca Cromeans Cummins: This is the mother of Mrs. Ward Vernon who supplied some of this information and the rest from the 1830 and 1870 census of Winston (Walker) Co. Alabama. 41 ii. Ruben Cromeans Cummins, born October 10, 1854 in WINSTON CO., AL; died January 21, 1940 in MAURY CO., TN. He married (1) Manomey Cummins October 1880 in Lawrence Co., Tn?. He married (2) Maggie Young December 23, 1895 in Maury CO, TN. He married (3) Winnie Wallace August 27, 1925 in MAURY CO., TN. Notes for Ruben Cromeans Cummins: This is Judy and Barbara's great grandfather. He is supposedly the young person who witnessed the murder of his father in Alabama. He returned to Tennessee after he reached maturity with his stepmother, Caroline, and most of the family. Maury Co. Houston was Ellis Cummins' grandfather. Houston was a cousin of Rubin. Also, Abner was Rubin's cousin and they all came from Winston Co. Ellis never heard why they came to Tn and never heard that Rubin's father was murdered." (my note - could it be he wasn't or that someone in the family did it) "Some of Frank's family raised near Florence, Ala (s. of Florence) Ellis thinks Ruebin was an adult when he came to Tn. Ruebin had a brother, Charlie, who was 9 years old when they came to Tn. When Charlie's mother died his mind went off and he remained so all his life. Ellis recalls some relatives saying that they should go to Winston Co. to reclaim the land that Ruebin, Abner and all left. No one ever did." Ellis's address at the time was 1801 Scribner Ave. in Columbia. I don't know if this will help you or not, but thought you might be interested. Second note of Mother's "Rubin moved to Maury about 1880 from Winston Co., Ala and brought his mother and brothers and sisters up 2 years later. She left Ala in June and arrived in Aug, 1882. More About Ruben Cromeans Cummins: Fact 1: SPENCER CEMETERY, MT. PLEASANT, MAURY CO., TENNESSEE Fact 2: 1870, CENSUS SAYS HE WAS 12 YEARS OLD MAKING DOB 1858. Fact 3: Death Certificate lists Carolina Rush as his mother (Source: Kenneth A Warise.) Notes for Manomey Cummins: The birthplace here is a guess. Will try to verify later. She was one of several wives of Ruben Cummins and first cousin to him. I had this name as "AOMI" from DMM records, but Dot Gammons has "Naomi" but at Spencer Hill Cemetery, I found a tombstone for "Manomey" and this seems to be her and would explain the different names, probably all nicknames for this name. Notes for Maggie Young: William Young, Age 30, and Rhoda Young, age 17, were found in the 1860 Census of Maury Co., Tn with two daughters, Virginia age 4 and Maggie age 3. This is Maggie's father and step-mother. *TN STATE ARCHIVES On a tombstone in Pleasant Mount Cemetery, a barely readable stone apears to say "Maggie C.," but any other info is not readable from stone or photo of stone. The stone has a dove on it like many stones for children. Notes for Winnie Wallace: This marriage found in Maury Co., TN., Records. Unsure if this was another wife of our relative, but it seems a pretty sure bet. 42 iii. George Cummings Cummins, born Abt. 1857 in HOUSTON, WINSTON, ALABAMA. He married Jensey Pernetta Cummins Abt. 1879. Notes for George Cummings Cummins: An 82 year old woman was living with him. Her name was "Irihama" and was born in Alabama as were her parents. She is probably his grandmother, but evidently carries the name Cummings because no last name is shown for her. He also had living with him a step-son, John R. Buford, born in abt 1872; a sister-in-law, Oma Buford (divorced marked to side on DMM's notes), and born in abt 1860 in Alabama; a female child listed as daughter, born abt 1879, named A.M. Notes for Ruben Cromeans Cummins: This is Judy and Barbara's great grandfather. He is supposedly the young person who witnessed the murder of his father in Alabama. He returned to Tennessee after he reached maturity with his stepmother, Caroline, and most of the family. Maury Co.
