Much of the info on the descendants of John comes from the research and ha rd work of Lois. Thanks Lois!

The 1860 census lists John as a 40 year old carpenter with a real estate v alue of $1,000 and his personal estate at $320. He listed Pennsylvan ia as his birthplace. He had Daniel Myers, 19, and George Oliver ,20, liv ing in his household as apprentice carpenters. The 1870 census shows John still in Bethel Township/New Carlisle, Clark, O hio as a carpenter but his real estate is valued at $800 and his person al estate at $200. The records of New Carlisle Methodist Church show th at John joined the church in August, 1857. I have not been able to fi nd a record of his death. He is not buried near his wife in the New Carli sle Cemetery or else he has an unmarked grave. Joined church: August 1857, New Carlisle Methodist Church

1850 census Clark Co., OH Bethel Twp. pg. 101 lists ASHELMAN, John 3 1, PA carpenter ASHELMAN, Martin 27, PA (John's brother) ASHELMAN, Hetty A. 23, PA ASHELMAN, Barbara E. 1, OH MYERS, John 21, PA carpenter (this is Hetty's brother)

[HI45977] (Research):Hester is also listed as Hettie in the 1880 U S Federal Census for Ohio, C lark, Bethel Township/New Carlisle. She joined the New Carlisle Methodi st Church on August 19, 1859 per their membership records. She gave Penns ylvania as her birthplace and also the birthplace of her mother and fathe r. She is buried in the old church yard in New Carlisle near her mother a nd father, Samuel and Nancy Myers. Her tombstone reads "Mother - Hester E shelman 1827-1903." Hester also appears in the 1870 and 1880 U S Feder al census as wife who kept house. She states that her mother and her fath er were born in Pennsylvania; this would be Samuel and Nancy Myers. Join ed church: August 19, 1859, New Carlisle Methodist, Ohio

She is thought to be the child of Samuel Myers and Nancy Coick who a re in the 1850 Clark co, Bethel, OH census, but Nancy is too young to ha ve a child born 1827. There is a Samuel Myers in 1840 Lancaster Co, PA, b ut 4 daughters, not 5. Further researcher needed.

The 1850 census Clark Co., OH Bethel Twp. pg. 114 lists MYERS, Samuel 44 PA. cooper. Nancy 36 PA Martha 16 PA, Elizabeth 15 PA, Anna 14 PA, Catherine 12 PA, Daniel 10 P A, John 8 PA

I have a feeling that Hetty and John Myers are from a former marriag e. In the 1860 census Daniel Myers, 19 PA is living with John and Hetty E shelman and Samuel and Nancy Myers have just one child, 5 year old Samu el Myers living with them.

I'm now trying to find land records for the original Eshelman farm near Do nnelsville in Clark County. I believe that John, Martin and their siste r, Barbara came to Clark County from PA in the late 1840's with their pare nts. My cousin is 7 years older than I am and he was told that the origin al Eshelman died and was buried on the family farm. He said the farm w as on the Lower Valley Pike so I think that this is where John, Martin a nd Hester were living in 1850. Barbara Eshelman married a John H. Myers on 10 June 1856. If this is t he same John Myers that was living with John and Hetty in 1850 then they c ertainly kept things in the family because Martin married Elizabeth Myer s, sister to Hetty. I wish I really knew all the answers. Lois McCall-Bechtold 3315 Snyder Road Sebring, FL 33870 bechtold@strato.net

Cause of Death: tuberculosis

[HI45979] (Research):Daniel was listed in the 1870 and 1880 U S Federal Census as a carpenter l ike his father. He died of tuberculosis at a young age as did his older s ister, Barbara. His granddaughter, Ada Josephine Garver, remembers bei ng told that he was the Marshall for the town of New Carlisle at the ti me of his death.

There in some confusion between David and Daniel's death records. Apparen tly Alonzo Eshelman accompanied Daniel's widow, Carrie (Nicklas) Eshelm an to the court to file Daniel's death and while they were there Alonzo al so filed a death record for David who had died several months earlier. Th ey got the records mixed up but I know from my grandmother's stories th at Daniel Eshelman was a carpenter who died of consumption. David Eshelm an was a tinner who died of brain disease, according to Alonzo.

