ELISHA YOST
who is one of Sidney's most respected retired citizens, occupying his comfortable residence which is located at No. 219 North Miami avenue, is one of the best known men of Shelby county, his various activities during his earlier years, bringing him into business and social relations with a very wide circle. He was born December 25, 1837, in Morgan county, Va.
Until he was seventeen years old Elisha Yost remained in Virginia, but early in December, 1856, accompanied his uncle, Rev. John Yost, to Logan county, O., and remained with him at Quncy, until the spring of 1857, when he began work at the carpenter trade, having learned the same with his brother before leaving Virginia. In Quincy he worked at the trade with his cousins for a time and then, being curious to see something of other parts of the state, accepted an offer from the American Tract Society and traveled through Logan, Shelby and Champaign counties for several months, selling that company's books. In Champaign county he found other relatives and worked for some of them as a farmer, after which he purchased the carpenter tools of a cousin and went into the building business, and continued until 1862, erecting many houses and barns all through the country, and a Methodist Episcopal church edifice in Champaign county. In the spring of 1862 Mr. Yost moved to Shelby county, and here, on August 11th of that year, he entered the Union army for service in the Civil war, enlisting as a private in Company H, Ninety-ninth Ohio Vol. Inf., and was honorably discharged at the close of that long struggle. During his first year he was connected with the Army of the Cumberland but then was transferred to the Pioneer Corps, that necessary branch of the service that, among its many duties, had the responsibility of building the pontoon bridges. Mr. Yost was present at the fall of Chattanooga and after that was transferred to the Veteran Volunteer Engineers, which built fortifications and probably occupied a more dangerous position than any other body of soldiers, and was made up entirely of skilled men. Although for all these years he lived a life of hazard. Mr. Yost escaped ail injuries and was finally mustered out at Nashville, Tenn., and returned to his home in Shelby county. In the following September he was married and he and his wife resided with the latters father until he built a residence in Champaign county, on a farm of 265 acres, which was purchased from his wife's brother and partly belonged to her, and on that farm they lived for twenty-two years. While at Quincy he had had some experience in the saw mill business, and as he had fine water power on his Champaign county property, he erected a saw mill there and successfully operated it and also made a profitable business of raising tobacco. When he sold his Champaign county farm he moved to Palestine, Shelby county, where he owned 400 acres, 200 of which he has sold. In 1907 he came to Sidney, where he has been a quiet but useful citizen ever since and a liberal supporter of the Methodist Episcopal church, of which religious body he has been a member since January 16, 1857.
On September 12, 1865, Mr. Yost was married to Miss Caroline Weimer, a daughter of Peter and Christina (Dormire) Weimer. Peter Weimer was born in Germany and when he came to the United States as a boy was entirely dependent upon his own industry for a living. After settling in Ohio and securing land he did not have enough capital to enable him to buy a plough with which to break up his land and it was with the only farm implement that he had, a hoe, that he toiled until he could sow wheat for his first crop. This lack of tools caused many early settlers to grow discouraged and abandon the land which they had worked hard to get, but Mr. Weimer was persevering in the face of poverty and through his industry became prosperous and in the course of years one of the large and successful farmers of his section. The mother of Mrs. Yost was born in France. To Mr. and Mrs. Yost the following children were born: Effie May, who is the wife of Edward Miller, a farmer; Olive Myrtle, who is the wife of Asbury Wilson: Dora A., who is the wife of Marcus Partington; Caroline Belle, who is the wife of Lee Sergeant; Mary M., who is the wife of Charles Leever and they live in Cincinnati; Daisy Alberta, who is the wife of O. W. Cook, of Maplewood, O.; Nonna Lavilla, who is a teacher of music, resides at home; and Bonnie Loretta, who is deceased. While never an aggressive politician, Mr. Yost has always taken a good citizen's interest in public affairs. While living in Champaign county he served twelve years in the office of justice of the peace and afterward served six years in the same office in Shelby county. For forty years he has been identified with the Masonic fraternity.

