(Research):I found this paper in the family bible - the name might help and the re is also a picture of Lucy Brooks included"
The picture of Lucy Brooks is with Ida May Stover-Boyer. Lucy loo ks to be at least one generation older than Ida. I think the picture m ay have been taken sometime in the mid 1920's because there is another pic ture with Hazel Boyer Pence and Aunt Ida Thomas with a very similar backgr ound. Hazel was born in 1905 and she looked to be in her low-mid 20'
The note was handwritten and looked like this...
Ambler - Grandma Brook's mother
Brown - maiden name
Lucy Brooks - Alfred
There was also a line connecting the Lucy to the Brown. I am completely s tumped. Ida May's parent's were Margaret Baker and B. F. Stover. Margar et Stover's parents were John Baker and Eve Bruner. I am not sure if Lu cy can be connected to Margaret Boyer though. Margaret Boyer would have b een Ida's mother in law, and if she was born in 1927, then it would be im possible for Lucy to be Margaret Boyer's mother. I also found on a cemeta ry index a Mrs. Lucy Brown, d. 1929, pg. 402, age 79, b. Ohio, co. Mia mi and then I found a Lucy J. Brooks, d. 1929, pg. 402, age 83, b. MAS S, co. Miami. (Research):Beers pg 474 William Wilson was born in the County Tyrone, Parish Cappia, Ireland, in 1 780. At the age of thirteen, he emigrated to this country with his fathe r, James, and uncle Charles. While on the briny deep, the Captain of the v essel became a victim of that dread disease, the measles, and was unab le to take charge of the ship's affairs. During his sickness, a mutinous p lot was arranged by the seamen, which bade fair to end in bloodshed. The p assengers were in a continual state of apprehension, hourly expecting a ge neral uprising of the sailors. The timely recovery of the Captain subdu ed his men, and no further attempts were made. July, 1794, they land ed at Philadelphia, and, fearful of becoming victims of the yellow fever p revailing in that city, they removed to the country at once. In the follow ing spring they removed to Virginia. William was married to Rebecca Humphr eys, in 1805 or 1806. In the vear 1807, the party again made preparatio ns for a journey, Ohio being their objective point. They squatted in Cla rk County, near Springfield, where they resided four years. In 1811, th ey once more bid adieu to the surroundings and removed to Section 12 of th is township, now the property of William Speece. No reason is given for t he many unsuccessful attempts to become permanent settlers, but they we re undoubtedly dissatisfied with the general surroundings. Removing to Cla rk County, they remained there until 1816, when they returned to this .tow nship and settled on Section 13, near the present homestead; here they end ed their days. Mr. Wilson and his posterity have taken an active intere st in the general affairs of public interest. Mr. W., during the war of 18 12, was detailed to guard the block-house on the lands of Ralph Robinso n, of which mention will be made hereafter, and otherwise assisted in defe nding his fellow settlers. His father died in 1824, he in 1832, his wi fe in 1848. Of his descendants, Mary, born March 13, 1807, in Virgini a, is unmarried and lives on the old homestead ; James, born June 5, 181 1, lives on the section, just north of the homestead; Andrew, born Decemb er 3, 1813, lives on the northeast quarter of Section 19 ; William, born F ebruary 1, 1818, now resides in Ada, Hardin County, Ohio; Margaret, born J une 3, 1820, is unmarried, and resides on the home-farm ; John H., born Fe bruary 28, 1825, died a few years ago. He was a prominent politician, a nd held the office of Township Treasurer a number of years. Was somewhat e ccentric in his habits, but withal an honest and upright citizen. He nev er married

Mr. John Wilson, whose death was announced last week, was one of the most useful men in the west end. He did more to bring around reform among county officials than any other man in the county. Principally through his exertions will public sentiment hereafter demand an exhibit of the doings of all officials who handle the people *s money.

«b»Stores Burned In the Village of Springhill This Morning Had Battle with Flames Terrell's General Store and Burke's Saloon go up in Smoke «/b»- «b»Only Partially Insured.
