[NI44887] Beers History of Clark County, Ohio
Samuel NAWMAN, farmer; P.O. Springfield. He is a native of German Township, born February 3, 1819; he is a son of Thomas and Catharine (BAKER) NAWMAN, natives of Virginia. The grandfather, Thomas NAWMAN, is supposed to have been born in Massachusetts. He was one of those resolute men who resisted the English rule and imposition of heavy duties, and assisted in throwing overboard the cargo of tea in Boston harbor, and which, followed by other acts and events, resulted in the war of the Revolution. Thomas NAWMAN, the father, emigrated to Ohio in 1806, coming through the entire journey on horseback, and located in German Township. Soon after his arrival, he was afflicted with a white swelling, during which time he lived with one of the early settlers by the name of FRIARMOOD, with whom he stayed two years; thence returned to Virginia, and, in 1809, came back to Ohio, the entire family of his father coming with him, and here the grandfather and the father lived and died, being truly pioneers of the County, enduring the many dangers and hardships of that early day, struggling with the wilderness, the wild beasts, the Indians, and the difficulties of the war of 1812. But Mr. NAWMAN, the father, lived to see these difficulties overcome, and fine farms take the place of the wilderness, and the hand of civilization to bring forth towns and cities, and the comforts and conveniences of one of the finest countries in the world. He died in January, 1863, aged 82 years. His wife died in April, 1864, aged 79 years. They were parents of seven children, three now living - Samuel, Magdalene and Amanda. Our subject lived with his father until 35 years of age. He was married, August 26, 1855, to Louisa M., daughter of William and Matilda RHONEMUS, he a native of Clinton County, Ohio, and she of Virginia; issue, thirteen children; nine now survive - Thomas W., Henry B., Emma, *Charles L.*, Ida, George W., Jasper G., Oly and Carrie. Mr. NAWMAN, after his marriage, located upon the farm where he now resides, and which has been in possession of the NAWMAN family seventy-one years; the farm consists of 133 acres of land, on Mad River, with good buildings and improvements, constituting a fine farm.

[HI44921] (Research):6/17/2005 In reading some your www.genforum.com discussions of Samuel T. Higgin s, I had some questions. As you may or may not know Sam?s second marria ge was to Elda Snow in 1919 in Caldwell, Canyon Co., ID and he is list ed as living with her in the 1920 ID census. Elda was my great aunt. I w as wondering if you knew when Sam died or where he is buried. I know Au nt Elda remarried Orland Brocker by the 1930 census and was living in Bre a, Orange Co., CA. In the 1920s Aunt Elda had some correspondence with a person named Bobb ie Qualls Anderson and we were wondering what her relationship was with Au nt Elda and/or Sam, because as far as we know, Aunt Elda never had any chi ldren. However, in this correspondence Bobbie refers to Aunt Elda as ?Mom my?, leaving us somewhat confused. We were thinking that Bobbie mig ht be related to Sam's first family, so maybe you can help. We know Sam was first married to Carrie Manzer in Nov. 1878 in Adams Co ., NE and that they had established a family by 1900 in Canon City, Fremo nt Co., CO, but must have divorced by 1907, because we find Sam as a board er and Carrie married to Avery Reed (for 3 years) in the 1910 Fremont C o. census with her two youngest children Wrena and Samuel Higgins living w ith them. Also do you know who Sam and Carrie?s daughters married (I have them as No rena, Lillie I., Gertie M. and Wrena.). We know that young Samuel C. married Nydia Bell Milliner in 1921, but th ey had split by the 1930 census with her in Portland, OR and him in LA, C A. I can?t find that they had children. I haven?t found young Sam?s buri al location either, but SSDI says he died in LA in 1976 and Nydia in Caldw ell, ID in 1966 where she is buried in Canyon Hill Cemetery. Can you help answer some of these questions?

