Wants Pay at WorkhouseFrank Freeze Says He Will Not Work for Nothing
Frank Freeze, who formerly lived in Jackson township, this county. and who recently gained notoriety by at-tempting to take the life of Dr Holmes, of Cincinnati, has just brought fresh notice to himself. This time he seeks to establish a new precedent at the Cincinnati workhouse, in that he desires compensation for work there, to which place he was sentenced by the court. He wanted $10 per week for his services, and said that he would work for nobody for nothing.
There is no doubt about Freeze being unbalanced, men-tally, and he is constantly watched by the authorities, for fear he may undertake to do himself violence. No one is allowed to see him. When he refused to go to work he was sent to the dun-geon and kept there several days, but coming to the conclusion that he had better toil, he was again brought forth and set to work in the machine shop.

Champaign Newspaper abstracts 12/5/1901 Frank Freeze was born and raised in Jackson Twp, and by his own hand qu it his life last Wednesday, in Dayton workhouse, where he commited suicidal hanging. Being raised near St Paris, he was well known and highly thought of in this community. He was married to Miss Verity, the only daughter of the M E Pastor, who years ago served the charge south of town. Aft er his father and mother died he bought a farm at Yellow Springs but later went to Calif. He brought suit against his brother for $20,000 damages for alienating the affections of his wife. Some time ago he had difficulty with a doctor in Cincinnati to whom he threatened bodily harm. He was arrested and sent to Dayton workhouse. This mad him despondent and to a dd to his terror of mind his wife sought a Divorce. His body was brought home Friday and taken to Newsom Chapel for burial. He leaves a wife and six children, though only 43 years old.

Both John and Noah can be sons in this household John 13 and Noah 14 But it bothers me that these same 5 sons are also in the 1840 hoseho ld of Daniel. Noah woudld still be there since he did not marry until 184 2, but John is the question. Since all 5 sons are still in the 1840 househ old, we can eliminate John as a son, as he was living in Clark County 18 40 head of house. Noah shows up in the 1850 census of Champaign County, b ut what heppened to the other sons?

OBITUARY

FLORA ISABELLE NEWCOMB

Flora Isabelle Newcomb, daughter of Howell and Eliza Johnston, was born Oc t. 18, 1858, on the farm east of Rosewood, Ohio, on which her Grandfath er Newcomb settled when he came to this state from New Jersey. Her fath er was born on this same farm, and resided there all his life. She spent h er childhood and young womanhood in the old home, and her entire life w as spent in this community. She died at her home in Rosewood, May 23, 192 5, aged 66 years, 7 months and 5 days.

She was united in marriage to William F. Bailar on November 9, 1876. Thr ee daughters were born to them. They are Mrs. May Hoffman, Mrs Edna Stephe nson, and Mrs Golda DeWeese. On April 23, 1923, their beautiful home li fe was broken by the death of her husband.

At the age of 17 years, she was converted to the Christian faith, and wi th her sister, joined the Carysville Christian church, under the pastora te of Rev. Justice Hunt, who also performed her marriage ceremony. She liv ed a consistent Christian life, and the sweet influence of her life will a lways live in the community. While not a member of the Rosewood U.B. churc h, she was always interested in its welfare, and when her health beg an to fail she was regular in attendance there, because of its nearne ss to her home. She and Brother Bailar were the kind of Christians that c an be happy and useful, anywhere, in the service of the Lord.

She was a charter member of Rebekah Lodge of this place.

Those who mourn her departure are her three daughters, her sons-in-law, M r. John Hoffman, Mr Clyde Stephenson and Mr Grover DeWeese, her four grand children, Lela and Vera Hoffman, Mildred Stephenson and Harold DeWeese, a ll of Rosewood and her sister, Mrs Victoria E. McCrosky, of Delaware, Oh io and many other relatives and friends.

She had been in failing health for about four years, but bore her sufferi ng patiently. She will be missed by all who knew her. To know her was to l ove her. Her every thought was for her loved ones, and not for herself. N ot many families are blessed with the sweet love and fellowship that exis ts in her family, and sweet memories linger with those who are left in t he old home circle.