«/b»Springhill, Ohio, May 23, 1899
A little past 12 o'clock this morning the residents of this place were awakened by the alarm of fire. It was J. M. Terrell's general store, which was be-ing rapidly consumed by the maddening flames. When first seen it was discovered that the fire broke out in the east part of the store in which the dry goods are kept. It burned very rapidly and it was impossible to save any of the contents as the whole interior in a short time was in flames.Just a few feet from Terrell's store was Burke's saloon, which took fire and burned to the ground. All of his bar fixtures burned but the merchandise was saved.Mr. Samuel Curl's house by heroic work was saved but seemed as though it would go up in the flames. John Eby's dwelling just across the street on the west caught fire on the roof, yet the damage was slight.Burning shingles blew in a southwestardly direc. tion for more than a square. The loss occasioned by the fire can not be stated by the writer with any degree of accuracy yet it will amount to several thousand dollars.Mr. Terrell closed his store about 10 p.m. and eve-rything looked well. The cause is unknown, It makes quite a dismal sight where the store room stood. It had been used for a store for over thirty years. It is thought that the saloon was set on fire by someone who wanted to ride the village of the palce. The Terrell stock was insured for $1000 in the Royal Insurance company, while the saloon stock and fixtures were insured for «i»$250 «/i»in the Hartford of Hartford. Thomas Dye of this city represents both companies. No insurance was carried on the buildings.

(Research):EMORY HEDGES, farmer; P. O. Urbana. The father of Emory Hedges, Jonas Hedg es, was born in Berkeley Co., Va., in 1789. His marriage to Miss Elizabe th Robinson, of that county, was celebrated in 1811. They had three childr en, born in that State-Joseph, Mary and Ann. In 1818, they emigrated to th is township, and their entire business life has been connected with its in terests. Jonas was a remarkably successful business man, and his first pur chase of 160 acres was added to until he was owner of 900 acres prior to h is death. He served in the war of 1812, and was a pensioner at the ti me of his death. He built the first house on Sec. 11, Urbana Township, a nd this tract is still in possession of our subject. They were the paren ts of twelve children, five of whom are living Elizabeth Hamilton, Hamilt on J., Samuel R., James R. and Emory. All but James live in the county, a nd will be represented in this history. The wife and mother died in 183 4, and Jonas, her husband, in 1864, at the ripe old age of 74. He lived lo ng enough to see the county interlaced with railroads, and the forests dis appear, and in their stead appear beautiful fields of waving grain. The be st years of their lives had been given to the development of this count y, and too much honor cannot be given to the pioneers who reared famili es of noble sons and daughters to perpetuate their names, who are possess ed of the same spirit of enterprise that characterized their ancestry. Emo ry was married, in 1858, to Nancy J. Gainer, of this township. They have six children living-Jonas H., Rebecca E., Wilber R., Marlay, Ma ry E. and Annie. The children are being well educated, and Jonas has be en engaged in teaching, but as yet has chosen no profession. Their paren ts are both able and willing to give them all an academic education. The f amily history of the Hedges will form a very important part of the biograp hical series of Urbana Township. Mr. Hedges was a volunteer during the w ar of the rebellion, and served in Co. G, 134th Ohio V. I. He served in fr ont of Petersburg, and was principally engaged in doing guard duty on t he Appomattox and James Rivers

He purchased bought land on 10 Nov 18 40 at 45.63 acres, Ohio River Survey, Ohio, USA. He By the year 1810 t he histories estimate that there were at least more than a thousand inhabi tants within the present confines of Champaign county but at that time n ot a single pioneer had settled in the part of the county known today as A dams township. The uninviting aspects of that section prevented settlers f rom locating there. Adams township was an almost impenetrable forest. Bea r, turkey, deer and numerous other kinds of wild animals had taken up the ir abode there, no sign of human habitation was visible. The year of 18 11 marked the arrival of the first actual settler within its bounds. That year Asakel Wilkinson, a Virginian and noted hunter, pushed his w ay into the dense forest and built a home in the southeast quarter of sect ion 14, about two miles almost north of Rosewood. He was a good three mil es from any near settler. On his land were located sulphur springs, whi ch were known to the Indians as having medicinal value. It was also a freq uent camping place for the Indians, but Wilkinson and they were on friendl iest of terms. This old settler, paid for his farm with furs taken from ga me he killed in the forest. Wilkinson was born in 1776, married in Virgini a, they were the parents of four children when they settled in Adams towns hip, three more were born later. Their