[HI50526] (Research):Beers History of Clark Co, OH pg 984 JAMES CLARK, capitalist, New Moorefield. A descendant of two old pioneer f amilies of Clark Co.; was born in this county Nov. 21, 1838, a son of Jo hn D. and Susannah (Foley) Clark, he a native of Virginia; and she of Ohi o, and a grandson of James Clark, also born in Virginia, but who beca me an early settler of Clark Co., and afterward of Champaign Co., whe re he resided until death. The maternal grandfather, James Foley, also a n ative of Virginia, became one of the early pioneers of Clark Co., locating -here about 1803 or 1805, while the Indians were still the principal occup ants of the then almost unbroken forest, when there was but one store in S pringfield, and four or five houses constituted the town. In this county l ie spent the remainder of his life. Although possessed of only a limited e ducation, from the meager advantages of schools in those days, yet he poss essed great natural talent, and was a very active and powerful man, both p hysically and intellectually. He became thoroughly known and held the resp ect acid confidence of the people; was chosen a representative to the Sta te Legislature two terms, and served his constituents faithfully. We may s afely believe that had he in his early life possessed the advantages of o ur present generation, he would have arisen to distinction. John D. Cla rk came to this county with his parents when but a child ; was raised to f arm labor, grew to manhood, was married and located upon the farm whe re he still lives and has resided during his entire business life. He h as been a man of great activity, and has not confined himself to the me re routine of farm labor, but his mind carried him into a more active fiel d, that of an extensive stock dealer. For thirty years he did a large trad e, buying through this country and the west as far as Illinois, driving la rge droves of cattle to Philadelphia and the Eastern markets, often throwi ng into market from two to three thousand head of cattle in a single yea r; has also dealt extensively in wool and pork, in all of which he was gen erally successful, as known by the fact that, in 1870, when he retired fr om business, he was worth over $200,000, which was mostly made by his o wn labor, skill and good management, which is perhaps a record of succe ss surpassed by but very few in that day, or even since. In 1872, he h ad a stroke of paralysis, from which he has never fully recovered, althoug h, physically, he still enjoys good health for one of his advanced age. H is wife died May 8, 1876. Of an issue of four children, there were three d aughters and one son-Mary C. (now Mrs. Pratt), Martha J. (now Mrs. R. A. C alvert, of Portsmouth, Ohio, whose husband now is Judge of the Court of th at county), James, and Anna E. (now Mrs. W. M. Yeazell, of Springfield). O ur subject, being an only son, has always remained with his father and ass isted him in his business, and grew up with the advantages and observatio ns of his father's plans and successes in business, and as his father adva nced in years James gradually took the care and charge of his business aff airs, till 1870, when his father retired from active life, since whi ch he has taken the entire control and management. Mr. Clark is engag ed in raising and dealing in a moderate yet profitable degree in trotti ng horses ; has raised some of the finest. horses in Clark Co.; has rais ed and trained horses which he has sold at prices as high as $20,000, a nd is justly recognized as one of the leading men in this line of busine ss in this portion of Ohio. The Clark farm consists of 657 acres of most e xcellent land in a high state of cultivation, with fine and substantial bu ildings, with every arrangement for convenience and comfort, and is o ne of the best grain and stock farms in Clark Co. Mr. Clark is well kno wn not only in his county, but his reputation extends far and wide through out the country among all the prominent men who are interested devote es in fine horses; has been an active member of the Clark County Boa rd of Agriculture for six years; has held various township offices, a nd is now Township Treasurer, which office he has held for eight years .. He was married, Jan. 20, 1870, to Miss Emma, S., only child of Charl es and Mary (Taylor) Morgan, he a native of England and she of Ohio, b ut of English descent. Two children have been the fruits of this union, o ne of whom is living-Emerson Eugene Clark. Mr. Clark is one of the most pl easant and affable gentlemen it has been our good fortune to have met wi th in the county.. He is an educated, well-read man, who keeps apace wi th the progress and development of the age; a man imbued with a proper spi rit of liberality, taking an active interest in everything tending to t he general welfare of his native county, of which he is a worthy and high ly respected citizen.

