[HI47056] (Research):Tuesday, February 6, 1906 Urbana Daily Citizen Neighbors Had Their Suspicions And Called Coroner When Little One Di ed at Adddison
Late Monday afternoon Coroner S C Moore recived a call to come to Add ison (Christianburg) to investigate the cause of the death of a child, t he six year old daughter of Mrs Rilla Stapleton. It was suppertime when t he coroner reached the Stapleton home and twelve o'clock before he had fin ished his work and returned to his home in this city.
The child died on Sunday night and it was not until after the underta ker had embalmed the little body that the neighbors became suspicious a nd decided to call the coroner. Such investigation as was possible to cond uct failed to draw from those knowing the facts anything that would te nd to incriminate anyone and there will probably be no preosecutions for t he death of the child although circumstances point strongly to the child 's death being caused by acute alcoholism.
The Stapletons have had a doubtful reputation for some tim e, so it is said. Mrs Stapleton having been divorced from her husband a nd since that time there have been strange stories afloat around Addison c oncewrning the conduct of the woman. In addition to the liquor habit and t hat she has frequently given the child enough liquor to make it drun k. It is believed that she had done so much this time that the child di ed from the effects of the liquor. The little girl took sick on Saturday a nd was unconscoius for ten hours before a doctor was called by the moth er of the child. When Dr Hyde was called he was unable to arouse the chi ld for even a brief second and in the end the child succumbed. He worked l ong and hard to bring the child to, but all efforts failed and the litt le one died at ten o'clock Sunday night.
Even then nothing suspicous was thought and the child's death was bel ieved to be due to natural causes but the neighbors demanded an investigat ion and the coroner was called. About all the testimony the coroner was ab le to secure Monday night was to the effect that if the child had obtain ed any whiskey at all it did so of its own self and unknown to anyone. T he death of the little tot has created something of a sensation in the vil lage and it is hardley believed that the last chapter in the story has y et been written

Suicide of Jacob Phenegar on Sunday In a Fit of Melancholia Aged Man Fired Bullet Into His Brain and Death W as Instantaneous Grandchild Found Dead Body in an Outhouse --Was 78-- Family Left-- The Pla ns For The Funeral It was about an hour after Jacob Phenegar, 78, shot himself Sunday afterno on that his dead body was found by a grandchild in an outbuilding at the h ome of William Ailes, corner Washington and Hamilton Streets. He had us ed a .32 caliber pistol which he held close to his left eye. The bullet we nt upward, shattering the skull and producing instant death. Mr Phenegar h ad eaten a hearty dinner and almost immediately afterward went out of t he house and it is presumed that he shot himself immediately after enteri ng the outbuilding although the shot was not heard. When the dead body w as found, the coroner, Dr Frank Makemson, of Lewistown, was summoned, a nd made a finding that the act of suicide had been committed in a fit of m elancholia brought about by organic heart trouble. Jacob Phenegar was bo rn near Springhills and married Mary Gray. They lived in Uinion Twp, th is county, a number of years. The children remaining are: Mrs William Park er, Mrs William Ailes, Miss Anna Phenegar of Bellefontaine; William Pheneg ar living on Ludlow Road near Bellefontaine, Mrs George Kress of Quinc y; Ed Phenegar of Lima; Frank Phenegar of Troy. Mr Phenegar and his wife w ere divorced probably 25 years ago and he left this county, locating in t he west. He married an Indianapolis woman who died at Medford Oregon. H is first wife is still living here. About five years ago Mr Phenegar retur ned here from the west and since then had been making his home with his da ughter, Mrs Ailes, in this city, and also at Indianapolis with a brother a nd sister. He returned home from a visit in Indianapolis and was not feeli ng well. He talked to Mrs Ailes about some business matters, saying he d id not expect to live very long and wanted to have everything straighten ed out in case he should drop off suddenly. But he did not mention suici de and his daughter did not suspect such a thing. He was a soldier in t he Civil War, in Company I, Second Ohio Heavy Artillary. The brothers a nd sisters who remain are Benjamin Phenegar of DeGraff, Samuel Phenegar a nd Mrs Mary Bowman of Indianapolis, and Mrs Eliza Tucker of Shideler, I n. Funeral services will be held at the Ailes home Tuesday afterno on at 2 in charge of Rev J F Olive of the Methodist church. Burial wi ll be made at the Bellefontaine Cemetery. The family is of the opinion th at Mr Phenegar procured the revolver with which he took his life whi le he was absent from his daughters home last Thursday. He had not be en at all well that day and suddenly announced that he was going up tow n, to the surprise of Mrs Ailes, and he left but returned in a short tim e. His errand, it is now believed, was to get the weapon, having all unkno wn, decided to take his lifel On Sunday he semed brighter and better and t he finding of the dead body was a terrible shock to the family. [HI47297] (Research):1880 census name Clement age 7 1900 census name Ronnie age 27

To say the least I was thrilled to see the Breslin surname listed. I ha ve some info on the Breslin family - James and Bridget Murphy Breslin fami ly of St. Paris and I am in contact with a ggreatgrand daughter of Mary Ma ude Breslin.

The other item I wanted to mention, that I thought you would get a kick o ut of is the story of Clement G. Breslin - wife's name was Jennie - she w as born Indiana, they had no children. His actual nickname was Romeo (Romi e) not Ronnie. I have no idea why this was his nickname - we can only imag ine. But, my understanding is that he was just a wonderful person and thou ght highly of in the St. Paris area. In fact, one family thought so mu ch of their neighbor and friend Romeo Breslin, that they named their son a fter him - hence Romeo Nicholas.

