EMILY BOTKIN OBITUARY Grand Junction Colorado Daily Sentinel, January 6, 1919, p 4 -- part 1 The Funeral of Well Known Lady. Funeral services for the late Mrs. Emily Botkin were held in the First Met hodist church of Fruita on Sunday aftrernoon, conducted by the Rev. Stanl ey A. Curtis. The remains were laid to rest in Elmwood cemetery. The fol lowing obituary was read at the service: Emily Maxson was born in the state of Wisconsin on September 26, 1846. Wh ile still a child she moved with her parents to Kansas where she was marri ed to Silas Babcock, June 25, 1863. To them were born three children, a ll of whom died in infany. In 1868, not long after having changed her res idence from Kansas to Ohio, she was left a widow. On March 12, 1874, s he was married to Benaiah Botkin in Logan County, Ohio. Their married li fe came to its close after almost forty years, when her husband was tak en from her on October 25, 1913. In February of 1916 she came to the Gra nd Valley, and for almost three years had made her home with the fami ly of R. E. Botkin, near Fruita. The hour hand of the clock has but ju st made one round in the New year when God said to her, "It is enough; co me up higher." For 72 years, three months and five days she had endur ed as seeing Him who is invisible and now her reward is to see him who sha ll forever be visible to her liberated spirit. She is survived by two hal f-sisters, three half-brothers and five step-sons, J. M. Botkin of Grand j unction, S. C. Botkin of New Carlisle, Ohio, R. J. Botkin of LuVerne, Minn ., A. F. Botkin of Nampa, Idaho, and R. E. Botkin of Fruita. She was f or a number of years a member of the Seventh-day Adventist church. Lat er she became a member of the Menonite Brethren church, in which organizat ion she held her membership at the time of her death. We may here record t he principal facts and dates of her life; but no pen could adequately s et forth that deep, strong spirit of devotion to the Bible, to the churc h, to all things highest and holiest that mde her life calm and serene, th at led her into the valley fo the shadow with a smile, and on into the hil ls of light with a shout of victory.

History of Washington County, Pennsylvania Robinson Twp. (pp. 900-910) Village of Candor.-The land on which this village is located was pa rt of a tract taken up by Col. Samuel Beelor on a Virginia certifica te in 1780, he having settled there in 1774. The cause of the settleme nt of people at this place was that the Raccoon Church was located here. B ut few habitations were erected here before 1817. At that time the Rev. Mo ses Allen became the pastor of the church, and it was by him the village w as begun. His son, Watson Allen, started the first store. It is relat ed of him that while buying goods in Philadelphia he was asked the addre ss to sent them to. After a little thought he replied "Candor, Washing Co ." The goods were sent, and the name became generally adopted. A post-offi ce was established, and the following have been postmasters: Samuel Scrogg s, W. Bigham, Hamilton J. Cook, Benjamin Kelso, Dr. B.F. Hill, and Samu el Wasson, who is the present postmaster, and is also the merchant of t he place

A fort know as Allen's Fort was located near the line between Smith and Ro binson townships, which the Baileys, Shearers, and others used as a pla ce of security before the Beelor Fort was erected. It is possible that Jo hn Allen settled there prior to that time, but his name does not appe ar on a Virginia certificate as having lands under that title. He took a P ennsylvania warrant Nov. 5, 1784, which was surveyed to him by the na me of "Derry," Feb. 25, 1785. He lived to an old age, and died there; marr ied, but childless. The farm was left to a nephew, Moses Allen, who was n ot a thrifty man, and the farm passed to other hands. He moved to near Pit tsburgh, where he kept a tavern, and there died.

