DANIEL SPAIN, a native of Virginia, born October 14, 1786, emigrated to O hio and settled in Champaign County, three miles west of North Lewisbur g. He married Agnes Crowder, and in the spring of 1832 removed to this co unty and located on a tract of land where his son, Sanford W., now live s. Here he commenced in the green woods, "not a stick amiss." About o ne year after, in 1833, he died, and the work of making a home and a fa rm devolved upon the mother and her children, who were quite young, the el dest son, John P., being about twenty years of age. In three years afte r, or in 1836, death again visited their family, and took from them this o ldest son. Their other children were Mille, who married Paschal Spain, a nd is deceased; Sanford W., married Matilda Wallace. She died and he marr ied Sarah Ann Shirk, and now resides on the old home farm. Dollie never m arried, and died young; Daniel W., maried Sarah Sheneman, and resides ea st of Sanford W., on a part of the home farm; Clements, married Mary Ja ne Tobey, is now deceased; and Levi E., married Lovina Poling, and resid es on the north part of the home place. It will be observed in the histo ry of this family that after the death of the father, Daniel Spain, thr ee years had scarcely elapsed when the eldest son died, and the care of t he family, the work of making a home and paying for their land devolved ma inly upon the mother and the next eldest son, Sanford, who was then eighte en years of age. They were in the midst of the wilderness, and the prospe ct before them was gloomy in the extreme. But with true pioneer courag e, with willing hands and hearts, they labored on; obstacles give way befo re them, and today they have a good improved farm, with good buildings a nd the comforts of life. Mrs. Spain, the mother, died about 1840.

[HI44204] (Research):CCGS Dec 1998 pg 115 David T Thackery, 45 of Chicago IL and formerly of Urbana, Ohio , passed a way unexpectedly July 17 1998 while jogging in Chicago. He was born in Urb ana June 15 1953, the son of John Thomas Jr and Enid (Dixon) Thacker y. He was curator of Local and Family History at the Newberry Library of C hicago. As head of the Newberry's geneaology department for 15 years, Mr T hackery dramatically expanded the library's services and collections in t he area. In 1988 and 1989 he used a grant to buy microfilm from the Nation al Archives with histories of fermer slaves. He also hired people to go o ut to Chicago schools and community agencies in the African-American commu nity to explain how reseidents could use the new materials to research the ir family history. As a result, the library saw a dramatic jump in patron s, patrons who uncovered secrets from their past. At one point, two peop le working independently at the library, one white and one African-America n, discovered their ancestors worked at the same plantation by using Mr. T hackery’s National Archives research. Those kind of moments made the sta ff realize how important Mr. Thackery’s work was, said Charles T. Culle n, Newberry’s president.Aative of Urbana, Ohio, Mr. Thackery received h is bachelor’s degree from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, a nd later received two master’s degrees from the University of Chicag o, in library science and in divinity. Alter arriving at the Newberry, he wrote dozens of articles and submitt ed regular columns for Ancestry Magazine. He was a regular speaker for gen ealogical societies throughout the Midwest. His book, A Light and Uncerta in Ho14 a history of the 66th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, a CMI War regime nt mostly from Champaign County, Ohio, will be published by Kent State Uni versity Press in 1999 The book details the history and lives of the men w ho served in that infantry, and it consumed much of Mr. Thackery’s intere st for the last several years. He is survived by his mother, of Urbana, O H, and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by h is father in 1977.

