[HI55019] (Research):Champaign Co, Oh 1991 - pg 89 Biography s/o William Black and Sarah Hickli ng

CCGS Newsletter Dec 2004 pg Captain Alexander Black settled in Champaign county in 1809. His farm w as located on the west side route 68 down the bill where route 68 descen ds into Mad River valley. This man, next to Simon Kenton, probably h ad as much experience with Indian warfare as anyone among the early se t- tiers of Champaign county. Born in Virginia in 1764, he migrated to Te nnessee where he married Jane Crockett, then removed to Kentucky and h ad an active part in many of the expeditions of Kentucky Militia against t he Shawnee Indians in Ohio. At the baffle of Fallen Timbers in 1794 he w as wounded, but recovered and after becoming a citizen of Ohio in 18 09 he again bore his share in the War of 1812 holding a commission as cap tain. He lived to the ripe old age of 90 years, passing away in 1854. He h ad prospered and became the owner of much land in the Mad River valley, no rthwest corner of Salem township.

At the time Black and Mcllvain settled in Salem township, there were ma ny indians living just a &w miles north of them in Logan county. James Mc Pherson then lived in Section 2 of Harrison township, and was then acti ng as Indian agent in looking after Indian affairs with the U. S (3ov- em inent. McPherson brought a force of Indians and helped both Black and Mcl lvain build their log cabin homes on their farms. James Black, then 11 yea rs of age, and son of Alexander Black, was the author of that informati on to Thomas Cowgill in Beers History, 1881.

James Black further stated that Moses Mcllvain built a brick home on his f arm in 1817, and in 1818, Alexander Black also erected a brick home at th is place. The Indians and Indian chiefs often stayed all night with bo th of these old pioneers, sometimes camping at the dooryard and at oth er times sleeping in the house. Tecumnseh was a frequent visitor before t he War of 1812.

Further information about Indian burials was given by James Black to Cowgi ll. He stated he had witnessed several Indian burials on either side of M ad River. They usually dug a round hole in the sand or gavel and crowd ed the body down feet first in a half sitting position, the head sometim es only a foot or two under ground. Prominent chiefs were often buried wi th much ceremony and their graves often marked with an elevated mound of e arth.

According to the story told by the venerable James Black, who was th en 84 years old, having been born in 1796, the first school held in that v icinity was held in a log cabin on the farm that Samuel Black owned in 187 0. That would be southeast quarter of Section 2, Harrison township. Th is is also the point where Deuchouquet, the Frenchman, had his squatters c abin in 1795. Black stated that Robert Crockett was the teacher of this sc hool and the pupils who attended were: John, William, Samuel and James Kav anaugh; the children of Alexander Black and Moses Mcllvain (he does not gi ve the names of these, Black had eight and Mcllvain about the same); a nd an adopted daughter of George Petty. The Kavanaugh family lived in t he adjoining section of Salem township and the Black and Mcllvain ne xt to the Kavanaugh’s.

CCGS Newsletter Summer 1992 pg 52 FIRST WRITE RESIDENT OF CHAMPAIGN CO. RECALLED by Warren Everhart

[Editor’s note: Our last issue contained the final installment of Civil W ar columns by Everhart, who died in 1962. We continue to reprint other art icles dealing with local history and genealogy.]

THE UPPER MAD RIVER VALLEY where it joins Logan Co. was the seat of much a ctivity in the earliest settlement of Champaign Co. Capt. Alexander Blac k, Moses Mcllvain, James McPherson, and a Frenchman named Deuchouquet h ad all located in this section very early.

McPherson and the Frenchman were there with about 500 Shawnee Indians in 1 794. McPherson, a white captive of the Indians who had been taken on the Licki ng River in Kentucky some years before, lived with the Shawnees several years. He marr ied a white whoman who was also a captive.

Black and Mcllvain settled in Salem Twp.; McPherson and the Frenchman we re already there. Later McPherson and Deuchouquet both became Logan Co. re sidents. A very accurate statement, made by a son of Alexander Black, w as that in 1795 the Frenchman lived in a squatter’s cabin on Muddy Cree k, a branch of Mad River, in Sec. 2 of liarrison Twp. If this was true, t hen Deuchouquet was the first white man to live in Champaign Co. Howeve r, he had no title to land.

