Subject: ISAAC CUMMINGS / LYNDEDON/FAMILIES Date: Wed, 7 Jul 1999 19:53:25 EDT From: Chascum@aol.com Subj: ISAAC CUMMINGS / LYNDEDON Subj: Fouled up! Date: 97-05-23 08:23:16 EDT From: LYNDEDON To: Chascum Hi, I have been enjoying and printing out everyone's input and output. A lot of information is arriving from all over. I thought that I would write what I have in my "Randall" book regarding the Cummings Line. This is a New England line. I am still filling in spots with time allowing. I realize there may be many errors and omissions but patience is a virture that we all have. Sometimes. Isaac Cummings, according to tradition, was of Scottish ancestry, claiming descent from the "Red Cummin" of Badenoch, in the southeastern district of Iverness Shire. here the clan flourished from 1080 to 1330, and then began to decline. Some deduce their origin from Normandy and others from Northumberland. According to the Chronicle of Nelrose, the first of the name was slain at Alnwich with Malcolm III in 1203 leaving two sons, John and William. From John all the Cummins in Scotland are said to be descended. Sir John, The "Red Cummin" was the first Lord of Badenoch, and in 1240 was Ambassador from Alexander II to Louis IX of France. His son John was called the Black Lord of Badenoch. As the competitor for the crown of Scotland, "as son and heir of John, who was son of Richard, son of William, son of Hextilda, daughter and heiress of Gothrick, who was son and heir of Donald, King of Scotland". The son of this Lord was the last Lord of Badenoch. The badge of the clan in Gaelic was "Lus Mhic Cuiminn", in English, the Cummin plant. 1. Isaac Cummings was born probably around 1600/01. Of his wife nothing is known save she died before 1677. ( I have a MargaretMarie \\ M. 1632, not sure of this). The first mention in the Essex County records of Isaac is an entry at Ipswich, showing he owned a planting lot at Ipswich Village previous to July 25, 1639. He was made freeman May 18, 1642, and was a proprietor at Watertown. In 1652 he bought 150 acres of land in Topsfield. This farm began at what is now known as the Hobbs-Bell place and continued down both sides of the brook to what is now called Howlett's Brook. He was a deacon of the church in Topsfield for many years. He died between May 8 and 22, 1677. His will was probated June 14, 1677. In it he made his son John his sole executor and "do give him my house and lands being forty acres more or less consisting of upland and meadow". If I can be of help in your line or anyone else's please let me know. You are doing a great deal of work, but it is work that we all love to work at. Thanks for including me in your input and output of everyone joining forces. Lynde Stewart, MainFlor@aol.com or LYNDEDON@aol.com. Now I hope I can capture this letter to send to you. I have two pictures of headstones of a Isaac Hazeltine Bailey, youngest son of Isaac H. and Phoebe Cummings Bailey, born in Yarmouth, May 20, 1818, died in New York City March 24, 1899. First headstone is not that legible. It says Phoebe Cummings wife of Isaac Bailey ------ Alden ---1874. I am not sure where these stones are, maybe in Freeport, Yarmouth. Questionable. Also, have a picture of the Frank Cummings house, on the Eastern Prom, Portland, Maine which was torn down. Our Aunt Sarah Cumming(s) Ricker lived there. There is also a Cummings House in Freeport, Maine, not far from LL Beans. It has been a bed and breakfast inn for a number of years.