On the 27th of May, 1817, Rev. Moses Allen was installed second past or of Raccoon. He continued in that office twenty-two years. He was bo rn in Westmoreland County Sept. 5, 1780. In his youth he obtained a knowle dge of the millwright business, which he pursued diligently and successful ly some years. He received his classical education at Jefferson College, a nd studied theology with Dr. John McMillan. In 1805 he was united in marri age with Catharine, youngest daughter of Dr. McMillan. He was licens ed to preach by the Presbytery of Ohio, June 23, 1807. In November of t he same year he was ordained and installed pastor of the united church es of Providence and Jefferson, in Green County, Pa. In 1838 he left Racco on, and was afterwards pastor at Crab Apple Church in Ohio for nine year s, where he died Jan. 16, 1847, aged sixty-six. From memoranda made by h is own hand it appears that his labors were abundant. He writes: "I was pa stor of Raccoon twenty-two years, during which I preached 2685 times, admi nistered the Lord's Supper 75 times, admitted to communion of the church 3 24, baptized 15 adults and 558 children, and solemnized 190 marriages."

Mr. Allen was a man of decided and positive character, of strong mental ab ility. He was a sound theologian, and is always spoken of as a very logica l, instructive, and forcible preacher. And the records of session show th at he regarded discipline as an ordinance of God and a means of grace.

During his pastorate a new house of worship was built. It was a large bri ck edifice sixty-six by seventy-six feet, capable of seating six hundred a dults. Some of its peculiarities were a very high pulpit on the side, inst ead of at the end of the building; an outside door at the right and le ft of the pulpit and three others at the opposite side; a very broad trans verse aisle in front of the pulpit, in which the communion table was sprea d; a roof of four similar sides, all tapering towards the centre, upon whi ch stood a modest belfry. This building continued in use forty-two years.

On the 24th of August, 1882, the centennial of Raccoon was held in the chu rch, a great concourse of people being present from all the surrounding co untry, and the exercises of the day (which were intensely interesting) bei ng conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Greer M. Kerr, the Rev. John M. Barne tt, D.D. Rev. Richard Lea, D.D. Rev. SC. Jennings, Rev. C.V. McKaig, Re v. J. D. Moffit, D.D., Rev. John Kerr, and others, and among those prese nt were Revs. Fredericks, W.H. McCaughey, Ross Stevenson, Alexander Rockwe ll, Bruce, D.W. Carson, James Campbell, Hutchinson, McKnight, Fulton, Iron s, and Rev. Robert Patterson (a grandson of Rev. Joseph Patterson), two ch ildren, three grand-,and several great-grandchildren of the Rev. Moses All en. An excellent report of the proceedings of the day was published in t he Burgettstown Call of Aug. 29, 1882.

History of Washington County, Pennsylvania Smith Twp. (pp. 910-931) On the 8th of June, 1791, Lund Washington sold three hundred acres to Jo hn McKibben. This tract is now owned by Charles Provines, the heirs of Ebe nezer Smith, and the heirs of Robert Smith. On the 20th of January, 179 2, Washington conveyed all of the remainder of the tract to George McCormi ck. In the deed to McCormick a statement is made concerning the large tra ct granted by the Virginia patent as follows: "Said to contain two thousa nd acres, but in fact only one thousand acres, and is bounded," etc. A pa rt of this tract was sold by George McCormick, Feb. 7, 1792, to David Hay s, who left it by will to his son, Joseph Hays. The latter convey ed it to Josiah Allen on the 3d of February, 1795, and two years later, M ay 4, 1797, Allen conveyed it to Robert Glass. Upon his death this porti on of his estate fell to his son, Thomas Glass. He retained it till Apr il 6, 1804, when he sold one hundred and fifty-nine acres of land to Samu el McFarlane. In this deed it is recited that it is part of the tract conv eyed by the Virginia patent to Lund Washington. A small portion of the tra ct conveyed to McFarlane formed parts of two other tracts, one of which w as patented to Thomas Edwards April 3, 1797, and the other to Andrew Swear ingen Aug. 15, 1787.

