[HI52299] (Research):Early Settlers of Champaign Co, OH -pg 55 and 56 and 57

During the period of 1800 to 1805, there were probably as many as fifty fa milies who settled in Champaign county, mostly near the central part. L et us take one of these families as a typical example and see what happene d. The head of our mythical family will be called Haines. He was born in 1 750, in the state of New Jersey. He migrated with his parents to Pennsylva nia where he married. His family consisted of seven children. About 1790 the Haines family migra ted to Kentucky where they resided unti1 1804. In 1797, Haines's eldest da ughter married a Kentuckian, a native of Virginia. Haines was a veter an of the Revolution and Indian warfare. For his services he received a la nd grant of two hundred fifty acres in Virginia Military Survey in Union t ownship. In the spring of 1804, Haines, then fifty-four years of age, deci ded to take possession of his land grant in Ohio. The entire family, inclu ding his daughter and son-in-Iaw with two little children, made up the mig ration party. They crossed the Ohio river at Cincinnati and started nor th with a two-horse wagon which contained their few household furnishin gs and a meager amount of farm tools. The women and small children manag ed to find a seat on the wagon. The men and three of the larger children w alked. Two cows, haltered to the wagon brought up the rear. The road to Da yton was in good shape for spring The fifty mile stretch was covered witho ut mishap in five days.

A New Settler Arrives

Upon reaching Dayton a change in weather took place. A two-day rain s et in and they were compelled to tarry at Dayton four days. Dayton peop le cautioned them that the road from Dayton to Springfield would be in b ad condition because of the heavy rain. This they found was only too tru e. The road was nothing more than a dirt road. The narrow tread of their w agon wheels sank in the moist earth to such an extent that they had to st op often and rest the tired horses. They did well to make five mil es in a day's time. Exactly three weeks from the day they left their home in Kentucky they arr ived in the little town of Springfield. Springfield had been settled in 1799 by James Dement. By 1804 it contain ed several houses, one of which was that of Simon Kenton, who resid ed in a cabin on what is now Lagonda avenue.

Haines and Kenton were old friends, both having been with general Clark wh en he destroyed the Indian town ofPiqua near Springfield. Kenton suggest ed that Haines leave his family in Springfield where he, Haines and his so n-in-Iaw went on horseback to locate his tract of land and plan the best w ay to reach it. Kenton told them there was a pretty fair road up Mad River valley to whe re Ward and Vance were planning to layout the town of Urbana. (Urbana w as platted in 1805). The following day the three horsemen started up the M ad River valley. The road followed the brow ofa line ofhills. There w as a solid wall offorest on both sides of the road. After going for abo ut nine miles Kenton suggested they turn east and climb the hill. He sa id by doing so they could cross a treeless prairie to within a few mil es of the Haines tract. It was a good five miles across this wild grass pr airie before they reached heavy timber. Dismounting from their horses t he two men began cutting a road into the forest. Kenton went ahead and mar ked the trees along the best and easiest route to follow. They were thr ee days cutting and clearing a roadway to the spot where Haines chose f or locating his cabin. It was on a hill overlooking a valley to the east a nd south. While gazing over the treetops Kenton pointed out the cabi ns of Abner Barrett, John Runyan, Joseph McLain and the two Minturn boys B arton and Allen. These five would be neighbors of the Haines family. Barre tt was closest, the others from one to two miles distant. The Haines cab in and their manner of life will be described in the next article.

The Pioneer Cabin 1804 February 23, 1957 {Continuation of hypothetical his tory of a typical settler named "Haines")

Although the settlers' cabins were few and far between, the news that a n ew family had arrived in the neighborhood soon became knowledge. Abner Bar rett appeared on the scene with his ax and grubbing hoe and assisted in cl earing the roadway to the Haines tract. John Runyan also came from acro ss Buck Creek. Runyan and Barrett both insisted that Haines bring the fami ly members who were remaining at Springfield to the Barrett and Runyan hom es where they would be sheltered until Haines could get trees cut and lo gs prepared for the erection ofhis cabin.