[HI50530] (Research):. Hugh V SMITH farmer was born on Jan 30 1796 in Clark Co., Virginia. He w as buried in May 1855 in Deal Cemetery, Salt Rock Twp., Marion Co., Ohi o. He died on May 18 1855 in Salt Rock Twp., Marion Co., Ohio. The fami ly tradition says that he was born in Virginia but in the 1860 US Cens us he gave his birth place as Pennsylvania. Harley Smith believes that Hu gh V. Smith's fathers name was John, this has not been verified. That wi ll be a mystery for the future to solve. Hugh V. had at least 3 brother s, David, Robert and William. David came to Marion Co. in 1830, but remov ed further west to Lima Township, LaGrange County, Indiana. Hugh mentio ns in his diary visiting with David in Indiana.

LAGRANGE COUNTY, INDIANA HISTORY. One of the sons John Smith, is subje ct of this section. He is widely known as a successful farmer, and has giv en particular attention to the improvement of live stock. It is owing to h is efforts and of others like him that such great strides have been ma de in the live stock interests of the county. Mr. Smith was born in Cla rk County, Ohio Oct 24, 1823. He was married to Sarah R. Parker in 1855, w ho died in 1857, leaving one child, Sarah A. In 1862 he was married to Ser ence Craig, and they have two children Mary J. and Charles C.

EXCERPTS FROM MARION COUNTY COURT RECORDS.

John Seaburn son of William and Nancy A. Rawles Seaburn. Hugh V. Smith w as appointed guardian of Nancy Rawles in Marion County, Ohio.

Herbert H. Smith of Lima Township, son of Hugh (son of David Smith) and Na ncy Smith born Sept 14, 1861.

Hugh V. Smith visited his brother at least once in the 1840's, as record ed in his diary. David Smith married Mary Gossard August 22, 1819 in Cla rk County, Ohio.

William Smith married Hugh V's wife's sister Catharina Yeazel, December 2 7, 1828 in Clark County, Ohio. He also came to Marion County but didn't re main.

Robert Smith also came to Marion County and did own land in the county, b ut finally left.