HISTORY OF WASHINGTON CO PA M. R. Allen, p. 155 M. R. ALLEN, clerk of the courts of Washington county, is a grandson of Re v. Moses Allen, a prominent early settler of the county, who was born Sept ember 5, 1780, in Westmoreland county, Penn., and in his youth learned t he trade of millwright, which he pursued diligently and successfully for s ome years. His classical education he secured at Jefferson College, a nd he studied theology with Dr. John McMillan. On June 23, 1807, he was li censed to preach by the Presbytery of Ohio, and in November of same year w as ordained and installed pastor of the united churches of Providence a nd Jefferson, in Greene county, Penn. In 1816 he received a call from t he congregation of Raccoon, Washington Co., Penn., and was installed Jun e, 1817, and continued to exercise the pastoral office for twenty-two year s. The Rev. S. C. Jennings, who had been associated with the Rev. Moses All en for many years, in an address delivered at the "Centennial Meetin g" of the Raccoon Church, spoke of the Rev. Moses Allen, second past or of the church, as follows: "Tall in person, grave and sedate in manner s. A preacher of ability, a great reasoner, logical and instructive, irrep roachable in character, and diligent in catechising the youth. His pastora te extended over a period of twenty-two years. During this pastorate a n ew house of worship was built, which was of brick and capable of seating 6 00 persons. This building continued in use forty-two years."

In 1838 he left Raccoon, and was afterward pastor for nine years at Crab A pple Church in Ohio, and he died there January 18, 1847, aged sixty-six ye ars. It appears from memoranda in his own handwriting that his labors we re abundant. "I was pastor of Raccoons," he writes, "twenty-two years, dur ing which I preached 2,685 times; administered the Lord's Supper seventy-f ive times; admitted to the communion of the church 324 persons; baptized f ifteen adults and 558 children, and solemnized 190 marriages." He was a m an of decided and positive character, of strong mental ability. He was a s ound theologian, and is always spoken of as a very logical, instructive a nd forcible preacher. Mr. Allen was married, in 1805, to Catherine, the yo ungest daughter of Rev. John McMillan, D. D., who was the pioneer Presbyte rian minister, and founder of the "Log Cabin School," which ultimately bec ame Jefferson College, of Canonsburg, Penn. John McMillan Allen was born, July 11, 1810, in Greene county, Penn., a nd reared to agricultural pursuits, which he followed through life. In Mar ch, 1837, he married Margaret Ann Riddell, daughter of Rev. John Riddel l, D. D., first pastor of Robinson Run Church, by the edge of Washington a nd Allegheny counties. To this union was born one child Moses Riddell All en the subject of this sketch. This wife dying February 28, 1856, Mr. All en married, for his second wife, Mrs. Margaret Ann Lockart, mother of ex-S heriff Lockart, and one child came of this marriage, Annie Eliza, now t he wife of J. His education was received at the comm on schools and at Franklin College, New Athens, Ohio, after which he taug ht school in Washington county, Penn. For a time he carried on farming ope rations, also a mercantile business, and on August 2, 1881, he founded t he Burgettstown Call, which he published till January 1, 1887, when, havi ng been elected to the office of clerk of courts of Washington count y, he sold the paper to the owner of the Enterprise (J. H. Cramer), sin ce when the two have been consolidated with the title Enterprise-Call. M r. Allen then removed to Washington, where he has since had his home, havi ng been re-elected in 1890 to the office he holds.

On January 14, 1864, Mr. Allen was married to Ella M. Daugherty, of Burget tstown, daughter of John Daugherty (of the same place) and Abigail B. (Can on) Daugherty, daughter of Joshua Canon, and granddaughter of Col. John Ca non, the founder of Canonsburg. Mr. and Mrs. Daugherty were the paren ts of five children: John Wesley, who died in 1878; Ella M. (Mrs. M. R. Al len); Jennie C., wife of W. B. Porter, of Burgettstown; Flora B., teach er in the East Washington public schools, and Asenath M., who died Novemb er 3, 1804. The father of this family, who was a wagon maker and carria ge builder by trade, well known and highly respected, died in August, 186 6; in April, 1877, the mother followed him to the grave, and they sleep th eir last sleep in the cemetery at Burgettstown. They were both nativ es of Washington county, the father born in Donegal township. To Mr. and M rs. Allen were born six children, of whom the following is a brief recor d: John E. is with his father; Harper Riddell is his father's assista nt in the office, and his special work now is preparing the new index of t he Orphans' Court, from the organization of the county up to date; Wesl ey Hays is also assistant clerk with his father (he was married in 18 91 to Miss Dora E. Mounts, of Washington county; one child a daughter Hel en M., has been born to them); William, died September 11, 1881, and Effi e, died August 28, 1881, both in infancy, aged eleven and seven respective ly; Maynord Robert is attending Washington and Jefferson College, freshm an class. In 18 80 he enumerated the census of the First Precinct of Smith township. Sin ce coming to Washington he has served as director of the Keystone Buildi ng & Loan Association, a local organization.