Historical Collections of Ohio By Henry Howe Vol. I ©1888 CHAMPAIGN COUNTY Page 374 The grave and monument of Gov. VANCE is in Oakdale cemetery, near th at of Simon KENTON. JOSEPH VANCE was born in Washington, Pa., in 1786, of Scotch-Irish stock. In 1805 he came with his father to Urbana, and took all active part in public matters: was a militia officer prior to and during the war of 1812; was member of the State Legislature in 1812; member of Congress from 1820 to 1836, and again in 1843; governor in 1837 and in 1851. While acting as a member of the convention to revise the Constitution of the State was stricken with paralysis, and the next year died on his farm, two miles north of Urbana. In politics he was a Whig of the Henry Clay school; a great friend of public improvements, and one of the first men in the county to import thoroughbred stock.

Beer's "History of Champaign County" says of him: In 1827 he advocated the repair and extension of the National road, then called the Cumberland road, through Ohio and other States of the West, and in a speech in Congre ss in support of a bill before the House, made some hard thrusts at the advocates of State rights. It was at a time when the 'Code' settled such matters, attacks in the House being satisfied in the field. But it was understood not only that the general would fight, but that he was a dead shot with the rifle, and nothing more was said about fighting.

Gov. VANCE was about five feet ten inches in height, with a large frame inclined to corpulency. He had a large head and forehead, and a strongly marked face. The eyebrows were heavy, and the right eye nearly closed, as though pained by the sunlight. He always wore a standing shirt-collar, loose around the neck, and not always square with his chin, and a small black cravat or neckerchief tied with a small bow-knot. At home and among his neighbors he was partial to a blouse and jeans pantaloons, and had a great dislike to the fashionable cut of the latter. In his public life he wore, according to the custom of that day, the conventional suit of black cloth.

To young men whom he met he was pleasant and talkative, and had a happy faculty of describing scenes of public life he had witnessed and the public men he had met, talking in an easy conversational way of the every-day life not often found in the books and papers. As a speaker he had a strong, rich voice, speaking with great earnestness and force, and without the arts of the practised debater, and in the heat of discussion apt to indulge in an argument ad hominem.

February 18, 1889 Alexander F. Vance, Senior, was born August 25, 1811, and died February 1 8, 1889, aged 78.

He was the second son of Governor Joseph and Mary Lemon Vance, and was bo rn on what was known as the Governor Vance farm. He attended Miami Univers ity and was associated with such students as General Robert Schenck, Ho n. Samuel Galloway and others.

After his marriage he lived on what is known as the Eichholtz farm for sev eral years, and then moved to Saratoga, where he took charge of the mill u ntil a short time before the death of his father. His share of the inherit ance was the old homestead farm, where he remained until 1859 , when he mo ved to Urbana, having sold his farm to Edward Jennings.

His first location in Urbana was in the Wright property on East Court stre et~ he then moved into the residence on Scioto street, where he continu ed to live until about seven years ago, when he came to the home on West C ourt street, in which he closed his eyes forever last Wednesday.

After selling his farm and coming to the city he took. in trade, a hat sto re which was then located in the frame building the site now occupied by t he Kersey Roberts shoe store.

In 1861 he was elected Probate Judge of Champaign County, a position he s erved for six consecutive terms, leaving the office in 1879 On the 6th d ay of August, 1835, he married Mary R., daughter of Col. Wm. Ward, who liv ed on the neighboring farm now owned by A. C. Jennings. To them was born f ive sons, William W., Joseph C., of Chattanooga, Maj. A. F., Jr., Joh n, of Chattanooga, and Colly, and three daughters, Mrs. Rev .John Ward, of Merriam Park, Minn., Mrs. Thos. C. Ber ry and Miss Ella P. Vance. Five children have preceded him into the Valle y. One died in infancy, another at the age of seven, Ed. was accidental ly shot about the beginning of the late war, Major D. M. Vance died in Mar ch, 1887, and Miss Elizabeth in April, 1888.

In his younger days he was prominent in military affairs. Under the old mi litary organization of the State he was Adjutant General ofMilitia for th is district. When war broke out he raised a company and was elected its Ca ptain. It was mustered at Camp McArthur and offered its services to the Go vernment at once. But, on account of the State having more men at the ti me than it could dispose of, its offer was declined. He was represent ed in that conflict by four of his sons, one, in the years following the w ar, sacrificed his life in the service of his country by exposure and priv ations on the Western frontier .

