Notes for Jacob Cromeans Cummins:
It appears that for some reason the family name was changed while in
Alabama. The census records for 1850 show Jacob with the last name of
Cromeans. Still trying to verify this at National Archives in Atlanta.

Alabama 1830 AND 1850 census for Walker and Hancock Co., respectively,
show
Jacob under "Cromeans." He is not shown as owning land in the 1855-1860
Land Records in the Alabama Archives.
I am confused - I was told by census records copied of my mother that
Lindsey's father was Jacob. Since Ellis Cummins, descendant of Houston,
told me that Reuben came to Tn with his Uncle Houston, then Lindsay and
Houston would have to have the same father. Maury Co. Cemetery books
show
that Houston's father was Abner. I will try to verify with others.

Hill and I assumed that this must be Abner's wife at the time of his

in 1886, but son, Houston, is listed as the son of Abner and Mary Wright
Cummins. I will check other sources.

Found first in the census of 1850 of Hancock Co, Ala, and owning 280
acres,
but probably half is his and half his relatives. Found two land
certificates dated 1855 and two dated 1858 in Ala. Archives.

Notes for Lindsay Cromeans Cummins:
The story is that Lindsay was murdered in Ala. while married to Caroline
Rush. Rubin is said to have been with him and brought his body home.
This
is said to have happened in about 1874. In the 1860 census, there is a
Caroline listed as "Cummins" instead of "Cromeans", but since Lindsey is
shown in that census with Pernesia, I doubt that this is Caroline Rush
Cummins. Pernesia died between the 1860 and 1870 census since Lindsey
is
shown with Caroline, age 43 b. in Tn., in the 1870 census. Since there
is
a four year gap between Clarinda age 8 in 1870 and Felix age 4 in 1870,
it
is possible that Pernesia died about 1862. Lindsey and Caroline may
have
married about 1864, but this marriage may not be found since so many
courthouses burned during the "War of Northern Aggression." Could
Caroline, b 1834 daughter of Jacob, be the same shown with Lindsey in
the
1870 census? Could she have been a sister living with a widowed
brother?
The archives in Ala need to be checked to see if this can be verified.

Last name in the 1860 and 1870 census is "Commons/Commens."

"The cummins families did come from Winston County, ALa. but just moved
away and left it. Houston was Ellis Cummins' grandfather. Houston was
a
cousin of Rubin. Also, Abner was Rubin's cousin and they all came from
Winston Co. Ellis never heard why they came to Tn and never heard that
Rubin's father was murdered." (my note - could it be he wasn't or that
someone in the family did it) "Some of Frank's family raised near
Florence,
Ala (s. of Florence) Ellis thinks Ruebin was an adult when he came to
Tn.
Ruebin had a brother, Charlie, who was 9 years old when they came to Tn.
When Charlie's mother died his mind went off and he remained so all his
life. Ellis recalls some relatives saying that they should go to
Winston
Co. to reclaim the land that Ruebin, Abner and all left. No one ever
did."
Ellis's address at the time was 1801 Scribner Ave. in Columbia. I
don't
know if this will help you or not, but thought you might be interested.

Co.,
Ala and brought his mother and brothers and sisters up 2 years later.

The birthplace here is a guess. Will try to verify later. She was one
of
several wives of Ruben Cummins and first cousin to him. I had this name
as
"AOMI" from DMM records, but Dot Gammons has "Naomi" but at Spencer Hill
Cemetery, I found a tombstone for "Manomey" and this seems to be her and
would explain the different names, probably all nicknames for this name.
Notes for Maggie Young:
William Young, Age 30, and Rhoda Young, age 17, were found in the 1860
Census of Maury Co., Tn with two daughters, Virginia age 4 and Maggie
age
3. This is Maggie's father and step-mother. *TN STATE ARCHIVES
On a tombstone in Pleasant Mount Cemetery, a barely readable stone
apears
to say "Maggie C.," but any other info is not readable from stone or
photo
of stone. The stone has a dove on it like many stones for children.

her.

sister-in-law, Oma Buford (divorced marked to side on DMM's notes), and
born in abt 1860 in Alabama; a female child listed as daughter, born abt
1879, named A.M. Buford and her parents were born in Alabama, Ruben
Cummings listed as a brother to George and a field hand born in abt 1856

I was told by my grandmother, Florence Young Cummins, that as a child

she was "devilish" or bad, the family would call her "Sally" after a
young
aunt who was often mischievous. The 1900 census of Maury Co shows a
married female, Sally M. Scribner, 18, with a husband 23 years old (name
unreadable) and a daughter, Alice M., age 11 months. The 1900 census of
Maury Co., Tn., shows Florence's birth date as Sept., 1884, which
differs
from information taken from Cummins family bible in the possession of
Bessie Cummins Eddlemon. Another date of 1885 is given by Dot Gammons
(a
granddaughter of Florence) for Florence's birthday with a DOD of
1/25/1966,
at Bell-Aire Manor Nursing Home, Maury Co. Tn.
