The person w ho died intestate was not mentioned. (Research involving the marriage reco rds 01 Champaign County, have lead this compiler to believe that th is is a Nea] estate.) There were several persons listed, however, not a ll were involved ir the settlement. The amount of inheritance will be list ed in parenthesis. Rachel Neal ($800.26); Eliza Terrell, wife of Jeptha Te rrell ($387.46); Nancy Sparling, wife of John Sparling ($387.46); Jo hn N. Crowl ($26.13 1/2); Joshua C.L. Crowl ($26.13 1/2); James B Arm strong ($387.46) and Harris/Harnes Eby ($77.47)
Research by Denise K Moore- John Neal was born circa 1769 in Delaware according to the 1850 cens us of Harrison Township, Champaign County, Ohio. He died, probably in Harr ison Township, on 18 September 1855, 86 years 2 months 6 days and was buri ed in Springhills Cemetery, in Springhills, Harrison Township. His wife, E lizabeth Neal, was born circa 1777 in Pennsylvania and died 13 September 1 851, aged 74 years, and was buried in Springhills Cemetery. Pioneer Famili es of Eastern and Southeastern Kentucky, by William C. Kozee, A.B., LL.B., Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, MD, 19 73 & 1980, Page 232, Mason County Marriages lists John Neill wed to Bets ey Boyd on 8 August 1799. John B. Neal was listed as a corporal in Capta in Abner Barrett's Company and saw service from 9 August through 9 Septemb er 1813. In the same company were the names of Obadiah Valentine, corpora l; Thomas Sayre, private and David Valentine, private. Members of the Valentine family later moved in to Adams Township. (Reference: Ohio Historical Society for the War of 1812 :http://www.ohiohistory.org/resource/database/rosters.html) This author copied the above listed dates for John Neal and his wife,Eliza beth, in 1982. The cemetery was also copied by the DAR in the 1960s. Ast he gravestones had not suffered as much at the hands of time as my own rea ding in the 1980s they should have been easier to read. However, the peop le who copied for the DAR tended to add data to the gravestones that we re never there in the first place. If the tombstone reflected the da te of death as 2 January 1850, age 50 years 1 day; they would copy the da ta as born 1 January 1800; died 2 January 1850. Recording the tombston es in this way has produced a myriad of problems if the data was misrea d. The dates published by the DAR for John are born 2 July 1769; died 8 Se ptember 1855. John Neal's name was found in the 1811 elector's list of Uni on Township in 1811. However, as most of the children seem to have been born in Kentuc ky (census records) one wonders if this is the same John Neal. The purcha se deed for the land that John acquired in the southeast quarter of Secti on 33 Township 4 Range 13 (Harrison Township) was not recorded in Champai gn County. On 5 February 1829 he sold the east half of this land to Matth ew Cretcher (Deed Book I, Page 12); leaving him owning the west half or ab out 80 acres. On 16 August 1852 John purchased from the Sheriff of Champai gn County, two acres in the southeast corner of the northwest quarter a nd 3 acres in the northeast corner of the southwest quarter of Secti on 33 (Deed Book X, 143). The sheriff would have deeded the land as the re sult of a Chancery Court order to settle an estate. John was seized of t he above listed acreage at the time of his death.Beginning with the fir st quitclaim deed, 11 April 1856, from one Samuel B. Ball, the holdin gs of John Neal were transferred to Samuel B. Neal (Deed Book 31, Page 24 ). The rest of the heirs transferred their interest in John's estate to Sa muel B. Neal as follows: 23 April 1856, Jeptha Terrell (Deed Book B2, Pa ge 549); 3 May 1856, John 0. Cretcher (Deed Book B2, Page 548); 14 March 1 857, S. B. Twadel etal (Deed Book 31, Page 24); 20 October 1857, Hei rs of John Neal (Deed Book 31, Page 25); and 4 May 1858, Sheriff of Champa ign County (Deed Book 31, Page 26). This last entry indicates that there s hould be a probate case that settled the estate of John Neal, however, t he record has not been found.