Jacob Allinger was born in Germany, March 16, 183 1, and was sixteen years of age when he emigrated to the United States a nd settled near Sidney, Ohio, on a forty-acre farm. There he continu ed to carry on agricultural pursuits for several years, but turned his att ention later to milling, and followed that occupation at Sidney until 187 1. At that time he moved to Quincy, where he continued to be occupi ed as a miller until his death, May 15, 1903. Mr. Allinger was a man of hi gh business principles who had public confidence and esteem. He married An na E. Steinmetz, who was born in Germany, August 19, 1833, and had co me to this country on the same vessel as her future husband, being at th at time a girl of fourteen years. She died November 21, 1881, having be en the mother of six children: George, who is engaged in the grain busine ss at Sidney; Mrs. Mary Ritter, of Topeka, Kas.; Benjamin; John, who di ed in 1917 at Sidney; Anna, who died in 1904, at Quincy; and Emma, who di ed in 1905 as the wife of Doctor Curl, of DeGraff. Benjamin Allinger secur ed his education in the public schools of Quincy, and from early boyhood a ssisted his father at the mill, which he had helped to build. For forty-fi ve years he has continued to be identified with this industry, and at t he present time is the owner of the property and the business. He has deve loped an excellent patronage, extending over the countryside, and is accou nted a man of good business ability and one who shuns any but honorable de alings. He and the members of his family belong to the Methodist Episcop al church, and his fraternal affiliations include membership in the Indepe ndent Order of Odd Fellows and the Knights of Pythias. Mr. Allinger was ma rried March 11, 1885, to Emma C., daughter of James W. and M. (Barger) Hea th, the former a farmer of Champaign county and the latter a native of t he same county, and both now deceased. Two children have been born to M r. and Mrs. Allinger: Ray Heath, born at Quincy, who is his father's assoc iate in the milling business; and John Herman, born March 3, 1901, w ho is attending school at Ada, Ohio. The mill has been running nearly fif ty years, and it is planned to celebrate its fiftieth anniversary in 1921.

[HI43401] (Research):JAMES FOLEY (deceased). Since the first settlement of Clark Co., there wer e, perhaps, none of its pioneers more widely known throughout its length a nd breadth than James Foley, who was born in Virginia Oct. 4, 1779, and w as the son of William Foley, of that State, who was married twice and w as the father of eighteen children, eleven of whom came to this county, vi z., Lettie, Marian; William, John, James, Rose, Thomas, Absalom, Stephe n, Catharine and Fanny, all being now dead. In 1803, James Foley came on h orseback from his native State, being possessed of very little money, b ut determined to make a home in a country where slavery was unknown, and w here a poor man would have every advantage that liberty and equality guara ntees. He finally, in 1805, settled in Moorefield Township, upon land th at he had previously selected. He was married, at Darby Plains, Ohio, abo ut 1808, to Mary Marsh, daughter of Joseph and Susannah Marsh, nativ es of Virginia, where Mrs. Foley was born Sept. 4, 1784, and of which uni on were born five children, as follows: Griffith, Catharine, Susan, John a nd James, Catharine, the widow of Charles Ward, being now the only survivo r. Mrs. Foley was a sincere member of the Presbyterian Church, and died Ap ril 17, 1855. Mr. Foley was one of the most successful men of Clark Co. Co ming from a State where an education was difficult to obtain, he yet manag ed to pick up the common rudiments of reading; writing, etc., and this, ad ded to his shrewd, natural abilities and his business experience through l ife, rendered his judgment safe, and therefore led to success. His vie ws on slavery may be judged from the fact that, after settling here he we nt back to Virginia and, with the consent of his brothers, brought four sl aves which they owned to this country and gave them their freedom. Qui te an early emancipator was this rugged old pioneer, who began the wo rk of emancipation before Lincoln was born, having inherited that lo ve of freedom from his Irish forefathers, which is such a marked character istic of that race. Mr. Foley was a Captain in the war of 1812, and was am ong those who went to the relief of Hull at Detroit, and his grandson, Jam es Foley, the present Sheriff of Clark Co., has now the sword which he car ried in that war against English tyranny. Politically, he was a Whig, a nd afterward a Republican. Was one of the first Commissioners of Clark Co ., serving several years, and was a member of the Ohio Legislature two ter ms, and also a member of the Masonic fraternity. At the time of his deat h, which occurred Oct. 5, 1863, aged 84, he was the owner of 2,800 acr es of land in the county, 160 close to Columbus, beside a large amou nt of money in bank and on interest, all of which was the result of his o wn efforts as an industrious, economical and honest man. He was a man of r obust constitution, invincible courage and determination, affable in his m anners, fond of a joke, even in his old age, whose companionship was pleas ant, retaining his spirits to the last, and exhibiting that same vigorou s, unyielding will and force of character which were his stepping-ston es to prosperity.