"WAS HE MURDERED! A Mystery That Is Bothering Detectives. The De ad Body Of A Man Found In The Alley In The Rear Of The Betts-Street Hospit al. Peculiar Circumstances Surrounding The Case--Body Identified. About four o'clock yesterday morning William Baker, the driver of a milk-w agon, while making his rounds, discovered the dead body of a man lyi ng in the alley in the rear of the Betts-street Hospital. The remains we re those of a man about twenty-five years of age. The clothing worn by t he corpse was clean an neat, and every thing pointed to their belongi ng to a respectable young man. // Baker notified Officer Connors, who ca lled Patrol No. 5, and the remains were removed to Habig's. Here it was f ound that one of the shoes and the hat of the deceased were missing. A fu rther search of the alley where the remains were found was made, but the m issing shoe and hat could not be found.

On learning of the matter Colonel Hudson detailed Detectives Schnucks a nd Hudson on the case. The officers started to work immediately. They fi rst made a thorough examination of the corpse. They could not find no wou nds about the body, with the exception of a slight abrasion of the sk in on the forehead. The clothing was next examined, and was found to ha ve been made by a tailor at Sidney, Ohio named Abe Herzatom. On a clos er examination the officers were able to distinquish the name of B. S. Bot kins (sic) written on the fob pocket of the pants. Not any articles we re found in the jacket by which he could be identified. // Armed with th is clue, the officers telegraphed to the Marshal of Sdney (sic), Ohio, ask ing if a person of that name was known in town. Last night the followi ng answer was received:

COLONEL HUDSON, Chief of Police: The dead body found in your city is th at of my brother. I will be down on the first train. John Botkins.

This was all that was said, and the officers were as much in the dark as e ver as to how the young man met his death. Another visit was made to t he Morgue, and the clothing showed the marks of a wheel which had apparent ly passed over the neck of the deceased. Whether it was done before or af ter death could not be determined. // A number of the neighbors who resi de near the scene where the body was found were seen. A Mrs. O'Brien reme mbered distinctly of hearing a wagon drive in the alley about half-past el even o'clock Friday night and stop where the body was found. In a few min utes she says, she heard it drive off. A Mrs. McCaffery, an invalid, w ho lives in the neighborhood, also remmebered distinctly of hearing the wa gon drive in the alley and stop and then drive away. // After worki ng up every conceivable theory, the officer were compelled to acknowled ge at a late hour last night that they were as much at sea as ever as to h ow the man met his death, or as to how the body was placed in the alley.

Late last night the following dispatch was received from the late ho me of the deceased: "SIDNEY, OHIO, June 20--Young Botkins sold his inte rest in some land in this county a few days since, and left his home at Bo tkins with the money. His whereabouts was unknown to his relatives unt il the reception of a dispatch to-day, announcing the finding of his bo dy in Cincinnati. // Deceased is the son of Richard Botkins, a promine nt citizen of this county, who died a few years since. He is also a neph ew of Billy Botkins, the well known conductor on the D. and M. Deceased w as unmarried. His brother John leaves to-night for Cincinnati."

From this intelligence the case becomes more complicated and mysterio us as ever. If Botkin had any amount of money, what became of it, and whe re did he spend his time while in this city? Another question is, how d id the body get where it was found in the alley? One of his shoes is miss ing, and the sock on that foot is perfectly cleaned, which shows that he c ould not have walked and distance. // It has been suggested by the detec tives that the body was brought by wagon to the spot where it was found, a nd either thrown out in front of the wagon and run over, or simply dump ed out and then run over by some milkwagon. This seems very plausibl e. // Taken altogether it is one of the most mysterious cases that has c ome under the notice of the police for some time. Detectives Wjite and Sc hnucks will be put on the case today, and further developments may occur."

