O. S. KELLY. Champion Works, Springfield; is a native of Clark County; s on of John Kelly, who was a native of Kentucky, and came with his father 's family to Ohio in 1806. They settled in Green Township, then a pa rt of Champaign County, where John grew to manhood and took part in the w ar of 1812; his father, James Kelly, was a soldier of the Revolution fr om the colony of Virginia, and raised a large family-eight sons and four d aughters-most of whom have descendants now residing in this county. The su bject of this sketch was born on a farm adjoining the old homestead, whi ch his father purchased after his marriage with Margaret, daughter of Alex ander McBeth, who was also an earlv resident of that part of the county. H is father died Dec. 23, 1,824, when he was but 10 years old, but his moth er remained on the farm, and was married a second time about four years la ter. Oliver S. remained at home until 14 years of age, when circumstanc es compelled him to leave home and take care of himself, but fortunate ly he found a home with W. F. McIntire, familiarly known as "Uncle Billy ," with whom he remained assisting on the farm until the spring of 1842, w hen he came to Springfield and began a carpenter apprenticeship with Jose ph McIntire, a brother of his foster parent, serving three years, for whi ch he received $168, in addition to his instruction in the trade and boar d. After which he worked as journeyman about one year, when he entered in to partnership with J. A. Anderson, and the firm of Anderson & Kelly we re leading builders and contractors until the spring of 1852. when the par tnership was dissolved and Mr. Kelly went to California. leaving his wi fe and one child here. After a stay of nearly four years having accumulat ed enough money for a start, he returned to Springfield in 1856, and f or a short time was connected with a wholesale grocery house. Jan. 1, he b ecame a member of the firm of Whiteley, Fassler & Kelly; he being tak en in partly because he was a wood mechanic, but more particularly becau se he had a few thousand dollars in ready money, an article which was ve ry scarce in the infant days of this firm, which has since developed in to one of the most important agricultural manufactories of the world. M r. Kelly was married, Dec. 23, 1841, to Ruth Ann, daughter of B. W. Pec k, an old resident of Springfield, having removed here from Bridgeto n, N. J., coming from Baltimore to Pittsburgh by wagon, and then on a " fl at " down the Ohio to Cincinnati, where he left his family and came on fo ot to Springfield, and, having determined to locate here, secured a team a nd brought his family. Mrs. Kelly is also a native of Clark County; was bo rn in Springfield Dec. 24, 1822. They have two children living O. W. a nd E. S. Mr. Kelly, it will be seen, commenced the battle of life at the a ge of 14 without means or friends, though he soon found the latter in M r. and Mrs. McIntire, whom he will ever gratefully remember, and by his o wn industry, frugality and energy, steadily, though at first slowly, gain ed his way to the position he now occupies as a manufacturer and citiz en of this city. Mr. Kelly, while belonging to no sect or society, gives l iberally his sympathy and support to all methods for the general good of t he city. His residence, southwest corner of South Market and Mulberry stre ets, compares favorably with the elegant homes with which this part of t he city abounds.

Message recived 9/19/2004 from Paula Oden (MPODEN@aol.com) She has no genealogy format, so it is very hard to understand who belon gs to who, so I will posted just as she sent it:

Sometimes I get confused when subtracting generations because of second f amilies and nick names and those that were so much older than the ones sti ll living. And Aunt Mildred(Erma Mildred (Oden)Guilford and youngest daug hter of Eva Jane (Roup)Oden and James Ira Oden, goes back and forth so mu ch in her memory since she has had mini strokes and a heart attack. S he is I think she said 86 now and still lives in Hale, Missouri Chariton C o. I knew the Eva Jane and James Ira lived in the (Grand) river bottoms b ut I did not know where. they lived on the property right next door to wh ere Aunt Mildred still lives. She has a farm with acreage but I would s ay the trees and creeks are still the property markers so just beyond h er tree line. According to Aunt Mildred Wilson Roup and Sharolette Appleg ate had David Wilson as child #1. #2 was Eva Jane Roup...her mom #3V iolia Wilson and he married Bert I have his last name i will just ha ve to get my note from up stairs, #4 Child was Charles, #6 LAVATIA Wils on she married Milton Odell and lived in Tina, Missouri, #7Was John WIls on. Both Charles and John ran the women and lived together. One never ma rried and one was quite old when he did marry(or maybe settled Down)O ne of Mildred's "Grand sister or Grandma's sister was a WIlson and marri ed a cousin that was a Wilson. I forgot Child #5...This was Ida Katheri ne "Cassie"Wilson and she Married and Evilsizer. Again I will have to g et my info from up stairs. She had 4 boys(I think the oldest was Fred) a nd a girl The girl died young. I have her name too but I will have to lo ok through my scribble to find it. Aunt Mildred lived with Cassie for a w hile until Violia told wrong tales to James Ira that the boys were bei ng a "Bad influence" on her. She said she was used to having boys in t he family already and they were just playing ball on the street corne rs at night. THis is all verbal according to aunt Mildred but she has co me through with the right names in connecting our other families. Paula O den