(Research):Logan Co, Ohio Beers History H. C. THATCHER, lumberman; De Graff. H. C. Thatcher was born in Greece Co ., O., Oct. 9, 1843. When but 7 years of age he came with his parents to C hampaign Co.., where he resided until Feb., 1877, when he came to De Gra ff to join his brother in running a saw and planing mill and lumber yar d. The most eventful part of his life was the three years spent in the ser vice of his country. In May, 1861, he enlisted in Company H, of the old 6 th O. V. I. The regiment was referred to Buell's Command, Nelson's Divisio n, Ammon's Brigade, and was in the engagements at Laurel Hill and Carrack 's Ford; then for several months was engaged in a guerilla warfare, in whi ch there were quite a number of battles - Rich Mountain, Beverly, Tigris M ountain and Cheat Mountain. At Tigris Mountain he was one of the picket gu ard who fired on Gen. R. E. Lee and Col. John A. Washington when the form er was wounded and the latter killed, and his remains brought within the U nion lines. In November of that year he, with his regiment, again joined B uell's Command. During the following winter he contracted the measles, a nd was sent to the hospital; the disease left him unfit for duty, and in J uly, 1862, he was discharged from service. In March, 1864, his health rega ined, he again enlisted, this time into the 66th O. V. I., a regiment of v eterans, and belonged to Company G. He joined his regiment at Bridgepor t, Ala., April 1, and was, with his regiment, under Sherman through his mo st glorious career-that "march to the sea," and "on to Richmond,'' and t he grand review at Washington, when mustered out, July 15, 1865 - a campai gn which every soldier who took part in it is proud to recall. He was thro ugh this entire campaign, and, as it happened, was among the first m en to enter Atlanta and Savannah. In all his army experience he never rece ived a scratch, though in some of the severest fighting of the war. Mr. Th atcher was married July 2, 1868, to Miss Phidella McCrosky, of Champaign C o. They have had six children, though two died in infancy, while four so ns are still living - Edwin, Arla, John Wesley and Samuel Herbert -fo ur to fight or vote for the weal of their country. Mr. Thatcher was bere ft of his wife April 10, 1880- "the hardest blow of his life." He has be en a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church since February, 1864, mo st of the time in an official capacity, serving as steward and class-leade r. At present he is a member of the Town Council of De Graff.