In Champaign County Chancery Record Book 30, Page 553, filed 19 August 18 63 (James B. Armstrong vs John N. Leach & Others) a listing of John Neal 's descendants is recorded. At this time, Samuel B. Neal was deceased a nd this record is probably the settlement of his estate. The people nam ed were: Rachel Neal; Eliza Terrell, wife of Jeptha Terrell; Nancy Sparling, wi fe of John Sparling; John N. Leach; Samuel Leach Jr.; Margaret Limes; Ma ry Shinn; Eliza Sayler, wife of Joseph Sayler; Rachel Stevens; Harriet Cru tcher; Samuel Twaddell; Joseph S. Twaddell; Samuel E. Clay; James C. Cro wl (also Joseph C. Crowl); Joseph L. Crowl; Samuel L. Crowl; Joshua C. Cro wl; James B. Armstrong and Harris/Harnes Eby (Harriet Eby). The names of J acob Epler and Ben C. Epler need to be added to the list of John's descend ants for on 5 October 1861 they transferred their interest in the undivid ed 1/48th of the west half of the south-east quarter, five acres in the northeast corner a nd 123 acres in the southwest quarter to Rachel Neal (Deed Book 33, Page 6 32). Individual deeds will need to be reviewed for a complete listing of t he heirs. Margaret Town, wife of William Town, died 27 February 1902; buri ed Springhills Cemetery. William C. Town died 26 October 1892, 42 years 10 mo nths 5 days; buried Springhills Cemetery. Margaret appears to be one of t he heirs of this family. As I was unable to locate her marriage recor d, I don't know what her maiden name was. They had an infant son who di ed 2 March 1881 and was buried in the Springhills Cemetery. John Neal's family was lo cated in the Harrison Township census lists in 1820 through 1850. Judgi ng by the census lists for John's children, the family spent sometime in the state of Kentucky.
[HI28643] (Research):Samuel B. Neal probably did not marry. The marriage records of Champaig n, Logan and Shelby Counties were checked but no listing was found for Sam uel. In the 1850 and 1860 census Rachel Neal appears and one tends to beli eve that she may be the wife of Samuel. However, looking at the estate rec ords for both John Neal and Samuel Neal, Rachel appears to this auth or to be a younger sister of Samuel. On 10 December 1833 Samuel B. Neal purchased two acres located in the nor th half of the southwest quarter of Section 33 (Harrison Township) from Wi lliam Ross (Deed Book L, Page 448). Samuel also received quitclaims from Peter Phenegar, John Wilson etal, Dayton Fenstema cher and Abraham Fenstemacher for an undisclosed amount of land locat ed in the south half of the same section between 1843 and 1852. On 18 Janu ary 1854 Samuel purchased 46 acres on the east end of the north half of t he southwest quarter, except for 5 acres (total of 41 acres) from Marcell us B. Dickey (Deed Book Y, Page 495). The land deeds of Champaign County w ill have to be examined to determine by whom and when this land was transf erred. Beginning with a deed dated 11 April 1856 from Samuel B. Ball (De ed Book 31, Page 24), Samuel B. Neal acquired the landed estate of his fat her, John Neal

Family History from Ellen martin
I know that my Uncle Rollie MOSES was the informant for his father's death certificate and he did give Truman and Elizabeth as Joseph's parents. It wasn't the truth and Rollie knew it. Joseph was child of Nancy Jane MOSES and Martin P SMITH but he always lived with Nancy's parents and went by surname of MOSES.Nancy Jane was the daughter of Truman Moses. In 1860 Census Joseph SMITH was 4 years old, but after that he was MOSES. They called him "son" or "adopted son". He was listed as "grandson" along with Truman's heirs, but that was crossed out -- of course, he received nothing since Nancy was still living. Considering Elizabeth's age, "son" was impossible and there seems to be no record of adoption; however, he did live with them and he did use the surname of MOSES. Whatever, Aunt Jennie (SMITH) Whitmore, eldest daughter of Martin P and Nancy Jane (MOSES) SMITH was the best source we know and she was emphatic about Joseph being "adopted." She informed a MOSES family historian, and she left papers (I have them) naming various family groups and explaining some rather complicated relationships: "Adopted" was bold and underlined. Aunt Jennie made it her business to know such things! She was a great talker without being a "gossip" -- wish I'd paid more attention at the time.