TO: Richard A. Pence 3202 Cambridge Court Fairfax, Virginia 22O30

Dear Mr. Pence: Thank you for your letter. in answer to my PENCE query. I am always elat ed to find someone else searching the same lines. And I wish you much lu ck in your efforts to purchase these manuscripts for which you are negotia ting. Ihis Pence line has been the most frustrating of' any I've ever tried. I h ave a generation gap that I cannot bridge. The local Library has a co py of "History of Judge John Pence and Descendants" which you mentione d. It had been the property of a Mrs. Levinnia E. McLean of Tyro, Kansa s, and had been donated to the Independence Public Library by the Author - according to t he file card on it. I have felt reasonably sure that we are a part of th at Pence family, but have never found conclusive proof. One of my Kite correspondents sent me several pages on the Pence famili es zeroxed from the "History of Champaign County, Ohio," 1881, but the re is still a missing link between us. The June 25, 1880 census for Cleveland Twp., Whitley Co. Indiana #554 sho ws my Benjamin Pence to be 45, a farmer, born in Ohio, and both his Fath er and Mother born in Virginia. A nephew, Benjamin, also listed as in t he family at the time of this census was at agree 28, born in Ohio, and bo th his parents were born in Ohio'. This too was sent by the Kite correspondent. I do not have access to census records in the immediate area, and have n ot been able to get to Topeka yet to the Kansas Historical Library. At pre sent I am in contact with a daughter of one of Benjamin's sons, and am hop ing she may be able to give me Benjamin's parents names. I have heard the re is a Capt. (Dr.) Wallace Williamson who is a good source of information on t he Pence family; but unforturnately he is in Viet Nam, and I wish him a sp eedy and safe return. And that is not a selfish wish.

My interest in this family is that It is our direct blood line. My husban d, Maynard Theodore Pence is the son of Maynard (or Manerd) Elysses Penc e, who was the son of Benjamin and Eleanor (Kite) Pence. While we were nev er able to find a birth record for Maynard Elysses Pence, it is thought th at he was born near Urbana, Ohio, on July 7, 1876 shortly before Benjamin and Elean or brought their family to a farm near South Whitley, Indiana. Another so n, Albert, was born after their arrival in Whitley county--this being t he last child born to them. Benjamin the father died in 1881 of snallno x, and is buried in the cemetery at South Whitley as is Eleanor who di ed in 1912.

I have records on the Descendants of Maynard Elysses--of his second marria ge Hoping to hear from you again, and thanking you 'or your interes t. If I might be of assistance in sharing my records, I will be very hap py to do so.

Sincerely,

Polit-ically he was a Republican; thou gh an earnest worker in its behalf, he never aspired to any office whateve r. He took a liberal part in aiding the suppression of the late rebellio n, with which he was connected until his death. [HI44663] (Research):Parentage not proven. Christophers son Joseph named a child Sylvanus. John Merica was in the 1840 Champaign Co, Census (wife nancy Underwood) p g333-31110001-110101

Sylvanus was a Minister of German Baptist Church. He later moved to Kansas then to RapidCity,SD where he is buried. I am wi th in walking distance of the cemetery where the family is buried.

Sylvanus born 13 Feb. 1825 Champaign, Ohio He was a Minister of German Baptist Church married Jemima Rhodes 9 March Churubusco, Ind ten children born to this couple nine at Churubusco, Ind the tenth at Norw ay, Kansas. the family moved to Kansas in abt 1874.

Jemima was the daughter of Daniel Rhodes born 1805 Jan 16.died at Concordi a, Kansas 189?

On the 1880 U S Census census place Eel River, Allen, Indiana Source FHL Film 1254264 National Archives Film T9-0264 page 170A Daniel Rhodes father age 75 Rosanna wife age 45 then comes Jemima (Mrs Sylvance Merica) daughter age 45 Selvanice Merica son M age 10 Jeramiee Merica son m age 8 Jemima Merica daughter F age 6

this shows Jemima and three of her children the three youngest was with h er back with her folks. there are times we have lost Sylvance in the census not able to account f or him in any place. Sylvance and Jemima moved to Rapid City,SD Nov.1901 he died in Rapid Cit y, 24 Jan 1903. Some of their children was here in Rapid City or moved soon as sever al of them are buried at the same cemetery as Sylvance. Jemima remarried after his death not until 29 April 1914 here is Rapid Cit y. She is buried at the same cemetery as him but not together nor is the s econd husband buried with her he is out in a country cemetery.

In some of the info there is a name of Zach which would appear to possib ly be a brother to Sylvanus. I have had contact with the line of Zachari ah but they know very little about him as well other than he was married t hree times and had a total of fifteen children

On the Ancestry Message Board there was a guy by the name of Carl Harbau gh that said that Sylvanus' fathers name was John Merica/Markey. He arriv ed in America in the 1700s with his brothers Christopher and Conrad. He go es on to say that Johannes Markey, later known as John Merica wasa half-br other (I guess to Christopher and Conrad. He says that John Merica was t he beginning of the Merica's on Naked Creek in Rockingham Co., Virgini a. He said that a guy by the name of Charles Fred Medrica did some resear ch on these guys. Seeking proof of parents of Sylvanus Merica or Silvan us Marica or what ever spelling, born in Champaign County in 1825, mov ed to IN, many Sylvanus, Servanus, Silvanus Merica's in Champaingn Count y, but no parents yet proven for this one, he moved to IN, then to KS, a nd eventually to Rapid City SD, where I am, not a relative of mine, b ut I want to find his parents. Parents must have two daughter and son Silv anus and Joseph and Zack likely. When Sylvanus died he had two brothers, o ne in KS, and one in CO, two sisters in KS, any help would be appreciated.