Beers History JOSHUA SAXTON, editor and real estate dealer, Piqua. Mr. Saxton is a nati ve of Pennsylvania, bore in Huntingdon, Dec. 11, 1807; his father was a ha nd manufacturer of nails; he assisted his father until 1822, when his moth er died, and he came West, to Canton, Ohio, where John Saxton, an elder br other, was editor and proprietor of t! e Canton Repositor; after servi ng a six-years apprenticeship there, he was a "devil " in Philadelphia, Pi ttsburgh, Columbus and other points, and returned to Canton in 1830, an d, in 1831, became a partner in the proprietorship of the Repositor, in wh ich he continued until 1838. Mr. Saxton came to Urbana in the spring of 1838, by the solicitati on of the leading Whig citizens, to take charge of a paper, and purchas ed the office and established the Western Citizen, now Urbana Citizen, a nd Gazette, with which be has been connected until recently: he is now ret ired from the paper and editorial labor, being in his 73d year, and the ol dest continuous editor in the State, having been engaged in editorial wo rk since 1831. Mr. Saxton is emphatically a self-made man, for, in his you th, he received but the bare, rudimentary education obtained at the subscr iption schools of that day, and afterward educated himself while apprentic e-" devil "-and editor; he began the issue of his paper in Urbana with a l ist of 300 subscribers (the citizens had promised him 500); he retires wi th a list of 1,500, and it was as high as 2,000 during the credit times M r. Saxton has been a worthy and active member of the M. E. Church for upwa rd of fifty years. He married, in 1834, Miss Margaret A. Early Settlers Vol 3 pg 90 Members of the Todd faniilies were among those who did that. After James T odd had become firmly established, his son, James Jr., born 1797, gr ew to manhood there and in January 1819 came up in Greene Township, Cla rk County, and married Elizabeth Garlough, a daughter of John Garloug h, a native of Germany. They became parents of nine children who grew to m aturity in Clark County. David Todd, a son of the original James Todd, Sr., and an older broth er of James Jr., grew to manhood in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, marri ed Sarah McCormick, and in Dauphin County a family of 12 children was bo rn to them. Two of the children died in Pennsylvania, the remaining ten ch ildren all came with the parents. Arriving at a brother’s home in Warren C ounty in 1846, the remained there while David, the father, prospected f or a suitable location, Pretty Prairie in Champaign County being his fin al selection. It was 1847 when the family of David Todd finally took up their abode ne ar the very center of Pretty Prairie. The tract of more than two hundred a nd filly acres, being the Thnns now owned by Elton Everhart and the hundre d-acre farm recently owned and sold by Charles Seibert. David Todd was a man well past middle age when he settled on the Prairi e. He passed away about twenty years later, his wife Sarah outliving h im by several years. David and his brother, James, who settled in Warren C ounty, had both served as soldiers in the War of 1 812—James as a capta in and David as a private. Of the ten children who came with David and wif e, some had already reached maturity. Their names were as follows: Jane, M ary, Eliza, Henry M., Totnas Mitchel, John E., Sarah M., David W., Rebec ca M., and James S. Three of the sons in the family married daughters of local families and sp ent their entire lives in Champaign County. Thomas Mitchel Todd was bo rn in 1827; in 1357 he married Mary M. Rawlings, a daughter of James Rawli ngs, also residents of Pretty Prairie. They were parents of six childre n: David S., James R., Alma, Thomas R., William H., and Pearl. Their tim nn home was on the middle Prairie road, about one mile south of Urbana Loc al School. John E. Todd, born about 1833, married Miss Jennie Mumpher in 1859. Aft er Mr. Todd’s luther died in 1866, the John E. Todd family occupied the or iginal home place. A description of this home fann is recorded in Beers Hi story, which I quote here just as it is in Beers: “Among the many beautilbl farms skirting the Pretty Prairie, near Urban a, is the elegant one of the Todd family. There is perhaps no finer view f rom any residence in Urbana Township, and the taste displayed in the groun ds and buildings are of that exquisite kind seldom seen outside of the lar ger cities. The parents of John E., Todd chose wisely and well when they c hose this elevation, probably the highest on the Prairie, for the locati on of their homestead.” This description was written probably about 13 75 or 1880. The home, now the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Elton Everhart, w as probably built by the pioneer David Todd shortly before his death in 18 68. John Todd and wife were parents of eight children as follows: Winfield Sco tt, Clarence M., Sadie, John H., Annie, Marion It, Percy C., and Jennie.