History of Champaign Co, OH Beers, 1881 pg 855 HUDSON HAINES, retired farmer; P. 0. North Lewisburg. The above gentlem an was born in New Jersey in the year 1810, July 4; he is a son of Benjam in and Hannah (Hunter) Haines, who were also born in New Jersey, in whi ch State they were married, and from which they removed to and settled ne ar Middleburg, Logan Co., Ohio, in 1820. They were among the early settle rs, bad many hardships and privations to endure, yet they secured a footho ld in the great wilderness, and gradually their labors brought comfort a nd happiness, which tney enjoyed until their decease; his father died in 1 836, aoed about 56 years, and his mother departed this life in 1848, ag ed about 60 years. They were the parents of seven children, six of whom a re living, viz., Judiah, Benjamin, JobD, Elmina, Mary and Hudson, our subj ect; Betsy is deceased. This family and its connections were the first se ttlers in Linn Township, Logan Co., his aunt, Phoebe Sharp, nee Haines, be ing the first white woman in said township. Our subject's early boyhood w as passed in New Jersey, and at the time his parents removed to Ohio he w as only 9 years of age, and, as a natural consequence, he saw his full sha re of the hardships and privations which must be borne in the settleme nt of a new country. His schooling was meager in the extreme, as a mouth 's attendance in a subscription school, to which he walked four miles, con stituted his education. With his parents he remained until he attained h is majority, after which he began life for himself in the green woods wi th one horse, and he informs us he has plowed many a day with a bark lin e. He first purchased 50 acres of land at $2 per acre, on three years' ti me, which was paid for in sugar at 5 and 6 cents per pound. This la nd he held and improved, besides purchasing other land adjoining, on whi ch he lived until 1868, the time of his removal here. He is one of our se lf-made men, having begun life empty-handed, and, by untiring energy and g ood management, has built up a handsome property, consisting of 300 acr es of fine land, a portion of which are now homes for his children. In 18 68, he left the field of labor to seek the quiet of retirement; he purchas ed grounds in North Lewisburg, which he has beautifully improved, and is e njoying the fruits of a well-spent life. In 1831, he was married to Sara h, a daughter of William and Sarah Foster, of New Jersey, and early settle rs in Logan Co., Ohio. To them eight children have been born, five of wh om are living-Wesley, Judiah, John, Caroline and Anna. The deceased are M arshall, Mary and Jesse. The former was a member of Capt. Inskeep's comp any, 17th 0. V. 1. After serving nearly a year, he died in a hospital in N ashville, Tenn., aged 20 years. Mr. Haines and his estimable wife have be en members of the M. E. Church for more than half a century, are exempla ry Christian people, having worked long and faithfully in their master's v ineyard, always discharging the duties of life in the fear of One who rule th and doeth all things well.

Wednesday of last week was an unlucky day for our community. Later in the day, a little son of the late John Huston, while playing with other children in a pile of lumber, at the saw mill of Huston & Sons, managed to upset the lumber, which fell on the boy, breaking his thigh bone and injuring him about the head. Dr. McLaughlin was called, and notwithstanding the serious nature of the injuries, thinks the boy will recover
The personal property of the late John Huston was disposed of on the 20th inst on the Duckworth farm. The place has been rented to Mr G W Taylor, who will take full possession in a few days.
Frank and George Huston, sons of uncle Billy, have gone to Texas, one seeking health and the other a fortune.

Truman's parents were Ezekial/Ezekiel MOSES & Eunice BOGUE - he was a Revolutionary War vet, supposedly buried in unmarked grave in "Upper Honey Creek Cemetery." This must be the little farm graveyard, more commonly known as the SILLS-HUDDLESTON Cemetery, across the road from the much larger Honey Creek Church Cemetery. There was still a path back to it the last time I checked - 5 or 6 years ago. Very few stones left though. Some of Truman's children were buried there.

They located in Harrison Township, Champaign Co ., in 1808, and entered 160 acres of land, which he took from its wild sta te to a good degree of cultivation. In addition to this and supporting h is family, he, at intervals, made purchases, until he was able to gi ve to each of seven children 160 acres of land. Nine children were the fru its of their marriage, two of whom died in infancy. They were members of t he U. B. Church. He departed this life May 20, 1844, and she in Janua ry of 1872. Jacob Sarver, the subject of this sketch, was born Nov. 6, 181 6. He was raised to agricultural pursuits, always residing on the fa rm of his nativity. He is one of the men who have watched the developme nt and growth of this country for more than half a century, and who have s een the sturdy oaks yield to the energy of the pioneers. Nor has he been m erely an idle spectator in the scene, but was an actor to the extent of h is ability. He owns 288 acres of land, most of which is well improved a nd under good cultivation. He has also shared the honors of his townshi p, having served as Trustee for a number of years. Oct. 29, 1839, he was u nited in marriage with Barbara Pence, a daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Pe nce, who were natives of Virginia, but were very early settlers in this co unty. In my search for information for Joseph Wilson born 1792-1793, I came acro ss your information. The Joseph I am seeking was born to Thomas and Hannah Elrod Wilson, in Was hington county Pa. Slowly, I am finding their children. So far, I kn ow of Joseph, John , William and Robert. Robert married Arseneth Bud d, in Washington County. They had a daughter named Polly-- I now think th at this was her nickname and that her Christian name was Mary. I recently received a Wilson bible from 1817. father (the boy being a minor) he stopped at a livery stable in Bellefontaine to feed his horse, a valuable family nag. During his brief stay at the stable, one Alexander Daniels, notorious for his croockedness in horse dealing, managed to get the animal out of young Ford's custody and drove it away. The boy returned home and notified his father of what had occured. Mr Ford proceeded at once to Bellefontaine and in a short time saw his mare upon the street in the hands of a stranger. He procured a warra t fro, Esq Humphries and replevined the mare, T S McFarland appearing for the plaintiff and Dickinson & Walker for the defendants. The defense evidently finding themselves in a strait, proposed a compromise and the case was amicably adjusted, and Mr Ford returned home with his mare.

