[HI62806] (Research):Today is an important one socially, there being a large afternoon recepti on given by Mrs. W. R. Ross and Mrs. Lydia Ross at the latter’s home. Champ Co Ross & Brand Family Scrapbook pg 76 (c1911)

FRIDAY MORNING, DEMEMBER 29, 1911
Mrs. W. R. Ross and Mrs. Lydia Ross entertained a company of t heir friends Thursday afternoon with one of the most enjoyable receptio ns ever given in Urbana. There were two hours for the party, which was he ld at the home of the younger Mrs. Ross, and the ladies were coming and go ing all afternoon, and very much regretting that they must depart, so gre at was their pleasure. The home had been prepared for the company with ho liday decorations of green and red, and candle light was used in all the r ooms.
The Mesdames Ross after greeting their guests invited th em to the music room, where they met Miss Anna Allison Jones, of Chicag o. Miss Jones is a former Zanesville girl was a singer of remarkable tale nt, who has won recognition for herself in Chicago, and contemplates goi ng to New York in the near future. She now has a studio in Chicago, and d evotes most of her time to concert work, although she has a number of pupi ls. Miss Jones is the soloist at the Jewish Synagogue at Chicago, singi ng there Friday evening and Saturday morning of each week., and has simil ar engagements at the large Congregationalist church for Sunday morning a nd evening.
Surely Urbana women were fortunate in hearing such a singer a nd they expressed their pleasure by work and action. The musicale was inf ormal, the guests standing and Miss Jones singing several times, and bei ng given an opportunity to meet the Urbana ladies between the numbers. The program was varied, beginning with a German Song, “Das Krau Vergessenh elt” (Hildach), which was a good introduction for the singer’s lovely cont ralto voice. Miss Jones’ voice is one in a thousand, very low pitched, b ut rich and rare. She does not attempt to take the high notes, but as gre at volume and tones that are bell-like, clear and strong. She sang a “Spl endid Rose” song for her second number, “A Memory” (Edna Rosalind Park), a nd her singing of it will be a “memory.” The “Boat Song,” by Harriet War e, (words by Montrose J. Moses), was bright, vivacious, summery. “From t he Land of the Sky Blue Water” (Charles Wakefield Cadman), with words by N elle Richmond Eberhart, was exquisitely beautiful, and “A Disappointment ,” by Helen Hood was another.
The child’s song, “If I Were a Little Child Again,” (Clayton T homas) was “just dear,” and Miss Jones’ expression added to her singi ng of this number even more than the others, although her personality h ad much to do with her success. “I Hid My Love” (Guy D’Hardelot), and “ No Candle Was There, and No Fire” (Breton fold song), by Liza Lehmann, we re two numbers heard by the first company and omitted in the second progra m.
Mrs. Joe N. Hitt was at the piano, and her skillful accompanim ent was a great assistance to the singer.
Following the musicale a dozen of the good friends and relativ es of the hostesses served a salad course to the guests, as they enjoy ed an informal mingling and conversation. (Handwritten: Bess Brand)

[HI63101] (Research):Champaign Co, Ohio Early Settlers Vol 2 pg 149 Leaving the crossroad at McConkey Road and Broadguage and going east, on t he north side of the road William Hunter owned most of the land to Plesa nt Chapel. ON the south side of Broadguage owned by the McClintock familyu ntil 1845. Next on thew east side of the McClintocks was the old Ellswor th farm. A farm which remained in the Ellsworth family from early settleme nt to about 1885. I am not too sure about cataloging the Ellsworths b ut I think the first one here was either Jacob or Joseph Ellsworth. An o ld map of Pleasant Twp shows Joseph Ellsworth as owner around 1860 or 187 0. The earliest I can remeber Pearl Ellsworth lived here and he was the la st of the Ellsworth name to own the place. Historical records show the Ell sworths married in the Curl, McConkey, Lofland and Runyan families. One re cord states Sarah Runayn born about 1820 married Jacob Ellsowrth who was t he son of the Rev Soldier, Jacob Ellsworth. This indicates Jacob Ellswor th the soldier was the original owner of the farm. Beers history fai ls to even mention the Ellsworths.

Champaign Co, Ohio Early Settlers Vol 1 pg 46 NW Goshen Twp North of this survey (6021) is 6240 reaching almost to the township lin e. Tatum Coffey and Joseph Ellsowrth were the pioneers in this survey. Cof fey got 255 acres all of which is still in the family and Joseph Ellswor th had 100 acres of which was in survey 7311.