Eva Jane (Roup)married James Ira Oden. James Ira and Eva Jane had about 7 -8 kids one of which was my husbands' dad. I have a picture of her and so me of the family. Her parents were suppost to be married in Schulyer C o. Mo. Eva has a tombstone at Lakeside Cemetery in Sumner,Mo I thi nk it is CHariton Co. Within about 1 mile you Chraiton CO.,Livingston Co. and not to far from Carrol Co. and Saline Co. Sumner Mo. and Cunningham( Township and town) are less than a mile. THey look like one town. Abo ut 7-8 miles from Hale MO. Eva Jane is really buried in Ralston Oklaho ma I have the name of the cemetery upstairs. James Ira was the Son of Wil son Oden Sr. Sinda Summetie Oden was the daughter of Wilson Oden(mo ve to Oklahoma) They were very special cousins and Sinda held Eva Janes ha nd when she died. THey took Her to Oklahoma because the river bottoms we re causing lung problems but it was to late. I just found ALfred WIlson s' cemetery yesterday thanks to a Pam Baker out of Texas. He is in Colom a, Mo just about 7 miles from Hale. This was Eva Janes father . He marri ed two sisters. Charolette Applegate was Eva Jane mom. William Roup I m ay have found his parents but I have to check on it more. He may be in Sc huyler Co. or Randolph Co. He may even be at one of the 7 I walked yester day and I just not checked my list yet or I missed him. Paula Oden

Cassie was a nickname for Katherine. Most eveyone I have run into h ad a nickname. She was my father-in-law's Aunt. One of James Ira's siste rs was name for her I believe it was Zelma Oden I will have to chec k. It would Be Katherine Zelma Oden. She collected white Milkglass. I w ill have to ckeck who Zelma Married. I have just gotten back from Aunt Mi ldreds and everything in packed away and has to be put back together. Pau la Oden

When I asked aunt mildred about the family bible She thought it had been b urried with her mom in Oklahoma. She was the bible reader and the one th at kept the family together. It's the oden women that keep the family tig ht.I do believe the Roups were from Ohio. As the people on my mother-in-l aws side. It's just across the line. I am also looking for a connectio n. There is an Oden group in I think Ohio that has a child by the na me of Jessie Pearl Oden. Wilson "Buss"Oden, brother of James Ira my husban ds gr.father had like 14 children. Most died from the Flu epidemic but t wo had the name of Jessie Oden and Perlie Oden. This is to close. They h ave to be family. Last year we joined two Oden brothers born in 1834 a nd 1835 or36 (I have the date just don't remember by heart.)by one of t he pictures I have. Wilson Oden Sr. and a brother Wesley(we joined) a nd a brother Augustus(born the same year but I don't think he was a twi n, I think Atlantia Charity just got caught early again) and a sister Caro line. We cannot find any thing on Augustus or Caroline yet. But co me to find out from the picture Aunt Mildred told the story of Eva Jane (R oup)Oden having bad lungs and they moved to Oklahoma to try to save he r. Other members of the family had already moved there chasing the promi se of the RR or money in the oil fields. Wesley's youngest daughter was S inda Summetie Oden. Mildred talked of Aunt Cindy holding mom's hand as s he died. But actually Aunt Cindy was called Aunt because you didn't ca ll a elder by her first name. Aunt Cindy was actually a cousin and then s he gave me Cindy's childs name. It turned out to be Sinda and we kn ew it by the Childs name. Wilson had a brother in Oklahoma Mildred sai d. He had actually also lived in Northern Missouri where 3-4 or the ki ds were born in Triplette Mo. Wesley's bible birth and his tombstone sa id he was born in 1825. But the 2 was actually a fragmented 3 and was rec orded wrong on the tombston. Keep in mind people write sloppy and esp wi th a fountain pen or if they could write at all. I can give you Aunt Mild red's phone # She is 86 and tires easily it is 660-565-2235. Mildred Gu ilford 23525 Livingson #389 Hale,Missouri 64643-8116. If three peop le say Roup it must be Roup. I have pictures of Some of the Roup family a nd of Eva Jane and Her sister Vi. ANd of Vi's two young daughter Dessie a nd Rub HohimerThe girls died young. Paula Oden

