H. A. WISE, of the firm of Andrews, Wise & Putnam, Springfield; is a native of Massachusetts, born in Deerfield Jan. 18, 1845. His youth was spent on a farm and attending school; he began his business career as a clerk in Greenfield, Mass., when about 21 years of age; subsequently learned the photographer's art, and was thus engaged in Greenfield until 1869, when he removed to and continued his business in Springfield until the fall of 1874; during this time, he also conducted a gallery in Xenia. In January, 187 6, he became a member of the firm of Wilson, Wise & Putnam, who were the successors of Rice & Co.; this firm continued without change until 1878, during which time they had established a branch house at Urbana, under the firm name of H. A. Wise & Co., Mr. Wise being in charge; in 1878, Mr. Wilson took the Urbana stock, and Mr. Wise returned to the establishment here, the firm then being Wise & Putnam until April, 1880, when Mr. Andrews came in, and the style of the firm became as now, Andrews, Wise & Putnam. Mr. Wise is now in the prime of life, systematic, enterprising and successful in business, and affable and respected in the social circle. He married, in 1868, Miss Frances E. Burnam, who was also a native of Deerfield, Mass.; she having died, he married, in 1876, Miss D Flora, daughter of William Ford, now a resident of Urbana, but formerly for a number of years a resident of this city; two children have been born of the second union-H. HYSER, Erma (Baker) 84, of Springfield, passed peacefully from life on this earth at her home Wednesday afternoon, October 8, 2008, surrounded by her only child, Dianne Pullins, her son-in-law, Ed, sister Vera, dear Pastor, John Wilson, family and friends including her devoted care giver, Annette Howard. She had an unwavering devotion to her husband of over 60 years, Walter, who preceded her in death. Erma was a private person whose life revolved around her husband, family, home, and in her early years, her church, First Christian Church. Of her many talents were growing fabulous flowers and a couturier seamstress making all of her daughter and grandson's early clothes. However, her greatest joy was cooking fabulous meals for her family, especially at holidays you could always count on a real feast. Erma, better known as David's Nana, rejoiced in David, Cambridge, Massachusetts, her only grandchild, and was devoted to him. He was truly the light of her life. She taught him the joy of antiquing, which they always did at a drop of the hat right up to her death. Erma had three sisters and two brothers she loved very much. Vera Mendenhall of Springfield, Eileen Baker, deceased, Freida Massie, deceased, Roger and Marvin Baker, deceased and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her father, Grover Baker, mother, Roxie (Jenkins) and stepfather, Ralph Nawman. She was a shining star, the center of our family's universe, which is now extinguished. Erma is already sadly missed. She will never be forgotten and will always be loved. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday in the CONROY FUNERAL HOME with Pastor John Wilson officiating, visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Improvement Fund at 1st Christian Church, 3682 Middle Urbana Rd., Springfield, OH 45503.

Of the Vance family in Ireland was David, my father's great-grandfather; who came to this country and married Sarah Colville. He resided in Loudoun Co., Va. He had two sons, David, my father's grandfather, and Joseph Colville, and three daughters, Ann, Mattis and Jane. David married Sarah Quimby. The fruits of this marriage were six sons-David, Daniel, Ephraim, John, Elisha and Elijah, and three daughters-Elizabeth, Sarah and Jane. My grandfather, whose name was John, married Sarah Perkins ; had three sons and one daughter. From the early history of Washington Co., Penn., among the early settlers there, were David and Joseph Colville Vance. From there they went to Barron Co., Ky.,

I «/u»have been researching my g-grandfather William Fletcher Vance b. 3 Aug 1845 and d. 25 Sep 1886 in Salem,Greenwood County, Kansas. His father was know to be Miles Vance, From Ohio.
The family story related by my mother, now deceased, was that Miles Vance was a circuit rider, probably Presbyterian, whose circuit was in the south. His wife (William Fletcher Vance's father ) (not sure how many) back to Ohio to live with relatives, and he returned to his duties as a circuit rider. He later remairried and moved to Texas and was never in contact with his son again.
Not much to go on. Through a search of census records, I have with some certainty, found William Fletcher Vance living with Isaac Cartlich a M.E. minister in Meigs County in 1850 and in Vinton County in 1860. No clear family relationship.
In searching census records I have found two "Miles W. Vances". One born in 1824, probably Hancock County, and I think the son of Wilson Vance b.1796 in Ky d.1862 in Hancock County. Based on census records, it looks like this Miles Vance lived his whole life in Hancock County.
The other Miles Vance is more elusive, with the earliest record that I could find being a marriage to Mary Jane Ferree in Jackson County, Ohio 1853. Census of 1870 places him in Arkansas, and 1880 census he is in Tarrant County Texas. Gravestone photo identifies his birthdate as 18 Aug 1818 and death on 8 Aug 1895. I noticed that a John C. Vance with a son named Miles, was recorded as a separate household, in both Arkansas and Tarrant County, TX. The 1850 census identifies a John C Vance, age 9, living with Robert and Serena Jamison in Hardin County. In 1860 they are in Champaign County.
On your website I found a marriage between Miles W. Vance and Mary Jane Jamison in 1839. The Miles Vance of Hancock County would have been too young, so this must be my g.g.grandfather.
Can you help me establish who the parents of my Miles Vance were. I suspect that his middle name is Wilson too. Looking at all the Vances and Wilsons in Champaign County, my best guess is that he is the oldest son of David Vance b.1783 in Penn, d. 1823 in Champaign County and Mary (Polly) Wilson. They were married in Mar 1817. Mary's father was Miles Thomas Wilson.
I have also reached a dead end with regard to the parents Mary Jane Jamison. I would guess that Robert G. Jamison was her brother. On your website there is a connection to William S. Jamison in his wll.
There is one other "soft" connection between "my" Miles W. Vance and David Vance. Mary Jane Vance b. 1819 died in Tarrant Couty TX.
Do you have any ideas of how I might solidify my speculation as to these relationships..
Forgive me for my rambling. If you can find any more useful information, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks
Willard B. (Bud) Ransom