DeGraff Journal, Friday, January 8, 1915) DeGraff’s oldest business man has passed away. While the deathof H. C. (Research):JAMES P. LEFFEL, retired farmer; P. O. Springfield. "Father" Leffel is o ne of the few remaining pioneers who are yet left to relate the scenes a nd incidents of early pioneer life in this county. He was born March 29, 1 799, on the banks of the Potomac River, in Berkeley Co,; Va. Of John and M argaret's eleven children. James is the only surviving one. When James w as but 2 years old, his father died, when the care of the eleven childr en devolved upon the mother; at the age of 15, James hired out at $6 per m onth, to work on a farm, and at the age of 18 came to Ohio and to this cou nty, bringing with him his mother and one brother, the rest of the childr en having come some three or four years before. On his arrival here he hir ed to his brother John to work in the mill, and at the end of four years w ent into partnership with his brother, and built the mill now owned by Hen ry Snyder; and after running this mill eight years, his health failed so m uch that he was obliged to quit milling. He then sold his interest in t he mill to his brother John and moved to Medway, where he remained two yea rs, when he removed to his present home. He started for himself with no fo rtune except a good character and willing hands, and has maintained the sa me without a blemish. He owns 1,600 acres of land, besides a considerab le amount of city property. He was married in 1822 to Elizabeth Miller; s he departed this life Sept. 18, 1874. Of their ten children, six are now l iving, viz., Michael, Martin, Joseph, Reuben, Elizabeth and Scott. He h as twenty-five grandchildren.
pg 472 - HISTORY OF CLARK COUNTY. James Leffel, the founder of the extensive firm of James Leffel & Co., bui lt the first foundry, locating it near the first Buck Creek bridge we st of Springfield. The building was completed and operations commenc ed in it in January, 1840. It was in this foundry, while engaged in a gene ral business, that Mr. Leffel began the exercise of his inventive tale nt in producing some practical and useful articles. Mr. Leffel was a sma ll man, of quick perceptions, ready mechanical skill, and with a genius f or invention. He struggled manfully, amid many discouragements, in perfect ing his inventions and bringing them into public favor. A pleasing convers ationalist, a man of indomitable energy, he was upright in all his transac tions. In June, 1845, Mr. Leffel and William Blakeney commenced buildi ng an extensive brick foundry on the north side of Buck Creek, a little ea st of Limestone street. Upon its completion, in the following December, th ey began the manufacture of Buckeye cooking stoves and lever jacks, both i mprovements of Mr. Leffel, besides doing a general foundry business. Mr. L effel died in June, 1866, in the prime of life, just as fortune began to s mile upon him. The business which he had founded was developed by his succ essors, and the manufacture of turbine water-wheels of Mr. Leffel's pate nt has long been a leading feature of the city.
To James Leffel is due the idea. of utilizing the water of Buck Creek in t he city limits, and to Samuel and James Barnett the credit of undertaki ng the project. It had long been a favorite scheme with Mr. Leffel to bri ng a portion of Buck Creek in a race down the north side of its banks to t he foot of one of the main thoroughfares of the town. After persistent arg ument she succeeded in convincing the Barnetts of its utility. As a resul t. the Barnett Water Power and Flouring Mill were built at a cost of $32,O 00, and commenced operations in the fall of 1841. The water-power is durab le, the stream having an abundant supply from numerous springs. The ra ce is one and a half miles in length, giving a fall of twenty-four feet, a nd, at the lowest stage of water, power sufficient to propel twenty r un of stone. The addition of this improvement was an important featu re in Springfield's manufacturing interests. It was an inducement for t he erection of other establishments, and brought trade to a larger exte nt to the doors of our merchants.
Within five or six years after the completion of the flouring-mill, oth er manufactories were erected in the immediate vicinity Mr. Richards. in c onnection with Mr. James Leffel, proceeded to erect a cotton-factory and m achine shop about the same time Messrs. Leffel and Blakeney built their fo undry. A planing-mill and sash-factory, built by James S. Christie and Luc ius Muzzy, followed, and then Rabbitt's old woolen-mill joined in the bu sy hum of industry. The woolen-mill was built on the south bank of this ra ce, four stories in height and forty by sixty feet in dimensions. For ov er twenty years, the manufacture of the best woolen goods and stocking ya rn was successfully continued here. About three hundred feet east of the p laning-mill, Smith Boucher erected on the race a tine oil-mill, four stori es in height, fifty by fifty-six feet. which was afterward owned by Steel e, Lehman & Co., and still later by Mr. John Foos. A more dotailed accou nt of the establishment of these and other manufacturing establishments wi ll be found in a succeeding chapter.