Elihu Woolley was born in New Jersey, in 1789. Left in 1814, and settl ed in Butler County, this State. He left the latter place in 1836, settli ng in this township. He took unto himself, "for better or worse," Miss Ell en Conover in 1810 or 1811. He died in 1855 ; his wife in 1871. Of eight c hildren, but one resides in the township, at present, Charles C. This gent leman has been Township Trustee for twenty years, is an active member of t he United Brethren Church, and his hospitality is unbounded. He resid es on part of Section 36, in the western part of the township.

There is a mistaken idea out there that Elihu died in Champaign Count y. On one page of the 1881 Beers History (under Adams Township) it appea rs that Elihu sold out his land and moved to Champaign County. The paragr aph talks about Charles Woolley. However, on the page that has the sket ch of Charles Wooley in Adams Township, he clearly states that his fath er lived in Butler County, Ohio and then sold out and moved to Shelby Coun ty.

[HI53937] (Research):Rachel was listed as one of the heirs in the suit between James B. Armstro ng and John N. Leach & Others (Chancery Record Book 30, Page 553). In th is suit Rachel appears to have received an amount more than twice the amount of the other heirs. However, if she was the wid ow of Samuel B. Neal, instead of his sister, she would only be entitl ed to 1/3 of the estate and the rest of the heirs of John Neal would have split the rest; providing that Samuel Neal left no issue. The t otal distribution was $2741.60. One-third would be $913.86, yet Rachel on ly received $800.26. Rachel signed her will on 29 April 1875 and it was pr obated 21 March 1878 (Will Book D, Page 285). In her will she gives Jo hn C. Eby and his wife, Harriet E. (Twaddle) Eby half of the lot numbe rs 29 and 30 which are probably in the town of Springhills. She directs th at the land in Section 33 be sold and the money divided among the natur al heirs, that are not named. James N. Sparling and John C. Eby were the e xecutors.

On 24 June 1867 Jeptha Terrell transferred 21 and one-third acres in the s outhwest quarter and 36 acres and 124 poles in the west half of the southe ast quarter of Section 36 to Rachel (Deed Book 38, Page 563). The Administrator of Rachel transferred the 21 acres and 23 pol es to Fred Welfle on 26 September 1878 (Deed Book 53, Page 44) and t he 36 acres and 124 poles of the west half to William Crowl on the same day (Deed Book 53, page 42).