[HI63365] (Research):Margaret and Carrie lived with Margaret’s parents: William and Rebecca V an Horn (spelled Vanhorn in 1870) in 1870. Carrie is listed as Isadora a nd the Census implies that she was using the name Vanhorn. By 1880, Margar et has married Andrew Cruzen and is living in Silver Creek Township, Gree ne County, Ohio. Margaret Cruzen was living with their son William but n ot with her husband, Andrew. I do not know why Andrew is not in the househ old except that I know that he was an alcoholic and their marriage w as in constant trouble – perhaps Andrew was not living with Margaret at th at time. Carrie is not living with Margaret in 1880 and I suspect that she is the o rphanage at that time. Later, Carrie will become a teacher at the orphana ge and it is at that point that she met Frank (Francis Marion) Earley.

In 1900, Carrie and Frank were were living in Dayton, Montgomery County, O hio with their three eldest children: Grace, LeRoy (always known as Roy ), and Nellie (my grandmother – who hated the name Nellie and insisted up on being called Nel). Yes, the 1900 Census indicated that she was bo rn in 1867.

By the 1900 Census, Margaret and Andrew Cruzen are living together in Mika do, Alcona County, Michigan.

The Graham dwelling house that burned down a week since in Johnson township, and which came near being disastrous to the family, will be remembered as an old-fashioned country house one-half mile east of Lena, on the Piqua and Urbana pike, and has been occupied by the Graham family for more than half a century. It was the home of the late Rev. Samuel Neer during the first year of his itinerancy in the Cincinnati Conference, Fletcher circuit.

[HI63506] (Research):Early Settlers of Champaign County Ohio pg54 Perhaps there are many pioneer families who have left numerous descendan ts who are present day citizens of your county, but one in particular, who se descendants probably number in the hundreds, is th e Neer family who ca me from Louden County Virginia prior to 1820. The marriage records in the probate judge's office list one hundred and th irty-two men with the surname Neer who have secured marriage licenses. Th ere can be assumed that an equal number of women of that name were also pa rties in making application for licenses. In our neighboring county of Clark, there are just about as many Neers w ho secured licenses there. Therefore the descendants of the Neer famili es must be legion. All of these people can trace their ancestry back to a Conrad Neer and h is wife Nancy, who came from the Lower Rhine river section of Europe somet ime about 1740. After coming to American they settled in a German settlem ent in Louden county, Virginia and following the custom of most Germans, t hey produced a whooping large family of children, soon becoming so numero us that the village of Neersville, Virginia was named for them. From this family, five men, two of whom were brothers, and three nephews a ll of whom with one exception were married in Virginia and themselves h ad children, all migrated to Ohio country in the early eighteen hundreds. They settled part of Pleasant township, Clark county and the others in Uni on, Goshen and Concord townships of Champaign county. Two brothers, Phil ip and Henry Neer were well past middle age. The nephews Samuel, James a nd Joseph were younger and came about 1830. Philip and Henry had fourte en children all of whom were full grown men and women. The five older men, first mentioned, were the parents of thirty-five child ren, all of whom for a time lived in this community, later a few, possib ly a half dozen migrated farther westward, the rest of them, all pionee r, remained in Champaign and Clark counties and lived out their entire liv es. As an example of how descendants can populate a conununity all ow me to use one grandson of Philip. He was born in 1809, married and set tled in Pleasant township, a couple of miles from the Champaign county lin e. To him and his wife eight children born, they are now all deceased. T he last one died in 1929, but from his eight children there are more th an one hundred living descendants with at least two-thirds of them livi ng in the two counties before mentioned. They are about equally divid ed in each county. If there is any difference I think Champaign has the m ost. Now multiply that by the other 34 children and you can get some id ea of how many people can trace their lineage back to the Neer pioneers w ho came from Virginia. Henry Neer and his nine children settled in Clark county close to the Cham paign county line. Two of the children eventually bought farms in Champai gn county in Union township. However the majority of Henry's descendan ts are in the neighboring county, Philip Neer who had five children also l ived in Pleasant township. Philip's grandchildren liked Champaign best, f or several of them crossed the line. One grandson in particular, George N eer, did his part by siring fourteen children who all lived around Mutua l. Many of lfis descendants are now in Urbana. Two other sons of Phili p, Jacob and Conrad Jr. have numerous descendants in and around Urbana a nd Mechanicsburg. The other Neers, Samuel, Joseph and James, all three located in Concord to wnship and did their part by producing twenty-one children, thus liberal ly populating the west side of the county. Several of Joseph's children went west however. A few from this bran ch of the Neers have found their way to Urbana. Ihave used this family to show how this and scores of other similar Americ an families pioneered the settlement of this county. The Neer family w as truly an average family, very comparable to dozens of theirs. Its memb ers have followed almost every occupation known to Champaign County.