A week elapsed, Haines, his son-in-Iaw, with the assistance of five oth er neighbor men felled the trees and partially hewed enough logs for a twe nty foot square cabin. On the appointed day soon after sun-up, the men fr om over Kingscreek way, even over on Mad River, began to arrive. One man w ho was adept at cabin construction was selected and made overseer. It w as his duty to assign each man some particular work which he should perfor m. Some were assigned to bring the logs to the cabin location. Others we re appointed to dress and hew the logs, four men were assigned, one at ea ch comer to cut and trim the ends of the logs so that each fit perfect ly in its appointed place. This was a most exacting task and only a skill ed man could do it. Others were assigned to cut out the door and window a nd an opening for the fireplace. Still others split clapboards for the roo f. These were split out of straight-grained white oak logs, each board bei ng four to five feet in length and less than an inch in thickness. They we re used in the roof, not nailed, but held down by small logs placed cross- wise. The open spaces between the logs were filled with straight stic ks or wood called chinks and plastered firmly with mortared clay. For a fi replace a space usually about six feet in length was cut out of the logs a nd three sides were built up of logs, making an offset in the wall. This w as lined with stone. The flue or upper part of the chimney was built of sm all split sticks two and a half to three feet in length, carried a litt le distance above the roof and plastered throughout with clay.

This whole outfit was a firetrap. It was not uncommon for a cabin to be de stroyed by burning. The door was made of split boards like the clapboar d. Secured by wooden pins to two cross-pieces, the hinges were also of wo od while the fastening consisted of a wooden latch catching on a hook of t he same material. To open the door from the outside a strip of buckskin w as tied to the latch and passed through a hole to the outside. To open y ou pulled the string and the latch was lifted from the hook. To lock the d oor it was only necessary to pull the string on the inside. The window, wh ich was never very large was covered with greased paper. The floor was som etimes just plain dirt, otherwise it was made of split halflogs with the s mooth side turned upward. Their cabin completed, the Haines family moved i n. The combined families totaled twelve members, too many for a twen ty by twenty home, so a second cabin was built on another part of the fa rm for the married daughter and her family. Here in his humble cabin ho me the John Haines family lived, eight people in all, and here they were j ust as free to welcome a guest or wayfarer as the neighboring pioneers h ad welcomed them

The living room was of good size but it had to serve as kitchen, bedroom a nd guest room as well. There were no dividing walls. Homemade sheets we re sometimes hung from the loft to give the sleeping quarters a little pri vacy. An itinerant preacher who at one time served at the Buck Creek churc h, told of his ordeal and embarrassment in preparing for the bed assign ed to him, in the presence ofhis host's family and the bright light of t he fireplace filling the room. The morning baths were taken at a trough ne ar the spring at the foot of the hill on which the house stood. In the win tertime when it was too cold for an outdoor bath I suspect the operation w as performed with a pan of warm water on a stool in a corner of the livi ng room. Maybe a sheet served as privacy or possibly the bather just turn ed his back.

[HI52300] (Research):JUDIAH HAINES, retired farmer; P. O. North Lewisburg. The above gentlem an is another of the old and once active settlers in this locality. He w as born in New Jersey in 1812, and is a son of Benjamin and Ann Haine s. At the time his parents came to Ohio, he was only 8 years old. Comparat ively speaking, the country was a wilderness, and young Jadiah had a fu ll share of the hardships and privations to con tend against. He remain ed with his parents until his 24th year, after which he began life for him self, on 82 acres of land, which was mostly in the green woods. By di nt of hard labor, all obstructions were removed, and his land became impro ved and valuable. Here he made his home until 1865, the time of his remov al to North Lewisburg. He is another of our self-made men, having begun li fe empty-handed; yet, through years of toil, he has accomplished the gre at object in life-made a good home, in which he is enjoying the hard-earn ed fruits of his labor. In 1836, he was married to Maria Taylor, by wh om he has had eight children; seven living-Hannah, Elizabeth, Samuel, Ma ry M.; Elnora, Maria and Charles; Sarah J., deceased.Mr. and Mrs. Haines a re members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, with which they have been co nnected for half a century, a length of time man and wife seldom live to l abor together in the cause of Christ. They are exemplary Christian peopl e, and are zealous workers in the church. Mrs. Haines is a daughter of Sta cy and Elizabeth Taylor, natives of New Jersey, and early settlers in Warr en Co., Ohio, afterward residents of Logan Co., Ohio. Her father died in S t. Louis, Mo., upward of 75 years of age; the mother, when past middle ag e. They were parents of twelve children, of whom only Mrs. Haines is kno wn to be living..