Among the old settlers who came later than the above, mention might be ma de of the following and their places of settlement: John Husted, who settl ed on Donnel's Creek, Section 9; Jacob Funderburg, on Section 9; John Rich inson, on Section 9; and Jacob Leffel, who settled on Section 17 about 181 7. He was a native of Virginia, and had a large family, two of whom, Jo hn and Peter, now reside in Bethel Township, and James in Springfield. Jac ob had the following brothers: Samuel, Daniel, Anthony, John, James P. a nd Thomas, who have all left descendants in this county, who are well kno wn and respected; in fact "the Leffels" is a name that is a household wo rd throughout the State, having gained a world-wide celebrity from the inv ention of the turbine waterwheel by James Leffel, who was long a reside nt of Springfield, but died a few years ago.
About 1818, John and James Leffel erected a grist-mill at this point, a nd John Leffel died soon after, and James run the mill

In about two years, Mr. Kenton sold out and came to his prese nt location on the farm where he has resided most of the time since. Duri ng this career of business, Mr. Kenton, with no capital to commence wit h, has worked his own way, and by industry, economy and good management, a ccumulated a com petency, and is now well situated to enjoy the balan ce of his life comfortably. He was married Sept. 25, 1844, to Bridget Jan e, daughter of John and Jane (Vance) Taylor. They had five children, two n ow survive-Joseph T. and Oliver C. He has never since his marriage pass ed one day in idleness, but always finds something to do, something to gi ve his attention to, which shall tell for the promotion of some worthy wo rk or object of life. And thus has he won the confidence and respect of a ll who know him, and made his success in life.

According to records at the courthouse the town was not platted unti1182 6. Since there were numerous pioneers who settled the surrounding territo ry very soon after 1800, it was from the families of these first settle rs who largely became the first residents of North Lewisburg. There we re several families in the northwest part of Rush township as early as 180 0, but since the military lands at that time were not open for settleme nt these people were squatters and held no title to property. Therefor e, when the land was open for sale almost every one of these squatters mov ed on for parts unknown. In 1803 Hezekiah Spain visited this section a nd liking the country he returned to his home in Dinwiddie county., Virgin ia and purchased from Thomas Browder the entire Military Survey number 46 66 which contained one thousand acres of land. The deed for it was record ed in 1806 and the purchase price for the entire tract would not buy ten a cres of it today. The tract of land lies just west of North Lewisburg, ab out one-half of it in Wayne township and the other half in Rush township w ith a very small corner extending in Logan county. In 1805 the membe rs of several families, with Hezekiah Spain as leader, started their migra tion to Ohio and their promised land. The band of pioneers consisted, besi de Hezekiah, and James Spain, Joshua Spain, Thomas Spain, Stephen Spain, J acob Spain and Willis Spain. Beside the Spains, Hubert arid John Crowder a nd Jordan Reams accompanied the band. Hezekiah evidently purchased the tho usand acres with the intention of dividing it with his relatives for the m ost of the band purchased tracts of 50 to 150 acres from Hezekiah within t he next few years. Those who did not buy from Hezekiah purchased land sou th and east of North Lewisburg. North of North Lewisburg and bordering t he town, also extending up in Logan county, the pioneer family ofLevi Wind er settled about the time Spains were getting established. The Winder fami ly of children according to the deed settling his estate, were as follow s: John, Elizabeth, Aaron, Joshua, James, Abner, Henry, Elizabeth and Cale b. CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, OHIO - Page 220 FIRST PERMANENT SETTLERS.