still have only threads of information on Mary Jane Jamison who married Miles W Vance in 1839. I mentioned John C Vance, age 9, living with R G Jamison and Serena Jamison in Hardin Co in 1850. In 1860, Robert G. and Serena Jamison (but not John C Vance) were in Champaign Co. R G and Serena moved to Lawence Kansas in 1872 and Serena still lived in Lawrence Ks in 1905. Robert G d.1895 and is buried in Oakdale Cemetary , Urbana as is Mimerva Jamison 1831-1899.
Minerva shows up in the 1860 census in the household of William Ward Helmich and Sarah A (Jamison) Helmich b. 1819. Also in that household was a Mary A Vance b. 1843. ?sister of William Fletcher b. 1845 and John C Vance b.1840?
In the 1850 census Minerva Jameson shows living with W S (William S) Jameson in Urbana.
In your family relationships Sarah A Jamison's father is identified and Samuel Jamison d.1837.
It appears to me that Mary Jane, Sarah A, Robert G.,William S, and Minerva are all siblings and the children of Samuel Jamison.
The closest census record of a Samuel Jamison is in Lake, Logan Co, in1830.
I would appreciate your thoughts as to the validity of my presumtions/conclusions and if reasonable, where to go next in an attempt to confirm these thoughts.
In "The Jam«u»e«/u»sons in America, 1647-1900" , Ephraim Orcutt Jameson, {on Google Book Search}; page 507-508 Samuel Jameson, his wife and children are listed and correlates with the information that we already have.

On the 9th of November, 1790, John Ford was born, and on the 31st of
August , 1874, he departed this life, after lingering for seven months from the effects of a fall on the ice, which produced a compound fracture of one of his hips and the breaking of the upper end of a thigh bone. Mr. Ford manifested during his long, painful illness and great suffering, the most perfect composure and resignation, not a murmur was known to escape his lips during the whole time. Unlike most persons of his great age (nearly 84) his mind was always serene and in a happy frame, and ran out in gratitude and praise to his God and thankfulness for the unabated attentions of his friends during his illness. His whole mind seemed balanced and stayed to his last moments, when he fell asleep in death with his trust in his God and Savior, a most notable example to his surrounding friends. Mr. Ford settled near Urbana about 1819 and has remained in the vicinity ever since, leaving a name untarnished as a patrimony to his large and respected kindred. In all his intercourse with the world at large, none are found to question his uprightness and integrity. He was one of God's noblemen, summed up in three words,"AN HONEST MAN". W.P. - Urbana, 2 Sep.1874.
Note from Bill Lingrell
This stone is not listed in the tombstone inventory of any of the cemeteries in Champaign Co. The interment is not to be found in the official records of Oakdale Cemetery. and I have gone over them time and again. Yet here it is! Do you believe in serendipity? Better yet, do you believe, as I do, that an unseen hand guides us? What else would make me turn down a little used grassy lane that bisects a section of Oakdale Cemetery, when I am not looking for anything in particular? As I reached the end of that lane and was about to emerge on a paveddrive I looked ahead and saw - across the street and about 10 feet in from the edge of the pavement - a tall old stone bearing the legend "DORCAS". I knew - KNEW - that my eyes were deceiving me and that a close examination would reveal that it said something else. But it didn't! A close examination revealed the legend you see above. Is that eerie or what? I didn't have my camera with me, but it didn't take long to get it. Because of the time of day the light was exactly right for the best possible photo with just the right contrast to show the legend best.
I'm sorry, but I don't think John is there. There is no other Ford stone near her and I am sure he would have a stone. So we are still looking for him. Now I believe we will find him, if not in Oakdale, some place else. By the way, when I rechecked the tombstone inventory for Oakdale it showed only two Fords and did not include the "Memorial Stone" at all. So much for compiled records!