But I)euchouquet' s name appears on an Indian deed recorded in Champaign C o. deed Record Book Vol. B, p. 312. It conveys one square mile of la nd to Margaret Moore and her two children, Joseph Moore and Nancy Stuar t. Seven Shawnee Indian chiefs signed it (“Xl; F. Deuchouquet acted as int erpreter and witness.

This land is in Logan Co., east of Miami River, just north of the Greenvil le Treaty line, and mostly west of SR. 69 [now 235]. The grantees nam ed in tins deed were part white and part Indian. Tradition has it that Mar garet Moore is buried at Muddy Run Cemetery, in the extreme NW cower of Sa lem Twp. My son, Otis, and I visited there a year ago; it is now abandon ed and not in very good shape. We failed to locate any grave of these peop le, though we think they are really buried there.

Capt. Black settled in Champaign Co. during 1809. His farni was west of R t. 68 going north down the hill where 68 descends into Mad River Valley. N ext to Simon Kenton, he probably had as much experience with Indian warfa re as any one else among early Champaign Co. settlers.

Bon in Virginia in 1764, he migrated to Tennessee, where he married Jane C rockett, then removed to Kentucky. He was active in many expeditions of Ke ntucky militia against the Shawnee Indians in Ohio.

At the Battle of Fallen Ttdbers in 1794, he was wounded, but recovered. Af ter becoming a citizen of Ohio in 1809, he again did his share, holdi ng a connission as captain in the War of 1812. He lived to the ripe old a ge of 90, passing away in 1854. He had prospered and owned much land in M ad River Valley, NW corner of Salem Twp.

Black and Mcilvain settled in Salem Twp.; many Indians lived just a few mi les north of them in Logan Co. James McPherson, of Sec. 2, Harrison Twp ., was acting as Indian agent, looking after their affairs with the U.S. g overnment. McPherson brought a force of Indians and helped both Black a nd Mcllvain build log cabins on their farms. James Black, then 11 and s on of Alexander Black, told that to Thomas Cowgill in Beers History (1880) .

James Black further stated that Moses Mcllvain built a brick home on his f arm in 1817, and in 1818 Alexander Black also erected one at his place. In dians and their chiefs often stayed all night with both pioneers, sometim es camping at the dooryard and other tines sleeping in the house. Tecuins eh was a frequent visitor before the War of 1812.

James Black gave Cowgill further information about Indian burials:

He had witnessed several on either side of Mad River. They usually dug a r ound hole in sand or gravel and crowded the body down feet first in a half —sitting position, the head sometbues only a foot or two underground. Prom inent chiefs were often buried with much ceremony, their graves marked wi th an elevated mound of earth.

According to Black, then 84 (born in 1796), the first school held in th at vicinity was at a log cabin on the fann Samuel Black owned in 1870. Th at would be the SE quarter of Sec. 2, Harrison Twp. This is also the poi nt where Deuchouquet, the Frenchman, had his squatter’s cabin in 1795.

Black stated that Robert Crockett taught this school. Pupils who attend ed were:

•John, William, Samuel, and James Kavanaugh;

•The children of Alexander Black and Moses Mcllvain (he does not give the ir names; Black had eight and McIlvain about the same number);

•An adopted daughter of George Petty.

In 1949, when I visited Urbana with my parents, we stopped at a broom fact ory near my father's boyhood home on Bloomfield Avenue and purchased a bro om. At the time I didn't have any clue as to the significance of the bro om industry in Urbana, but later, when I studied our family's history, I l earned something about my great grandmother's older brother, David S. Perr y, and realized that that factory could have been the successor of one sta rted by uncle David.

The following biography of David S. Perry is from page 659 of the Centenni al Biographical History of Champaign Co., Ohio, published by the Lewis Pub lishing Co., Chicago, Illinois, 1902. It seems to contain at least two ser ious errors of fact, misstating the names of both of D. S. Perry's grandmo thers. One of the most expert authorities on broom corn in Champaign Count y, D. S. PERRY, a substantial citizen of Urbana, with interests in the sur rounding agricultural, industrial and banking enterprises. A native of Ven ango County, Penna., he was born February 20, 1837, a son of John and Ma ry (Smith) Perry, and grandson of Moses and Phoebe (Cross) Perry.(1) The o rigin of the family is authentically traced far back into Scottish histor y, in which country Moses Perry was born,(2) and from where he emigrat ed to America with his parents when yet a boy. His wife was born in Irelan d, and as a child crossed the sea with the rest of her family, settlin g, as did the Perrys, in Pennsylvania. After the marriage of the young peo ple, they removed to Venango County, Pennsylvania, and lived upon the sa me farm for sixty-five years, or until the time of their respective death s. While tilling their land and taking a prominent part in the grneral aff airs of the County, the grandparents reared a family of five sons and thr ee daughters.