JOEL1 RIDGELL was born Abt. 1763 in South Carolina, and died 1828 in Mari on Co. South Carolina. He married (1) JULIA MURPHY Abt. 1784 in South Caro lina, daughter of DANIEL MURPHY and HANNAH WOODWARD. She was born Abt. 17 65 in Marlboro Co. South Carolina, and died Aft. 1820 in Laurel Co. Kentuc ky. He married (2) MARTHA SWEENY Abt. 1785 in South Carolina, daught er of DARBY SWEENY and MARY ANDERSON. She was born 1763 in Marlboro Co. So uth Carolina, and died Abt. 1819 in South Carolina. He married (3) FRANC ES BECKWITH Abt. 1820 in Marion Co. South Carolina, daughter of HENRY BECK WITH and MOURNING HURT. She was born Abt. 1794 in South Carolina.

Notes for JOEL RIDGELL: Parents of Joel Ridgell are unproven. He could be son of John Ridgde ll of Bush River, Orangeburg Dist., but there's a chance he is son or gran dson of Richard Ridgell Sr. who lived in Bladen Co. North Carolina 1761-17 75, and John Ridgdell of Orangeburg may be an uncle. Mrs. Rebecca Ridgi ll who petitioned for land in Kingston Township, Georgetown, was not far f rom where Joel Ridgell Sr. lived on his Marion Co. Plantation 50 years lat er. Joel Ridgell was also enumerated earlier in 1790 in Prince George Pari sh, Georgetown District, almost exactly where Rebecca Ridgill petitioned f or land in 1737 Kingston. See details on Richard Ridgell Sr. of North Caro lina, and John Ridgdell of Orangeburg Dist. South Carolina. Martha Sweeny 's family (one wife of Joel Ridgell Sr.) had lived in Bladen Co. North Car olina, before arriving in Marlborough Dist. South Carolina. Joel Ridgell J r. of Lexington Co. South Carolina list Orangeburg Dist. as his birthpla ce in 1860 census of Lexington. But at the same time, Joel was enumerat ed in 1790 Georgetown, and 1800 Liberty, now Marion Co. South Carolina. T he Ridgells of South Carolina had plantations all over the state, and poss ibly in North Carolina also. Did Joel Ridgell Sr. travel back and forth fr om Orangeburg to Georgetown ?

According to Leonardo Andreas Genealogical Collection, a Joseph Ridgell S r. is found in Revolutionary War Claims, may be Joel Ridgell who is believ ed to have served with Francis Marion circa 1781-2.

Joel Ridgell had two confirmed wifes in Martha Sweeny and Frances Beckwit h, however ,Family History of the South Carolina Ridgells' who moved to Ke ntucky, have Joel Ridgell having a wife Julia Cottingin (nee Murphy), a nd children John, Delight, Margaret and Sally. John Cottingham did chan ge his name to Ridgell before moving to Kentucky, and may have been fr om an early marriage to Joel Ridgell, then raised by the Cottinghams of Ma rlboro Co. This is somewhat of a puzzler, but I am quite sure these Kentuc ky Ridgells are from this line, who are the only Ridgells who I find the n ame Delight, in South Carolina, Alabama, and Kentucky, also, John Ridge ll of Kentucky named his first son, Joel W. Ridgell.

southwest corner of the state, and it is our belief that this John Riega ll is the person who is discharged from the French Army in 1782.

How then, did the name evolve from Pierre Rigault to John Ridgell? The cha nge in the surname would appear to be quite natural, Riegall is an almo st perfect phonetic spelling of the french pronounciation of Rigault. B ut what about the first name? We submit two theories (1) that it is actual ly Pierre who returned to France with his regiment, and Jean who is discha rged in America, and that the Army records are incorrect, or (2) that Pier re adopted his brothers name on leaving the army because it was more "Amer ican"

Other similar names listed in the l81O census are George Riggle Sr. (si c) and George Riggel,Jr. (sic) , both of Frederick County, Virqinia, who m ay be descendants of John Rieqall.