History of Clark Co, Ohio, Beers, 1881 Springfield, pg 947
Note from Mary Burgner:
I am sticking to my theory that Tolson is in fact the s/o James and Blanch due not only to the fact of his presence in the vicinity, but the fact that I've never found any conflicting evidence to the contrary. I have this included in my write-up on Tolson." It appears that Blanch was in fact Tolson's mother, his birth date ca 1785, he was not listed on Fleming Co., KY tax lists- 1798 thru 1806 as he was probably still living at home with his mother, Blanch. He was married. 29 Sep.1807 to Elizabeth Largent by John Pence, J.P.
@ Champaign Co., OH. and James LARGENT was appointed overseer of the road or of
that part of the road between Flemingsburg and Fleming Creek leading to the mouth of Flat Creek. As far as I am concerned, unless someone proves otherwise, I am going to leave my records intact with Tolson being a son of James and Blanch Ford - and feeling relatively good in doing so.
Allen Co, OH History
Tolson FORD settled in Auglaize Twp, in 1830. In the history of first industries and again in the history of his township the name is often referred to.
Among the witnesses to the sale of Francis Stevenson land in Champaign Co. were Tolson Ford, «u»David Ford,«/u» and John Stevenson.
Tolson was a Justice of the Peace and after going to Allen Co., OH when he moved there in 1834 he was one of the first trustees. He had purchased land from Piqua land office 24 April 1820, Sec. 22 in Allen Co. I have map showing who all lived nearby. Tolson m. Wealthy Gordon 25 March, 1845 in LOGAN CO., OH. Wealthy evidently went back to live in her father's home after Tolson d. 3 years later, and her age in the 1850 census was 39, making her b. ca. 1811, thus about makes her about 26 years younger than Tolson.
Tolson was a JP in Allen Co., Ohio, so I doubt very much that he would have moved to Logan Co., - YES, he and Wealthy were married there, however almost always the marriage license would be purchased in the Co. of residence of the bride, and usually the marriage took place there also - but then in the following Para. it mentions that: Tolson Ford and his wife (signed "Welthey C.Ford") sold their land in Allen Co. 24 Aug., 1847 to George Ford for $1000.- The deed was received for record July 31, 1848 and recorded on the first day of August following. Elisha McCoy signed as JP along with John B. Wamsley as recorder. Witnesses to the sale on Aug. 24 were Elisha McCoy and F.Rudy. Tolson probably went to Indiana with his son David - his will written in July, 1848 - Adams Co., IN - probated 3 Oct. 1848 -
It appears to me that Tolson and Wealthy probably left for Indiana at the time of the sale of their farm - 24 Aug., 1847, but George Ford did not present the deed to be recorded until July 31, 1848 and it was recorded on the first day of August following. (Back then deeds were often held after a sale for extended periods of time before being presented for record.)
Wanted to share this from documents that Randy Largent sent to me by way of showing me that the fa. of Elizabeth that m. Tolson Ford was James LARGENT and not Sargent. From County Court Book B 1800-1807. pg. 329. Fleming Co., KY. James LARGENT was appointed overseer of the road or of that part of the road between Flemingsburg and Fleming Creek leading to the mouth of Flat Creek in the room of Robert Evans who was discharged of his duty. This was on Monday, 1 July, 1805. There is absolutely no question but what this name is easily read as LARGENT. The problem comes when recorders in OH made their "L" almost identical to the "S" in various instances. Taken alone, the name looks for the world and all like James Sargent, and no doubt why the name was recorded thusly in publications years later. But taken as a whole from several documents that Randy has shared, one can see that the preponderance of evidence weighs for LARGENT. This shows us that it is vital to check original sources for verification of data, but also to try to verify from more than one source.
The next entry is what I also find of interest. This was on the motion of JOSEPH LYON ordered that WILLIAM LOWRY, GEORGE BISHOP, WILLIAM HARPER, AND JOHN SHOCKEY, were to view a way to turn the road through the land of the said Lyons and make report ...to the next court. These are all names familiar to me in my general search. Especially William Harper and John Shockey. ESPECIALLY John Shockey. We have several intermarriages for Shockey among Ward/Ford/Ashing in Champaign-Allen Co. OH.
Randy also shared the document that he told of earlier which mentions Tolson Ford. This from same order book and same date. "Ordered that Robert Bartley, Joseph Harrison, John Wier, James Miller, and Tolson Ford be allowed the sum of two shillings and one penny each for attending this court one day as witnesses for the commonwealth against Daniel Payne who was charged with felony.
So we see herein that our Tolson Ford was in same area in 1805 as his future father-in-law, in Fleming Co., KY.
What a challenge to read the script of the various documents. But do we do any better with our penmanship these days? No is the answer to that one. Randy has convinced me that Tolson Ford's wife was Elizabeth LARGENT, even though several publications list the name as SARGENT. I am changing my records to Largent

"Heirs and Legatees of Harford Co.,1802-1846,by Henry Peden.I found this on page 27.