The parents of D. S. Perry were born, reared and married in Pennsylvani a, in which State the maternal grandfather, David Smith,(3) was born, a nd in his longevity showed a truly remarkable hold on life, attaining to f our months less than one hundred years. He married Ann Lane,(4) who w as of Welsh descent, and who died at a comparatively early age. To John a nd Mary (Smith) Perry were born five sons and four daughters, one son a nd two daughters being deceased. Three of the sons served their count ry in the Union Army during the Civil War. Two of the daughters, Mrs. Jo hn W. Snyder(5) and Mrs. D. C. Carey(6), as well as D. S. Perry, are the o nly members of the family living in Champaign County.

Up to the time of his removal to Urbana in 1880, D. S. Perry engaged in fa rming and stock raising, and from his fourteenth year has been interest ed in either the raising, purchasing or manufacture of broom corn. While s till on the paternal homestead, he attended the public schools, and in t he Spring of 1862(7) settled on a farm in Union Township, this County, whe re, with his brother(8) he engaged on an extensive scale in the cultivati on of broom corn. The handling of this necessary commodity proved such a r eliable source of revenue, that on locating permanently in Urbana, Mr. Per ry devoted himself entirely to promoting his chosen industry, and with h is brother formed the broom corn manufacturing enterprise under the firm n ame of Perry Brothers. In time the brother withdrew from the concern by di sposing of his share to Mr. White, and for the following ten years the aff airs of the manufactory were conducted under the firm name of Perry and Wh ite. At the expiration of this time, the interests of Mr. Perry passed in to the hands of J. D. Valentine, and the now reliable and successful fi rm of White, Valentine and Company maintain the old substantial business i ntegrity fostered so many years by the Perry Brothers.

In the meantime Mr. Perry had been perfecting arrangements for an independ ent broom corn business along somewhat different lines, and he has since b een engaged in the supply department, principally in buying and selling co rn, and also the machinery required for its conversion into brooms. He h as heavy holdings in several concerns, notably the Ohio Straw-Board Compan y, of which he is President and chief promoter. Additional responsibiliti es have been assumed as President of the Ohio Laundry Company, of Urban a, as a Director in the Citizens National Bank, and as a stock holder in w arehouse interests in Arcola, Illinois. Mr. Perry is also interested in ge neral farming and he raises stock on an extensive scale.

On the 30th of March, 1864, Mr. Perry was united in marriage to Susan L. M adden, and of this union there have been three children, one of whom, a so n,(9) died at the age of seventeen years. The daughters are married, respe ctively to Mr. A. B. Offenbacher(10) and L. C. Shyrigh.(11) Mr. Per ry is a member of the Board of Trade, and in political affiliation is a Re publican. With his wife he is connected with the M. E. Church. His is a ca reer which has been watched with increasing pride on the part of his fell ow citizens, among whom he is regarded as a typical businessman of the pro gressive and representative order.

The following mention of D. S. Perry's business is taken from the histo ry of Urbana on page 380 of the History of Champaign County, publish ed in 1881 by W. R. Beers & Co.: Within the last few years, two establishments have been built for the manu facture of corn-brooms, both near the mouth of North Main street, one by M essrs. David Perry & Bros., the other by J. J. Robinson & Sons. The two es tablishments work from thirty to forty hands, turning out sixty to one hun dred dozen brooms a day, which are shipped to Pennsylvania, Western and No rthern Ohio, Indiana and Michigan. Dugan Prairie has a reputation for rais ing an unsurpassed quality of broom-corn - J. W. Ogden, David Carey, Dav id Perry, Mark Higbee, Freyhoff, Dalhousie and perhaps others living on t he prairie making a specialty of the crop and illustrating the first princ iples of commercial prosperity - the bringing of the producer and manufact urer side by side. The enterprises thus begun on the returning tide of prosperity, conduct ed within control and under the hand of experience, bid fair to become man ufactories of magnitude and importance.