The 1820 census no longer lists John Rieqa11 or either of the George Rigg1 es, but adds a Simon Riega11 of Wythe County, Virginia, a Joseph Ridqel (s ic) of Frederick County, Virginia, and a Lewis R1dqel (sic)Bu11itt Count y, Kentucky. These additions may well be sons of John Riegall.

In the 1830 census the name of John Ridgell first appears. He 1s list ed as the head of a household In-KnoxCounty, Kentucky, and it is this m an tha that "we believe to be the son of John Riegall (Riqault) and our se cond qeneration ancestor. The change in spelling from Riegal1 to Ridgell s eems quite natural and in this connection, it is interesting to note th at the name Ridgell has, until the last two generations, always been prono unced Ri-gell, with the accent on the last syllable.

Also listed again in the 1830 census are Simon Riegall of Wythe County, vi rginia, Joseph Riggle of Frederick Co, VA, and Lewis B Ridgel of Bullitt C ounty, Kent ky

Based on the foregoing, we believe that Pierre Rigau1t (or Jean, if the re cords are in error}, started toward Kentucky after his discharge from t he Army, but settled for a while in Wythe County, Virginia, where he marri ed and had several children, including Simon Riegall who stayed in Wythe C ounty, Joseph Riqg1e who went to Frederick County, Virginia, Lewis Ridg el who went to Bullitt County, Kentucky, and our second generation ancesto r, John Ridgell, who went to Knox County, Kentucky.

Obviously, this conclusion is based on supposition and additional resear ch is needed. But if our conclusion is correct, then John Riegall (Rigaul t) of Wythe Co' Virginia, is our first generation ancestor in America, a nd his son, John Ridgell,.of Knox County, Kentuckyl is our second generati on ancestor.

(LETTER FROM DR. ROLAND N. STROMBERG TO JESSIE FRANCES BUSH)

June 14, 1966

Dear Frances:

I finally got around today to looking into LES COMBATTANTS FRANCAIS DA NS LA GUERRE AMERICAINE and want to record the results while I can still r ead my notes. I think it was a productive' search. Attend:

There are thousands of names, of course.-- all told some 4,800 French sold iers came over, I think and I almost put out my eyes since the listings a re just random ones, not alphabetized, by regiments. However, I look ed at about all of them and came up with what "seems to me a near certa in hit. Few names resembled "Ridgell". But in the Regiment de Bourbonnais there were two Rigaults, a Jean (b. 175 7) and a Pierre (b. 1752) .There is no proof that these were brothers but. the extreme rarity of the name, which I found nowhere else, and there bii ng in the same regiment, as ,yell as the birth dates, strongly suggests i t. The place of birth was given land was not the same but was in the sa me general area. (For Jean, Tarascon, which of course still exists, a to wn near Nimes in extreme southern France. For Pierre, a village called Reu ssac in "Rouergue." Reussac seems no longer to exist; but Rouergue was a p re-1789 province located roughly where Rodez and Montauban are today, in o ther words only a few miles from Jean's birthplace.) There is no proof th at these are our ancestors but, in addition to the name, which would plaus ibly have been Anglicized as Ridgell, consider the following: Pierre is li sted .as having "parti pour la pension", i.e. left to take a "pensio n" in 1782. This regiment was still in the U.S. in 1782. It sailed back Ma rch, 1783. * Pierre must have resigned from it while it was in the u.s. a nd to "take a pension" must have meant taking some land from the U.S .~ (I have not checked out the details of this arrangement. Further archiv al search is indicated; or perhaps Louis Gottschalk' s study of LaFayet te ,. Rochambeau, and the French who came here tells) .

Jean is listed as having arrived .back in France and been discharged 21 Oc t. 1783. BUT one boat which carried this regiment back to France WAS lo st at sea, quite famously: the United States gave the first ship it ever b uilt to the French in honor of this loss. The story may have got garbl ed in the telling. It looks as if ~he other brother did get back, but th is may. not have been kno\vn and they may have told the story of the lo st ship.