(The spelling is exactly as it is in the book.)
William d. 1822 had a son John B. Foard/Ford who d. 1829 in MD. John B. had ch. James Henry, Francis, Ann, Hannah and Eliza, as noted in deed where Francis is in Harford Co. in 1833 and he is purchasing land that had been his mother's dower right. He is purchasing from James, Ann Walters (Ann m. William Walters in Harford Co. Oct. 2, 1817), Hannah, and Eliza all of CHAMPAIGN CO., OHIO! Since the deed (shared by Mary Burgner) states that Francis is purchasing their "FOUR TENTHS PART OF THEIR MOTHER'S DOWER RIGHTS", it would seem that John B., son of William d. 1822, must have had ten children. The five we have named, plus five more that were living elsewhere. Wonder if Francis bought their land too?
. "Ford's Chance. Maryland resurvey 1785 parts of the two above plats became plat 9, 129 acres surveyed for Joseph Ford (Foard). Patented to Isaac Ford April 17, 1833." I suggest that Joseph and Isaac were sons of William Ford who d. 1822. If this is the case, then these Fords were near neighbors to my very Gudgeon clan.

The will of William Clevenger Case 5774 named his heirs as wife Matilda of West Newton; George M. of West Minster and daughter Maria Cook of West Minster. All property to be distributed after Matilda's death. 40 Acres to Joseph, 50 acres to George, and 50 acres to Maria Cook.
The son George had no children and left his estate to his second wife, Alice; to his sisters and brother, and to brothers in law and nieces and nephew.
We think that Matilda is in the group of five sisters as the one standing on the left.
Matilda Ashing Clevenger and her husband William are buried in Salem Cemetery, Auglaize Twp., Allen Co., OH.
Tabitha Ashing Gregson 1842-1877, directly above, was the grandmother of Carolyn (Carrie) DeGraw who was born 1896 in Gregson Springs, Silverbow, Montana. You will see the photo of Carrie on the following page. The photo was taken in 1988. We met her in her own home in Caldwell, Idaho in 1992 when she was age 96. What an absolute jewel of a person, and a charming hostess. The photo of Tabitha is from a beautiful oil painting which Carrie had on the wall in her home.
Carrie's grandfather George Washington Gregson, after unsuccessful efforts at mining, discovered a wonderful hot spring that was reputed to have healing waters. The following article was obtained from the internet. The resort is still in operation as a prime vacation spot in 2008.
«u»«b»Hot Springs in Gold West Country: Fairmont Hot Springs«/u» «/b»Originally called medicine waters by area Native American tribes, these hot springs have been offering relaxing, rejuvenating waters near the Continental Divide in a hotel or resort setting since 1869. George and Eli Gregson purchased the land that is now Fairmont Hot Springs in 1869 from a man named Hulbert. The brothers build a small hotel and bathhouse, and the resort thrived during the early 1900's. In 1914, the two-story Gregson Hotel was destroyed by fire but construction soon began to replace the hotel. The resort continued to operate as Gregson Springs until 1971. In 1972 Lloyd Wilder purchased the property and invested over $5 million in the construction of the current resort and renamed it Fairmont Hot Springs Resort. Carrie had sought diligently to learn the parents of Thomas Ashing b. 1804. She had had correspondence from D. M. Stewart who had been trying to learn this very information for a cousin, Grace Bissey. Mr. Stewart had placed Thomas as a son of our James and Sarah Ford Ashing, but Carrie held tenaciously to her thinking that her great grandfather Thomas Ashing was son of a WILLIAM Ashing. I do not know why she thought that this was so other than the fact that there WAS a William Ashing in Champaign Co., OH who would have fit the profile in general. Some William Ashin (sic) is named along with households of our James Ashin (sic) and James' known son Samuel Ashin (sic) in Urbana Towship, Champaign Co., OH.
«u»1830 census Urbana Township, Champaign Co., OH:«/u»
. James was age 60-70 with two males in the home age 15-20; two females 10-15 and his wife age 50-60
. William and Samuel were both age 30-40.
In William's home were two males under 5; 1 male 5-10; 1 male 10-15; and himself. Females in William's home were only his wife age 30-40 and one daughter 5-10.
. Samuel, proved son of James and Sarah Jane Ford Ashing, had only one male under 5 and two females under five which would be correct for him.
Thomas, whom we are seeking, would have been age 26 in 1830 and does not appear to be in any of the above Ashing/Ashin homes. We DO have Thomas in the 1840 census however, in Urbana Twp., Champaign Co., OH with 2 males under 5 and himself age 30-40 plus 1 female under 5 and his wife, age 20-30. This home should have been that of Thomas and Eliza Ward Ashing and the children John, William, and Mary.
So we cannot locate Thomas in an 1830 census, but I am ready now to propose where both Thomas and presumed brother James might have been in Illinois in 1841.
EVIDENCE FOR ILLINOIS BIRTHPLACE OF TABITHA ASHING, DAUGHTER OF THOMAS AND ELIZA WARD ASHING. AT LAST!!!! CONCLUSIVE??? HOPE SO! And further, we hope we have found proof that the final son of James and Sarah Jane Ford Ashing, namely James Jr., would have been in Illinois «i»along with brother Thomas. «/i»
A son James is named for James and Sarah Ford Ashing in the "Reunion Book".
A son James is listed with the newspaper article telling of the five elderly sisters as on pg. 24 herein.
Brothers James and Thomas are listed on charts of both D.M. Stewart and Monica Williams-Mitchell.
Those are the only "proofs" that I have for James and Sarah Ashing having a son named James.
«u»The following research was done by Gail Martin, friend and cousin:«/u»
. James Ashing m. Nancy Printz 25 Nov., 1838, Champaign Co., OH and Thomas Ashing married Eliza Ward Nov. 10, 1835 same location.
. Located a James Ashing in Hancock Co., IL in 1840 census…… a household with head of household age 20-30 wife 15-20 and one female under 5. Remember that Thomas was still in OH census 1840.
. I found Illinois Tax Records 1842 for a Thomas Ashing & James Ashing (same location)
163 4n 5w Nauvoo, Illinois. Nauvoo is located in Hancock Co., Illinois.
. Marriage located Octavius Pawkett m. Nancy Ashing Date: 11/11/1847