Hugh V. lived for sometime in Clark County, but it is not known if his par ents ever lived in Clark County. It is possible in that so many of his bro thers lived in the county. Little is known of Hugh V. during this peri od of his life. The date of his arrival in Marion County range from 18 20 to 1823. It is known for sure that he was in Salt Rock township by 182 3. He purchased his first property from his brother-in-law William Yeaz el September 7, 1823, Section 29 Township 4 Range 14, 80 acres. His father -in-law had made several purchases of real estate in western Marion Coun ty prior to this time. It is possible that Hugh V. was on the property dev eloping it for his father-in-law. Hugh V. continued to add to this orgin al purchase through out his life time. There are several recorded patien ts from U.S. Government in his name. Most of the holdings were in Grand to wnship and Salt Rock township, but at the time of his death he did own app roximatily 600 acres in Claridon township. This property was later own ed by Alexander Sims and Fanny Smith Sims. The property was sold at the ti me Alex and Fannie removed to Iowa. Sarah "Sally" Yeazel(PEDIGREE) and (PH OTO)was born February 24, 1798 in Hampshire County, Virginia now West Virg inia the daughter of Abrahma Yeazel and Mary Curl, natives of Virginia. Ab raham was born Apr 29, 1774 in Virginia and died Jan 2, 1832 in Moorefie ld Townhship, Clark County, Ohio. Mary Curl was born October 30, 1776 in V irginia and died Sep. 22, 1828 in Moorefield Township. She was the daught er of William Curl and Sarah "Sally" Brown. She was the daughter of Thom as Brown and Mary Ball. The Yeazel Family has a family tree showing Mary B all's parents as William Ball born 1676 in Millenbeck, Lancaster County, V irginia. This connection would make Mary Ball Brown a first cousin of Geor ge Washington. The Will of Abraham Yeazel is interesting in that it doesn 't leave any inheritance to Sarah Yeazel Smith, but does appoint Hugh V. S mith the executor. Abraham Yeazel and Mary Curl were natives of Virginia c oming to Clinton County, Ohio in 1801. They moved further north into Cla rk County in January 1810, locating in the southeastern part of Moorefie ld Township. Their son David was born June 1804 in Yellow Springs, Green C ounty, Ohio. The next four children where born at Todd's Fork in Clinton C ounty. Abraham must have either felt that Hugh V. Smith was well enough o ff or that he had already provided for Sarah 'Sally" Smith's Family. He tr usted Hugh V. making him the executor of the estate. Hugh V. Smith was a p rominent resident of Salt Rock township, being an early pioneer of the are a. His name appears many times in land sales. He took an active part in po litical life of the community. The second election was held in Marion Coun ty October 11, 1825, the resolutes for the commissioners race: Talman raus se 294; Zach Welsh 32; Hugh V. [XI50780] She is buried in Tampa, Florida under the namd Evelyn Calvert, widow of Frank Calvert. I was able to visit the grave last year when I went to Florida to visit my daughter and grandchildren. The boys put flowers on her grave. Noody has visited the grave for years because everyone has either moved or passed on. Champaign Co, Ohio Beers History 1881 NATHANIEL SCEVA (deceased) was one of the prominent citizens and early set tlers of Goshen Township. He was born in New Hampshire in 1808, of Engli sh extraction. His parents were Henry and Joanna (Celey) Sceva, both nativ es of New Hampshire. Nathaniel was brought up on the farm till about 13 ye ars old, when he was apprenticed to the carpenter trade, serving the regul ar term of seven years, thus becoming thoroughly acquainted with his profe ssion. His educational opportunities were well improved, and he qualifi ed himself for the profession of teaching, which he engaged in to some ext ent in his native State. In May, 1835, he cast his lot in the State of Ohi o, locating in the vicinity of Mechanicsburg. For some years, he follow ed his trade, and many buildings still stand as monuments of his workmansh ip. After a time, he purchased land and turned his attention to agricultur al pursuits. Some years previous to his death, which occurred Dec. 14, 187 0, he was engaged in mercantile pursuits in Mechanicsburg, in which pla ce the latter years of his life were passed. He was one of Goshen Township 's much-respected citizens, and in his death the community recognized t he loss of one of its useful members. We quote from a Columbus paper the f ollowing: "He had been a citizen of the county for more than thirty-five y ears, and had served as Commissioner and Postmaster, besides numerous loc al offices of trust, with strict integrity and fidelity. His family have l ost a kind husband and father, and the community a valuable citizen. He w as eminently the noblest work of God, 'an honest man.'" He was one of t he self-made men of the community, inheriting nothing but an honest nam e, habits of industry, and a determined will ; he accumulated before his d eath a neat competency. He was a life-long Democrat, and was exacted on th at ticket to the office of County Commissioner in a county which is overwh elmingly Republican. He was married. April 3, 1835, to Rosaline, daught er of James and Dolly Woodward. James Woodward was born in North Sutto n, N. H., March 3, 1789, and died April 28, 1872 ; his wife still survive s, in her 87th year, with her physical and mental powers remarkably well p reserved. Six sons and one daughter were born to Mr. and Mrs. Sceva, all g rowing to maturity; two sons have since died.