[HI46538] (Research):Beers 1881 Biography, History of Champaign Co, OH pg 697 JOHN E. TODD, farmer; P. O. Urbana. Among the many beautiful farms skirti ng the Pretty Prairie is the elegant one of Mr. Todd. There is perha ps no finer landscape presented to the view from any residence in the town ship, and the taste displayed in the grounds and buildings are of that exq uisite kind seldom seen outside of the larger cities. The parents of Mr. T odd were natives of Pennsylvania and emigrated from that State to Warren C o., Ohio, in the spring of 1846. Their children, ten in number, came wi th them, and eight are still living. Their names are given in the biograp hy of T. M. Todd, of this township. David Todd was one of those quiet, una ssuming men who loved his home, his wife and his children more than anythi ng else on earth. He was an ardent temperance men and taught his childr en the beauties of truth and honor by a life-long example that has shown i ts fruits in those who now represent him. The date of his death is nam ed in the sketch of Thomas M. Todd. He died as he had lived, trusting in t hat promise made to those who live humbly and walk uprightly. John E. To dd and Miss Jennie M. Mumper were married in 1859. They have eight childr en -Winfield Scott, Clarence M., Sadie, John H., Annie, Marion R., Per cy C. and Jennie. They were all born on the beautiful homestead of their g randfather, that is now rendered dear to their parents by the associatio ns surrounding them. Mr. Todd was one of the Ohio National Guards, 134th R egiment, but saw no active service. He is rather an active local politicia n, and is an acknowledged leader of the Republican party in his neighborho od. His life thus far has been a quiet one, he having no desire for offici al honors. His farm was the drill-ground and his house the armory of the c ompany of National Guards during their organization.

Champaign Co, Early Settlers pg 107-108 Henry Weaver, mentioned as one of the counsilmen in the foregoing sketche s, died in 1872. He was the welthiest man in the county at the time of h is death. He was born in Berkeley Co, VA in 1788 and while still an infa nt his parents migrated to Kentucky, locating near LExington. In 1802, when fourteen years of age, he came with several other peop le to Champaign county .On account of an Indian scare in what is now Mad R iver township, nearly all of the group returned to Kentucky. The Weaver fa mily remained here. In 1807 Henry Weaver married Nancy Chapman, whose father had settled on t he creek which bears his name. About 1813 Henry Weaver moved to Urbana a nd set up a shoemaker shop in a small building on Scioto street. From th is small business he branched out gradually into the mercantile busines s. His shrewd business acumen enabled him to become merchant real estate , dealer and constructor of houses and business buildings, banker and hot el proprietor . In 1821 he erected the brick building formerly occupied by Champaign Telep hone Company. In 1833 he purchased the site yet known as the Weaver buildi ng on the northeast corner ofMonument Square and Scioto street. From th is site he removed two buildings to lots on Church and Court streets. He t hen proceeded to erect on the site, one of the finest brick buildings f or that day to grace Urbana or any other town of its size in this pa rt of the state. Somewhat later he built the building now occupied by t he Uhlman store. Then to top his efforts he purchased the then two story building now commo nly known as the Douglas Hotel. This building had originally been bui lt by John C. Pearson. Weaver immediately proceeded to tear off the t op of the building and add two more stories, bringing it to its present at tractive style. I have told you enough to bring out his business habits. In addition to t he foregoing, he took an active part in civic affairs. In 1859 he became p resident of the Champaign County Bank, a position he held for several year s. In the winter of 1872, while still very active physically, he was stric ken with pneumonia and in four days passed away, his career ended.

[HI46638] (Research):Clark Co, Ohio History City of Springfield, pg 463 One of the prominent citizens. who, about. this time, became identified wi th Springfield's fortunes. was Reuben Miller. who was the son of Rev. Robe rt Miller. a local minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was bo rn on the 19th day of January, 1797. in an old schoolhouse at the mou th of Pike Run, on the Monongahela River. near Brownsville, Penn.. where h is father had stopped to spend the winter of 1796-97 while emigrating fr om Virginia to Kentucky. From this point the family journeyed by flat-bo at to Limestone (now Maysville). Ky.. and settled in Mason County. and aft erward removed to Fleming County in that State.