[HI52430] (Research):JOHN MAST, retired farmer; P. O. Urbana; born in Pennsylvania Oct. 29, 179 3; is a son of Jacob and Barbara (Kenaga) Mast, natives of Pennsylvania. T he paternal grandfather was a native of Switzerland, coming to America wh en about 10 years of age. He lived and died in Pennsylvania. Jacob and Bar bara also lived and died in Pennsylvania, and were parents of seven childr en; three now survive-John, Isaac and Leah. Our subject, living with his f ather till his majority, was raised to farm labors, and married, Dec. 4, 1 823, to Elizabeth, daughter of Eli and Mary Trego, natives of Pennsylvani a. They had nine children; seven now survive-Phineas P., Miriam, Ann, Eliz abeth, Joseph K., John Emery and Ephraim M. After their marriage, they res ided in Pennsylvania about seven years, then went to Ohio, locating on t he farm where he has since resided, having now made a residence here of ha lf a century. When Mr. Mast came to this county, he had but little capita l, but bought a quarter-section of land at $10 per acre, and went in de bt to quite an extent for his land, farm implements and stock to begin far ming. This was in the days when wheat, by hauling it over the mud roa ds to Dayton, would bring 33 cents per bushel. It took hard labor and clo se economy to get along, but he faithfully labored, and brought his land i nto good cultivation. The country improved, grain and produce brought bett er prices, and Mr. Mast prospered. He purchased more land, and his weal th increased till he became owner of 320 acres of land as good as can be f ound. His children grew to maturity, and he has apportioned to them the mo st of his land, reserving 65 acres for himself. He erected a fine, comfort able house, and is now residing there, retired from active labor to spe nd the balance of his life in quiet and rest. His children are all settl ed in life and doing well. The eldest son, P. P. Mast, of the fi rm of P. P. Mast & Co., of Springfield, Ohio, has built up an extensive bu siness in the manufacture of agricultural implements, being known all ov er the country, and their machines and implements sold in nearly every Sta te in the Union and many parts of Europe. This family is one of the ear ly settlers of this county, and one whose life and labors stand promine nt in the history and improvements of the county. Mr. Mast has been a popu lar man and a good neighbor; a kind of peacemaker, having been the mea ns of compromising many difficulties between neighbors, and has always tak en an active interest in churches and schools. He was School Director f or forty-three years, a Class-leader in the M. E. Church fifty-four year s, and Steward and Trustee for forty-eight years. His life has been o ne of labor and usefulness, and, when his labors are ended, the church a nd people will lose a faithful man.

[HI52434] (Research):Champaign Democrat March 14, 1913 Urbana Lady Recalls Early Days in Salem Mrs. Stewart Attended First School and Church.

Remembers Old Instine Tavern, and the Days Before the Indians Had Left Cou nty.

There are only a few pioneers of the early days left, but Mrs. Anna K. Ste wart, of South Main Street, can distinctly remember attending the first sc hool ever taught in Salem township, and also was a member of the first chu rch in the township.