For many years Brother Vance was a well-known figure in Masonic circle s. He was initiated in Harmony Lodge May 15, 1845. He held several offic es as had his father and followed by his son, A. F. Vance, Jr.. in 1877.

In September, 1850, he united with the first Methodist church of this cit y. Three years later he took his letter, and with his wife, united with t he First Presbyterian church, on December 30th, 1853. He held offices in t hat church as long as his health permitted.

About five months ago a long and deep-seated trouble began to increa se in irritation and acute pain. It rapidly grew worse, and then he was co nfined in his walks, to his house. His mind was clear, his spirit unbroke n, and his manner as earnest, jovial and kindly as ever. His death bed w as an occasion of triumph. In it the grave won no victory , and death h ad no sting for it was a glorious and happy rest. .

In 1811, he joined the M. E. His wife was a true helpmeet and compani on through life, and a most devoted Christian woman, having joined the chu rch at the early age of 13 years; hence at her death had been a Christi an worker for threescore and ten years. Such was the work and Christian ex ample of these faithful pioneers. Our subject was married, June 13, 184 4, to Miss Sarah G., daughter of James and Martha (Turner) Long, he a nati ve of Kentucky, and she of Pennsylvania, her grandfather, Jonathan Long, b eing one of the early settlers, whose history will enter largely into t he history of this county. (a graduate of Commercial College at Cincinnati), and Jam es L. (a graduate of the high school at Urbana). Mr. Funk has followed agr icultural pursuits through his life; has been a very successful farmer, a nd an earnest Christian man in the M. E. The work he has done for his childr en is a noble one, giving them all a thorough education. to prepare them w ell for honorable and useful positions in life, and thus far they have tak en high positions and are doing well. Politically, Mr. Funk is an earne st and stanch Republican, and usually a delegate to most of their conventi ons.

[HI31965] (Research):Pg 668 History of Champaign Co, Ohio by W H Beers & Co 1881 Christopher METT, farmer; P O Urbana. The parents of this gentleman ca me to this county in 1833 from Page county, Virginia. His father, David Me tt, died eight days after landing in Mad River township. The maiden na me of Mrs METT was Catherine Ayleshire, and she was left a widow at an ear ly age. Three children-Christopher (our subject), Giedeon and Margaret- we re born in Page Co. Mrs Mett was left alone with her three small childre n, in a new country, without friends, and the day seemed dark for her. B eing a good weaver, she picked up a few dollars, and managed to provide f or her children for a time. Christopher was an industrious lad, and work ed at any kind of a job that offered, until he was 13 or 14 years old. H is mother, about that time, received $300 from her fathers estate. She ga ve Christopher $30 of this to be invested in clothes. Instead of doing thi s, he purchased a colt, and again went to work to get another horse. Befo re this was paid for, it died, and this left him again behind. Nothing dau nted, he continued working, and in two or three years he found himself t he owner of two horses and a wagon. He commenced farming, an in a ye ar or two had four horses, and was farming extensively. In 1853, he had $1 000 in cash and a span of horses. This was judiciously invested in land, a nd in a few years he found himself with a fine farm, all paid for, earn ed by his own industry, and in 1865 he sold his farm in Mad River townsh ip for $8000, and purchased his present farm at $10,500. He has ever be en one of the most successful businessmen, and has honestly earned every d ollar he is worth. His marriage, to Mrs. Sarah Smith was celebrated in 184 7. They had no children, and her death occurred in 1850. Mr Mett had rear ed two girls, one of whom, Miss Pernette Mett, married John Evilsizer, a nd they keep house for him. Mr Mett is one of our best citizens and has wo rked hard all his life, but today he can see the fruits of his labors in h is large bank account and comfortable home.

[HI31997] (Research):Do you remember the old coffin factory that stood where the Standard Oil f illing station is now at the corner of West Water and South Main streets?

The factory was operated by the father of the late Albert Stevenson, who w as also an undertaker His barns and carriage houses used in his undertaki ng business were located on West Water street, where the Urbana Hatche ry is now located.

Little boys used to go down to the old sheds and peep through the crac ks to take a look at the horrid hearse, as it was about the only one in ex istence around these parts those days, and was quite a curiosity. The coff ins manufactured by Mr. Stevenson were of the old-style type, and ca me to a point at the foot. They were made of the cheapest of wood and met al material, and sold for from $25 to $75. This price also included funer al expenses.

