Now that we have found out that the Cummins that arrived in PA around 1700
+/-
were Irish or Scotch/Irish that spent time in Ireland before coming to PA,
the question is--
Is anyone in the Charlesgram loop holding data on the ship manifests,
arrival
ports,
departure ports or any material that relates to these people that settled in
Lancaster Co., PA?
Via Mrs Edythe R Whitley Historian and Genealogist Nashville, TN we have the
data that shows the movements from PA to north central NC to TN. (East NC
not
in the trekk-she says those Cummins not a related group). Her paper dated
1940.
So, if you are a western NC or TN type Cummins or have roots to that, you
can
(probably) find your way back to PA and Ireland.
Mrs Whitley is no longer with us.
And, the data she produced connects to me and I am locked on and tracking.
Also,
I made a msg to the Charlesgram loop once before on this subject and had one
bite. A msg about Cummins in east NC, which is not covered in the research.
Surely there are Cummins out there that have enough data to connect with
Orange, Co, Guilford, Co., Mecklenburg, Co. and Surry Co in NC plus
Williamson and Davidson Cos., TN to make a few more cousins links. Or -I
was
going to used a bad word!

Welcome to the search and the Cummins finders. Below is a
descendancy report on Isaac B. Parr which gives you two Cummins
connections as you will see. Charles Cummins gave you a good rundown on
the basis of the Cummins Family that we are in and also showed you that
we do not know anything before 1793 on this family.
Hope this will give you some good clues. Let me know if you
have anything to add to the data that I am sending. Obviously you can
give us your line back to Thomas Jefferson Parr since you do not show on
this data that I am sending. Thanks for any data that you can provide.
I am a descendant of Josephus Cummins, one of the sons of Joseph
and Lydia Fleming Cummins so we are cousins of some number.

Hi Avalon,
A friend of mine in Panora, IA checked an obit for me and found the
following, believed to be published in the Panora Vedette, after Jan 1,
1944:
==============================================
MATTIE CUMMINS
Martha Jane, better known as Mattie Cummins, the daughter of Shelton and
Nancy Cummins, was born in Illinois on Oct 14, 1861, and passed away at her
home January 1, 1944, at the age of 82 years, 2 months and 17 days. At an
early age she and her parents moved to Iowa and settled in Dallas County.
After the death of her father in 1896, M.P. Barton, who had made his home
with them, took charge of the farm. In the spring of 1902 they moved to
Panora, where she has since resided.
She was from a family of nine children. One brother, E G Cummins of St.
Louis survives. Also a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at the home Monday afternoon by Rev E R
Allen. Interment was made in the Morrisburg cemetery.
==============================================
"Mattie" Cummins is buried next to her brother, Henry Clay Cummins in the
Morrisburg cemetery. The dates "1861-1944" are on the tombstone. The
Family
Bible of Maria Cummins Smithson had Martha Jane Cummins listed as born Oct
14, 1862. Until I received the obit I didn't know for sure if Mattie and
Martha Jane were the same person or not. The obit for Nancy Cooper Cummins
listed Mattie as a daughter. I believe now that the Bible record (or
hand-written transcription thereof) is in error.
This obit also confirms that John Shelton Cummins was commonly known by his
middle name.

re TAYLOR: Yes, my Taylors were definite stay-at-homes, They founded
Danbury,
CT,
in 1684, and pretty much stayed there. WASPs, all.
re CUMMING: The Cummings and Grants are from a book I have: GRANTS And Their
Relatives, by John P Grant, privately published in 1926. It actually lists
my
father and his siblings! Grant and Cumming roots are all in Inverness,
Scotland
area, and all seem to have settled in mid-NY state, from Catskill to Hobart.
This
line seems to be new to FTM. When and if I finish enering the data from the
book,
I plan to publish on FTM.

Hi
Since I just rejoined the list, I don't know how many of you are aware of
this web site:
California County Biographies and Histories
http://primusweb.com/cgi-bin/biosrch.pl
Steve Williams who is the GenWeb coordinator of the Tulare County,
California site has been entering indexes from California county histories
into his California County Biographies and Histories web site for several
months. He currently has about 100 of the 500 or so county histories that
have been written for California. A couple of months ago, he installed a
search engine that will search all the books and produce a list of all the
people with the requested surname, the name of the book where their bio
appears, and the page it is on. Below is a sample page taken today from his
web site. I also tried to run Cummins, but it would not work for some
reason. The search engine can get tempermental at times. If you believe
that one of your ancestors came to California and you are looking for a
biography of him or one of his children, this may be the place to find it.
But, please remember that there are about 400 books that have not yet been
listed on the web site.

Hi All,
After an absence from Charlie's list for about 3 years, I am back to try
again.
I am still looking for the parents of James Cummins, born in Greenbrier
Virginia in 1814. He last lived in Ray County, MO before coming to
California in 1857. I believe that he was related to Moses Cummins who also
lived in Ray County from about 1840 until his death around 1880. James was
also related to Joseph Cummins who lived in Ray County, MO in the 1850s and
in California after that.
A record I have says that James was the half uncle of Joseph Cummins. That
is the only lead I have to help identify James parents or any of his
siblings.
If anyone has researched the Moses Cummins family in Ray County and can help
me locate any information about them, please let me know. I have tried to
get research done in Ray County, but have had no luck yet.
Thank you for your help.

Please add me to those receiving your news. I first knew about your web
page about four years ago when I lived in Oregon. A friend who was on-line
(I was not) knew I had a Joseph Cummings in the line I was then tracing. He
turned out to be an incorrect line and too young to be your Joseph. I now
have my correct line, and have a Joseph in MA who disappears after his Rev.
War service, so there is a remote possibility he might be the one you are
searching for. (He had a younger brother named William, my gggrandfather. I
think you mentioned a deed witnessed by a brother named William. Where was
it registered? My William is, briefly, missing from VT about 1804 -1807,
when he was in trouble for debt. About 1804 he inherits land in MA from his
mother's brother. (Joseph inherits also, but has a judgement against him),
and he returns to VT around 1810 and continues to live there until he dies
in 1831.
I am the sister of Cherill Lash who is on your list. Obviously, she and I
are researching the same line.

Have been wondering if any news of Cummings activity has been sent that I
missed? My address should be kaytowle
aol.com. I don't know why I sent in
the
home address as I don't use it any more. I received some information about
Cummings in Boxford and Dunstable. Both towns are mentioned in some
information I have about my g-grandfather Samuel Parker Cummings and
grandfather Harlan Scott Cummings born in Georgetown, married in Groveland.
Samuel Parker Cummings was married in Groveland in 1855 to Sarah E. Wood
also
born in Groveland. I haven't been able to find out much more and have
searched from Nat. Archives. Essex Institute and Salt Lake City plus
libraries in and around Lynn. I was born in Lynn and lived in Swampscott
until marriage and never went back to live. Was hoping I might find some
connections in your association. Have read all the info in books available
about Cummings but can't get myself connected. I tried the Lynn Historical
Society on one trip back east without success. Used the Mormon Stake in
Florida and lots of wonderful information but not about Cummings. Plan to
try
the branch of Nat. Archives down the road from here but not expecting to
find
what I need. Will go with a posititve approach however. Hoping to hear
something from someone that might at least get me on the right track.
expecting more storms here next week and many places are still oozing water
from the rain drenched earth so don't know what will happen with the next
one. Guess Long Beach got some bad weather too. Where is sunny CA? I should
have stayed in the east although not far from where we lived in FL, the
tornados were terrible. Sincerely, Kay Towle
