Hit By Train, Dies of Injuries. Sam Benson, Ingersoll farmer, meets death when train crashes into automobi le at Daley Crossing. "I am surely lucky to get out of it alive. I never s aw the train coming. I was thinking of something else as I approached t he track and never noticed the train. It was the first time I had ever cro ssed a track that I can remember of that I did not look for a train. Sa id Sam Benson to W. I.Arganbright while the latter was taking the injur ed man to the hospital.

Sam Benson, well known and highly respected farmer living one mile west a nd three quarters of a mile north of Ingersoll, died at the Alfalfa Gener al Hospital about 10:20 Friday night as a result of internal injuries rece ived when his car, which he was driving, was hit by a north-bound Rock Isl and passenger train at the Daley crossing. Immediately following the accid ent which was witnessed by W.I. Arganbright. Sussman, and waiting passenge rs, Mr. Benson pulled himself from under the wrecked car and walked a sho rt distance before sitting down and asking that he be taken to the hospita l. He was unaccompanied at the time of the accident. According to Mr. Arganbright, who brought the injured man to the hospita l, Mr. Benson was conscious and rational during the entire trip. Mr Arganb dght declares that Mr Benson stated he did not see the train approachin g, that he was thinking about something else and had not looked up as he a pproached the crossing. The train which was running about nine hours late, due to high waters of t he past week, came into Daley about 7:45. The engine pulling the train, w as turned head end to, causing the tender to strike the Benson car. Mr Arg anbdght states that the engine had whistled several times before reachi ng the crossing and that had Mr. Benson noticed, he would haw had plen ty of time to bring his care to a stop. The crossing at this particular po int gives a clear view of the track for about three quarters of a mile. Mr. Benson was know as a careful driver and during the trip to to wn he is quoted as saying that is was the first time he had not given a ra ilroad crossing a careful inspection before driving on. With his mind preo ccupied with business concerning his farm, for at the time of the acciden t, which resulted in his death, he was coming to Cherokee to get some harv est hands who had agreed to work for him. Mr. Benson undoubtedly draw h is car before the train without knowing its nearness. From all appearances and testimony offered by eyewitnesses, Mr. Benson's d eath can be explained only by the word "fate" His time had come, declar ed his friends as they gathered on the streets of Cherokee to talk of t he horrible accident which resulted in the death of one of Alfalfa county 's most highly respected and best loved sons. Quickly the news of the acci dent spread through Cherokee and vicinity Friday night. Saturday morning l ittle clusters of Mr. Benson's friends could be seen talking of the accide nt and death which occurred later in the evening. Always the remarks pass ed were such as denoted the unusually high regard in which the deceased m an was held by friends elsewhere. Like a pall the news of Sam Benson's dea th fell upon the entire community and wrapped those who knew the m an in a shroud of sorrow and grief, for Sam Benson was a friend to all, o ne whose place cannot be filled. Mr. Benson came to this country with his father at the opening of the stri p. For a number of years past he has been farming the odginal homestead no rthwest of Ingersoll, his father having moved to western Texas several yea rs ago. The deceased is a brother of Mrs. Absalom Hunt, whose untimely dea th sorrowed the entire community on May 11 of this year. Samuel Ellis Benson was born at Attica, Kansas, August 11, 1889, The re he grew to young manhood and in 1893 with his parents settled on a cla im near Ingersoll at the opening of the Cherokee Strip. Eary in life he w as converted to the Christian faith and for a number of years was \ery pro minent in church work connected with the Ingersoll Methodist Church. He was a member of the Odd fellows fraternity and was a Past Master of t he Ingersoll Masonic lodge. Throughout his life he bore himself a gentlem an and a true follower of the Faith. Acting on the knowledge of his de bt to mankind, he was always considerate of those about him and through th at consideration won a great host of friends who join the bereaved relativ es in the loss of a most noble man. Besides his wife, the deceased is survived by three children, Elmer and De lmer, age 9, and LaVerda, age 7, his father L.E. Benson of Hurley, Tx a nd four sisters: Mrs Fred Benson, who lives north of Cherokee, Mrs Alma Sh afer and Mrs Earl Body of Alma and Mrs Foster Blan of Frededck OK. Funeral services were held at the Cherokee Methodist Church Sunday afterno on with Rev. Wright formerly of Ingersoll officiating. A testimony to t he affection and esteem with which the deceased was held by his neighbo rs and friends, was the immense crowd which packed the church during the l ast sad rites over his body. Beautiful floral offerings from his relative s, friends, church and fraternities, encased the casket. Special mus ic by the Methodist chair and a wonderful sermon by Rev. Wright, in whi ch he paid tribute to the life of Sam Benson, were parts of the sence. Off icers of the Ingersoll Masonic lodge concluded the service with a brief fu neral rite.. Interment was not made until IO: 00 Monday morning due to the late ariv al of the father from Hurley, Tx. Burial was made in the M.W.A. cemetery w ith the Cherokee Masonic Lodge in charge of the service. A brief funeral o ration was delivered by Brother Frank Azbill.