It remains to be added that this was a most distinguished regi- ment, l ed by princes of the blood (a Montmorency, a Broglie; con- sider the na me of it) and took part at Yorktown etc. in a most dis- tinguished way. Yo rktown, of course, was 1781.

You might check this against your better recollection of the tale. The abo ve story indicates that it was the elder brother who stayed here, and th at he was 30 years old in 1782.

I found no other name anywhere near the Earget. This list is not complet e, they say, but must be close to it for it was very extensive. You mig ht also run "Rigault" on your tongue and see how it would have inevitab ly become "Ridgell" in the USA.

The birthplace of our ancestor remains slightly mysterious since, as I sai d, I fou~no modern listing for Reussac, but did track down Rouergue; s ee a good Geographical Dict.ionary. The general area is clear; this mak es us southerners, Provencards I guess. Assuming this is the right part y. I think the evidence is very strong for it.

The book in which I found this (p. 226) was published in 1903 by the Fren ch and contains short histories of each.of the regiments and naval squadro ns, along with the registers. The correct title, I see by my notes, is L ES COMBATTANTS FRANCAIS DE LA GUERRE D'INDEPENDENCE DES ETATS-UNIS 1778-17 83. France, Ministere des affaires etrangeres, 1903. American edition publ ished as Senate Document #77, 58th Congress, 2nd session.

P.S. Enlistment dates were also given. Jean enlisted. 1775; Pierre, the el der, in 1772. Jean might be conjectured as having . joined his broth er as soon as he was old enough, i.e. 18. This regiment was in Corsica bef ore being sent to America. Enlistments were normally for 8 years.

* Look up in 1790 census (Ky. -- to see where Pierre settled.

First, I didn't do the Ridgell Family ms., except for contributing to t he research about the first Rigault/ Ridgell. It was put together by my s ister Frances (since deceased) and her husband Hilary A. Bush There ar e, I know, some errors in it; my copy is scribbled over with correction s. Stilll. Frances, who was a journalist and amateur historian, put a l ot into it and had access to my grandmother (Louisa Wheeler)Ridgell who li ved in Kansas City until her death at age 100. My own research was on t he two French soldiers who came to the US with the French Army under Rocha mbeau (not Lafayette, who never commanded all army) and fought at Yorkto wn in the Revolutionary War's most decisive battle (regiment Bourbonnais ). The records of the French soldiers who fought in the Rev. War were repr inted in a US Senate document of 1903 (#77, 581h Congress 2nd Session) Th ey show Pierre Rigault (b. 1752) being mustered out in 1782 in the US, aft er the battle of Yorktown, because his 6-year term was up, while his (youn ger) brother Jean returned,ta~~an~~ T,..his confirms the family's long-pre served recollection it is not merely an "allegation" as MKj~ink~. I al~o d id a little exploring of the Riga':1lt roots in s. central France, as agri cultural laborers evidently, but that is another story. (1 am, or was a pr ofessional historian, on the faculty at U. ofMaryland, Southern III. U., a nd U. ofWisconsin- -- Milwaukee over the years before my retirement in 198 7. )

The main mystery to me was how Pierre became John., if the French recor ds are correct and they did not get the brothers reversed. Perhaps Jean w as one ofhis names, or he found it easier to be John than Pierre in the U S. A further story is how the ship carrying the French sol~rs back home su ffered a wreck ( a famous event at the time, 1783); the br. here, and t he family legend, thought Jean had died. In fact, many were saved from t he accident and acc. to the records Jean made it home to be mustered o ut in France a little later. Perhaps Pierre took his brother's name believ ing him to be dead At one time I entertained the possibility that lean/Jo hn was 2nd generation, the son ofPierre who died young. But a decisive rec ord is that of a John Ridgell testifying in court in 1823/1824 (in Knox C ., Ky.)in connection with pension claims of revolutionary war veterans ,. as ifhe had been in the war. By that time Pierre/John would have been j ust 71 or 72.. So 1 think Pierre turned Jean was all first generation, th at he lived to a ripe age and did indeed sire Katherine, born 1810, wh en he w~s 58 But then he would had to have sired Stephen Gipson, who was b orn in 1817, at the age of 65. Certainly not impossible, by a younger wif e, perhaps his second. .But here I differ with the Bush account, which thi nks there were two generations here.