Joseph Ford, an old settler of Allen County and now largely engaged in farming in Marion Township, was born Sept. 17, 1816, a mile and a half sw of Urbana, Champaign Co., OH and is a son of Joseph and Catherine Snell Ford.
Joseph, the father of our subject, was born near Hagerstown, MD March 4, 1781....... and married April 12, 1803 Catherine, a daughter of Samuel and Christian Snell and born May 4, 1781. (I question whether Joseph was b. near Hagerstown. If so, he should NOT be a son of Joseph and Blanche West Ford who were in Harford Co. MD to the best of our knowledge, in 1781. Also, Catherine Snell was a daughter of Henry Snell and Christine Miller Snell, according to Snell researchers.) ..............after living for a few years in the wilderness in that state (KY) came to Ohio and first located in Champaign Co, in the woods, four miles s. of Urbana, and in due course of time cleared up a good farm. He was also an old time wagoner or teamster, and hauled freight between Cincinnati and Dayton, and likewise teamed for Gen. Wayne's army. To himself and wife were b. ten children, viz: Sarah, James, Christina, Nancy, John, Harrison, (in another write-up there is son John Harrison.....not John AND Harrison. AF) Joseph, WILLIAM, Maly, and one that died in infancy.
(Please note that there is a son William named.AF)
Mr. Ford served as Justice of the Peace for eighteen years, was captain of a rifle company, was a successful farmer, owned 134 acres of land near Urbana, died at the age of seventy-two years, a member of the Methodist Protestant Church of which Mrs. Ford was also a member......
The reasons for including Joseph as a son are circumstantial, but we feel convincing. I must admit that there are huge puzzles concerning this Joseph as being a son of James and Blanche, but here are the clues that are convincing us that he was, in fact, a son of this couple:
. A Joseph Ford signed the marriage certificate for Mary Ford to marry Francis Stevenson in 1800 in Mason Co., KY. To one and all
Anita, you wrote - (Joseph Ford signed marriage certificate for m. of Mary Ford to m. Francis Stevenson in Mason Co., KY in 1800.) Just want to clarify the above statement - actually Joseph Ford signed an "Affirmation of Age" - I have a copy of the original which we obtained at the court house in Maysville, Mason Co. ,Kentucky.
A Joseph Ford was paying taxes in Fleming Co., KY at the same time that Blanche West Ford was there. Fleming Co., KY Tax records, shared by Randy Largent:
I have received a family study "Descendants of John George Schnell and Maria Catharina Langin by John and Winona Snell. The immigrants, b. Germany, were parents of Henry Snell whose da. Catherine m. Joseph Ford in 1803 in Fleming Co., KY. The authors did know of this marriage, (not date or place) but did/do not know more about Joseph. I received this report by courtesy and kindness of Jane Snell Copes. The documentation the authors offer for Joseph and Catherine is: "Nothing is known of her beyond that she was named in her father's will, and that in 1828 she and her husband signed a quit-claim deed releasing to Daniel her share of the Henry and Christena family farm in Warren Co., OH for the sum of $500.00, and that in 1832 Catherine and Joseph Ford appeared before the mayor of Urbana, Ohio to have their signatures certified on a paper which finalized the above transaction."
Henry Snell, fa. of Catherine that m. our Joseph Ford, definitely had land in Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD before the Snells left MD and went to KY in 1795. The biographical write up about Joseph Ford says that HE was born "near Hagerstown", but I now believe that he was NOT.......but rather his spouse Catherine definitely WAS. I THINK that the Snells and our Fords probably met in KY in the late 1700s, rather than having an association in MD. Our James and Blanche WEST Ford were in Harford Co. 1776. Blanche (abt. 1750-aft. 1848) was a contemporary of Henry Snell who took the oath of fidelity in Washington Co., MD in 1777. His da. Catherine was b. 1781 near Hagerstown, in a town called Elizabethtown.