Later the old coffin factory was moved back and Mr. Dimond began the erect ion of a modern carriage factory which was operated until just a few yea rs ago. The carriage sheds and barns on the south side of Water Street, us ed by Mr. Stevenson, were afterward used by Jack Stinson and later by Joh nnie Acker for a horse shoeing shop. Hit By Train, Dies of Injuries. Sam Benson, Ingersoll farmer, meets death when train crashes into automobi le at Daley Crossing. "I am surely lucky to get out of it alive. I never s aw the train coming. I was thinking of something else as I approached t he track and never noticed the train. It was the first time I had ever cro ssed a track that I can remember of that I did not look for a train. Sa id Sam Benson to W. I.Arganbdght while the latter was taking the injured m an to the hospital.

Sam Benson, well known and highly respected farmer living one mile west a nd three quarters of a mile north of Ingersoll, died at the Alfalfa Gener al Hospital about 10:20 Friday night as a result of internal injuries rece ived when his car, which he was driving, was hit by a north-bound Rock Isl and passenger train at the Daley crossing. Immediately following the accid ent which was witnessed by W.I. Arganbright. Sussman, and waiting passenge rs, Mr. Benson pulled himself from under the wrecked car and walked a sho rt distance before sitting down and asking that he be taken to the hospita l. He was unaccompanied at the time of the accident. According to Mr. Arganbright, who brought the injured man to the hospita l, Mr. Benson was conscious and rational during the entire trip. Mr Arganb dght declares that Mr Benson stated he did not see the train approachin g, that he was thinking about something else and had not looked up as he a pproached the crossing. The train which was running about nine hours late, due to high waters of t he past week, came into Daley about 7:45. The engine pulling the train, w as turned head end to, causing the tender to strike the Benson car. Mr Arg anbdght states that the engine had whistled several times before reachi ng the crossing and that had Mr. Benson noticed, he would haw had plen ty of time to bring his care to a stop. The crossing at this particular po int gives a clear view of the track for about three quarters of a mile. Mr. Benson was know as a careful driver and during the trip to to wn he is quoted as saying that is was the first time he had not given a ra ilroad crossing a careful inspection before driving on. With his mind preo ccupied with business concerning his farm, for at the time of the acciden t, which resulted in his death, he was coming to Cherokee to get some harv est hands who had agreed to work for him. Mr. Benson undoubtedly draw h is car before the train without knowing its nearness. From all appearances and testimony offered by eyewitnesses, Mr. Benson's d eath can be explained only by the word "fate" His time had come, declar ed his friends as they gathered on the streets of Cherokee to talk of t he horrible accident which resulted in the death of one of Alfalfa county 's most highly respected and best loved sons. Quickly the news of the acci dent spread through Cherokee and vicinity Friday night. Saturday morning l ittle clusters of Mr. Benson's friends could be seen talking of the accide nt and death which occurred later in the evening. Always the remarks pass ed were such as denoted the unusually high regard in which the deceased m an was held by friends elsewhere. Like a pall the news of Sam Benson's dea th fell upon the entire community and wrapped those who knew the m an in a shroud of sorrow and grief, for Sam Benson was a friend to all, o ne whose place cannot be filled. Mr. Benson came to this country with his father at the opening of the stri p. For a number of years past he has been farming the odginal homestead no rthwest of Ingersoll, his father having moved to western Texas several yea rs ago. The deceased is a brother of Mrs. Absalom Hunt, whose untimely dea th sorrowed the entire community on May 11 of this year. Samuel Ellis Benson was born at Attica, Kansas, August 11, 1889, The re he grew to young manhood and in 1893 with his parents settled on a cla im near Ingersoll at the opening of the Cherokee Strip. Eary in life he w as converted to the Christian faith and for a number of years was \ery pro minent in church work connected with the Ingersoll Methodist Church. He was a member of the Odd fellows fraternity and was a Past Master of t he Ingersoll Masonic lodge. Throughout his life he bore himself a gentlem an and a true follower of the Faith. Acting on the knowledge of his de bt to mankind, he was always considerate of those about him and through th at consideration won a great host of friends who join the bereaved relativ es in the loss of a most noble man. Besides his wife, the deceased is survived by three children, Elmer and De lmer, age 9, and LaVerda, age 7, his father L.E. Benson of Hurley, Tx a nd four sisters: Mrs Fred Benson, who lives north of Cherokee, Mrs Alma Sh afer and Mrs Earl Body of Alma and Mrs Foster Blan of Frededck OK. Funeral services were held at the Cherokee Methodist Church Sunday afterno on with Rev. Wright formerly of Ingersoll officiating. A testimony to t he affection and esteem with which the deceased was held by his neighbo rs and friends, was the immense crowd which packed the church during the l ast sad rites over his body. Beautiful floral offerings from his relative s, friends, church and fraternities, encased the casket. Special mus ic by the Methodist chair and a wonderful sermon by Rev. Wright, in whi ch he paid tribute to the life of Sam Benson, were parts of the sence. Off icers of the Ingersoll Masonic lodge concluded the service with a brief fu neral rite.. Interment was not made until IO: 00 Monday morning due to the late ariv al of the father from Hurley, Tx. Burial was made in the M.W.A. cemetery w ith the Cherokee Masonic Lodge in charge of the service. A brief funeral o ration was delivered by Brother Frank Azbill.