[HI53938] (Research):As Aquilla Neal, son of William Neal, did not appear to have owned any land in Champaign County this guardianship record was probably created in order to settle the esta te of William. WILLIAM NEAL OF WASHINGTON COUNTY, MARYLAND Additions and corrections have been made to a lineage produced by Mike Eng el dejeme@juno.com - Ancestry.com "Ohio Roots" last updated on 3 June 200 3; downloaded 13 August 2003. William Neal died before June 1823 in Maryla nd - In the 1816 Tax List of Champaign County, one William Neal was seiz ed of 160 acres located in the southeast quarter of Section 19 Townsh ip 5 Range 12 (Salem Township), however, the land deed index of Section 19 does not reflect this land hold ing. The land in the northeast and northwest quarters of Section 13 Townsh ip 5 Range 12 (Salem Township, about 160 acres) does appear to be the hold ings of William Neal. There is no record of his purchase, however, the lan d appeared to be held by St. Leger Neal and William's heirs made final distr ibution. Not all of the acreage appears to have deeds recorded in Champai gn County, however there are enough records to give one an understanding of the estate and some of the heirs. There are two other cou rt records that reflect upon this estate distribution: On 2 June 1823 Will iam Neal (grandson of William Neal and son of Aquilla Neal) became the gua rdian of Curtis W. The sureties were William Ross and St. Leger Beck (Cha mpaign County Guardianship Book 1, Page 56 (by Pat Stickley), Minute Bo ok 8, Page 134). Champaign County Chancery Book 16, Page 527 - Filed 21 Ap ril 1840 - Administrator of Abraham Weidman deceased vs Solomon Weidm an et al: On 29 February 1832 Edmund B. and Julet Ann Cavileer (for the he irs of St. Leger Neal) sold to Abraham Weidman, 286 acres located in the northeast and nort hwest quarters of Section 13 Township 5 Range 12 (Deed Book J, Pages 32 7- 328) except for 36 acres which had been set aside as a life estate f or the widow of William Cox. Armed with the contents of these documents t he viewing of the land deed index becomes understandable. The first land deed was a t ransfer by St. Leger Neal to William Cox on 19 June 1816 for 48 3/4 acr es of land located in the northeast quarter of Section 13 (Champaign Coun ty Deed Book C, Page 74). On the same day, William Cox transferred 14 acr es in the northwest quarter to St. Leger Neal (Deed Book C, Page 144 ). On 22 November 1821, William Cox transferred 40 acres from the south si de of the northwest quarter to Chris Kenega (Deed Book F, Page 85). As previously stated there is no original deed on file in Champaign C ounty, in the names of William Cox, St. Leger Neal nor William Neal, his f ather. St. Leger Neal appears to have died in 1816 (will signed 13 July 18 16 and other records), therefore, the rest of the land was transferr ed by other heirs of William Neal. On 22 November 1824 William Cox transfe rred 60 acres in the northwest corner of the northwest quarter to Curtis N eal (Deed Book F, Page 618) and on 23 November 1824 10 acres in the southe ast corner of the northeast quarter (Deed Book F, Page 618). On 26 Janua ry 1827 William Cox transferred a total of 98 acres located in the northea st and northwest quarters to Curtis Neal (Deed Book G, Page 444). On 13 Ma rch 1830 Curtis W. Neal transferred 10 acres and 98 acres located in the n ortheast and northwest quarters to Ed. B. Cavilier (Deed Book I, Page 210 ). On 21 March 1828 William Neal (son of Aquilla Neal and grandson of Will iam Neal) transferred his undivided interest in the northeast quarter, except 48 3/4 acres and the northwest quarter, except 14.5 acres on the ea st side, to Ed. B. Cavilier (Deed Book H, Page 272). On 31 March 1828 S t. Leger Neal (son of Henry Neal and grandson of St. Leger Neal) transferr ed his undivided interest in the same land to Ed. B. Another remarkable man, whose name is not known to the public, is that of Aquilla Dorsey, residing near Port William, Clinton county, Ohio. He is now in his ninetieth year, and has a memory almost unequalled. He remembers with distinctness when soldiers passed his fathers house near Baltimore, in order to put down the whisky insurrection in Pennsylvania in 1794-95. His grandfather, whose name also was that of Aquilla Dorsey, was in the battle familiarly called "Braddocks Defeat" July 9th1755. He was a former citizen of this county and lived in the Grafton settlement, on the Strother Smith farm, in 1818., when his father died. His only living brother is Mr. Silas Dorsey, a resident of Palestine, Shelby county, now in his eighty-seventh year. They are both uncles of