I was wondering if you knew when Sam died or where he is buried. This is s till a mystery to me. I had some hints that it was in California, b ut I am not sure. I have not run across anyone named Qualls nor Anderson, it is not from h is first marriage. My grandmother is Wrena (also spelled Rena). I am att aching my information on S. T. Higgins and family. This was last updat ed last year. I lost my files this year when a data disk got corrupte d, so any new work I do not have. Carrie was married to Avery Reed unt il her death; my dad lived with them for a time. Samuel C. we nt by "Cliff." There are no confirmed children, only family rumors th at he may have had one out of wedlock. My dad still has not remembered wh ere he was buried. This family has been the biggest puzzle of all my gene alogy. I have solved the Manzer question that plagued Sandi and I, and h ad much of the information on the Higgins ancestors. That I had to work o ut kinks on as well, and was part of the corrupted disk. Your informati on on Elda Snow was very helpful as that has also been a puzzle.

[HI44962] (Research):On 8 Dec 1831, Lemuel purchased 105 acres in Wayne Twp. of Champaign Co. f rom Joseph Huffman. This land, known as Lot # 2, was in the Military Surv ey and was part of a 1000 acre tract designated by #6238. It is located ab out two miles east of Cable (formerly Cabletown) on the old railroad lin e. This land became the home of Lemuel and his family for the next 60 year s. After Lemuel's death, many deeds and mortgages were filed by his descen dants. Initially, his heirs each had an undivided 1/5 of Lemuel's combin ed estate. Then in 1885, grandson Lewis's widow, and administratrix of h is estate, wrote a deed for an undivided 1/7 of Elbert's estate to Vermen a. Still later, in 1891, Elbert's widow, Vermena, wrote a deed to her so n, Henry, for an undivided 1/4 of the estate. That same year, Henry so ld or mortgaged 4/7 share of the estate. A detailed study of these documen ts is needed to understand this mathematical progression.

In 1840, the census shows Susannah as head of the household, living with t wo sons, three daughters, and an older woman, possibly her mother. She pro bably m2.1847 Otho JOHNSON in Champaign Co.

[HI45071] (Research):I can find no convincing reason to eliminate this John BLUE as the possib le father of William [P.], John [Q.] and maybe Lenuel [R.]. My data on th is John have not changed since the 4th edition.

1.1.4.4 John BLUE (ca1770-1855), m1.1793 Mary BLUE (d.1830-5), m2.1835 M artha PENDLEY (b.1785). He was born in VA and his first marriage took pla ce in Berkeley Co. VA. John appears to have gone to Hamilton and Butl er Cos. OH with his father, for in 1799 Abraham and John BLUE signed a Me morial to Congress, as settlers "on the Publick lands lying below the mouth of t he Great Miami River Between the said Miami and the Boundary Line Betwe en the United States and the Indian Tribes". This petition requested th at the land be sold in smaller quantities than full sections, and to gi ve the current settlers preference in the purchase of their land. In 18 06 John purchased 80 acres in Butler Co. OH from Evan and Lina BANES. Th is land was the west half of the NW quarter of section 12, township 2, ran ge 2, in the Miami Purchase. In 1811 he purchased the SW quarter (160 a) of section 31, township 2, range 4 east. John and Mary sold the la nd in section 12 to Daniel and David HEATON in 1818. In 1815 and 1819 th ey sold the land in section 31 to Michael PEARCE and Alex VAN FELT. Th ey then removed to newly formed Vigo Co. in western IN, where they appe ar in the 1820 census. They apparently lived in the portion that was brok en away to form Parke Co., for John appears there in the 1830-50 censuse s. Mary died after the 1830 census and before John's second marriage in 1 835, which took place in Parke Co. First marriage: 1.1.4.4.1 Eliza BLUE. Did she m. Lawrence COX? 1.1.4.4.2 Angeline BLUE 1.1.4.4.3* Barnabas BLUE (b.ca1803), m.1838 Polly Ann BROWN (b.ca 1804). 1.1.4.4.4* Abraham BLUE (1807-ca1854), m. _____ _____ (d.bef1850). 1.1.4.4.5 Nancy BLUE (1811-1853), m. William B. CROOKS. Is he 1.1.4.1.6]? 1.1.4.4.6 James BLUE (b.ca1814). Did he m.1837 Mary TURBYVILLE? 1.1.4.4.7 Sarah BLUE, m. _____ WOODS. 1.1.4.4.8 Lucinda BLUE (b.ca1830). Second marriage: 1.1.4.4.9 Perry BLUE (b.ca1843). Deduced from 1850 census.