[HI50858] (Research):Champaign Co- A Centennial Biographical History of Champaign Co, Ohio - 19 02, (New York and Chicago The Lewis Publishing Co, 1902), pg388 (Photo) Mechanicsburg is fortunate in the possession of sirizens who are themselv es not only credible acquisitions to their respective financial, professio nal, industrial oe commercial environment, but who have the added incenti ve of nativity, and are stimulated to precedents established by pioneer fa thers who, with splendid zeal, worked out their destinies in the self-sa me surroundings. Such a one is John C Sceva, president of the Farmer's Ban k, and born in this city Nov 21, 1838. His parents, Nathaniel and Rosal in (Woodard) Sceva were born near New London, New Hampshire, the latter be ing a daughter of James and Dollie (Dale) Woodard. After the marriage of t he parents they determined to seek the supposed larger opportunities in Oh io, and , accompanied by the Woodards, settled on a farm in Goshen Townshi p, Champaign County, where the latter lived for a few years, but passed th eir last days in Mechanicsburg. Nathaniel Sceva was a carpenter by trad e, and was thus employed up to his fortieth year, thereafter turning his a ttention in various directions. He possessed marked executive abilitiy, a nd was a man of impressive thought and action. As a staunch upholder of D emocratic principles he left his impress upon several political offices, a mong them that of county commissioner, which he held for one term. Deuri ng the presidential administration of Buchanan he served as postmast er of this city. He died in 1872 at the age of sixty-two years and was sur vived by his wife until 1896, at the age of a little over eighty. Both we re members of the Baptist church, and they were parents of several childre n. One of the sons, Benjamin F was a gradutate od Union College, and serv ed for four years in the Civil was as a soldier in the Tenth New York Cava lry, rising from the rank of private to that of colonel of his regiment. A fter the war, he engaged in the practice of law in Washington DC, in whi ch city he died in 1876. John C is the second child in his father's famil y. James H is a farmer of Madison County Ohio, Jennie is the wi fe of Dr A I Sidner of Mechanicsburg; Horace M is a resident of Mechanicsb urg and is engaged in dairy farming; and Lewis C is a lawyer of this tow n. After completing his education in the public schools of Mechanicsbur g, John C Sceva spent two years at the Ohio Wesleyan University of Delawar e, Ohio. His first business experience was acquired as a clerk in his fath er's general store, and later in a dry-goods store, after which a partners hip was formed with his brother-in-law, C W Williams, in a dry goods busin ess, which was amicably continued from 1865 until 1875. He was elected a d irector in the Farmer's Bank of Mechanicsburg, which position he held f or some years. Mr Sceva was made vice-president, and in 1901 succeded to t he presidency. Through his marriage, in 1865, with Ella J Williams, who di ed in 1894, two children were born; Anna, wife of F M Clements of Mechanic sburg; and Hattie, wife of E A Roberts of Cleveland, Ohio. IN 1899 Mr Sce va married Mrs Lida S Hinckle, nee Sanford. Politically a Democra t, he is yet liberal enough to vote for the best man, but it cannot be sa id that he has to any extent identified himself with general political mat ters. He was postmaster under Cleveland's first administration and held t he office nearly five years. Since 1857 he has been a member of the Method ist Episcopal Church, of which he is an official, and for eight years w as superintendant od the Sunday-School. He was a member of the building co mmittee of the church and has been treasurer of the church a number of yea rs. Mr Sceva is one of the substancial men of the city and for his pronoun ced business ability and many fine personal attributes deserves and receiv es the appreciation of his community.