. We are thinking that James died early in 1847, and Nancy Printz Ashing is the one in this census with her second husband and her children by James Ashing .
. So we are confronted with the need for proof that these men…….James and Thomas…….were in fact brothers as it appears they were, and next the need for proof that they were sons of our James and Sarah Jane Ford Ashing.
If this is our Thomas married first to Eliza Ward, Thomas had left Illinois and had gone to INDIANA by 1845 if he is the Thomas Ashing who married Sarah Townsend, then in 1847 married Catherine Cochran…. Both in IN.
What all family research shows is that Thomas and Eliza Ward's daughter Tabitha was born in ILLINOIS in 1842. We can only assume (that word again) that Eliza Ward died soon after Tabitha was born; Thomas was left with the four children including baby Tabitha; and with the need for a wife to care for his children, he went to the location in Indiana where his deceased wife's three sisters were living. That makes sense, but we need proof beyond the assumption. So at this point this portion of our ASHING story is conjecture based on probability. Good probability. And at this point I am going to leave it at that.
What we do know is that numerous modern day (2008) Ashing families claim that Thomas Ashing was, in fact, a son of James and Sarah Jane Ford Ashing. They have a great deal of information about the descendents of Thomas Ashing and his wife Catherine Cochran after the couple migrated to Poweshiek Co., IA about 1856. And in Iowa, Thomas And Catherine Cochran Ashing lived as near neighbors to Hannah Ward McVey………Hannah being the sister of Thomas's first wife Eliza Ward.
At this time I have not located a descendent of James and Nancy Printz/Prince Ashing.
. Same researcher has him b. 1801 Mason Co., KY.
. Birth date verified in cem. records for Hartshorn Cem. in Allen Co., OH
. He did marry Rachel Rees in Champ. Co. in 1832.
. Uriah, Rachel, and their ch. are named in 1850 census in Marion Twp., Allen Co., OH. Now Don Ford sends copy of the census page, and we see the following family units one after another: Uriah Ford, James Ford son of Joseph and Catherine Snell Ford; Nancy Clifton sis of James; Corydon Slygh and sp. Mary Clifton. Corydon probable bro of Mathias who was admin. of Joseph/Snell.

William, 26, OH
Christian, 17 OH
Joseph 15, OH
HH1255 Corden Slygh, 26, VS
Mary, 22, OH
. Uriah and Rachel are just two doors away from Joseph and Isabella Moore Ford in the 1860 census! Joseph was the son of Joseph and Catherine Snell Ford! Learning how Uriah can relate to "our" Fords might unravel the entire puzzle of how every line was connected. Uriah's ch. were named: Jacob, Mary, William, John D., MALINDA, and Elizabeth