John BLUE's [Q.] birthdate is a couple of years early, but William and L em fit pretty well; and without more study I can't tell you how valid Joh n's 1791 appears.

Unfortunately the boys had left home by 1820, so that census is of litt le help. However, the timing of their migrations from VA to OH and IN fi ts quite well. They may have all been together in Hamilton/Butler Cos.be fore 1819, then the boys moved to Champaign Co. to be with uncle Henry, an d papa John moved to Vigo Co. IN (later Parke Co.). The key to all this m ay be in the probate court of Parke Co. IN. Both John and his first wi fe Mary probably died there, and their probate records may identify the ir heirs. Anybody game for a trip to Rockville??? Bill

Bill in Seattle seems to feel that William Belongs to 1.1.4.4 John Blue (c al 1770-1855) m. 1973 Mary Blue (d. 1830) who came from Berkely CO. VA mov ed to Butler and Hamilton Cos. in Ohio (That is in the southern Western pa rt of Ohio by the Indiana counties of Franklin and Dearborn. Then they mo ve on to Vigo Co., Indiana which is on the western side of Indiana.

You and I feel this is wrong because of the facts 1) that John (Q) family is to old for this family 2) His possible sons William and Lemuel do not follow him and are in Champ aign County with connection to the above John (Q) family and families of o ther Blues. No real connection to this line.

You and I feel that the better connection would be Cornelius Blue 1.3.1 .6 because of the following facts: 1) Cornuelius Blue is married in 1790 in Berkely Co., VA (good for birt hs of John, William and Lemuel) 2) in 1810 he appears on the Tax records in Cabell Co., VA (we need to che ck to see if we can read these records to see if they mention older sons) 3) He is in Champaign Co in 1818 were he marriage to he second wife tak es place. 4) He owned 160 Acres in in section 33 of Mad River Twp Champaign Co. fr om as early as 1818. 5) He and His wife Ann sells 2 acres to Elizabeth Jones (Who is this Eliza beth Jones) Need to Check this out 6) in 1845 Aquilla Donovan was appointed guardian to younger Children ( we need to find out who this is) 7) We still need to check on the connection of his named children (by Bil l) and John (Q), William (P), and Lemuel (R)

Things we are still trying to work out. John and Eva (K) -- What was their connection to this family if any Uriah Blue mentioned in the 1870 Census living with William's son Simon (who is he) (Is he connected to the family somehow?) Nancy you mentioned someplace (I can't find that note at them moment) and now the Guardianship of Margaret - William's wife by a Johnston? We need to find out somehow from Luther the first name of this Johnston (that is like pulling teeth sometimes)

Now on to Your Thoughts on what we have at the moment and what we still need to make a real connection.

One possibility for the father of the PQR brothers is William BLUE [1.3.1.3]. The birthdates for John [Q.] (1791), William [P.] (1792 or 3) a nd Lemuel [R.] (ca1800) all would fit into his family. It would be nice to s ee William's probate records - ca1830 in Ohio Co. WV.