In March. 1812. in order to escape the evils of slavery, his father remov ed his family to Champaign County. Ohio. where he located upon a farm with in the bounds of the present Moorefield Township, in Clark County. At th is time, Reuben was but fifteen years of age. He worked upon the farm unt il he was twenty-two years of age, when he turned his attention to stud y, and, by close application, without a teacher, for three or four years ( in the meantime occasionally teaching school), he acquired a pretty fair E nglish education; as he, in his own biography, relates, "became a very go od arithmetician, learned to write a good hand, became a 'pretty good gram marian, studied geometry, trigonometry, surveying, navigation, and acquir ed some knowledge of astronomy; also commenced the study of the Latin lang uage, but failed for want of an instructor."

On the 27th of March, 1823, he married Mary Hedges, who was born in Berkel ey County, Virginia, and was living at that time with a brother in Champai gn County, Ohio, and in the month of December following, removed to a cab in which he had built on a farm given to him by his father, in Moorefie ld Township. where he resided, farming a little, teaching school, and occa sionally making land surveys, until the 10th of April, 1828, when he remov ed to Springfield; the occasion of the removal was his appointment, by t he Court of Common Pleas, in the fall of 1827, as County Surveyor of Cla rk County. Springfield had then grown from a village of a few house s, as he first saw it in 1812, to be a town of about 800 to 900 inhabitant s. At that time, there was little surveying to be done, and his first empl oyment was in the County Clerk's office. Afterward, he taught a school f or three or four years in Springfield. He was County Surveyor for nine yea rs, during a part of which time he was also a Justice of the Peace and May or, or rather, as it then was named; President of the Town Council of Spri ngfield. During this time, he acquired some means, went into the dry-goo ds business with a man by the name of Carrick, who in two years succeed ed in loading the concern down with debt, and then died, leaving his partn er many thousand dollars minus, notwithstanding which his energies were n ot impaired, but he went diligently to work, and, after fourteen yea rs of hard struggle, paid off all his indebtedness.

In the fall of 1838, he was elected County Auditor of Clark County, and w as re-elected to eight successive terms, serving in that position eighte en years, from March, 1839, to March, 1857. In the fall of 1856, during h is last term as Auditor, he was elected Justice of the Peace of Springfie ld Township, and was re-elected five successive terms, serving in that pos ition eighteen years, until the fall of 1874. He became a member of the Me thodist Episcopal Church in September, 1812, and, in the year 1835, was or dained a Local Deacon, and afterward a Local Elder in the same church, a nd held that relation to the church until he died. On the 2d of January, 1 875, his wife died, and then, at the earnest solicitation of his only livi ng daughter, he went to reside with her at Keokuk, Iowa, where he di ed on the 3d day of October, 1880, from a gradual failing of the bodily po wers, at the ripe old age of nearly eighty-three years, and was subsequent ly buried in Fern Cliff Cemetery, in this city. He left five living childr en-Dr. D. B. Miller, of Covington, Ky. ; John C. Miller, of Springfield, O hio, present Probate Judge; Commander Joseph N. Miller, United States Nav y; and Henry R. Miller and Mrs. R. B. Ogden of Keokuk, Iowa.

He was a man of correct character and habits, peculiar and almost eccentr ic in some of his ways; he had a keen sense of the humorous, and was almo st invariably sunny and jocular in his moods. He had a more than ordina ry share of natural ability, but was hampered by his imperfect chances f or education and his business misfortunes, so that he himself felt, notwit hstanding that he was a prominent and honored citizen, that he never attai ned to the full measure of his strength. He was much given to humorous ver sification, and as a specimen of his peculiar modes of thought, we appe nd in conclusion of this sketch his epitaph, written by himself many yea rs before his death: "Here lies a man - a curious one,

No one can tell what good he's done. Nor yet how much of evil; Where now his soul is. who can tell! In heaven above, or low in hell? With God or with the devil?

"While living here he oft would say That he must shortly turn to clay, And quickly rot- This thought would sometimes cross his brain. That he perhaps might live again, And maybe not.

"As sure as he in dust doth lie, He died because lie had to die, But much against his will; Had he got all that he desired. This roan would never have expired, He had been living still."