«b»Edward J. Ford«/b»
Edward J. Ford, a worthy representative of one of the old pioneer families of Allen County, resides on a well-developed farm of 93 acres in section 34, Marion township, on the east side of the Auglaize River, situated on the Lima turnpike and the Delphos road. Mr. Ford was born December 19, 1853, near Urbana, on his father's pioneer farm in Champaign County, Ohio, and is a son of Joseph and Isabella (Moore) Ford. Joseph Ford, the venerable father of our subject, who had his 89th birthday on September 17, 1905, was born on a farm situated one and a half miles southeast of Urbana, Champaign County, Ohio, and is a son of Joseph and Catherine (Snell) Ford. Joseph Ford, the grandfather of Edward J. Ford, was born March 4, 1781, near Hagerstown, Maryland, where he lived in peace and plenty on his lands after the close of the Revolutionary War. On April 12, 1803, he married Catherine Snell, who was a daughter of Samuel Snell. She was born May 4, 1781. After marriage, Joseph and Catherine Ford joined the army of pioneers who sought homes in Kentucky, but soon left the rich valleys there, which then were overrun with Indians, and came to the more peaceful settlements in Ohio. Grandfather Ford located in Champaign County, which then, with the exception of scattered clearings, was a dense forest, and cleared a farm situated four miles from Urbana. He was also an old-time teamster and engaged in hauling freight between
Cincinnati and Dayton, Ohio, and likewise did teaming for General Wayne's army. The children born to Joseph and Catherine Ford were: Sarah, James, Christiana, Nancy, John Harrison, Joseph, William, Mary and a babe which died in infancy. For 18 consecutive years Joseph Ford served as a justice of the peace and he also was captain of a rifle company.
He owned a fine farm of 134 acres in the vicinity of Urbana. He died in Champaign County at the age of 72 years. He was a life-long member of the Methodist Protestant Church, and for many years was a deacon. His wife was equally devoted to this denomination. Joseph Ford, father of our subject, the seventh child of his parents family, is the only survivor, and what a vast gulf of history is long life has covered! He was educated in the primitive subscription schools, the sessions of which were held in little log cabins, with none of the luxurious surroundings which the modern child expects both at home and at school. However, these early schools taught thoroughly and elemental principles and turned out able men and women. Mr. Ford, like his father, began to assist in teaming when but a stripling, easily managing the four and six-horse teams which were attached to the immense freight wagons. He recalls one of his early trips which took him through Allen County, when the present flourishing little city of Lima was erecting its first log cabin in the woods. He continued to follow teaming until 1843 and then entered into general farming. In 1844 he married and continued to live in Champaign County until 1854, and then removed to Allen County, settling on a tract of 160 acres, right in the woods, which he had purchased in 1849, the land
being situated in a desirable part of Marion Township. This farm he cleared from the forest and increased its acreage to 100 acres. In his efforts he was assisted by his admirable wife whose frugality and excellent management provided a cheerful, happy home, in which a family of worthy children were reared to respected and useful maturity. On January 5, 1844, Joseph Ford was married to Isabella Moore, who was a daughter of Maj. Thomas and Martha (Dodson) Moore. Major Moore, who was an early settler in Kentucky and a farmer, drover, teamster and soldier, obtained his title in the War of 1812. He was surrendered with
the garrison at Detroit by Gen. William Hull, having cut his way through 200 miles of forest to Detroit from Urbana. Major Moore was the first man to plant an orchard in his county. He was twice married. His first wife was a Miss McConkle, and five children were born to the union. The second marriage was to Martha Dodson, and the following children were
born to this marriage: Jesse, Samuel, William, Isabella and Martha J. The death of Major Moore occurred during one of his teaming trips, his lifeless body being found in his wagon. He was 50 years of age. The children of Joseph Ford and wife were: Dora, deceased, who was the wife of Irenus Stooky; John C., a farmer of Marion township, who is also in the stone business; Mary, deceased, who was the wife of Edward Tucker; Anna, the wife of Henry Boroff, of Hardin County, Ohio; Thomas, deceased; Edward J., of Marion township; Frances, deceased, who was the wife of Sheldon Sarber; Alice, the wife of Rev. George W. Mell, Pastor of the Christian Church at Delphos; Maly, a farmer on the old homestead, who married Emily Lee; and Ollie, who married Charles Morgan and resides on the homestead. The mother of the above mentioned children, full of years and possessed of all the Christian virtues, passed away in the old home in section 2, Marion township, on January 13, 1902. Since 1885 Mr. Ford has lived retired. He has always been identified with theDemocratic party and for a number of his active years served as township trustee. His venerable age causes him to find the larger part of his enjoyment in the associations of the home and heartstone, and he still deeply mourns the loss which bereaved him of his companion of so many happy years. He is held in the highest respect and greatest esteem by the residents of Marion township.