Thomas Denton Crow was bo rn in Harrison Township, Champaign Co., Oct. 21, 1821. His father, Jose ph Crow, was born in Virginia Oct. 1, 1790, and came of German stock. H is mother, Martha (Hull) Crow, was born Jan. 4,1796, and was of New Engla nd descent. They were married April 9, 1813, and immediately took up the ir residence on a quarter-section of land on the head-waters of Glady's Cr eek, which Joseph had purchased of his father, Thomas Crow, March 29, 181 1. Joseph was a man of more than ordinary education and intelligence, a nd was a Methodist " Class-leader and exhorter." He died in February, 182 5, leaving to the care of his . widow one daughter and four sons. Being th us left on a new farm, she was induced to marry, in 1826, Joseph Longfello w, an old settler of Concord Township, and by this marriage became the mot her of 'six sons, five of whom are still living. She was truly a pioneer w oman, and, after a life of toil and exemplary piety, died Aug. 2, 1864. H er second marriage did not result as she had hoped with reference to her f irst husband's children. One son was sent away at once, and two others so on afterward. Thomas D. became a bound boy on the old Thomas Hines farm wh en 8 years of age. After five years of hardship, during which the school p rivilege stipulated was not allowed him, he was released, and ever afterwa rd was his own master, and was self-sustaining henceforth, his share in h is father's estate having been mostly taken by his step-father. He immedia tely began to plan and look forward to an education. At 14, he began worki ng in Urbana at tailoring, and followed that trade several years. At 1 8, he taught his first school, and at 19 entered the Ohio Conference Hi gh School at Springfield. By teaching during vacation, serving as janit or and performing other services during the odd hours of his school day s, with the practice of the most rigid economy, living on brown bread a nd water a good portion of the time, he succeeded after four years and a h alf, in passing through the preparatory examination, and, although somewh at in debt, entered Augusta College, where he graduated in 1846; out of de bt, and having $400 due him from his alma mater for salary as Princip al of the Preparatory Department. At one time in college, he taught from s ix to ten classes, carried on four to five studies and did duty in a liter ary society, besides being Superintendent of a Sabbath school in the to wn and doing other official church service. On his return to Urbana, the O hio Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church being in session at Piqu a, he was received as a member, and subsequently filled important charge s. He was a member of the Faculty of the Ohio Wesleyan University at Delaw are, Ohio, two years. Owing to domestic difficulties, in 1860, he turned h is attention to law. He graduated at the Cincinnati Law School in April, 1 861. He then entered into a partnership with a brother-in-law at Monticell o, Ind., and practiced there a little more than two years, meanwhile was a ctive in raising troops for the Union army, and, but for his three motherl ess little children, would have himself enlisted. In 1864, he return ed to Urbana and opened a law office. From 1865 to 1866, he had char ge of the public schools of Urbana, and was County School Examiner sever al years. He was Chief Clerk and Acting State Commissioner of Schools fr om 1869 to 1872, during which time he resided in Columbus. In the summ er of 1872, he resumed law practice in Urbana, and has since resided her e, and, by his taste, means and labor, has done much to improve his nati ve county, especially its chief town. He married first, in 1847, Miss Henr ietta Downs. Her parents, William and Elizabeth Downs, were Quakers of Sco tch descent, and early settlers of Urbana. Of this marriage there were bo rn four sons and a daughter. Two sons and the daughter are yet living, t he latter being the wife of a prominent attorney of Cleveland. The two so ns are both practicing law in Urbana. His wife died in Cincinnati in 185 8. The neat year, he contracted what proved to be an unfortunate marriag e, from which he was compelled to seek divorce, the only good as yet appar ent coming of this union being a daughter, now a teacher in the schoo ls of Cincinnati. After six years of single life, he married, May 7, 186 8, Mrs. Eliza M. Crabill, of Clark Co. She was a daughter of Seaton Hedge s, who came from Virginia and settled in Champaign Co. in 1817. Her moth er was a daughter of Robert Miller, who came from Kentucky and settl ed at Moorefield, Clark Co., in 1810. Mr. Crow has been a Republican fr om the organization of the party, with strong convictions favoring prohibi tion. His life has been one of peculiar toil and misfortune, but he has al ways bravely made his way against all obstacles, and, by his native tale nt and perseverance and indomitable will, has compelled success, secur ed a varied and correct scholarship, and established a character above rep roach. He now holds the office of U. S. Commissioner for the Southern Dist rict of Ohio, and enjoys a lucrative practice in his profession.