[HI63511] (Research):NATHAN NEER, farmer; P. O. Catawba. The above-named gentleman was bo rn in Pleasant Township, close to the present sent site of Catawba, Aug. 1 5, 1822. He is the son of Amos and Sarah (Cunard) Neer, natives of Loudo un Co., Va. He was born March 3, 1787, and she June 9, 1794. Amos was t he son of Henry Neer, who was born in Virginia in 1748, and came to Cla rk Co. at an early day, locating land where Catawba now stands. He died Fe b. 3, 1828. Amos and wife came to this township in 1817, and first settl ed on the land entered by his father, but about 1825 he bought a small tra ct, where his son Nathan now lives, adding to it from time to time, unt il he owned 160 acres. They were members of the M. E. Church. He was a sol dier of the war of 1812, and died April 25, 1843, aged 56 years. His fir st wife died Feb. 25, 1828, in her 33d year. They had seven children-Jonat han, Elizabeth, Ann,. Susannah, Jane, Nathan and Matilda. After the dea th of his first wife he married Mrs. Hannah Golden, who was born Jan. 3 0, 1799, by whom he had three children - Joseph H., Amelia (deceased) a nd Hannah (deceased). His second wife died April 1, 1835, and he was aga in married to Nancy Toland, born May 18; 1791, by whom he had no issue. T he subject of this sketch grew up in the pioneer days, receiving the avera ge education at the time, and enduring all the trials and hardships incide nt to, pioneer life. He was married, April 25, 1845, to Mary A. Hunter, da ughter of William and Blanche (Hendricks) Hunter, whose sketch will be se en in L. Hunter's biography. She was born March 1, 1823, and has had the f ollowing children: Levi (deceased, from disease contracted in the army), W illiam H., Miranda E. (deceased), Luther, Charles F., Alonzo and Laura. M r. Neer, when a young man, received from his father's estate $180, which w as his starting-point in life. Two years after marriage, fire consumed wh at little he and his wife had accumulated. Since that time, by well-consid ered economy, he has gathered together, year after year, most of the prope rty he owns to-day. He now has 400 acres, which he made for himself, and 1 00 that his wife got from her father's estate. Politically, Mr. Ne er is a Republican, and, although he has been Township Trustee one term, y et he neither desires or has sought official position. He and wife have be en members of the M. E. Church most of their lives. Mr. Neer has always be en in favor of schools, churches, and all classes of public benefit s. He is an affable, pleasant gentleman, and the soul of honor. A nd it is said by those who know him that his word is as good as his bon d, and nothing could tempt him to violate either. In his views he is keepi ng pace with the progressive spirit of the nineteenth century, and by h is example is one of the leaders of his township, although in his unassumi ng modesty he does not care to be recognized as such.

Th en I came across this record of a Philip Stover & Margaret (Sonner) Stove r, who had three kids, George, John and Susan. They are in the 1850 Cens us in Shenandoah county, Virginia. I think this is my John T. Stover, as t he age and names match. It also appears Philip married twice, fir st to a Margaret Sonner (widow of a Mr. Hazel) and then a Margaret Hyd e. I think he had more kids after John, Susan and George because in the 1 860 census, he is no longer in Virginia, but rather in Champaign county, O hio, minus his wife. George and Susan are with him, but no John (my great- great grandfather). Plus several other kids including a Hernado, Latvin a, etc. After that, I found a record that stated that a Catherine Stover h ad two illigetamate kids, Elias Stover and Philip Stover, before marryi ng Henry Ebert. This Philip matches the one above and the Elias see ms to match yours.

genealogy of the Stover family. It shows Jacob Stover (son of Peter Stove r, grandson of Christian Stauffer), but it only shows him having two so ns (John and Joseph) and seven daughters (one of which is Catherine Stover ).