The school house was built on what was then known as the Byers farm, on t he south side of the creek at the south edge of Kingscreek, in the year 18 31. It was of a very primitive style, being only about twelve feet squar e, and the ceiling was only high enough that the pupil could stand up und er it. The seats and desks were of hewn logs, shaped out by the axe for us e. The first teacher was a man by the name of St. Clair, who believed in t he maxim, “Spare the rod and spoil the child,” and a large bunch of bee ch switches could always be seen hanging on the wall. The teacher s at on a split-bottom chair, which was thought to be a great luxury of th at day. There were four small windows in the building, with only a small p ane of glass in each window to admit the light.

The first church was built just across the creek from the school, about fo ur years later, and was the old-time Methodist denomination, The creek mar ked the boundary of two claims, and the church was on what was then kno wn as the Taylor claim. The church was built of hewn logs and the chin ks were filled up with clay. The settlers came in rapidly, and bet ween 1835 and 1840 a tavern was built by Mike Instine north of Urbana ab out three and one-half miles, and southwest of Kingscreek about a mile a nd a halt About that time the remnants of a peaceful tribe of Indians p itched theft tents across the road from the tavern, and were a sour ce of wonder to all the new settlers. Mrs. Stewart was a daughter of Jo hn Mast who came from Lancaster, Pa., to Salem township 83 years ago, wh en she was but six months of age. Mr. Mast is thought to be the first se ttler in Salem township.

Urbana Daily Times Citizen March 30, 1905 Youngest Civil War Veteran in the State is the Claim Of William Locust Tay lor of This City -~ Enlisted When He Was Only Fourteen

Just forty years ago Friday at Petersburg, Wi!ham Locust Taylor, of this c ity, shed his blood in defense of his country. He was wounded in the fig ht which took place at that point and to this day he carries the mark of t hat conflict.

Mr. Taylor called at the Times Citizen office Thursday morning and narrat ed the circumstances, and at the same time made claim to being the younge st living veteran of the civil war in this city, county or state. He was b orn on the 11th day of March, 1850, being less than a month past 55 yea rs of age. He enlisted at Tiffin in Company D, 123rd 0. V. I. on the 30 th day of January, 1864, being at that time 43 days less than 14 yea rs of age. He was mustered out at Sandusky at the close of the war, Cap t. Steiner being the mustering officer.

The first battle in which this boy-soldier took part was that at New Marke t, Va. His next important encounter was at Piedmont. Then he was in the ba ttle of Lynchburg and soon after was at Smucker s Ferry. Then followed t he Petersburg engagement in which he was wounded.

Mr. Taylor still possesses that patriotic feeling for his country and he n ever lets an opportunity to demonstrate the fact slip by. Mr. Taylor is " 55 years young" and he wants to know if there is a younger veteran livi ng in the city or county.

Mr. Taylor is now living in Gwynne street, having removed to this city fr om Concord township.

[HI52847] (Research):Birthdate may have been 21 Feb, 24 Feb OR 24 Apr 1769. Hannah may have be en born on 12 Feb 1788, in Suffolk County, NY. The plentyful supply of Con klings' in the Harper's Ferry, VA (now WV) and later in Champaign-Clark Co unty area, with an excess of Jacobs and an Ananias or two, makes it seem m ost probable that the West-Conkling nuptials occurred right there in north western VA (now WV).

THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS. ADDITIONAL RESEARCH IS REQUIRED TO CONFIRM NAM ES, BIRTHPLACE & BIRTHSDATES OF HANNAH'S PARENTS. A Query appeared in the Boston Transcript, dated 4 April 1934, "CONKLIN-BA RNES. Hannah Conklin, born February 24, 1769 in New York State, the daught er of Jacob Conklin and Margaret Barnes; married February 12, 1789, Willi am West, and died March 1, 1839 in Champaign County, OH. Wanted, the ances try of Jacob Conklin and Margaret Barnes and birthplace of Hannah Conklin. " The 1881 History of Champaign County, mentions a Ralph Robinson, the seco nd settler of Harrison Township, Champaign County, was a Virginian. He to ok unto himself a wife in the person of Miss Hannah Conklin. It is probab ly that this was the first marriage solemized in the Township. (1) Marion E. West, P.O. [HI52880] (Research): Republic, Springfield, OH on Sunday, October 3, 1886

