The charred remains of Mrs. Mary E. Nemsgern, 80, who was burned to death while lying on her bed in her residence on Eat First Street at 6 o'clock last evening, April 7, 1931 will be laid to rest in Berlin Cemetery, Berlin, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma, Thursday afternoon.
the old lady was found enveloped in flames by her granddaughter. Miss Edith Newsgern, shortly after 6 p.m., yesterday. The girl screamed for assistance and Mrs. L.A. Stanford and E.J. Barr rushed to the scene.
When Mr. Barr succeeded in putting out the flames the bed clothing had
burned off the bed and Mrs. Nemsgern was lifeless. A physician called to
administer aid said when he arrived that she had been dead several minuts. Mrs. Lena musfelt, daughter, with whom Mrs. Nemsgern lived, had left the house only a few minutes before the granddaughter saw the flaming bed and ran screaming from the house. Mrs. Musfelt seldom left her mother alone but had gone to vote thinking that the granddaughter would be there any minute. Making sure that all fires were out and that there was no other apparnet danger which might befall the elderly woman Mrs. Musfelt lfet. She believes that probably her mother got a match off the top of a gas range and unknowingly struck it, setting her clothing afire. Mrs. Nesgern suffered a paralytic stroke about a year ago and had not been in her right mind since, neighbors said. She did not recognize anyone except her daughter, Mrs. Musfelt.
Mrs. Nemsgern came to this county 35 years ago settling with her husband on land northwest of Berlin. They moved to Elk City seven years ago. Mr. Nemsgern died tow years ago.Born in Springfield, Ohio in 1851 Mrs Nemsgern first moved with her family to Kentucky. Later the moved to Kansas and rrom there to Berlin, in the west part of the county.
Surviving Mrs. Nemsgern are her daughter here, Mrs. Musfelt, and two sons and another daughter. The sons are John Nemsgern, of Wichita, Kan., and Nick Nemsgern, of West Plains, MO. The other daughtger, Mrs. Emma Wilson, also lives at West Plains. Services will be held at the Killough-Jullum funeral home here with Rev. J.L. Beers History 1881 A. C. JENNINGS, farmer and stock-raiser; P. O. Urbana. Among the promine nt and distinguished farmers of Champaign Co., we mention the na me of A. C. Jennings, who was born in Clark Co., Ohio, in February, 181 5. There he enjoyed the usual common-school advantages until the a ge of 15 years, at which time he engaged in the harness trade, which he fo llowed until 1844. In the meantime he carried on business for himself in M arysville, Ohio. At this time he went to New York City, where he was in t he employ of J. L. Cochran for a period of two years, then associated wi th T. B. Read, forming the firm of Jennings, Read & Co., carrying a wholes ale stock of hats, caps, straw and fancy millinery goods. This they, condu cted successfully several years, but A. C. becoming tired of business, ret ired in 1859, and returned to Champaign Co., locating on his farm, whi ch he had three years previously purchased. He brought with him a numb er of fine horses to put on the farm, which he superintends, and it sti ll receives his daily attention, though not residing on it. It is locat ed in Salem Township, adjoining the incorporated city of Urbana, and kno wn as the " Nutwood Farm," which is one of the finest farm in the count y. This farm, through the taste and enterprise of the proprietor, is unusu ally well improved, the architecture of his barn being unequaled in the hi story of the State. Its dimensions are 100 feet in diameter, and the immen se circular brick walls stand twenty-four feet high, and fifty-one feet hi gher is a large circular observatory, which is reached by a circular or wi nding stairway from the base to the top, where a grand view is afforded. T his was erected in 1861 and 1862, at a cost of nearly $23,000, an d, as he dealt in fine and fast horses, he had an excellent place to ke ep them, though now he has but few fine horses, but handles fine cattle. F or ten years he had a full mile track on his farm, which was in first-cla ss condition. His farm consists of 450 acres, which, in quality and improv ements, is far superior to any in the vicinity or State. From the year 18 74 to 1877, he conducted a dry goods trade in Springfield, Ohio, though re siding on his farm, since which he has not resided on the farm, and fre ed from all business cares except those of his stock and farm. His nuptia ls were celebrated in 1839, with Miss Julia A. McNay, of West Liberty, Log an Co., Ohio, born in 1819. She is a daughter of John and Aroda McNay

WARD, MAY ALDEN, author and lecturer, daughter of Prince William and Rebecca (Neal) Alden, was born at Milford Centre, near Columbus, Ohio, March 1, 1853, and died January 14, 1918. Her father was descended from John Alden and Priscilla Mullins, through Captain Jonathan, Andrew, Major Prince, to Andrew Stanford Alden, Mrs. Ward's grandfather. Captain Jonathan Alden married Abigail, daughter of Andrew Hallet, Jr. Andrew Alden, their eldest son, married Lydia Stanford. Major Prince Alden married Mary Fitch, daughter of Adonijah Fitch of Montville, Connecticut, who was a grandson of Reverend James Fitch of Saybrook and Norwich, Connecticut, and his second wife, Priscilla Mason, daughter of [p.309] Major John Mason, famous military leader of the Connecticut Colony. A year or two before the beginning of the Revolutionary War, Major Prince Alden and his family removed from Connecticut to Wyoming County, Pennsylvania, where he became a prominent landowner. In 1816 Andrew Stanford Alden, with his wife, Elizabeth Allington and their children, removed from Tioga County, New York, to Ohio. Mrs. Ward's father, Prince William Alden, a merchant and banker (born February 11, 1808; died February 27, 1893), married, in 1844, Rebecca, daughter of Henry Neal of Mechanicsburg, Ohio, and his wife, Catherine, daughter of Isaac Bigelow, of Dummerston, Vermont, and a descendant of John Biglo of Watertown, founder of the Bigelow family of New England. Mrs. Rebecca Neal Alden was born March 11, 1823, and died April 12, 1898. Mr. and Mrs. Alden were the parents of two sons: Henry, who died in childhood; and Reuben, who was killed in the Civil War at the age of sixteen.

