At one time while taking hogs. East, he was struck by a switch engi ne in Cleveland, and severely injured, having his hip badly broken, whi ch has since made him a cripple. He has a well-improved and productive farm of 200 acres, the res ult of his industry and economy; he has not always had smooth sailing, fo r, besides the above misfortune, he was robbed of $1,150 on the cars ne ar New Albany, on his return after a sale of sheep, and altogether in h is stock operations he has lost about $5,000, including a security de bt of $300. [HI51868] (Research):SAMUEL W. HITT, merchant. Among the present prominent business men of Urba na, Mr. Hitt deserves more than a passing notice. About the year 1814, t wo brothers, Martin and Samuel Hitt, both Methodist ministers, came from V irginia and purchased a section of land which they divided between them, a nd most of which now lies within the present. bounds of Urbana. Our subje ct is the son of Samuel Hitt, and the only male representative of these fa milies now residing in this county. He was born in 1817, and has always re sided here. At the age of 15, he entered the store of Judge John Reynold s, and, by dint of industry, integrity and remarkable business talent, pas sed successively through the stages of apprentice and clerk, and in 1852 b ecame a partner in the firm of Ross, Hitt & Co. After the decease of Mr. R eynolds, in 1857, the firm was Ross & Hitt. In 1866, Mr. Ross retired, a nd the business was conducted solely by Mr. Hitt. Thus had he risen from s tore-boy to partner and proprietor of the leading and oldest dry goods hou se of Urbana (it having been establisbed by Mr. Reynolds about 1806). M r. Hitt's success is the best compliment that can be given to his energy a nd business management. He has always been a generous, public-spirited cit izen, and has done more, perhaps, than any other one person in Urbana f or the support of the Methodist Episcopal Church, of which he is an honor ed and worthy member. He was married, in 1843, to Miss Sallie B., daught er of Joseph White. They have had five children-Joseph, killed in actio n, as a soldier in the 66th O. V. I.; Anna, now Mrs. John T. Mitchell; Geo rge, now in charge of the branch store at Bellefontaine; Lizzie and Mar y. The present style of the firm is Hitt, White & Mitchell, and their pla ce of business is located on the corner of Main street and Monument Squar e.

«b»Former Resident Dead
Typhoid Fever Causes the Death of
Albert Anderson in Kansas

«/b»Word was received Saturday announcing the death of Albert Anderson of Chanute, Kansas, of typhoid fever, He was 73 years of age and was a former resident of this county and a brother of Mrs. S. B. Price and Mrs. Ambrose Hullinger of this city.

[HI51956] (Research):JOSEPH ANDERSON, farmer; P. O. Urbana. The father of Mr. Anderson emigrat ed to this county in 1825; his name was John, and he was born in Page Co ., Va.; his wife's maiden name was Nancy Lower; they were married in Virgi nia, and their bridal tour was taken, Mrs. Anderson riding a horse and Jo hn walking by its side, until their arrival in Clark Co., in 1825; their b eginning in life was one of the hardest; having no money, they were oblig ed to shift as best they could; John frequently worked for 12 1/2 cents p er day ; this manner of living was continued for eight years, when they co ncluded to look for a better location; he had saved a small sum during th is time, and, being of an energetic sort, he determined to have a home , h is little cash was invested as part payment for 160 acres of land, upon wh ich was a little cabin, with perhaps an acre cleared; the first work w as in building a comfortable log house, after which, clearing up the la nd was continued, until a large portion was, in a few years, under cultiva tion; children grew up around them, and the eldest were able to aid very m uch in the work; Maria and William were born in Clark Co.; Betsy, James, A lbert, Joseph, Mary, Angeline, Susan and Louisa. were born on the farm n ow owned by Joseph, our subject; eight of these children are living. Prosp erity seemed to dawn on John and his wife from the date of their comi ng to this county; their stock throve wonderfully, and their crops were go od, and he was always ready to meet the payments on his land as they ca me due; his energy was remarkable, and his success was such that, at one t ime, he owned 1,500 acres of land, and was possessor of 360 acres at the t ime of his death, which occurred in 1877; his widow resides in Urbana. M r. Anderson dealt largely in stock, and made much of his wealth in this wa y; he served, during the war of 1812, fourteen months; we are not ab le to state under whose command. Joseph was married to Mary Overhuls er in 1865; they have, by their marriage, three children-Annie, Harv ey A. and Charles; by his first wife, he was the father of Isaac, Erastu s, George, Wiley, Jasper and Elmer; Mary and Elizabeth are not living. M r. Anderson purchased the old home farm in 1877, and is very comfortably s ituated, having a productive farm, and is one of our enterprising men ; h is wife also represents a family who were pioneers of Ohio, but they di ed during her girlhood. Mr. Anderson devotes his time to agricultural purs uits, the rearing of stock, etc.; he owns 190 acres of land, on which a re several of the finest springs in the township; he is a Republican of t he substantial sort-a rarity among residents of this township.

[HI52020] (Research):I did not enter Martha's mother -- some feel she was the daughter of Charo lette maiden name unknown. However, the 1850 census indicates John and Ch arolette were married within the year, also her child Oliver L. Jordan's D eath Certificate indicates his mother's maiden name was Pitzer and a retur ned certificate indicates someone entered the name Mary.) I thought that our John had married Charolette Pitzer, but some of the Pit zer researchers DID NOT agree! I still think that is a good possibility a nd believe that Oliver's death certificate is a good source. The person w ho furnished the name Pitzer was his wife, who gave the name Mary on t he returned cert.? I shall take a close look at the dates on my records a nd submit another request for the marriage certificate. I had assumed th at some sort of record was available since this date was referred to in so me documents I had researched. The answer I have gotten a number of tim es is the courthouse burned. mbollinger@eatel.net Marvel Bollinger Delaha ye

C. W. COVALT, livery, St. Paris. In speaking of the business industri es of St. Paris, the stable of C. W. Covalt deserves a liberal menti on in this work. He is a native of Miami Co., Ohio ; was raised to farm li fe, and had all opportunities of becoming acquainted with horses. He has b een engaged in the livery trade in St. Paris since 1873, and is locat ed on South Springfield street. Here be has everything neatly and comforta bly arranged ; be does not aim to keep as large a supply of horses as ci ty liverymen, but what he has are among the best, as are also his carriage s, buggies and funeral hacks. Mr. Covalt is a live young man in his busine ss, and merits a good patronage. His first wife was Nannie Rollfe, to wh om he was married in 1860. Twelve years later she died, leaving one son-Le wis F. Mr. Covalt married for his second wife Sarah J. White, a nati ve of Champaign Co., Ohio.