We notice the celebration of the 64th anniversary of our Republican friend Joseph Calland, of Adams township. Joseph was away from home hauling gravel when he learned that a company of but a little less than a hundred was at his home ready to give him welcome. Soon, Joseph, dressed not unlike Joseph of old, was seen coming, tickled almost out of his pants singing aloud, "I-fold the fort, for I am coming." But he was thankful he had friends and gave each a hearty shake of the hand in true pioneer style, and all went well.

I got the date (2 Feb 1887) from family records found in a very old des k. I could check with the descendant who has these papers to see if somet hing has been copied incorrectly. If William James WARD really w as 60 at time of death, that would indicate that he died in 1887 rather t han 1885. Also, 2 Feb 1885 was on a Monday and 2 Feb 1887 was on a Wedne sday if that's any help. Ellen

URBANA PEOPLE SOME WHO WERE RAISED IN THIS CITY AND ThEN MIGRATED TO OTHER PLACES AND W ON DISTINCTION. From Urbana Daily Citizen Nov 27 1889 by Geo A T Probably the most noted person who first saw the light in Urbana, is JO HN QUINCY ADAMS WARD. He began his work as sculptor in moulding’ clay in t his place. Thirty years ago he went to New York. Today he is acknowledg ed to be the greatest sculptor not only of America, but of the world. Urba na looks with pride upon her favorite son. His brother, EDGAR H WARD, is a nother who has won a prominent place in his profession. N’r Ward spent sev eral years in Europe, and ‘then returned to his own country and settl ed in New York, where he ranks with the leading artists of this county.
Beers History Urbana Twp 1881 John Reynolds and William Ward erected the first grist-mill in 1814, conne cting with it carding and fulling, which was the foundation of the prese nt woolen factory of Messrs. Henry Fox & Co.
Champaign County and Surrounding areas. Pg 11 William Ward the founder of Urbana was a Revolutionary soldier. He was bo rn in Greenbrier County, Virginia, December 14, 1752, a son of Capt. Jam es Ward, who was also a soldier in the War for Independence. William Wa rd and his father were both members of the one thousand Virginians under C ol. Andrew Lewis who gave the Shawnee Indians under Cornstalk a thorough d efeat at the battle of Point Pleasant, battle was earlier described in o ne of these articles. Capt. James Ward was killed at the battle ofPoint Pleasant. Upon his dea th the son William stepped into his father's place and led his father's co mpany during the remainder of the battle. A coincidence of this battle w as the death ofCol. William Ward's father and the Indian chief Tecumseh 's father who also was killed in the same battle. Tecumseh's father was Ch ief Tuckashinwa and at the time of this battle Tecumseh was only six yea rs of age. Col. William Ward was present at Logan Elm when the Treaty ofPeace was sig ned between Cornstalk and Lord Dunmore. Both William Ward's and Simon Kent on's names appear on the list of patriots present at the Logan Elm trea ty . William Ward came to this part of Ohio with Simon Kenton and when Champai gn county was organized both Kenton and Ward took up land in what became C hampaign county. When the decision was made to select a site for the county seat, a committ ee who had been appointed to make such selection decided on the proper ty of William Ward who owned one hundred and sixty acres ofwhich our ci ty is a part. Ward, Kenton and Joseph Vance the surveyor were among the fi rst to build houses, which of course were of log construction. All three m en were patriots in the Revolutionary War. Col. Ward died in 1822 and for many years his body was supposed to have re sted in Oak Dale cemetery, but of late the Urbana Chapter ofD. A. R. beca me convinced that this probably was a historical error, and they began a s earch. A discovery was made by Otho Robinson as he was plowing along a wi ld plum thicket when his tractor dropped into a hole. In the hole Robinson found human bones and further investigation uncovered a stone mar ker two feet underground on which was engraved the names ofCol. Ward his w ife and two sons. This was on the Sultzbaugh farm on Route 68 between Spri ngfield and Urbana, which was the homestead of the Col. Ward family. Pla ns are made to restore the grave and headstone and place a suitable mark er on the site
Champaign County and Surrounding areas. Pg 103-106 The William Ward Home October 16,1957