Urbana Citizen 29 Jan 1917 D. S. Perry Died Monday Morning Rather Suddenly HAD BEEN ILL BUT THOUGHT TO BE HOLDING HIS OWN WAS URBANA'S MOST WEALTHY RESIDENT Estate Conservatively Estimated at $200,000 -- Prominent Manufacturer. The community was shocked by the report of the death of David S. Perry, pr obably Urbana's wealthiest and one of her most prominent citizens Monday m orning at 3:30 o'clock at his home on North Main Street. It was not genera lly known that Mr. Perry was seriously ill and his death came as a decid ed surprise to his many friends and acquaintances. Since Thanksgiving he h as been in failing health and for the past week had been bedfast. While h is condition during the past four days had been serious, repeated ralli es had served to encourage the members of the family and even on Saturd ay he had taken nourishment for the first time in several days and that w as counted an encouraging sign. Death was due to pneumonia contracted abo ut a week ago, although he had had considerable trouble with his heart. H is physician, Dr. Marlo Houston, stated Monday that Mr. Perry had been a v ery sick man for some time and that he had not left the house for two mont hs. Dr. Houston had been in constant attendance during the past few days a nd noted the rapid decline.

Native of Pennsylvania Mr. Perry was born in Franklin, Venango county, Pennsylvania, February 2 0, 1837 and was within a few days of his eightieth birthday. He was of Sco ttish origin. The parents of the subject of this sketch, John and Mary (Sm ith) Perry, were born , reared and married in Pennsylvania. Here was bo rn five sons and three daughters, one son and two daughters of which besid es Mr. Perry, are deceased.

Mr. Perry moved to Champaign county in 1862, locating on a farm on the Lud low road. Here he engaged in the raising of broom corn and grew to be o ne of the experts in that line of farm products. He engaged in the manufac ture of brooms in a small way, using a part of his crops to that end. In 1 886 he came to Urbana, where his two brothers James and William, had a bro om shop. He entered the business with them forming the Perry Brothers' Bro om Company and going into the manufacture of brooms upon an extensive scal e.

Had Large Broom Factory Their shop became one of the largest in the country and was a power in t he industry. Later the brothers, desiring to go west, sold out their inter ests to the late Joseph White and, after a successful term as Perry & Whit e, Mr. Perry sold out his interests to J. D. Valentine and the company bec ame known as White, Valentine & Co., which still flourishes. Mr. Perry's a ctivities took new lines and about twelve years ago with other local capit alists, organized the Urbana Packing Company which is one of the city's be st industries. Mr. Perry also owned extensive farm holdings and at the ti me of his death was one of the richest, if not the richest men in Champai gn county. His estate is conservatively estimated at $200,000. He was vi ce president of the Citizen's National Bank and was identified in other lo cal enterprises. He was married on March 30, 1864, to Susan L. Madden and to this union thr ee children were born, two daughters surviving with the wife. The daughte rs are Mrs. Alice Offenbacher and Mrs. Elva Shyrigh. A son David Good Perr y, died July 27, 1887, at the age of seventeen years. Three brothers, Jam es and William now of Indianapolis, and John of Venice, California and a s ister Mrs. John Snyder of Urbana also survive. Two sisters, Mrs. David Car ey and Miss Anna Perry are deceased. Mr. Perry united with the First Methodist church in 1874 and had been an a ctive member since that time, contributing largely to the organization a nd lending it his strong moral support. By nature he was modest, quiet a nd most kindly. Never a harsh word was spoken and gentleness and kindne ss played the big part in his life. He held the respect and esteem of a wi de circle of friends both in a business way and socially. He will be miss ed in business and church circles as well as in his home where he was a ge ntle companion and a kind parent. The funeral arrangements had not been completed at noon, Monday and word f rom the brothers in the west was expected before these arrangements wou ld be