For three generations preceding our subject, the family has been Presbyter ian in its religious affiliations and workers in the cause; it is, therefo re, nothing of wonder that Mr. Allen and his entire family are followers a nd supporters of the same principles and creed. Mr. Allen is a member a nd deacon of Dr. Brownson's (First Presbyterian) Church of Washington, a nd is also a member of the Improved Order of Heptasophs, of Washington, ha ving filled the office of "Archon" in the order since its organizatio n. Alexander Dunlap entered and lived upon the farm now owned by M. F. Pence. He was noted for his many peculiarities. The announcement is in his own writing, and we give it verbatim et literatim

TAKE NOTICE.-That I offer as a candidate to represent Champaign county in the next, legislative session of Ohio in the ensuing election October next.. I am a republican, I am against the black and colored people being on the same footin as the whites is. I am in favor of general Andrew Jackson being president to take seat in march next. I adds no more at present, but remains a candidate.

[HI61495] (Research):From Marilyn Webber in KS 12/2005 mfwebber@msn.com have a photo of him in a Masonic uniform. I also have a photo of his wif e, Annie E., with two of her sisters....Rebecca Clark Geiser & Mary Jane " Mollie" Ridenour. The photo is quite large and sits on an antique eas el in an antique frame. The photo was given to my spouses grandparents ma ny years ago, but we don't know for sure by whom. I have corresponded f or several years with Fred Stein whose ancestors were also Clark' s. It is the Clark family that I am truly researching. Fred is a descend ant of James Henry Clark who was another sibling of Annie Clark & Samuel C lark I would like to find out more about Ann Clark Elifritz's ancestors. Accor ding to family records the parents of Ann both died shortly after the e nd of the Civil War. Evidently one of the remaining children was but a ba by, and he was put out for adoption by his uncle Samuel Clark Sr. The chi ld's name was also Samuel Clark. He was adopted by Adam Kelman. Evident ly Adam kept in contact with some of the Clark relations. Young Samuel Cl ark Kelman wasn't told about being adopted until he was about 18 yea rs of age. He left home in a "huff" and didn't return for many year s. He married in CO and had several children there before returning to Re no county, KS.

Mabel Clark Kelman was my spouses grandmother. She was the daughter of Sa muel Clark Kelman who was put out for adoption by his uncle Samuel Clark a fter his parents both died. Samuel's parents were suppose to be James Cla rk & Jane Hill or Foster. I can't find all that info yet. Sam was the ba by of the family, and Annie E. Clark Ellifritz was an older sister. Samu el Clark Kelman was adopted by Adam Kelman of Scotland (not sure if he w as actually born in Scotland or not). Samuel was not told he was adopt ed until he was somewhere in his late teens or early twenties after the Ke lman's had moved from OH to KS. He left home at that time feeling deceiv ed and furious. He traveled to Colorado where he married and had four chi ldren. A fifth child was born but we don't know if in CO or KS. The six th child was born in Reno Co., KS after Samuel finally returned to his ado ptive parents farm. Adam had tried to maintain communication with Samue l; Adam finally convinced Samuel he needed help running the farm. Sam ret urned and raised his family in KS. I have been researching the Clark's a nd related families for years.