I don't know where I heard it, but I remember someone saying that he had j ust left the kids out at home and wouldn't let them go to town with him.

PERRY -- JOHN PERRY (from unknown, undated source)

John Perry was born December 5th, 1802, in Venango County, Pa., and died M ay 23, 1889, near Urbana, Ohio, aged 86 years, 6 months and 18 days. On t he 4th of June, 1834, he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Smith, who f or forty-six years worked faithfully by his side, and then, about nine yea rs ago, passed on before him to the better world. They had nine childre n, five of them boys and four of them girls. Seven are still living. One d ied in infancy, while Anna, well-known to many here present, died in Los A ngeles, California, March 5, 1887. Of those still living, one, S. M. Perr y, is in California; while James and William live in Indianapolis and Jo hn L. resides in Kansas. Mrs. Snyder and Mrs. Carey, as also D. S. Perr y, reside in or near Urbana.

Father Perry left the place of his nativity in 1847, the five oldest child ren having been born in Pennsylvania. He and his family descended the Alle ghany and Ohio Rivers in a family boat constructed for the purpose, to a p oint near Gallipolis, Gallia county, Ohio, where they resided for three ye ars. From there they removed to Piqua, Miami county, Ohio, and from ther e, in 1862, to Champaign county, where he has lived most of the time sinc e, except two years in Indiana and Kansas, while living with his childre n.

Father Perry was originally a member of the Seceder church, now the Unit ed Presbyterian, having been united with that religious body in early boyh ood, and was one of the strictest of the sect, and especially so in rega rd to Sabbath observance. His children still have a vivid recollecti on of the Shorter Catechism, and the invariably enforced rule with the old er children was to read from three to six chapters of the New Testament a nd to recite portions of the Catechism every Sabbath, while laughing alou d, whistling or any other amusement was not permitted.

During his residence in Indiana in 1867, there being at that point no Unit ed Presbyterian church, he united with the Methodist Episcopal church, a nd has ever since been a very enthusiastic member of that denominatio n. He greatly prized, appreciated and enjoyed the institutions of Methodis m, especially the class meeting, which he loved as few love it, and whi ch he never failed to attend as long as his health would permit. Brother P erry had a profound experimental knowledge of religion. He was quite famil iar with the Scriptures and with the best hymns of the church. His class m eeting experience added to his store of religious knowledge. He w as of an emotional temperament and it was a common thing for him to bre ak out in praises to God when some blessed truth of religion had been utte red. His favorite expression was "Glory to God", which he always spoke slo wly and with emphasis, indicative of the reality of the feeling correspond ing to the words. I saw him and conversed with him quite often, and his re ligious fervor was like an unfailing stream, for it had its source in t he fountain of eternal life.

The one thing that impressed me most in Father Perry was the blessedness a nd comfort which genuine religion gives to its possessor in age and feeble ness extreme. Although he had every care and attention which could be best owed upon him by loving hands, and was constantly surrounded by loving hea rts, yet Christ was his portion, and in Him he found his chief joy in h is declining years. He loved society, but it was the society of the godl y; and when with them he seldom talked except upon the subject of religio n, the one subject of all absorbing interest to him. -- C. W. Rishell.