31 Jan 1917 newspaper described D. S. Perry's funeral: Simplicity Marks End LAST SAD RITES FOR D. S. PERRY IN KEEPING WITH THE LIFE HE HAD LIVED. The funeral of the late D. S. Perry was held from his home on North Main s treet Wednesday afternoon and was largely attended. Many prominent citize ns gathered to pay honor to the friend they had known, both in a busine ss and a social way. The directorships of the Citizens' Bank and the Urba na Packing Company, in both of which the deceased had held offices, and t he official board of the First Methodist church, in which Mr. Perry had be en prominent, attended in a body and presented resolutions of regret up on the death of their brother and friend. The services were in charge of Rev. J. H. Denney of the First Methodist ch urch and were impressive in their simplicity. The minister spoke of the ma ny excellent qualities of the deceased and the excellent example his li fe had been for others. Two favorite hymns, one of them, Tennyson's "Cross ing the Bar", were read impressively by the minister. Beautiful flowers, a number of them elaborate set pieces, were tender ed by friends, both as individuals and organizations. The interment was made in the family burial lot in Oak Dale Cemetery. T he following were the pall bearers: W. R. Wilson, J. D. Valentine, Phil ip Morgan, Julius Rasmussen and I. O. Tritt. G. S. Tarbox, of Arcola, Illi nois, a broomcorn man, with a friendship for the deceased of many years' d uration, was present and was an honorary pallbearer. Among those from a distance were James Perry, a brother of the deceased, a nd wife of Indianapolis; Rev. George Carey, a nephew, of Troy, and Re v. C. D. Munsey, a friend of many years, now a resident of South Charlesto n. William Perry, of Indianapolis, a traveling salesman, too far away to a rrive in time for the funeral, and John Perry, another brother, residi ng in California, were not present. The Citizen's National Bank and the National Bank of Urbana closed in hon or of the deceased and remained closed during the time of the funeral. T he Urbana Packing Company also closed down during the funeral period.

1 We have considerable evidence from several sources that Moses' wife w as not Phoebe Cross, but Sarah Russell. We don't know how this biography c ame up with Phoebe's name. As far as we know, it's the only source for t he information that Phoebe Cross may have been Moses Perry's wife. Watch f or more discussion of this issue on Moses' page. 2 We haven't found any evidence as to where Moses Perry, or his wife, we re born. Their alleged foreign origins may be embellishments by D. S. Per ry or by the person who prepared the biographical sketch. 3 Could the "S" in David S. Perry's name have stood for Smith? 4 This is the only place where David Smith's wife's name is given as An n. Our other sources say her first name was Sarah. Could she have been Sar ah Ann? 5 Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Perry (1848-1930). 6 Sarah Jane "Sally" Perry (1841-1914) was my great-grandmother. 7 David S. Perry doesn't seem to be listed in either Miami or Champaign co unties in the 1860 census. However, there is a "D. S. Perry" listed in M ad River township in Clark county and a "David Perry" in Union township, L ogan county, both of which are good possibilities. A "D. S. Perry" is list ed in the history of Union township on page 401 of Beers' history, as a to wnship trustee for the year 1879. (See the Perry family's 1880 U. S. cens us data.) 8 James Perry (1839-1936). 9 David Good Perry (1870-1887). 10 Mary Alice "Allie" Perry (1865-1951) married Alvin B. Offenbacher. 11 Martha Elva Perry (1867-1930) married Clarence L. Shyrigh.

BIOGRAPHICAL REVIEW OF CASS, SCHUYLER and BROWN COUNTIES, Illinois - 1892 Chicago: Biographical Review Publishing Co.

Page 452 DARIUS RUNKLE was born in Champagne county, Ohio, February 10, 1813. He w as the son of William and Mary (Pence) Runkle. William was born in Virgin ia and went to Ohio in an early day, following his trade of tanner until a bout 1850, when he came to Illinois, rented a farm in Morgan county and li ved there until the close of the war. He then came to near where his son n ow lives, and died, aged eighty-four. His wife, also born in Virginia, di ed at the same place, aged eighty-six. The Runkles came from Germany, a nd the grandparents of Darius lost their parents on the trip over to th is country.

Darius is one of ten children, four of whom are yet living. He remain ed at home until twenty-one years of age, working at the tanning busine ss and farming. He had very limited schooling and is entirely a self-ma de man. After he was twenty-one years old he worked for $10 a month for t wo years and then clerked for a brother-in-law in a general store in Sidne y, Ohio, for two years more. He then started for Illinois, coming to Beard stown, and then walked over to Doddsville, wading two miles in water. Th is was in the spring of 1837, and he came to take charge of Samuel Dodd 's general store. He continued in that for a year and one-half, and duri ng that time entered eighty acres which later he sold and then bought 1 60 acres of wild land where he now lives. He also bought another eighty ac res in the timber. In the fall of 1838, he returned to Ohio and remained w ith his father working in the tan yard for two years, and then came back h ere and commenced improving his farm. He broke forty acres, built a story- and-a-half house, and on October 12, 1840, he married Ann Maria Walker, w ho was born in Adams county, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Andr ew Walker of Adams county, Pennsylvania, who came here in 1840, and settl ed on Mr. Dodd's farm. Mrs. Runkle was one of nine children. Mr. and Mr s. Runkle have ten living children. The sons are: James J., William, Charl es W., Joseph C. and Stephen A.; and the daughters: Mary A., Laura, Liny a nd Clara J. Mary A. had two sons and four daughters: Clara J. two daughte rs and two sons; both the mothers are deceased.