[HI51281] (Research):JOHN P. MILLER, retired, Urbana; is a son of John, Sr., and Elizabeth (Pie rson) Miller, both supposed to be natives of New Jersey, where they mature d, but married in Pennsylvania, where they settled. John, Sr., died in 180 3, in Washington Co., Penn., leaving a wife and six children, who, in t he spring of 1804, emigrated to Warren Co., Ohio. Elizabeth, after becomi ng a resident of Ohio, married twice. While residing with her third husba nd at Enon, Clark Co., she was seized by death. Our subject was born at Wa shington Co., Penn., Aug. 14, 1799, and since a child has been a reside nt of Champaign Co., Ohio. One among, if not the oldest in the count y, he has endured many privations and hardships in the early days of Champ aign Co. Considerable is due him for the progress and general improveme nt of the county. He was raised to farm life, but, in the spring of 181 5, came to Urbana, where he engaged at the trade of cabinet-making, whi ch be followed in connection with house carpentering nearly half a centur y, with honored success. After abandoning the trade, be engaged in farmin g, which he followed until the fall of 1868, since which time he has be en retired on Scioto street, Urbana. The gentleman is a man now foursco re years and five; has been identified in many of the public interes ts of the county, and a much respected citizen. He married, in the fa ll of 1822, Miss Eliza Cora, to whom ten children have been born, of wh om one, Samuel W., has a biography in this history. Five of the number a re now living. Mrs. Miller was born in Clark Co., Ohio, Jan. 30, 1804, whe re she was raised, and endured many of the now unknown pioneer duties, a f ew of which we think here proper to record. She assisted in raising the ir own flax, which was pulled, broke, scutched, spun and wove; also took t he wool from the sheep's back to the state of cloth at home. She is the da ughter of Elnathan and Hannah (Jennings) Cora. Elnathan was a native of Pe nnsylvania, and Hannah of New Jersey. They both came in single life to Ohi o, and in 1800 married near Cincinnati. Soon after, he settled in the terr itory of which Clark Co. now is composed. J. W. CHANCE, a rising and popular young dentist of this city was bo rn in Clark County, Ohio, August 29, 1848. His ancestry can be traced ha ck in the following: Jeremiah Chance was an Englishman by birth, and ca me to America between 1730 and 1740, locating in Maryland, where he liv ed till his death. One son John Chance, was born near Baltimore about 176 2. He married Martha Watkins. One son of this union, Samuel Chance, was bo rn in Maryland, eighteen miles from Baltimore, in 1784. He was a wagon-mak er by trade, and married Mary Smallwood, a native of Virginia, and daught er of Dean Smallwood. and niece of Brig. Gen. Smallwood, of Revolutiona ry fame. They were the parents of ten children, only three living. The fat her died near Catawba, Clark Co., Ohio. October 21, 1838, and the moth er in Catawba March 1, 1870, aged eighty-one years. One of their three liv ing children is William Chance, the father of our subject. He was bo rn in Pleasant Township, Clark County, Ohio, July 14, 1815 William Chance, the father of our subject. He was born in Pleasant Townshi p, Clark County, Ohio, July 14, 1815, and is now a resident of Champaign C ounty. He married Henrietta Jones, born in Champaign County, Ohio, Februa ry 21, 1827, and daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Wooley) Jones. The latter w as the daughter of Stephen Wooley. of Revolutionary fame, who was the s on of William Wooley. This latter married Margaret Brown, a grand-daught er of Walford Weber, grandson of King William IV, of Holland. He came to A merica in 1649. and purchased a goodly portion of Manhattan Island, now t he site of New York City. His sister, Aneke Jans. left an estate embraci ng 192 acres of and in the heart of New York City, and for which the hei rs now lay claim. It will thus be seen that William Chance's wife, the mot her of our subject is of royal blood, sixth in line from King William I V, of Holland. She has been the mother of eight children, five living, a nd two residing in London, this county, subject and brother, John S., h is assistant. The subject this notice was reared on a farm, obtaining a ve ry fair education. He was engaged in teaching school in Champaign County f or two years, and for five years in Jefferson and Deer Creek Township s, of this county. About 1876, he commenced the practical study of dentist ry, at Columbus, with Dr. R. G. Warner, of that city. a former reside nt of London. He remained with him one year and then came to London. He im mediately formed a partnership with Dr. Carter, which was dissolved by t he latter's death, in 1878. Dr. Chance then took charge of the entire busi ness, and has steadily increased it until at present he has one of the fin est offices in Central Ohio. and a practice large and remunerativ e. He is an indefatigable worker, and well merits the success that has fol lowed his every effort. He is connected by membership with the Ohio Sta te Dental Association, the M. E. Church. and is a true believer in the pri nciples of the Republican party. Dr. Chance .vas married. November 30, 187 6. to Allie E. Snyder, a native of Madison County, and daughter of John a nd Drusilla (Ellsworth) Snyder. They have Two children-Paul A. and Ethe l. Mrs. Chance is also a consistent member of the M. E. denomination.