~

JOhn RIDGELL, we believe to be the son of John Riegall, our first generati on ancestor. He was, probably born in Wythe County, Virginia. Howeve r, by 1823, he had moved to Knox County, Kentucky, where he is shown to ha ve witnessed pension papers in that year (see Addendum) and where he is li sted as the nead of a household in the 1830 census.

At some time between 1830 and 1840, he moved again, this time to Nichol as County, Kentucky, in the north central part of the state. (Note: Nichol as County adjoins Mason County in which Louisa Wheeler, the wife of o ne of his sons, was born. See Generation 111}.

While we are not certain as to whom he married, one of his sons was nam ed Stephen Gipson Ridgell and on the theory that this son was named aft er his mother's family, we looked up the Gipson family. Eleven Gipsons a re listed in the 1830 census of Knox County, two of them named Jesse. Sin ce the name Jesse or Jessie appears three times in later generations of t he Ridgell line, and twice in the Katherine Ridgell Craig line, we belie ve that John Ridgell married a daughter of Jesse Gipson.

As to his children, we do not have to guess. He had five children. The nam es of these children come to us directly from Louisa Wheeler Ridgell .(.os ee Generation IV) , who was born in Nicholas County, Kentucky in 1847, a nd lived to be 100 years .old. She had personal knowledge of the family a nd related that knowledge to Frances Stromberg Bush (see Generation VI), who not only recorded the fami ly stories so told to her but also prepared from that information a diagra matic family tree, showing the names, dates and places of birth, the dates and places of death, the spouses and the de scendants of these children. (See her notes in the Addendum). It is primar ily from this source, augmented by newspaper obituaries and brought to da te by the knowledge of persons now living, that this history of our fami ly has been prepared.

JOHN RIDGELL, our second generation ancestor, had five children, as follow s.:

1. FANETTA RIDGELL, who was born in Kentucky but moved to Ray County, Miss ouri, before 1850 (she is listed in the 1850 Ray County census), where s he died on January 1, 1869. She is buried in the Penniston Cemetery, ne ar Richmond, Missouri. She was con- sidered to be quite brilliant and an e xcellent musician.

She married RALPH "Rafe" M. LOZIER on December 2, 1855. He was born in Vir ginia but came to Ray county, Missouri, between 1850 and 1855 (he is not s hown in the 1850 census) .They settled in Carrollton, Missouri, and had fo ur children,

She did do a lot of searching in the Draper MSS - several days, in fact. A nd she was then looking for our JOHN KENTON b1751, because she thoug ht he was her ancestor - but found out differently. She did find in that m icrofilm where Benjamin, the son of ELEANOR and JOHN KENTON told Dr. DRAP ER himself, that he [Benj] was 11 years old when his grandmother, JOHN KEN TON'S mother MARY MILLER KENTON, died in 1807. So THAT Benjamin would ha ve been b 1796, and belonged to John and Eleanor KENTON.

I noticed the name "John GRAHAM" signing as a witness. That name cou ld be another link to the KENTONs, as Simon's daughter, MATILDA m a John G RAHAM PARKISON, and several of my MARR relations m into the GRAHAMs and PA RKISONs, and THAT was in MO, so. . . . .I'll get 'em all in MO records ye t! Also, there were GRAHAMs in Greenbrier Co. WVA! Could be same bunch? djd (Dolores J Davis)

Patricia Straube Congratulations, Jim. And thanks, Dolores, for directing him to this valua ble source. This pretty well spells it out that Eleanor (Kelley) Thomps on was the daughter of John and Eleanor Kelley and that her daughter Elean or Thompson married John Kenton. That they sold the land to John Thomps on Jr. for just one dollar (at his own risk) indicates that they probab ly thought it wasn't worth the trouble to travel all the way back to Penns ylvania to claim the inheritance. It may well have been made many years be fore when Eleanor (Thompson) Kenton was still a minor child and they thoug ht their chances of reclaiming it were too small after so many years. T he deed and chancery court records of Bucks Co. might be very interesting. John Jr. was only 23 years old in March of 1800. I had been w ondering how he got the start-up capital to begin his merchantile busine ss and this might be the answer. It would also explain why he left su ch a generous gift of $1000 each (which was a lot of money in those day s) to his two Kenton nieces. There is also the mention of a will for the widow Elean or Kelley. Have any of your indexes turned up something about this, Jim? I 'll bet there are still lots of goodies to be found in the courthouse reco rds in PA, KY and OH. Where land or inheritances were concerned I'm sure t hose Thompsons didn't leave any money lying on the table :-) Patricia