We take from the Champaign Democrat the following account of Aquiila Dorse y, who was ~r many years a prominent citizen of Shelby county. AquillaDorsey died at his home Bowersville, Green Co., July 13, 1887, at t he age of 97 years 7 months and 8 days. He was the son of Charles Dors ey a Revolutionary soldier, who came from Hampshire county, Virginia, to t his county in 1810. The family first settled on the farm of the late Benja min Gard, of Madriver township, and afterwards on the Zerkle farm near t he Hill grave yard, Jackson township, where the head of the family, Charl es Dorsey, died July 14, 1811. The family was living in the Zerkie hou se at the time of the earthquake, December 11, 1811, when the house came v ery nearly being destroyed. They subsequently came to Salem township and l ived a few years on the farm recently owned by Rev. S. F. Conrey. In 18 18 they went to Green township, Shelby township, where the family gr ew to the years of maturity. There were four brothers, John, Aquilla, Sila s, and Charles whose names will long be cherished in the community where t hey lived. The sisters were Mary, who married David LaRue; Eunice who marr ied Robert McFarland; and Sarah, who married Isaac Conroy; and Anna who di ed single. Aquilla, the subject of the sketch was a man of remarkable endurance. Eig ht times, since he came to Ohio, and before the days of the railroad s, we walked to Baltimore and back, and even walked the ninth time from he re to Baltimore, but came back by public conveyance. The writer has hea rd him relate an encounter with a pack of wolves while crossing the Allegh eny mountains in the night. He was born in Anne, Arundel county, Md., D ec 5, 1789. In 1827, he went to Green county, where he married Sarah Stilh ings, and after her death he married a widow Barnheart, and continued to r eside on the same farm for a period of sixty years., .The remains of his f ather lie in the Grafton cemetery, Jackson township...

[HI54044] (Research):Champaign County Early Settlers by CCGS Vol 2
Pg 136 "Joseph Coffey believed to be First Settler in Catawba"
1808-1820 - So far I have mentioned early settlements in the neighborhood close to Catawba. A few years later, say 1808 to 1820 this neighborhood was further augumented by Nathaniel Cartmell, Daniel Wren, Peter Arbogast, Simon Ropp, Jeremiah Curl...........
Pg 141 "Yeazell Family One of Largest to Settle"
Of the many large and well known families that settled in Pleasant Township and Moorefield Township, the Yeazells are no doubt one of the larger ones in number. Abraham Yeazell, born about 1770 in Virginia, married in the year 1794 Miss Mary Curl, who was also born in Virginia and a daughter of William Curl. William Curl, Abraham Yeazell, Joseph Runyan, Andrew Bumgardner, George Runyan... all settled in the vicinity of Asbury Chapel between 1802 and 1810. Most , if not all, of these men were originally from Maryland-Virginia region of the Potomac and Shenandoah River valleys. Some settled for a tome in what is now West Virginia, others abided for a while in Kentucky, but all were strivin to reach the Ohio Country. William Curl lived sometime in Kentucky, and while there he was a member of General Clark's expeditions against the Shawnee Indians in Greene, Champaign and Logan Counties. William Curl was born in 1754 and in 1776 was united in marriage to Sarh Brown, who was a cousin connection of the George Washington family. William Curl and wife lived in Clinton County, Clark, Champaign and finally, Logan County, where they each passed away. He died in 1841 and she in 1826. Both are buried in Mount Olive Cemetery, DeGraff, OH.
They raised a family of evelen children, including Mary, the wife of Abraham Yeazell; Elizabeth the wife of Joseph Davisson; ____ the wife of Isaac Davisson; Jeremiah Curl married Margaret Swisher; William Curl Jr married Nany Ann Ellsworth. William was an ordained minister of the Methodist Church, and Isaac Curl married Nancy Dawson. These six left scores of descendants in this and adjacent territory. I am not familiar with the marriage record of the other five children.Abraham and Mary Curl Yeazell settled first in Clinton County but in 1810 they moved to then Champaign County, settling a little southwest of Asbury Cemetery just over the line in Moorefield Township in the Sinking Creek area. There were fourteen children born to this couple, ten of which were sons, thus accounting for the numerous descendants of the Yeazell family.
Pg 143 WILLIAM CURL FAMILY
«tab»It appears to me that almost every family that I have enumerated in Pleasant
Township, has some members in it that trace back to William Curl family. The same is true in Champaign County. I have seen that same reference many times in this county.
I have noted that there is disagreement about where William and Mary Curl are buried. One account states they are both buried at Mt. Olive Cemeter, near DeGraff in Logan County, and another account states she died sometime before him and was buried at Asbury, Clark County. He then went to Logan County, died there at the home of one of his sons, and was buried at Mt. Olive. I can't say which is correct.

There is also a stone in Upper Honey Creek Cemetery for William
The Evergreen Cemetery Burial records do not include a burial record for William, but the date is before they were required. As of this date, it is not known which cemetery he is buried in.
I would recommend someone reviewing to verify if any actual burial records exist for Upper Honey Creek for him.
It is apparent there are two markers in two different cemeteries for the same child.