M. NILE FORD. After some years of practical work in his profession as a pharmacist Mr. Ford was called to the office of secretary of the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy, with headquarters at Columbus. His many services in his official capacity have made him known among all members of the drug profession and business in the state. Mr. Ford was born on a farm near Delphos, in Marion Township, Allen County, Ohio, July 5, 1882. His parents were Edward J. and Lovina (Phillips) Ford. His great-grandfather, Joseph Ford, Sr., a native of
Maryland, was a pioneer settler in Ohio, locating in Champaign County. Edward J. Ford, son of Joseph Ford, Jr., was born December 19, 1853, in that county, and soon afterward the family moved to Marion Township of Allen County. Lovina Phillips is a daughter of Isaac and Polly (Crites) Phillips. Her grandfather, Daniel Phillips, came from Schuylkill County,
Pennsylvania, to Fairfield County, Ohio, and in 1855 the family moved to Marion Township, Allen County, Ohio. The home and environment of M. Nile Ford until he was twenty years
of age, in 1902, was his father's farm. In the meantime he had attended the township schools, had spent two years in Ohio Northern University at Ada, and he studied pharmacy in the Scio College of Pharmacy in Harrison County, a school conducted by Dr. J.H. Beal, for many years famous as a professor and teacher of pharmacy. While in pharmacy college Mr. Ford was captain of Company B of the college cadets, and at the end of his college course he was awarded first prize for the best workmanship in the pharmacy laboratory. Mr. Ford was graduated with the degree Graduate in Pharmacy from this college in 1906, and then returned to his home town of Delphos and was a pharmacist there until 1912. In that year he was appointed secretary of the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy. This is one of the independent departments of the state government, reporting directly to the governor. In the past ten years the board has done a great deal of important work in raising the standard of requirements for entrance into the profession of pharmacy, and at the present time these
requirements are higher than those found in any other state. While the influence of the board has thus acted as a bar to incompetent membership, it has also safeguarded the welfare of the profession and practice of pharmacy by furthering all legitimate legislation affecting the business. Mr. Ford is associated with all state and national organizations affecting
pharmacy. Mr. Ford married Miss Goldy May Friedline of Delphos, on April 30, 1913. He had the misfortune to lose his wife by death on March 3, 1920. She is survived by a son and daughter, Robert Edwin, born September 6, 1915, and Mary Ellen, born February 2, 1920. Mr. Ford is a Knight Templar and thirty-second degree Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner, a Knight of Pythias and a member of the Methodist Church.
I do not know par. of Rachel Reese, but I do have info on other Rees/e families. One notable one is Nathan Reese s/o Jacob and Hannah Kirk Reese, who m. Abigail WARD, da. of Abijah Sr. Abijah in Champ. Co. same time as all these we are speaking of, but he d. 1816. I often think that my lost Edward/John Ward will relate somehow to the line of Abijah Ward. One of Abijah's desc. raised one of my ASHING children, for one thing.