Being that is my married last name, and researching the Breslin surnam e, I just had to call Mr. Nicholas while in St. Paris one time. I figur ed how many Romeos could there be from St. Paris. I was pleased with the s tory, and then Mrs. Nicholas sent me some info on the Nicholas name.

I have never been able, other than through family oral history, been ab le to connect my John and Hanora O'Keefe Breslin of Urbana to the St. Par is gang. Although in my heart I believe that James and John were brother s. And, the the Neligan family, as well as the Murphy family that owned t he lumber yard are aslo relat Karen Anne Breslin-Nicholas karenann@cac.n et

!LAND RECORD: Champaign County, Recorder's Office, Book 14, page 555; 25 J uly 1836. William's birth date was calculated from his tombstone inscription; 23 A ug 1839 - 72y 2m 25d = 29 May 1769. There have been other dates suggested for his birthdate: 1. 25 May 1765, Arney Bible. 2. 30 May 1767, Rock Creek, Montgomery County, Maryland. 3. 30 May 1767, Dutehess or Ulster County, New York. 4. 30 May 1767, Virginia. Rational; Conklins migrated to the area near t he Wests', near Harpers Ferry, Jefferson County, Virginia (now West Virgin ia.). Jacob and other Conklins' were in Virginia, selling land to New York ers. Dedicated researchers have spent years searching for William We st in New York, without success.

The plentiful supply of Conklings in the Harpers Ferry, VA area around 178 3, and later in Champaign-Clark County, with an excess of Jacobs and an An anias or two, makes it most probable that the West-Conkling nuptials occur red right there in northwestern Virginia (now WV). William Would have be en about age 15 years when his parents moved to Berkeley County VA, old en ough to be interested in girls, i.e., Hannah Conkling. William and Hann ah probably met when they lived in the area of Charles Town, Berkeley County, VA. For a while they lived near Harpers Fer ry, where at least two children, Azubah and John, were born.

In 1805, William migated to Champaign County, Ohio, settling near his Unc le Basil West. On 26 Jan 1807, as a resident of Warren County, Ohio, Willi am purchased from the the government, 160 acres in R 11, T 3, S 3, for $2. 50 an acre.

On 8 Oct 1811, William voted in the Champaign County, Ohio electio n. On 15 Apr 1812, as a resident of Champaign County, he purchased additio nal land in R 11, T 3, S 3. William & Hannah joined the Honey Creek Bapti st Church on 3 April 1813 .

On 21 Aug 1818, William sold half of his land to Sampson Kelly. On 19 F eb 1836 he witnessed the Will of Levi Rouze / Rouse, in

In a letter from Byrle Jacob Osborn (MA), to Mrs. A.R. Lash (OK); dat ed 7 April 1934, Byrle claimed to have "reams" of data on the ancesto rs of William West (b 20 May 1767, NY). She claimed that William descend ed from Matthew West who settled in Lynn, MA in 1636 and in Newpor t, RI in 1646. Two of Matthew's sons went to NJ, Robert & Bartholomew, Fra ncis remained in RI. He CLAIMS that "one of the sons who went to NY was AL MOST certainly the father of William. William's grave is in good condition, but Hanna's is badly broken." William is the ONLY person with t he "WEST" surname, listed in the Terre Haute cemetery, Mad River Townshi p, Champaign County, Ohio, inventory taken by Moore, Mahan & Mahan.

The political jurisdictions in which the West family properties were locat ed in Maryland, changed twice: 1. 1695 - 1747 Prince George's County 2. 1748 - 1775 Frederick County 3. 1776 - 1994 Montgomery County 4 Apr 1934- A Query appeared in the Boston Transcript, "WEST, informati on wanted on the following: William West, born May 30, 1767 in New York St ate, probably , either Dutchess County or Ulster County, married Feb. 1 2, 1788, Hannah Conklin; moved to the vicinity of Harper's Ferry, Va., whe re a daughter , Azubah, was born Sept. 20 1789, and a son, John, Oct. 8, 1 701. Obit says he came from VA over 59 yrs ago.

From Glenn 5/1/2006 kgs4444@cablelynx.com there were two Snapp families that came to America from Alsace-Lorraine. O ne in 1733 (the one I am researching), and one in the 1750's (the one who se family tree you have on your web site). The 1733 group landed in Philadelphia then moved to Virginia and then Tenness ee and other states (as I mentioned in my e-mail). The other group also ca me to Pennsylvania, stayed there and some moved to the Bourbon County ar ea of Kentucky and to Ohio. The problem is, is that apparently none of t he latter group ever lived in Virginia, with a possible exception shown be low. The family tree you posted does not show any of your Snapp's in Virgi nia, so it becomes difficult to comprehend how Ephraim is descended from t hat line since all records (as you so kindly point out indicate he was bo rn in Shenandoah County, Virginia). our discussion encouraged me to go deeper ito the question of Ephraim Sna pp and it appears, in the general consensus as though Ephraim is the s on of the Adam Snapp I had mentioned. Apparently Adam was the son of George (b. abt 1726 in Alsace), who married a Maria M agdalena Liebenguts, and one of the second group of Snapp's who came to t he U.S. in 1750 in the Phoenix. Adam moved to Virginia from Pennsylvan ia and died there.Apparently he was the only one of the later group of Sna pp's to go to Virginia. He married a Regina Boehm and the sixth of their e ight children was good old Ephraim. So that mystery is apparently solve d, as there appears to be a good paper trail to substantiate most of the foregoing.Anyhow thanks for getting me to go mo re deeply into that question.