After marriage Mr. and Mrs. Runkle moved into the log house he had buil t, and remained there until 1866, and then moved into his present fine hom e, which is one of the best in McDonough, having cost $10,000 and being fi rst class in every particular. Mr. Runkle has built four or five differe nt times where his sons live, and has bought three farms with houses up on them. He commenced with $990, and had to borrow $10 to enter his fir st eighty acres. He now has 3,000 acres of land, 970 in Schuyler county a nd 1,940 in McDonough county, and he has given each son a fine farm. He ma kes a specialty of fine stock, and has been engaged in various kinds of bu siness during his life. In 1841 he bought a stock of goods, and was a merc hant for two or three years, and was Postmaster in 1843-‘44; he also ke pt a stage. He was Supervisor of School Boards for years, and he with t wo others built the first schoolhouse in this district, and it also serv ed as a church. He also loaned money to build a pioneer mill and tri ed to get a railroad through this section. He has helped many a deservi ng and worthy object. His wife has been a church member ever since their m arriage, being one of the first to take an active interest in church and S unday school work in the place. She was very active in everything tendi ng toward the building of churches and schools, and was a most worthy comp anion to as public-spirited man as Mr. Runkle. Mr. Runkle can count his fr iends by the number of his acquaintances and his enemies are now know n. He treats every one well, and the deserving are never turned away witho ut help and words of cheer. Politically he has always affiliated with t he Whig and Republican parties. He voted first for Henry Clay, and at t he birth of the Republican party voted for Fillmore. He is very well satis fied with Republican principles.

When grandfather was planning to marry C ar oline Mumma, who lived overthe hill east, on the farm presently own ed by William and Ruth Clark, hisfathergave him4Q acresfrom thewest si de of the farm for his newly planned life. And from the grove on that la nd he had lumber cut and aged in preparation for the house. It is the o ne you see at the end of the lane. All the maple trees lining the lane a nd in the yard he planted and many times I rode on the sled holding the la rge containers to gather sap from the tapped trees; grandmother then ma de the syrup. They were married in September 1873 and lived there until so metime in 1914, when they moved to Urbana and rented the farm. Five chil d ren were born to them — Florence, Blanche (my mother), Bertha, Homer, a nd Crystal. The youngest, Crystal, had very poor health, so grandfather bu ilt on one more room — east side of house by the dining room, so she cou ld always be near the family. The room had a big - south window so she cou ld see the yard; also a large fireplace in the southeast corner for hea t. We all spent many hours in there with her. Edwin K. Flumes farmed the acreage. Most important of his crops was his ve ry large straw berry patch, generally in the field in front of the hous e. In season he would pitch a tent in which he kept his berry baskets a nd crates. The pick ers — farm boys usually — would take the quarts to t he person manning the tent for recording the number of quarts picked. Th en Mr. Humes would crate them to deliver to gro ceries in Urbana, al so to homes for special orders. The sum of two to five cents a quart in t he early 1900’s was paid for picking. Edwin K. Humes and family were devo ut members of Buckcreek Presbyterian Church; he served as an elder many ye ars. When Buck- creek ceased to have a pastor and services, he moved his m embership to the Urbana Presbyterian Church. He died in 1928. Because ma ny of the original maple trees along the lane are either gone or are dyin g, Mr. Weller has planted another row of maples the other side of the lan e, so it will always be Maple Tree Lane Farm. The Buck Creek Church was different from its Urbana neighbor in the depart ment of singing. This was led by Elder Samuel Humes and Deacon John Earso m, who stood up before the congregation and performed the duties of choris ters. They sang as though they enjoyed it, and the whole congregation join ed in the singing with a good will and earnestness, and verified the Scrip tural injunction to "sing aloud and make a joyful noise.