I don't know where I heard it, but I remember someone saying that he had j ust left the kids out at home and wouldn't let them go to town with him.

Hancock Co, Ohio Beers The pioneers of Findlay deserve more than a passing notice, for to the m, in a large measure, the town owes its present prosperity. The first whi te settler on the site of Findlay was Benjamin J. Cox, but it has been tho ught more appropriate to give a brief sketch of him in the history of t he township. He left the county in 1823, and was never in any way connect ed with the founding or growth of the town, the history of which proper ly begins with the coming of Wilson Vance in 1821, whose subsequent life w as mainly spent within its limits.

Mr. Vance was born in Mason County, Ky., January 19, 1796, his parents, Jo seph C. and Sarah (Wilson] Vance being natives of Loudoun County, Va ., of Irish ancestry. The family removed from Virginia to Kentucky in 178 8, and thence to Greene County, Ohio, in 1800. Four years later they le ft Greene County, and took up their abode in Urbana, Champaign County, a nd here Wilson grew to maturity. In 1816 he went to Fort Meigs, where h is brother Joseph was carrying on a store, and he remained there till h is removal to Fort Findlay. On the 14th of March, 1820, he was marri ed in Champaign County, to Miss Sarah Wilson, by the Rev. John Thomas. S he was a native of Pennsylvania, born June 28, 1801. Mr. Vance returned wi th his young wife to the Maumee, where a son, Joseph C., was born Decemb er 14, 1820. In November, 1821, with his wife and child he started from Fo rt Meigs for Fort Findlay to look after the large landed interests of h is brother Joseph at this point and lay out a town at the fort. He walk ed the whole distance, his wife riding on an Indian pony and carrying h er babe in her arms. Upon reaching Fort Findlay Mr. Vance took possessi on of a story and a half hewed-log house, then occupied by Benjamin J. Co x, the latter moving into a smaller cabin which stood a little farther sou theast. In the spring of 1822 Mr. Vance opened a tavern, his license bei ng issued by the court of common pleas of Wood County May 20 of that yea r, for which he was charged $5. This old log tavern stood on the site of t he present two-story brick (which he erected in after years), on the ea st side of Main Street, near the bridge. His second child, Mary L., was bo rn in Urbana, September 11, 1822, and the third, Miles W., at Findlay, Sep tember 27, 1824, the latter being the first white male child born on the s ite of Findlay as well as in the county. The first grist and saw-mill W as built under the supervision of Mr. Vance, in 1824. It stood on the si te of Carlin's mill and was a small log structure of primitive constructi on and the machinery operated by water-power, but it was a great boon to t he first settlers. In 1832 he put up a one-story frame south of the log st ructure, and in the south room of this building, now the residen ce of G. C. Barnd, on Front Street, Vance & Baldwin opened a general dry g oods store that year. Mr. Baldwin removed to New York in 1837, and Mr. Van ce continued in the mercantile trade in Findlay till 1852, when he sold o ut and retired from business, though still retaining an interest in his so n's store at Bluffton, Allen County. Besides merchandising he was engag ed quite extensively in farming for many years. Mr. Vance and his wife we re the parents of eight sons and four daughters, all of whom were bo rn in Findlay, except the two eldest previously mentioned, and Horace M ., of Findlay, is the sole survivor of the family. The official life of M r. Vance began May 4, 1820, when he was appointed surveyor of Wood Count y, and he filled that office until his removal to Findlay. He was appoint ed the first postmaster of Findlay February 8, 1823, and held that positi on until July, 1829. At the first election held in Findlay Township, Ju ly 1, 1823, he was chosen one of the two justices of the peace; and at t he second election, April 5, 1824, he was elected township trustee and lis ter. In discharging the duties of the latter office he made the first asse ssment of taxable property in Hancock County, and has himself assessed f or one horse and four head of cattle. Mr. Vance was clerk of the cou rt of common pleas from March, 1828, to March, 1835; county recorder fr om the spring of 1828 to June. 1835, and from October, 1835, to October, 1 838; and county treasurer from June, 1845, to June, 1847. He was general ly recognized as an upright man and a kind, good neighbor, but like all ot her men of strong individuality, sometimes awoke hostility in the hear ts of his fellow men by his unswerving determination, bluff manner and stu bborn adhesion to his own opinions. He was dignified in character, and pos sessed a fine personal appearance. Both he and his wife were life-long adh erents of the Presbyterian faith, and the Findlay Church was organiz ed at their house. Mr. Vance died at the home of his son in Orange Townsh ip September 30, 1862, and his widow survived him till March 10, 1866, lea ving behind them an example in many things highly worthy of imitation.