William Ward, Sr., the founder of Urbana, was the owner of all of secti on twenty-three, one-quarter of section nineteen, a half-section of Cla rk county and several patents for other varying sized farms in Champaign c ounty which he held for short periods and then sold to settlers as they ar rived. All this, as well as the lots which he laid out in the county se at town, mark him as the shrewd Yankee trader which the historians have de signated him to have been. William Ward was bom in Greenbrier county, Virginia, December 14, 1752 a nd died on December 24, 1822. ffis body was laid to rest on his farm in Cl ark county beside those of his first wife, Rebecca Ward, and two of his yo ung sons, James and Lewis Ward. On November 27, 1956 the remains of Wa rd and his vafe Rebecca were taken up by Springfield authorities and rebur ied in a small concrete vault in Pleasant Hill cemetery on State Route 4 a bout one mile southwest of New Moorefield. This removal was made to ma ke way for the establishment of new water works for the city of Springfiel d. "Workmen, in disinterring the remains found no clothing, buttons or caske t, just the skeletons of Mr. Ward and his wife. Also they found a brok en headstone bearing the inscriptions: 'William Ward, died Dec. 24, 182 2, aged 70 years. Rebecca Ward, died August, 1805, aged 41 years. Jam es and Lewis, sons of W. and R. Ward'. The water superintendent who w as in charge of the disinterment stated the remains of the two sons were n ot found." (Above paragraph from a copy of the SpringField Sun of No v. 2 7, 195 6.) It strikes me that the remains of William Ward and his wife should have be en removed to Urbana. His home for most of his lifetime spent in the Sta te of Ohio was here at Urbana, and all of his business interests, with t he single exception of the Clark county farm were here in Champaign county . It is most certainly known that he and Simon Kenton came to this secti on in 1798. Each of them secured a grant of land between Urbana and Sprin gfield, Kenton on the east side of Route 68 and Ward on the west side of 6 8. William Ward built a log cabin on his land and lived there until aft er he laid out Urbana in 1805. Ms wife passed away the same year the to wn was surveyed and platted. Ward was among the first to build a ho me in Urbana. It was a double log cabin on lot number 86 at the com er of West Water and High streets. William Patrick, in his chapter in Antrim's History, states this fact a nd says that William Ward was living there at that date. There is al so a letter in possession of Errett Lewis that verifies that Ward maintain ed an office in Urbana and rode back and forth from his farm on horseba ck before he established his home here in town. There is just no way to k now in what year the move from his farm to Urbana took place, but it see ms likely it was soon after the death of Rebecca. Now I come to the main point I want to bring out in this article. The fa ct that on Oct. 20, 1812, William Ward recorded a patent for the southwe st quarter of section 19. He had entered for this tract some years previo us and built the brick house known today as "Nutwood Place", the home of E rrett Lewis and f@ly. This brick home which Ward built is quite possibly the oldest brick hou se in Champaign county. There is no way to prove this but neither is there any record of any bri ck residence being built before this one. Here, from the time the house w as finished until Ward's death, was his home, and in that early day it w as the finest home in Champaign county. Ward was well able to make it s o, for there is little doubt that he was the wealthiest man in the coun ty at the time of his death. His son, Wm. Ward, Jr., received the place as his inheritance and occupi ed the home from 1823 to about 1850. The house, therefore, is entitl ed to first rank in the county as regards age. It was patterned after t he old plantation homes in Virginia and has not been marred by modernizati on. It is a typical old fashion upper middle class home and distinctly sh ows it, inside and out, even today. The Ward house was built of bricks burned where the house was constructe d, quite likely of the clay removed from the basement. Errett Lewis disco vered the foundation of the old brick kiln when he was excavating for a ba throom septic tank. The house contains fourteen rooms with seven of the rooms each having an o ld fashioned fireplace. The fireplace in the kitchen served for the cooki ng of food. No cook stove or range was even known in those pioneer day s. The baking was done in the basement where there is a stone Dutch ov en capable of baking a big batch at one time. On the second floor there is a room constructed for curing and smoking mea t. This is rather an unusual arrangement, but it nevertheless shows eve ry evidence of having been used for that purpose. On the south side of the house there is a large open court patio paved wi th brick. A dug well was about the center of the patio for the water supp ly. The floor throughout the house is inch-and-a-quarter ash flooring preserv ed in excellent shape. In fact, the whole house is excellently preserved. The front entrance is a beautifw arched doorway with window glass on eith er side. The living room and parlor are on either side of a hall entranc e. The living room woodwork is cherry, with walnut woodwork in some of t he other rooms. Errett and Mrs. Lewis have accomplished a wonderful resto ration in this home. William Ward, Sr., was a veteran of the Revolution. His father, James War d, also served as an officer in the same war and was killed at the batt le of Point Pleasant, West Virginia. When Captain Ward fell at this batt le against the Indians, the son, William, who was a lieutenant in his fath er's company, led the command during the rest of the battle. The Wards had a justifiable reason for disliking the Indians. In 1758, Jo hn Ward, who was William's younger