[HI55721] (Research):History of Clark co, OHIO Jeremiah Curl, the father of Mrs. William Coffey, and Bazill Harrison, were early settlers. The former located on the north side of Buck Creek Valley, a short distance to the southwest of the present residence of Albert Cheney, and the latter on the Columbus road, at a cabin on the eastern part of the farm now owned by Nelson Hammond. It will be noticed that the first settlements were established in the western part of the township. This circumstance deserves a brief explanation. The eastern portion of the township, it will be remembered, is Virginia Military land, and one hindrance to its settlement was the question of conflicting claims a difficulty peculiar to these lands-and another, was the fact that large tracts were owned by Thomas M. Bailey, who, like most land speculators, deferred the sa le of his lands for a great many years; hence the settlement of the Bailey lands has been of comparatively recent date.

Beers History 1881 John Taylor came from Virginia and settled on King's Creek in 1806, at t he place where the village of Kingston now is. He purchased 640 acres of l and from Isaac Zane, for which he paid four dollars per acre. This land, t ogether with two other sections of the same size, was given to Isaac Za ne by the United States Government in consideration of services rendered t he army under the command of General Wayne, in 1794. In 1810, John Tayl or erected a grist-mill, now (in 1880) owned by Henry Wolfe & Sons

Grandmother Emma said that Colin/Colen/Coley/Colfax was a fine drummer b oy during the Civil War. In the next segment of the LOWE chapter of Fami ly History I will attempt to explain our Quaker connection. We note in Co lin’s obituary, following, that his funeral services were held at the FRIE NDS Church in Urbana. “Friends” usually infers “Quaker”. I want to foll ow up on this. Was there a Quaker Church in Urbana in 1930?

DIED on Monday morning last after a brief illness Mrs. Ann Shyrigh, wi fe of Mr. Levi Shyrigh of this place. Age about 28 years." From Urbana C itizen and Gazette 24 March, 1864

[HI55774] (Research):Then there was the old Shyrigh drum Corps. They were a family of drumme rs known from coast to coast and they performed in almost every city of a ny size in the United States. They were in their prime just after the Civ il War and what wonderfiul music they used to dispense! The snare drumme rs were William and Levi. If these two drummers couldn’t make a snare dr um talk, then we don’t know what real martial music sounds like. Claren ce Shyrigh, son of Levi, usually played the bass drum, while Byrd Shyrig b, brother of Levi and William, played the fife. In after years as the ol der ones passed on, the sons of this family of famous drummers occasional ly assisted by some outsiders, carried on and are today fizrnishing mart ial music for different occasions. Billy Clifford Shyrigh finally became g ood enough to win a medal as champion drummer of the country and toured wi th Al C. Fields minstrels, putting on a snare drum specially act. Of la te years Billy Clifford, Dr. H. 0. Butcher, Clyde Shyrigh and Bert Covaul t, and occasionally Lou Hovey, have furnished martial music here. Did y ou know that Urbana’s Billy Clifford, known in those early days as Cli ff Shyrigh, was a bell boy for the famous old Weaver House? Dillon Copyright 2004 ------------------------------ Hudsonville in located in the southern part of Harrison Township, Davie ss County, Indiana. It was laid out and platted as a town by Daniel Jacks on one of the earliest settlers in the area. Daniel Jackson, a veter an of the War of 1812 and his wife Alice (Espa) Colbert settled in the ar ea around 1814 on land obtained by land grant from the United States Gover nment and other purchases. He formed several hundred acres of land with t he help of his sons Ulysses, John, Julian, David and Milton. He planned t he town before Daviess County was carved out of Knox County but did not re cord the plat in the public records of Daviess County until May 29, 185 4. Daniel Jackson named the town Hudsonville after his place of bir th on the Hudson River in the State of New York. Other early settle rs in the area at the time of the platting were the families of Reas on S. Chapman, James Allen, J.B. Colbert, Isaac Rogers, John Coffey, Willi am C. Lucas, John Wilson, James Peachee, the Kelso family and the Henry Sh ircliff family.

Hudsonville was a port of the East Fork of White River, one of the rive rs in the chain of rivers so important to early riverboat traffic and sett lers traveling westward in search of land. Early settlers migrating fr om the East and Kentucky crossed the East Fork of White River near Flat Ro ck. Ferries such as the Himsel ferry sprung up enabling travelers to cro ss from what is now Pike and Dubois Counties to Daviess County.

Hudsonville had postal as early as 1858; however, the service was mov ed to nearby Glendale in 1866 and then back to Hudsonville in 1904.

The history of Hudsonville is closely associated with that of Glendale, on ly two miles north.