Sketch of T. D. Crow

Hon. Thomas Denton Crow, who was 71 on Columbian Day, Friday, Oct. 21, 189 2, is a native of Champaign county, OH and is of excellent heredity in bo th lines of ancestry. He was an orphan at 4, apprenticed to a farm er at 8 and released at 13. From that time forward he has wrought out h is own fortune. He learned a trade and worked at it; studied and taugh t. At 25 graduated from College, at which time he was free from debt and t he College owed him a balance of $400.00 for teaching. Was a successfiul M ethodist preacher for fourteen years, two of which he was teaching classic al branches in the Ohio Wesleyan University at Delaware, 0. In April, 186 1, he graduated from the Cincinnati Law school and for thirty-one years h as remained in the legal profession, including three years he spent in t he Ohio State School Commissioner’s office, part of that time was Commissi oner and all the time made the legal decisions for the department. His ent ire experience as teacher in all grades, if put together, would extend ov er a period of five years whilst the entire time he was a pupil in scho ol and college when not himself engaged in teaching others would not exce ed three years. From boyhood he has been interested and active in politi cs and during most of the time has been a contributor to the press, n ot to serve party nor to obtain office, but in order that he might perfo rm wisely and well his entire duty as a citizen and elector in the Republi c. He was always a reformer whenever and wherever he thought reform was ne eded. He was an abolitionist until slavery and rebellion went down. He exp ects to remain a prohibitionist whilst the rum power has a foot hold on ea rth or threatens to return. These principles required him to cease voti ng with the Whig party in 1850 and to abandon the Republican party in 188 3. Two years after this Prohibition party of Ohio nominated him for Attorn ey-General of the State, and his vote ran 2000 ahead of the ticket. At t he recent State Prohibition Convention in Columbus he was nominated for t he office of Supreme Judge (long term) and elected a delegate to the Natio nal Prohibition Convention to meet in Cincinnati, June 29th and 30th, 189 2. Mr. Crow is not an office seeker and never has been. He thinks the offi ce should be permitted to seek the man, and not the man the office. Champaign Democrat, 3 Nov 1892 Abstracted by Pat Stickley

Zachariah mentioned in the "Good Ol Times of McLean Co, IL" pg 495 in a b io of John Price It has to do with Mr. Price killing a problem wolf. "Zachariah Blue offer ed a fine horse for the privilege of collecting the corn, but Mr. Price would accept nothing. He said the f un of killing the wolf was a sufficient reward."

[BI45092] The birthdates of Zachariah and Isabel appear to be too close (3.5 months apart) for them
to be siblings and not close enough to assume they are twins. The birth dates were calculated from their death dates and ages at death as read from their tombstones. Of course there could be errors on the tombstones or errors in reading them.

[HI45098] (Research):This Uriah seems to be the best canidate for the Uriah Found in the 1870 c ensus.

1.1.2.1.2 Michael BLUE (1775-1854), m. Catherine EATON/LENNON (ca1782-186 9)(C157 says CLEMENT) (b.ca1778). He was born in VA and she in PA. Th ey lived in Troy Twp. of Miami Co. OH. She died in Miami Co. In 1805 Mic hael received a federal land grant for the SE quarter of Sec. 7, Twp. 1, R ange 11, in Miami Co. In 1818 he received additional land in the same sec tion from his brother, James. Then in 1819, he sold some of his land in t his section to John KNIGHT. Elizabeth BLUE and Daniel BLUE witnessed th is deed. This Daniel is too young to be Michael's son; he may be [1.3.1.2 .2], who lived in Fairfield Co. OH, or [1.1.1.4.7], who lived in Ross C o. OH. In 1848 Michael purchased Lot OL 16 in Troy from Allen NESBITT a nd Daniel BROWN. In 1850 he received another lot in Troy (#94) from his s on-in law, Thomas G. BARNES, which he transferred to his daughter, Rut h, a year later. In 1850 the value of his real estate was $1900. Micha el is buried at the old Baptist Cemetery in Staunton Twp. of Miami Co. Th ey probably had more than the following children. The 1820 census lists t hem with two boys and seven girls. In 1840 they had four boys and four gi rls living with them.

The inclusion of Henry C. BLUE in this family is uncertai n. An extensive analysis of the descendants of Michael BLUE [1.1.2] was p erformed and this appears to be the most logical place for Henry. Any rea ders who have primary source data tending to support or contradict this co nclusion are urged to contact the compiler at the address given on page i.

In 1840 they migrated to Wel ls Co. IN, where he had obtained a land patent in the NW quarter of Secti on 15 of Lancaster Twp. In 1850 they were living in this township a nd he was listed in the census as being 42 years old, b.OH., with wife Rac hel 42, Mary 19, Lucinda 14, Michael 13, James 10, Catherine 8, Elizabe th 6, Uriah 3, and John 1/12, all b.OH except the last four named. In 18 60 Uriah and his family are still in Lancaster Twp. Uriah was a coop er by trade, having tried his hand at farming unsuccessfully. The Wells C o. history says that Uriah died in 1867, however, in 1870 Uriah appea rs to be living with Simon BLUE in Concord Twp. of Champaign Co. O H. He is listed with no family of his own and his occupation is "common l aborer". In the same census, there is an Ernest W. BLUE (age 14) living w ith William and Emma KUNKLE in Union Twp. of Champaign Co. OH, which provi des a possible connection of this family to those of Champaign Co. (note S amuel and John O. KUNKLE, below). He died in Van Wert Co. OH in 1882 a nd is buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. There are no probate records for e ither Uriah or Rachel in Wells Co., lending support to the probability th at he died in Van Wert Co. OH.