Mr. Joseph McGlynn has kindly shared considerable information with me concerning a FORD line that originated in England in ca. 1620 with Andrew Ford who d. in Hingham, Massachusetts in 1693. Andrew m. Ellinor Lovel. I have a connection to this couple when their line finally gets to Sarah Ford that m. Barbabas PACKARD. This is my own direct Packard line. But as far as whether there could be any connection of any of the desc. of this Andrew Ford and my unclaimed James Ford that m. Blanche West, I have no idea.
There are some interesting items brought out in the material that makes me believe, however, that there was probably a relationship to one of the Ford lines that did go to Champaign Co., OH early. Some of you received my OSBORN/FORD Study. I share a portion of it here:
We note that two sons of Francis Ford married Kincaid women, who were sisters according to informant. Kincaid becomes important to this discussion because of land sales. This time according to deed book 15 page 351 of Greenbrier Co. VA deeds that was notarized 15 Nov., 1839 in Champaign Co., OH we have the following: "I, Mary Foard of County of Champaign state of Ohio for the sum of $75 paid by John«u» CONNER«/u» assinee John Caraway of county and state aforesaid have bargained and sold to said John «u»CONNER«/u» of Virginia to wit: 1/10 of the tract of land situated on waters of Sinking creek-said which James Kincaid late of Virginia died seased of with the same proportion of personal property if any and the said Mary Foard as one of the heirs and legal representatives of the estate of said James Kincaid. 8 Oct., 1840."
There is a second deed where the same Mary Foard is deeding to John «u»Caraway«/u», land in Greenbrier Co. VA which she had an interest in as heir of James Kincaid, deceased. (Know of no connection, but there was a m. of a John Caraway to a Jemimah OSBORN in Clark Co., OH in 1819. Believe it or not, this will eventually become an OSBORN study.)
The person deeding to John Conner (our Blanche West Ford's sister m. a Conner in Harford Co. MD) and John Caraway was Mary Ford on the above chart....wife of George.
Another deed is between Charles and Nancy Ford and others of Cedar Co. IA where they are selling to Samuel McClurg of Greenbrier Co. VA. "in consideration of $1 to them in hand paid". The land in question here is the same tract "conveyed to William N. Kincaid by the heirs at law of Washington McClung, decd. and by said William Kincaid and Sarah his wife conveyed to the said Nancy Ford, Sarah Fulwider and Harriett Fulwider, as heirs of James Kincaid, decd by deed bearing date 24 June 1839."
We note on the following chart the m. of David Osborn to Mary HARRAH. I do not have the par. of Mary, but a Robert HARRAH m. Elizabeth BALDWIN and their son David Osborn Harrah m. Rebecca WARD, a distant relative of Col. Wm. Ward who laid out Urbana, OH in 1805. I believe it was this Robert Harrah that was a wit. to the will of John Osborn, 1806, GREENBRIER CO., VA. We also note on this Osborn chart the marriage of Samuel Osborn to Hulda KINCAID.
«u»Now back to the information shared by Joseph McGlynn.«/u»
. Elizabeth Baldwin Harrah's sister Sarah m. a Richard COLLINS and their da. Frances m. Geo. Wash. KINCAID.
Elizabeth and Sarah's sister Joanna Baldwin m. George KINCAID, and they had a son SAMUEL Baldwin Kincaid. I wonder if this Samuel Baldwin Kincaid could have been the Samuel Kincaid married to Huldah OSBORN on the Jacob Osborn chart, above.
. A clue??? Samuel Ford b. NJ ca. 1735 was in line of the immigrant Andrew Ford. Samuel Ford's mo. was Sarah BALDWIN. Through circumstances, Samuel Ford took his mother's maiden name, and became known in VA as Samuel Baldwin. One item of particular interest, named in the will of Samuel (Ford) Baldwin in 1789 in Botetourt Co., VA he wills: "that a son of the late Robert CALDWELL deceased shall have one hundred acres of land in GREENBRIER CO. with a sufficiency of tillable lands on the same, to get his living on......." (The boy's name, according to Mr. McGlynn, was Samuel FORD.) Isn't it interesting that he named this child Samuel FORD. Mr. McGlynn suggests that Samuel Sr. may have had this child by Mr. Caldwell's wife.
«u».....................................«/u»
Well, as always......interesting stuff with possibilities for helping us figure out the early Fords of Champaign Co., OH, but at the moment it was just an exercise in futility unless I am missing something. Sure in interesting that I DO connect to the line of this early Andrew Ford via my PACKARD line, but again, at this time I cannot see my James Ford m. to Blanche West in this study. Thank you, Joe, for sharing. Anita
Following is shared by Cathy Driscoll. Address in fbs book for internet.
Once I send you the copies of the letter you can do whatever you want with them but the original letter is actually the property of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. This Francis is Francis Jr. from Greenbrier County who married Nancy Wall. From a researcher descended from his son Charles:
«i»Cathy: Here is what I have; About the year 1675, two brothers emigrated from Ireland. They were said to be Scotch-Irish (Celtic) and landed at or near Jamestown in the Crown Colony of England now old Virginia. My earliest ancestor was Francis Ford who was married to Nancy Ann Wall and they had 8 children all of who were born in Greenbriar County, VA. Charles Ford, son of Francis and Nancy, was born 3 August 1797 and married Nancy Kincaid on the 16th of July 1816 in Greenbriar County, VA. which is now in West VA. They had 7 children, Allan, born 1816, VA. James D. born 1820, VA. Alexander, born 1821, VA. Samuel B., born 1824, VA. Franklin, born 1826, VA. Rolla, born Ohio and William born 1835, Ohio. Charles and Nancy moved to Center Township, Cedar County, Iowa with their family along with his brothers, James and Andrew, about 1844 (Source: Ford descendants).Charles and Nancy left VA in about the 1835 along with two families of Fulwiders (Nancy's sisters Harriet and Sarah married Fulwiders) The families all settled in Ohio where they were not content and moved then to Jamesport MO., then on to IA. where they lived and died. My Ford's were mostly in Greenbriar County. Nancy«/i»
Mrs. Rebecca Pangle This venerable lady and pioneer of Allen County, whose maiden name was Longacre, was born in Frederick County, Virginia on 14 Dec.1781. Vance Pangle to whom she was married 14 Aug.1799 was also a native of Virginia. He was born Jan.1774. They were married in the State where they were born, and moved from there to Lancaster, Ohio about fifty years ago. A year afterwards they moved to urbana, where they remained about three years and then came to this county, locating in Sugar Creek township. Here they lived till Mr. Pangle's death, which occurred15 Sep.1835, since which time Mrs. Pangle has lived with her son Elisha, who occupied the old homestead for nine years, then moved to Delphos, where he remained fourteen years; after which he moved to the home they now occupy. It has been the custom of Mr. Pangle for several years to celebrate his mother's birthday by giving an entertainment at his residence, to which the family and friends generally are invited. As the old lady's family now embraces children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, these gatherings are large, and are greatly enjoyed by all who attend - her son Elisha and his wife sparing no pains to make these events full of pleasure and enjoyment. It is not often we are priviledged to meet one who has traveled along the road of life for nearly a hundred years, and yet today Mrs. Pangle walks erect, makes her own bed, enjoys good health generally, and is likely to live to celebrate her centennial. Her mind is still quite vigorous, and her recollections of incidents of pioneer life in the woods of Allen County are vivid and clear. May her remaining days be full of peace, and when the final summons shall come may "Angels spread their joyful wings, And bear her soul away."