The same fall in which Mr. Vance located at Fort Findlay a Kentuckian nam ed Smith took possession of an old Indian cabin which stood immediately we st of the fort. He cultivated a small patch of ground in the neighbor hoo d, and spent considerable time in hunting, while his wife looked after t he household duties. Smith claimed to understand the use of drugs, and ke pt a small stock of medicines on hand. When Mrs. Matthew Reighly, who liv ed on the John P. Hamilton farm, was taken sick with malarial fever in 182 2, Smith was called on to attend her, but she died so suddenly soon afterw ard that suspicion fell upon the medicine Smith had administered as the di rect cause of her death. In defense Smith claimed that he positively forba de the patient the use of cold water, but she disobeyed his instructions a nd drank copiously, from the effects of which she died. As he was the on ly doctor (?) in the settlement his statement had to be accepted, as no ne could dispute its correctness. After a residence in Findlay of two or t hree years Smith and his wife left the county, and are supposed to have re turned to Kentucky

[HI32312] (Research):JOSEPHINE R. HILL PENCE (Born 12 July 1848; died 20 June 1928) Undated ob it from an unnamed newspaper Died On Farm Where She Had Lived During Entire Wedded Life On last Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock were held the funeral services f or Mrs. Josephine Pence, widow of the late B. F. A. Pence, at the home t wo miles southwest of St. Paris. Her death occurred on Wednesday about 4 o 'clock p.m. Rev. W. G. Price, Universalist minister of Columbus, was in ch arge. Rev. Paul Hoffman sang the hymns, accompanied by Mrs. Hoffman at t he piano and Miss Frances Fromme of Urbana on the violin. Interment was ma de on the family lot in Spring Grove cemetery. Mrs. Pence has been in ill health for over a year but was able to be abo ut the home until a few days prior to her death when her condition continu ed to grow more critical with complications. Mrs. Pence was the daught er of John and Hannah Hill, having been born July 12, 1848 on the farm n ow owned by James Coddington, north of Conover, Ohio. She was united in ma rriage to B. F. A. Pence on her 19th birthday anniversary, June 12, 186 7. They established their home on the farm where she spent the remaind er of her life. Living for several years in a small house, they erect ed a new home in the same yard and it was this place that was destroy ed by fire the 26th of last January. Mrs. Pence again made her home in t he original small structure and it was in this that she passed away at t he age of 80 years. A beautiful new home is under construction on the si te of the one that burned and it was in this house that the funeral servic es were held amid lavish floral tributes. The large attendance at the ser vices was a mute evidence of the high esteem in which she was held and cor dial friendships she had made. Two daughters survive. They are Mrs. Georg ia Cox of Cleveland and Miss Blanche, who lived with her mother and who f or may years had devoted her affection and constant care to her mother's c omfort. A granddaughter, Miss Audra Cox of Cleveland also survives. Mr. Pe nce died July 9, 1920.