(Editor: We do not know the correct date for this woman's death other th an it was in the year 1886). In the year 1886, In memory of a prominent Pi oneer.. on last Friday afternoon quite a large number of the people of Tre mont City and its vicinity witnessed the final ceremonies attending the bu rial of one of their oldest pioneers, Mary M. ROCKEL, or as she was more c ommonly known within the last few years, Aunt Polly ROCKEL, was the daught er of Phillip and Elizabeth BAKER and the relict of Adam ROCKEL, who di ed two years ago at an advanced age of 90 years. She was born in Shenando ah Co., VA in 1810 and was at her death in her 76th year. In 1813 with h er father's and grandfather's family, she came to Clark County, where abo ut half-mile west of Eagle City Mills, in German township, her grandfathe r, Phillip BAKER purchased several hundred acres of, at that time, wild a nd unbroken land. At that time Springfield was but a struggling hamlet wi th half a dozen houses an the now beautiful Mad River Valley was the va st wilderness of woods, brush and water. The pioneer's cabin was sometim es not to be seen for miles. Indians were a not uncommon sight, and wild a nimals of all kins were roaming through the woods. At one time she was se nt to look for the cows, and came across a she bear with two cubs, not kno wing what they were she passed very close to them thinking them to be dog s, but they did her no harm. Her school facilities were very small and h er education somewhat limited, but she was a considerable reader. In 182 7, the Rev. John PENCE, now dead, held a revival at Lawrenceille to whi ch she attended, usually walking, it being some 2 or 3 miles. Here she att ached herself to the German Reformed church and remained a member until h er death, 59 years. In 1829 she married Adam ROCKEL, when she moved on t he old ROCKEL homestead, one mile south of Tremont, where she resided f or 55 years, until the death of her husband, since which time she has be en living with her son, Peter ROCKEL, in Moorefield Township. She was a re markable strong and jolly woman and always took great pride in visiting h er neighbors and lending a helping hand whenever needed, and old age did n ot seem to change her in this respect, there being very few social gatheri ng of any kind in the neighborhood within the last few years which has n ot had her presence. Quite a large number of relatives survive her, her fa mily being a remarkably healthy one. She had but five children, Peter, Hen ry and William and Mary E. COLLINS and Harriet SHAWVER, all of whom survi ve with families and all live within the vicinity of Tremont City except W illiam, who lives near Bloomington, Ill. For the space of 55 years there w as no death in her family, Mrs. Sheriff BAKER is her cousin and Willi am M. ROCKEL, Esq., of this city, her grandson. In her day and generati on she was a good and useful woman, and the work of her charitable hands h ave often lightened other's burdens even to a self sacrifice. Although hav ing lived, beyond the allotted age, the social circle will miss her pleasa nt presence.

From Marilyn Jensen 11/15/2008
I don't know when Emma ARGABRIGHT McJILTON died. By 1910 census Edward had been married (for 4 years) and20living in Wabash Co. IN. His parents James and Susan remained in Clark Co until their deaths and in 1910 had a grandson, Hyland McJILTON age 7 living with them. He still lived with them in 1920 and they both died not long after that. I don't know what happened to Hyland. James and Susan only had one son so looks like Hyland was the son of Emma. I must not have found a birth record to comfirm this.
FAmily file on ancestry has that Emma died November 8, 1903 and they had two chidlren Stuart Hylan McJilton born January 24, 1902 and Donald born October 28, 1903 and died November 7, 1903 I have written to the submitter to see if there are any sources. I'll let you know. I did find a SSDI for Stuart in Florida (obtained in Ohio) and a Florida death record for him (Stuart Hylan McJilton so should be one and the same)