The Bio is in a History of Allen County, Ohio but I don't have the actual Title or unfortunately the page #. Our State Library has a copy of the book and if I ever get back there I will try to remember to get that info.
For now the transcription goes like this.
"Madison T. Bowyer was born in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, in 1813, and came from Logan County (Ohio) to this county (Allen) with his parents, James and Margaret, in 1835. He married Rachel, daughter of Daniel and Rachel Sargent, whose children are, Elbert, Rhoda, Jackson, Susan, Rachel, Amos, Nathan, Harvey, Nesbit, Susan, Charlotte, and Cora. Mrs. Bowyer was born in Champaign County in 1818. Her parents never lived in this county. Madison T. and Rachel Bowyer have four children-Henry H., Susan S., Alfred E., and Cynthia A. Susan was married to Joseph McCoy, and Cynthia to Nathan Crubb. They both live in this county. Henry live in this county."
Polly Kincaid sister of Nancy Kincaid - w/o Charles Ford
KINCAID. We note that two sons of Francis Ford married Kincaid women, who were sisters according to informant. Kincaid becomes important to this discussion because of land sales. This time according to deed book 15 page 351 of Greenbrier Co. VA deeds that was notarized 15 Nov., 1839 in Champaign Co., OH we have the following: "I, Mary Foard of County of Champaign state of Ohio for the sum of $75 paid by John CONNER assinee John Caraway of county and state aforesaid have bargained and sold to said John CONNER of Virginia to wit: 1/10 of the tract of land situated on waters of Sinking creek-said which James Kincaid late of Virginia died seased of with the same proportion of personal property if any and the said Mary Foard as one of the heirs and legal representatives of the estate of said James Kincaid. 8 Oct., 1840."
There is a second deed where the same Mary Foard is deeding to John Caraway, land in Greenbrier Co. VA which she had an interest in as heir of James Kincaid, deceased.

The grave next to his is that of Uriah Ford grave 23
Uriah's son John was born in 1844, but died in 1921 and is buried in Row 9 grave 21.
The death records for Ohio were searched to no avail for this 1915 death date and was not able to locate indicating he may have died out of state.
Further research needed. He has never, not once been located in any census records.
Burial record-surname spelled Nickles
Ohio Death Cert-surname spelled Nickels

Ohio Death cert for Archie surname is spelled Nichels, however this is a typo if you look at the complete record and open it wide you can see a K"

His father was a native of Berkeley County, Va. He enlisted in the Revolutionary war when fifteen years old, with four brothers-Benjamin, Stephen, Lewis and Wallace-and served till the close of that memorable war. He was at Valley Forge and Brandywine, the latter place where Wallace was killed. After the Revolution, Benjamin, Stephen and Lewis removed to Massachusetts. Thomas settled in Fayette County, Ky., and in 1812 removed to Clark County, Ohio, where he died in January 1813, and Mrs. Herd the following year, leaving eight children, six of whom are now living-John; Mary, widow of Samuel Sparks; Lewis; Ann, wife of Levi Harkadine; Elizabeth, wife of Edward Robbing; and Thomas, the subject of this sketch. James and William are deceased. James was a private in the war of 1812.
Thomas, the subject of this notice, was reared on a farm till he was fourteen years of age, when he began and served an apprenticeship at tanning in Urbana. He worked at journey work a few months, then went to Chillicothe, thence to Marion, where he worked for Associate Judge James, subsequently a member of the Ohio Legislature. In 1818, Mr. Herd came to the county and remained till 1826. In 1833, he came to Liberty Township, and after working one year on the White farm, bought 100 acres, which was all in woods except four acres. He cleared a site, and erected a house the same year. Mr. Herd is one of the industrious, hard-toiling men of the county, and his labors have been abundantly rewarded. He entered the stage of life an orphan boy, but by energy and perseverance he accumulated 672 acres of land, most of which he cleared and improved himself. He made a division among his children, and now owns but 400 acres. October 11, 1835, he was married to Miss Lydia, daughter of James and Sarah S. Darrow, and a native of Clinton County, N. Y., where she wag born December 11, 1807. Four sons and one daughter were born to them, viz., Olive C., born November 19, 1836, wife of John Reed; James D., born May 14, 1840; Hiram D., born October 11, 1842, married Minerva Glasscock; William H., born February 11, 1845, married Phebe A. Benton; and John Q., born May 4, 1849, and married Dora Barlow. Mr.. Herd has always followed agriculture and rearing Spanish merino sheep, Durham cattle, French horses, and Poland - China hogs. In fine stock pursuits he has achieved a marked success. James D. Herd, the eldest son, was reared on the farm, and educated in the public schools of Marysville and Urbana. In 1871, he was elected Justice of the Peace, and has since filled that office. September 23, 1877, he was appointed a member of the Board of Examiners of the county, and still retains the position. He has been a teacher since 1859. John Q. Herd, the youngest son, was born and reared on the old homestead. He was educated in the common schools, and the Ohio Wesleyan University, of Delaware.