[HI71896] (Research):In the probate records of Mercer Co, Center, OH, where Samuel Lived is a d eath record for a John Flowers. He died 6/12/1874, was married aged 69y9m1 d. Born VA (Book 1 Pg 32) It would seem he should be related in some w ay to Samuel, but have not been able to prove the connection. It is possib le it is a half brother, a son of his father James' first marriage.

The John Flowers I found in Butler Co, OH was born in 1824, but this da te of birth obstructed the birth sequence of siblings suggesting he may ha ve the the SON John of the other John. So I began looking at daughter Ma rtha who was born by the first unknown wife of James who married Jesse Wh itney in Butler Co OH and settled in Hancock Co. OH. It would only make s ince that brother and sister moved to hancock County, John being born arou nd 1804 and Martha around 1806. One ancestry file has this John from Mer cer County records and the son of Samuel by a first wife. But I have n ot been able to find this guy John Flowers b 1804 in any census. I find o ne 1850-1870 in Pike Co OH which could be him and maybe when he got sic k, went to stay with his father in Mercer Co, OH and died there.

[HI72366] (Research):Solomon YOCOM b 09 April 1771 Hampshire County, VA d 20 Aug 1855 Champaign County, OH
Solomon YOCUM moved from Virginia to Kentucky in 1802. In Kentucky he lived near Mt. Sterling, Montgomery Co. In 1820 the family moved to Ohio and located near Urbana in Champaign County. Their first home was two miles east of Granite Hill. His biography in the History of Champaign County, Ohio says that he was the first of that name (Solomon) in the U.S. Thus he is the oldest of the Solomon Yocum's presently being considered.

Solomon cleared Sulphur Springs and built a log cabin. Because of the prevalence of malaria near Sulphur Springs, the family removed to Urbana (OH) and bought land near George's Chapel.

Solomon YOCUM died in 1855 while living with his son, John Wesley YOCUM. He was a harnessmaker and saddlemaker by trade and a local Methodist preacher. He often preached to the Indians with Sol HINKLE. E-mail: jsickles149178MI@comcast.net

The Diltz Chapel Methodist Church, located in Union Twp was organized in 1838 by Wesley Diltz, Wesley Yocum, Amosa Jackson and Sarah Bidwell, at the home of Wesley Diltz. The need of a house of worship was urgent and shortly a long structure, twenty-six feet long and twenty-two feet wide was erected. Services were held there for nearly twenty years. At the expiration of this period, a modern frame building was built and was dedicated by Rev J T Bail. This society gradually became absorbed by neighboring churches, but many of the descendants of the original members are residents of the community today.

HENRY P. GROVER, Mount Sterling, Illinois, one of the oldest settlers of t he County, was born in Mason County, Kentucky. His father, JOSEPH, came fr om Virginia, and the grandfather, JONATHAN, spent his last years in Lew is County, Kentucky. JOSEPH was a farmer in Mason County, where he spent t he last years of his life. His wife was named SARAH PUTNAM. She was the da ughter of ELIZABETH and HENRY PUTNAM, who came from Kentucky to Illino is in 1836, and she spent her last years in Brown County.

HENRY was ten years old when his father died, and when he was sixteen yea rs old his mother and her family moved to Ohio, and settled in Champaign C ounty, where they were pioneers. They lived there until 1836, when HENRY c oncluded to go West and try to better his fortune in a new country; conseq uently he came by teams as did other emigrants, and after eighteen da ys of travel landed in that part of Schuyler now included in Brown Count y. His means were very limited, and therefore, although there was plen ty of Government land to be had for $1.25 an acre, he was not able to secu re any for a time. He rented for two years, and then entered a Governme nt tract, near Mount Sterling Township. It was timber land, and he built t he usual log hut, and existed for a long time upon the game that at that t ime was very plentiful. It was many years before there was any railroad th rough that section. He made frequent trips to Quincy, forty miles dista nt with wheat. Those were days of privations, but are now looked back up on as being very happy ones.

His first wife was very industrious, was able to card, spin and weave a nd dressed her entire family in homespun, made entirely by her own hand s. MR. GROVER cleared the land and built a brick house and lived there unt il 1882, and traded with his son JAMES for the farm he now owns and occupi es.

He married first in 1833, LUCINDA PUTNAM of Champaign County, Ohio, a daug hter of WILLIAM and MARY PUTNAM. She died about 1860. His second wife w as named MARTHA PUTNAM. He has seven children, who were all born by his fi rst marriage, and are named: ERWIN, CAROLINE, JOHN G., MARION, JAMES, JOSE PH and ANGELINE. MR. GROVER is a member of the Regular Primitive Baptist C hurch, and is a Democrat in politics. He has served two terms as a memb er of County Board of Supervisors. ---------- Source: Original data: Biographical review of Cass, Schuyler and Brown Cou nties, Illinois : containing biographical sketches of pioneers and leadi ng citizens..