He is a son of Joseph H. and Sarah H. (Heaverine) Woods. Joseph H. w as a native of North Carolina ; his father, who was a soldier with Mari on in the Revolution, removed , to Kentucky while Joseph was a boy, and af terward removed to the vicinity of Chillicothe, Ohio, but soon return ed to Kentucky. He was a Dunkard preacher and a man of more than ordina ry education and talent. Joseph H. came to Urbana in 1813, with William Du nlap, with whom he worked and learned the trade of millwright. After remai ning here about three years and establishing himself in business as a manu facturer of spinning-wheels. he returned to Kentucky and married Sarah Hea verine. In 1819, he returned to Champaign Co. and settled on a tract of la nd in Jackson Township, where be followed his business of spinning wheel - maker for many years, and where, in 1871, both he and his wife died with in three days of each other. They had a family of five children, all of wh om are still living. Thomas F. was the second child and first son, a nd is now the only member of the family residing in this county. He was bo rn in Jackson Township in 1822, and grew to manhood there in the days of s ubscription schools and limited facilities. He attended the first school t aught in their neighborhood; James West was teacher, followed, the neat su mmer, by Miss Eliza McCrea. Mr. Woods learned wheel-making of his fathe r, but, as that business gave out about the time he attained his majorit y, he turned his attention to farming. He married, in 1844, Anna, daught er of John Merritt, Jr., who, with his father, John Merritt, Sr., were ve ry early residents of Jackson Township. He taught seven terms of district school in his younger days, and w as Township Clerk twenty-eight years. In 1861, the Auditor being sic k, he was appointed Deputy Auditor, and discharged the duties of the offi ce for two years with great satisfaction. In 1865, he was elected Commissi oner, and was re-elected in 1868. In 1873, he was again called to the Comm issioner's office, and was re-elected in 1876. In 1877, he purchased a res idence in St. Paris, to which he removed, leaving his farm to the ca re of his son, Van Orlando. Mr. Woods is now Deputy Recorder. He has be en a member of the M. E. He re he lived till in August, 1847, when his death occurred ; his wife di ed in 1852. They had six sons and four daughters; all grew up and were mar ried; two sons only, survive. Our subject was the seventh child; he was re ared on a farm, and early became inured to farm labor; his life has been d evoted to farming and stock-raising, and at this he has been signally succ essful. At his advent into Goshen Township, he was 22 years old; and has s ince resided here, a period of nearly half a century. He lived with his pa rents till he moved to his present place, forty years ago. Then be beg an in the woods and log cabin ; now he has a farm of nearly 400 acres und er good improvement, and a fine, large, brick residence, the result of h is industry and economy. He married, in 1837, Mary Jones, who was bo rn in Logan Co., Ohio, and raised in this, Champaign Co.; she died in Jun e, 1871. One son and five daughters were born to this union. Mr. Wren, for merly an " Old-Line Whig," now embraces the principles of the Republican p arty.

Champaign Co Early Settlers Vol 1 pg 118 Of Berkely Co, VA married Elizabe th Bishop of Louden Co, VA and moved to Flemingsburg, KY about 1795. Sev en years later they came to Champaign County and settled east of northeast of Catawba a short distance. Their land was located between the Mechanicsburg Road and Turkey Ridge Road. David Wren died 1847 and wife in 185 2. They had six sons and four daughters, all whom grew up and married. Some of these went to western states. Later this family became owners of some 300 acres south of Mechanicburg in Goshen Twp. Thomas Wren fell heir to this land and eventually increased the holding to 400 acres. Thomas Wren married Mary Jones and had one son, Joseph and 5 daughters. The daughters were the ones who left many descendants about Mechanicsburg. A daughter of the original family from Virginia married James Roberts and these two became ancestors of the Champaign County Robert's who live near Catawba Station

Mrs Eliza J Beaty departed this life Saturday evening, March 7, 1885, in h er sixty-fifth year. She has been a great sufferer, for many years, and w as perfectly reisgned to her lot, never was heard to murmer of word again st Him who doeth all things well. We deeply mourn her loss, but kn ow it is her eternal gain. She was followed to her last resting pla ce by a large concourse of relatives and friends. Funeral services conduct ed by Rev Drake; opening prayer by Rev Norris. Rev Drake selected a suitab le portion of scripture. "I would not live always", made some touching rem arks after which Rev Muncy made an able prayer. Interment at Kingston Ceme tery. Death cold unfeeling death, Threw her unerring dart, And stopped he beating pulse and breath, And saddened every heart. Prostrate and sold she lay, Yet touching peaceful sweet; When in her casket borne away She left us all to weekp. We mourn not without hope, Her trust was in the Lord; And when life's brittle thread was broke, She rose to her reward. Peace to my sainted Mother, Now far beyond all fear; To find in that eternal life, The rest denied her here.