[HI45132] (Research):Per information from LDS web site submitted by Tammy Caroline Swain of Tuc son, AZ, the surname is German and was originally Auer. Immigrated from Si ngen, Germany in the Black Forest region. Arrive in Philadelphia, PA on 9/ 14/1753. Were in Augusta Co and hampshire Co, VA in late 1700's; Meigs, C o, Lebanon, OH abt 1830: !BOOK:Eileen Vickers,CASTO COUSINS;1700's-1900' s; ; ;Family History Library, and some copied pages in possession of Drusilla Falk; ;.

In a little village in Germany called Singen located near Karlsruhe and t he Black Forest lived Johannes Auer. He was born in the early 1700's. Joh annes married Catharina Barbara Methias in 1738 at Karisruhe, Germany. Th ey had a son named Johannes Godfrey Auer, born November 27, 1739.

After being granted permission to leave the principality of Baden-Durlac h, Johannes decided to bring his family to America. They traveled down t he Rhine River to Rotterdam. There they boarded the ship Edinburg where t he quarters were -small and cramped - about 6 x 6. It took a lot of coura ge to undertake such a voyage. To cross the Atlantic took from 6 to 12 wee ks and some people died.

Johannes, Catharina Barbara and John Godfrey Auer arrived at Philadelphi a, PA on Friday, September 14, 1753 according to Capt. James Russell of Ro tterdam, who was the captain of the ship Edinburg. People from the Rhinela nd were Donkers, Bavarians, Mennonites, and Lutherans. The Auers were of t he Lutheran faith.

The family probably waited till spring to travel down the Great Road (R t. 81) which was mostly a trail in the year 1753. They went to Lancaste r, then to York PA. The Potomac River had no bridges, so the pack hors es forded a low place in the river near Shepherdstown, Virginia which is c alled "Pack Horse Ford". from there they went down the Great Road to Winch ester and Harrisonburg and west to a large settlement near the South Bran ch of the Potomac River. (1 Johannes leased a large number of acres from L ord Fairfax for 99 years. Lord Fairfax owned land from Alexandria, Virgin ia to the South Branch of the Potomac which is now in West Virginia.

Times were hard. This was a time of Indian attacks. Fort Seybert was attac ked April 7, 1776 and 22 rangers were killed. The people had to keep an e ye out for Indians as well as make a living and most were farmers. Joha nn Godfrey and his oldest children were killed by indians in 1793 during t he last attacks against whites. !RESIDENCE:Decker's Creek at the site of M organtown, West Virginia in 1781

Actually, I don't want to be a rgumentative but I am entirely sure that the Arthur McClure, who was a D AR patriot is our Arthur. There were two of the same age but I am not open ing that can of worms. At this point, DAR listing for Arthur is the one w ho was Martha's father.

Name: Aquilla DONOVAN Given Name: Aquilla Surname: Donovan Sex: M Birth: 29 Jul 1778 in Maryland Death: 21 Feb 1868 in Brighton,Washington Co,IA Burial: Hillcrest Cemetary,Washington Co,IA IDNO: I9304 Event: 3 REGIMENT (POAGE'S), MOUNTED, KENTUCKY VOLS. Unknown 1812 War Of 1 812 Change Date: 2 Jun 2002 Note: Also Known As:<_AKA> Aquila Donovan; Aquilla Donnavan CENSUS: An elusive character but definitely part of the line of Donovan 's originating from colonial Maryland, moving to KY in the 1790s, then Cla rk Co, OH in the 1820s. Probably moved on to Brighton township, Washingt on Co IA in 1851.