farm consisted of 260 acres. Numero us Adams township people trace their descent to this pioneer. After Wilkinson paved the way, others soon followed. Henry Ritter was nex t, coming in 1813 from Kentucky where he had taken part in the Indian warf are of 1812. He married Elizabeth Harbour and settled in section 6, his fa ther-in-law having had a patent to the farm. This farm was about two mil es east of Rosewood on the south side of Route 29. The Ritters raised a fa mily of nine children. Seven years later, 1820, James Russell got a patent for 160 acres exact ly across Route 29 from the Ritter farm and the next year William Carnes b ought the quater section east of Russell. The third settler in Adams was Daniel Neal. Neal was born in 1773 in Mary land. He came to Ohio in 1804, was a squatter in the eastern part of Cha mpaign County for nine years. In the meantime he married and in 1813 wi th his wife and five children he bought the northeast quarter of secti on 36 in Adams Township, this was on the west side of the township on ly a half mile from the Shelby county line, Route 29 passing through his f arm at a later date. This was the third farm Neal had cleared and old a ge overtook him before he had this one completed. He died in 1840, the fa ther of 7 children. The Neal cemetary is located on his farm as was al so a Russell cemetery located on the James Russell land in section 6. Neal was l isted as a corporal in Captain Abner Barrett's Company and saw service fr om 9 August through 9 September 1813. In the same company were the names o f Obadiah Valentine, corporal; Thomas Sayre, private and David Valentine, pr ivate. Members of the Valentine family later moved into Adams Township. Da niel Neal's name was not found listed in the rosters of the War of 18 12 of Champaign County. His name was also not located in any of the roster s, for any county, of the Ohio Historical Society for the War of 1812: htt p://www.ohiohistory.org/resource/database/rosters.html.
At the early date that Daniel migrated into Champaign County his family ce rtainly did not travel alone; it was simply too dangerous. However, I ha ve not been able to find any family connections to any other residen ts of Champaign County during that time period. Daniel's family may have t raveled with the family of John Neal, who later settled in Harrison Townsh ip. Perhaps, while John was serving his country in the War of 1812, Dani el looked out for both families. This thought is purely speculation upon t he part of this author.
Research has located what appears to be the marriage of John Neal and h is wife, Elizabeth Boyd of Harrison Township, Champaign County, in Mason C ounty, Kentucky in 1799. As the names of John Neal and Daniel Neal both ap pear in the 1811 elector's list of Union Township, Champaign County, it also should not be impossible to believe the John Neal and Daniel Neal d id know each other and that the families of both men safely followed Sim on Kenton in one of his resettlement parties. As to the tale that Daniel N eal came Champaign County in January 1802 and lived there for ten yea rs is simply fabrication, perpetuated by Reuben H. Neal in the 1881 Histo ry of Champaign County. Reuben H. Neal was born fourteen years after his grandfather, Daniel Neal died! First, one nee ds to remember that all of these histories were compiled because people pa id to have their sketches produced in the books. Quite often today we fi nd that people told stories that could not possibly be true; such as doubl ing the amount of land that was owned and other tales of grandeur. Secon d, but most important, is the fact that the state of Ohio was not formed u ntil 29 November 1802. The first General Assembly, under the State Constit ution, met at Chillicothe 1 March 1803, and at that time eight new counti es were created, among them Greene and Franklin. Champaign County was form ed out of Greene and Franklin Counties in March 1805. In Reuben Neal's sketch it was stated that Daniel located five miles ea st of Urbana (which also did not exist at that time); lived there ten yea rs (circa 1812); served six months in the Indian war (no record, as mentio ned previously) and after the close of the war entered the land in Adams T ownship.
On Pages 459-460 of the 1881 History of Champaign County Daniel is spok en of as being one of the first settlers of what became Adams Township. He re it is mentioned that Daniel left Maryland in 1801, traveled to Virgin ia and remained three years (circa 1804); migrated to the Ohio Territory a nd squatted in the eastern portion of the county for ten years (circa 181 4) and then moved to Section 36. As Daniel Dent Neal is mentioned in th is article he may have given the information and therefore the timefra me is more believable. As previously mentioned, Daniel did make his first payment, at Cincinnati, for the land in Section 36 in July of 1816. On 3 August 1826 D aniel transferred 50 acres from the Adams Township land to Henry Neal (Champaign County Deed Book G, Page 373). On 24 Augu st 1839 Daniel transferred 16 acres to John D. Cory (Deed Book U, Page 409 ). Daniel did not transfer any more land in this section before he died.