John Kentons Station, Mason Co, KY (Source http://frontierfolk.org/sk-stat .htm) Kenton's Station near Washington, KY Kenton's(?) - The bank is quite bluff from the Station locality, or Blockh ouse, to the Kenton Spring - from 60 feet above the bed of the creek to t he blockhouse & about 35 yards from the Kenton Spring to the blockhouse. T he block house commanded the Spring, an excellent spring. ??? long rifle s hot also commanded the Indian Spring, which was about 110 yards from the b lockhouse: The Station was about a mile N.W. of Washington, KY. The grou nd descended each way from the Station except the West - & on the East sid e, quite abruptly.

A childhood resident of the Station also relates: During 1785 a large addition of settlers was made at Kenton's Station, a nd some 16 or 18 cabins erected, and fully 20 families altogether. The ca bins were erected in a hollow square, adjoining each other-except two cabi ns, between which was a space of some 30 feet which was picketed. No gate- -entered the cabin doors, and these of nights barred with a stout hand spi ke--doors of slabs nearly 3 inches thick: One story cabins: Corners were b lock-houses, higher than the other cabins, and jutting over a foot for def ense. The enclose within the station was about 8 rods by 4--longest w ay of the station along the creek. Some 4 or 5 rods below the station a nd on the hill side a very large fine spring burst out from which a supp ly of water was obtained--this spring had rivulets running a few rods in to the creek.

Some interesting things about Kenton's Station. Even though it was in in t he most exposed area, it was never attacked. Simon's brick house was parti ally rebuilt after the fire that killed Simon's first wife Martha Dowd en in 1796. The house was still standing until 1937. The station proper ty was sold to Samuel Tebbs in 1801 and is now privately owned. There is c urrently interest in an archaeological investigation being organized by t he owner and Kenton descendents.

[HI44814] (Research):Query in Spring 93 CCGS News from Bonnie Zerkle says Nancy Heaston who mar ried John Wones was the oldest daughter of John Heaston and Barbara Penc e. Barbara born 1805 seems too young to have Nancy in 1819. Slso says Barb ara was daughter of Jacob Pence and Elizabeth Widock. But they were marri ed in 1802 and Barbara born 1801.

From Richard Pence April 2005 With respect to your second question, next message: Barbara' line goes lik e this:

1. The immigrant was Johannes Bentz. Lived and died in York County.

2. His oldest son was (John) Michael Bentz who married Maria Catherine Kau ffman. They lived and died in York County.

3. One of their sons was Jacob Bent who was born in York County in 176 2. He married Elizabeth ---?--. About 1790 they moved from York County, Pe nnsylvania, to Rockingham County, Virginia, where some of their 8 childr en were born. About 1811 they moved briefly to Miami County, where so me of the older children lived, but they soon settled in Warren County, Ohio, whe re Jacob died about 1831, While they were in Virginia their surname was Am ericanized to Pence. The YOUNGEST of their 8 children was: 4. Barbara Pence, whose birth is recorded in the records of Frieden's Chur ch in Rockingham County. Barbara remained in Warren County after her marri age.

The above lineage is documented in several ways. First Jacob's birth is re corded in a York County Church, as are some of this children. The immigra nt's will in York names the children, as does the will of his son Micha el and Michael and wife are married in Jacob Pence's birth record. Jacob h ad a son Jacob whose marriage to Christine Shepp in Rockingham County a nd they moved to Miami County and their children are recorded in their fam ily Bible. Finally, when Jacob (the father of Barbara) died in Warren Coun ty, his son John was made administrator of his father's estate (at the req uest of his mother); in the Warren County estate packet their is a lett er from Michael Bentz of York County, Pennsylvania, to John Pence in Warr en County, with the salutation of "Dear Cousin." And - almost forgot - Jac ob and Elizabeth's daughter Mary married Henry Pottorf in Miami County. So me of their children settled in Bureau County, Illinois, and they have let ters from their cousins Paul and Jacob Pence in Miami County which includ es news of various family members - including Barbara Pence's husband, Jo hn Heaston.