CENSUS: One of the difficulties is that his age is contradicted in the cen sus data, and there are cousins with the same name. Also, he may have h ad father / grandfather (who are known to have moved with the clan) livi ng in same household, which makes head of household age hard to determi ne for pre-1850 census. 1850: Most clearly, this ancestor appears in the 1850 census for German tw nship, Clark Co, OH, page 31 as Aquilla Donnavan, age 63. 1840: Appears in German township (with several brothers, incl. Willia m) as Aquilla Donovan, age 50-60. 1830: Appears in Pike twnship, Clark Co, OH [may not be a move, just a dif ferent census organization].

CENSUS: A J.H. Donovan appears on p. 174 of 1860 census for Washington C o, IA. Could be a son.

BIOGRAPHY: Beilieve Aquilla is latin for Eagle.

BIOGRAPHY: Probably had at least 7 children.

BIOGRAPHY: Served as a private in 3rd REGIMENT (POAGE'S), MOUNTED, KENTUC KY VOLS, during War of 1812.

BIRTH: The Shaof genealogy notes, show him born as 7/29/1778, and dying 2/ 21/1858 in Iowa. Other references (like a reverse count from 1850 census) would make him bo rn about 1787. Others indicate 1783. Since he was married in 1801, my be st guess is the oldest date and that he was misrepresented on the census.

[HI45204] (Research):The only thing the family knew about Emanuel is that he worked for the rai lroad (as a switchman and brakeman) and died in a railroad accident (the f amily was living in Dayton at the time) in about 1890-1891. Don't know wh ere he is buried or when he died.

Until I found a distant relative on the Internet recently (Sharon Morgan ), I didn't even know the names of Emanuel's parents or anything about hi m. I still don't know much. After Emanuel's death, Ida "farmed out" t he children to relatives or friends for a while. Blanche never did retu rn to the family.

[HI45205] (Research):After Emanuel's death, on May 31,1892 Ida married Frederick R. Booth, al so a railroad switchman and brakeman. He may have been a friend or co-wor ker of Emanuel's. The family continued to live in Dayton. The family sa id that after Emanuel's death, the children were farmed out with friends a nd relatives. The oldest, Edward Melvin, and the youngest, Thompson (my g randfather) were supposedly placed in an orphanage for a while. Leon appa rently (according to the 1900 census) was staying with David Richardson a nd (according to the library) Eddie M. Richardson appears in the Childre ns Home Records Index (don't know what year(s)). I would assume that Thom pson was there also. Don't know what happened to the other children duri ng this time. And I don't understand why Blanche was the only child of Em anuel's who never rejoined the family. She remained in Ohio when the fami ly moved to Illinois after 1900 and eventually married Emmett Hoover. S he supposedly died in Dayton about 1967, but I have never been able to fi nd her death record or anything.

Anstine Name

Anstine is an anglicized spelling of the German family name Anstein, whi ch is classified as being of habitation origin. When family names are defi ned as "habitation" in origin they refer us to the residence or home of t he progenitor or founder of the family. The name may indicate that the ori ginal bearer displayed a sign or engraving over the door of his residen ce or it may tell us that this person’s residence was located in a particu lar town or village or indeed that it was located by some distinguishing g eographical or topographical feature.

The family name Anstein originated as a contraction of the German phrase " an den Stein", meaning "on the stone". Thus, the initial bearer of the sur name Anstein would have been one who dwelled on stony ground or perhaps ne ar an outcropping of rock. By the same synonym for "Burg" (castle, fortres s) and it is possible that the family name Anstein would have referre d, in some cases, to a person who resided within a fortified structure. Va riants of the surname Anstein include Amstein and Stein.

One of the earliest references to this name is a record of one Johann Mich ael Anstein, son of Nicolaus Anstein and Anna Barbara Bürg, who was baptiz ed on 2 September 1663 in Neuffen, Württemberg. There is also mention of t he wedding of Waldburga Anstein and Mattäus Fallschär, which took pla ce on 26 October 1697 in Grötzingen, Württemberg. However, resear ch is of course ongoing and this name may have been documented even earli er than the date indicated above. This name was introduced to North Ameri ca as early as 1751, in which year we find a record of the emigration of H ans Georg Anstein, who arrived in Philadelphia.