On 7 June 1834 Daniel purchased 39 and one-third acres located in the ea st half of the southeast quarter of Section 31 Township 3 Range 13 (Betwe en the Miami Rivers Survey, located directly north of his holdings in Sect ion 36), from John D. Cory (Deed Book L, Page 326). On 7 April 1835 Dani el purchased an additional 36 and one-half acres located on the east si de of the west half (adjoining his holdings) from John D. Cory (Deed Bo ok M, Page 64). Daniel retained ownership of this property until he died. The last public act that I found for Daniel Neal was 18 April 1839 wh en he was an appraiser of the estate of William Greer who died in 1836. Wi lliam Greer held land in Trenton (the town became Carysville in 1835; Refe rence:Champaign County Chancery Court Record Book 16, Page 62).
Daniel signed his will on 5 September 1840 and it was probated on 4 Decemb er 1840 and recorded in Champaign County Will Book B, Page 222. Daniel nam ed his wife, Rebecca, and the following children: Henry Neal, Mary Wilso n, William Neal, Richard Hanson Neal, John Neal, Eliza Marrs, Ann Robins on and Daniel Dent Neal. Rebecca Neal, the widow, and William Neal, the so n, were the executors. The witnesses were John Cory, Samuel Salkeld and Da vid Cory. Daniel's estate packet is A-895. William Neal was the executo r. The packet contains only the inventory and appraisal, which was dat ed 9 March 1841.
There has only been one deed found which transferred the landed esta te of Daniel Neal in Section 36. On 16 September 1853 Richard H. Neal a nd his wife, Charlotte Neal of Noble County, Indiana, issued a quitcla im to Daniel D. Neal for the northeast quarter (Deed Book 33, Page 193) (R eference: Section Index for 36). The land in Section 31 was transferr ed by a series of quitclaim deeds to Daniel D. Neal beginning in 186 2: 17 February 1862 James Marrs (Deed Book 33, Page 195); 17 March 1862 Ri chard H. Neal (Deed Book 33, Page 194); 27 March 1862 John Neal (Deed Bo ok 33, Page 195); 17 October 1862, Henry Robinson (Deed Book 33, Page 321); 18 February 1863 Henry Neal (De ed Book 34, Page 13); 21 July 1863 Thomas H. Wilson (Deed Book 34, Page 33 9) and 19 March 1864 Sarah H. Neal, Administratrix of the estate of Willi am Neal (Deed Book 35, Page 143).
By 12 February 1857 William Neal, son of Daniel and Rebecca Neal, had di ed in Sidney, Shelby County, Ohio (Probate Court Record). Through the Prob ate Court in Shelby County, on 2 March 1864, Daniel Dent Neal had purchas ed William's share of his father's estate (39.36 acres in Section 31), whi ch had been valued at $75.00 (Shelby County Probate Court Record, fil ed 10 November 1863).

Jonas was a prominent local politician in his day, and was one of t he first to espouse the principles of the Republican party in this count y. He was one of the originators of the "Know-Nothing " party, and was t he third enrolling his name on their roster. He was largely engaged in t he settling of estates, in which he gave universal satisfaction. He w as a remarkable mathematician, although not having a collegiate educatio n, and was largely endowed with a spirit of enterprise, being foremo st in anything looking toward moral and social advancement. Having a co ol head and being a close observer of matters pertaining to the business i nterests of the neighborhood, his judgment could always be relied on, a nd he seldom made a mistake. His death was greatly felt in the locali ty in which he lived so long. James and his two sisters, Mary and Elizabet h, were given a collegiate education, the others attending only the comm on schools. All, however, received a good English education, which has do ne much to make them the practical business men and women that so ably rep resent the name. The marriage of Hamilton and Miss Ruth E. One of the wealthiest and most infuential men of the county
Champaign Co, Ohio Beers History SIMEON TAYLOR, farmer and Justice of the Peace; P. O. Westville. The subje ct of this sketch is one of the prominent men of Mad River Townshi p; he is a son of Benjamin S. and Sarah (Miller) Taylor. Benjamin was a na tive of Tennessee, coming to this county probably in 1810; he was born Ju ly 24, 1805. Sarah Miller, his wife, was born July 31, 1796, in Loudoun Co .. Va.; her parents emigrated to this county in 1818. Benjamin Taylor a nd Sarah Miller were married July 28, 1830 ; they were parents of three ch ildren-Sarah A., Darius, and Simeon, our subject; all the children are mar ried and living in this county. Simeon was born June 7, 1838, and his boyh ood was spent on the farm; he attended high school in Urbana in 1859 and 1 860, and afterward attended mercantile college at Cleveland, Ohio; he