brother, was stolen in Virginia at t he age of three and carried away by the Shawnee Indians. It was a sear ch for the younger brother that first brought Ward to the Mad River valle y. Tradition has the story that young John Ward was at the Battle of Poi nt Pleasant fighting with the Indians when his father was killed. Later J ohn Ward met his death in an Indian skirmish with a company of Kentuckia ns under command of Simon Kenton. His brother, Charles, was one of Kenton 's company. From a letter by J. R. McBeth of Springfield, a copy of which Errett posse sses, Mr Ward is described as being a large man, tall and broad shouldere d, with prominent cheek bones and dark auburn hair which he wore in a lo ng queue or pigtail tied with a black ribbon. This hair style was comm on among many of the better class of pioneers. Ward's dress was describ ed as a black frock coat, a black felt hat with high crown and broad br im which was not turned up as some wore them. When riding on horseba ck he wore green flannel leggings tied with ferreting below the knee, In manner he was haughty and decisive as one who would naturally comman d. He was a typical old school Virginia gentleman, kind to his neighbo rs and freely entertaining strangers in his home, especially traveling min isters of all denominations. He had one room with only an outside entranc e, and it was used only when he had an overnight visitor whom he felt he c ould not trust. Ihave exhausted considerable time at the courthouse in an effort to find t he names of William Ward, Sr.'s children. I have histories of the coun ty and nowhere in these histories are the Ward children listed, One histo ry states that Mr. Ward was twice married (which is correct) and was the f ather of eleven children, four by his first wife and seven by his second w ife, but it fails to name any of them. I think the statement about sev en by his second wife is an error. And this is why I think it an erro r. William Ward and Margaret Barr were married sometime between Apr il 5, 1813, and Oct. 20, 1814. Ward died on Dec. 24, 1822. His married l ife with Mrs. Ward could have only been about nine years and seven childr en in nine years is most unreasonable. From the deed records I gleaned the following: William Ward, Jr., and Jo hn A. Ward were both his sons and both were longtime residents of Urban a. Cyrus T. Ward, another son, is listed in the deeds as a resident of Ke ntucky. James A. Ward is listed as being a resident of Kentucky and late r, in 1829, as a resident of Clark county. Charles Ward, I am reasonab ly sure was also a younger son and a resident of Urbana. Two women are al so mentioned in deeds as being his daughters. Margaret Ward Bane was t he wife of Dr. Evan Bane and resided in Urbana. The other daughter was li sted as Mrs. Elizabeth DeCamp, wife of Caleb DeCamp of Butler county, Ohi o. This makes seven children. Two more who died young were James and Lew is, whom I have already named, were on the grave stone of Mr. and Mrs. Wa rd when their bodies were exhumed.
John Quincy Adams Ward, the sculptor, and Edgar Ward, the artist, were h is grandsons, both children of his son John A. Ward.

Champaign County and Surrounding Areas, Pg107 Dr. Evan Bane - Henry Weaver - William Patrick October 30, 1957
Dr. Evan Bane came to Urbana sometime prior to 18 1 0. From informati on I gleaned in the deed records, he was a son-in-law of William Ward, Sr ., the founder of Urbana. The history books mention him quite frequent ly in the capacity of an elective official of the city and as being connec ted with the publication of three newspapers published in Urbana during t he period 1816 to1840. Bane in most cases occupied the position of edit or of these papers. For several years Bane was a member of the Counc il of the city, and about 1825 and '26 he held the position of mayor. Thr oughout his activity as a news publisher, he was continually taking an act ive stand for improving the progress of Urbana. So continuously did he ad vocate his ideas through the columns of his newspapers, that there is no q uestion that many of his constructive ideas were adopted by the city autho rities. During his term as Mayor the minutes of the town council showed th at much improvement was made regarding the condition of the streets, sidew alks and bridges over the town branch. The streets were graded, low plac es filled and the higher points reduced so as to make them a more level gr ade. Gravel, to the depth of one foot in the center with a gradual slo pe to the gutter, was placed on the streets. Gravel sidewalks were constr ucted all over the town. The town branch was deepened and straightened- im provements were made regarding the operation of the market place- and reso lutions were passed providing sanitation control. Perhaps Bane should not have all credit for these improvements. He h ad a council composed of good citizens to work with him. They were Hen ry Weaver, Josiah G. Talbot, Abram R. Colwell, James Cooley and Edmond Cav flier. Dr. Evan Bane lived to be an old man. He died in December 1878 ag ed 80 years. At his death he had been a resident of Powhattan for a few y ears. His wife was Margaret Ward whom he married in 1824.