The Spain family has been credited to both Wayne and Rush townshi ps as probably the first permanent settlers. The facts seem to be that th ey settled in both; one branch settling in the northwestern corner of Ru sh and the other in the northwestern corner of Wayne, their importan ce in the eyes of the early settlers being shown by the fact that the cre ek draining the northern part of the two townships is named in their honor .
Hezekiah Spain came to the township in 1805, the year the county was or ganized, bringing with his a family of several children. At the time Heze kiah Spain came from Dinwiddie county, Virginia, there were probably ni ne other families from the same county who located either in Rush or Wayn e, although at the time the whole territory now in the two townships was i ncluded within Salem township. These other nine families were tho se of J. P. SPAIN (John P., Sr,), STEPHEN SPAIN, JORDAN REAMS, Hubbard CRO WDER, WILLIAM SPAIN, DANIEL SPAIN, JOHN P. SPAIN, JR., THOMAS SPAIN, and J OHN CROWDER. These families came together in 1805 and settled in the nort hern part of what is now Wayne and Rush. The Spains were of German ancest ry (actually English), but had been identified with Virginia since the Rev olutionary War.
Hezekiah Spain bought the entire survey No. 4666, orginal patent holde r, Thomas Browder, the deed for this extensive tract of one thousand and s ixty-three acres being recorded on February 6, 1806. Most of this land li es in Rush township, while part of it is in Logan county, then Champaign c ounty. Spain disposed of small tracts of this survey from time to tim e. A few of these may be noted: THOMAS GOODE and JAMES SPAIN each purchas ed one hundred-acre tracts in the summer of 1809; JORDAN REAMS and GARY GR AY bought fifty- and one hundred and fifty-acre tracts, respectively.

I thought I might share the following with you regarding Capt. John Spa in and his thirteen children. John was the son of William "Batt" (abt 16 98 - aft 1736) and Mary Peterson Spain who married in Bristol Parish, Prin ce George Co., VA.
Mrs. Tower starts out by saying she had researched for thirty years, ha ving started with a Family Tree which her father and grandmother had desig ned. The base of the tree was THEODORIC SPAIN, her gggrandfather. She further states: In 1937, papers of WILLIS SPAIN, a nephew of THEODOR IC, were found by his two ggranddaughters, LINNA & FRANCES WEHE. Soon aft er the discovery the papers were written up for the record by WILLIS' gran ddaughter, EMMA SPAIN GILBERT. Included in the papers were detailed infor mation on his family:
WILLIS wrote; "My grandfather was JOHN SPAIN. He lived in DINWIDDIE COUN TY, VIRGINIA, near Hatcher's Run, a small stream of water thriteen miles w est of Petersburg, Virginia, and one hundred miles from the seashore whe re shad were caught. JOHN SPAIN had nine sons. They were: THOMAS, WILLIAM, JAMES, JOHN, JOSH UA, THEODORIC, HEZEKIAH, MATTHEW & SAMUEL. And four daughters: MARTHA, M ARY, AGNES & POLLY FRANCES. (Research): was referred to your site while trying to establish a connection between my Epps line and the Spains. My dilemma is a result of the unavailability of records from prior to the Civil War in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. My g(3)-gf was Peterson Epes, wife unknown. The only records found by myself or the Epps Society's pro genealogist are a personal tax record and a property tax record for the 1780s. Peterson had at least one child, Daniel Spain Epps, my g(2)-gf). Daniel gave his first daughter the middle name Spain. I stumbled across another site which showed that Peterson had a daughter, Mary Elizabeth, but didn't list Peterson. However this individual did show Peterson's father as being a William Eppes. Unfortunately there are several Williams during the same period and neither reflects Peterson as a son. I was hoping to tie into a Spain researcher who might just have the answer we are seeking. I have yet to get a reply from the person I found last week.
I have tired searching the Library of Virginia databases without success - also the LDS Salt lake City site.
I know that I've been rambling but hope that you might have some possible info regarding Nancy Epps Spain's parents and grandparents.
Thanks for wading through this.