comm enced teaching school in the winter of 1860, and was, for eight consecuti ve terms, teacher in his own district ; he engaged afterward in teaching f or several terms, and acquired a good record, as may be known by his lo ng continuance in the same district. During this time, he became engag ed to and married Miss Susan Ward, Oct. 1, 1863, since which time he has d evoted his attention almost exclusively to agricultural pursuits; they ha ve four children-Alonzo W., Laura 0., David E. and Bertha R.; Alonzo was b orn April 5, 1866; Laura, Feb. 22, 1868; David, July 24, 1870 ; and Berth a, Sept. 2, 1872. Mr. Taylor was Township Treasurer in 1871, and, in the f all of 1878, was elected Justice of the Peace of Mad River Township ; h is judgment as a Justice is good, having as yet no decisions reverse d; he takes the place of Squire David Loudenback, universally acknowledg ed one of the best Justices ever serving in this township. Mr. Taylor h as lately purchased the farm upon which he now resides, and is fitti ng it up nicely; he has recently built a fine barn, and otherwise added mu ch to the beauty and convenience of the farm. His parents were among the p ioneers of this county, and did their share toward its development; his mo ther was one of ten children, of whom Mary, the eldest (now 92 years of ag e), is still living; also one brother, Nathan, aged 76, who resides in San gamon Co., Ill.; many of the old veterans have passed away since their tim e, and they, too, will soon take their departure. Mr. Taylor's parents die d-the father, in 1854, and the wife and mother in 1880; they were estimab le people, and their children do honor to their name. Mr. Taylor owns 2 24 acres of fine land, which brings him a nice revenue ; he lives at his e ase; one mile west of the village-of Westville, and devotes his time to su perintending his estates and attending to his official duties; he is a pro minent member of the I. O. O. F., and also of the Grange. Mrs. Tayl or is a direct descendant of the first settlers of this county, her fathe r, Noah Ward, dying when she was quite young; her grandfather, George War d, reared a large family, which is well represented in this township. M r. and Mrs. Taylor- are both members of the M. E. Church ; their ho me is a pleasant one, and a more genial host and hostess will be hard to f ind.

Joseph Ford Jr * an old and respected citizen of Urbana Twp was instantly killed last evening near Texas; he was riding a spring wagon when his horse became frightened, gave a jerk, snapping the lines near the bit and then ran violently. The old gentleman found it impossible to stop the horse, jumped from the vehicle, unfortunately landing on his head, killing him instantly; he was upwards of 65 years.
(*) There is enough evidnece to suggest the JR title is incorrect.

William Terrell (Terry) Hatfield 7040 38th Ave., North St. Petersburg, FL 33710 A-United States OUATI_America@Yahoo.com
FROM HISTORY OF CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, OHIO, 1881:
"Jeptha Terrell was born in Virginia in the year 1776. He married Miss Sar ah Barnes, of that state, in 18__. They came to this county in 1811, and s ettled on Buck Creek. On March 2, 1812, they removed to Section 32 in th is township, now owned by Timothy Terrell. Of the twelve children bo rn to this couple, but one remains on the homestead."
(Note: " When the Calland Cemetery in Champaign County was cleared, a grav estone for Jephthae Terrell was uncovered which read, "In memory of Jephth ae, son of Matthew & Mary Terrel who died December 27, 1817 aged 48 year s, 3 months + 20 days." This gravestone is now in the possession of Mrs. E rma (Wilson) Vail, descendant of Jephthae's son Timothy Terrell."
(Note: " If the gravestone for Jephthae Terrel is correct, his date of bir th was September 1, 1769, and not 1776 as the Champaign County, Ohio histo ry indicated."
"At another time, a party of rangers stopped at the house of Jeptha Terrel l. In the evening, the fired off their guns, simultaneously. The neighbo rs feared that Indians had made an attack on the Terrells, and were much a larmed. Fortunately, their worst fears were not realized, and the myste ry was explained on the succeeding day."
The Champaign County history and records mention primarily only Jeptha Ter rell and his family; however, it is evident that at least two other Terre ll families were there, and they may have been brothers or some other rela tion to Jeptha. We will assume here that the other two Terrells were broth ers. It seems as if the Terrells moved back and forth between Champaign Co unty and next door Logan County as records can be found for some in both p laces.
