(Research):Beers History WILLIAM RICHARDS, retired farmer ; P. O. Urbana. Very few men who arri ve at the age of Mr. Richards can say they were born, reared and still li ve on the old homestead of their father. Mr. Richards is in his 69th yea r, and but for a slight attack of paralysis a short time ago, would sti ll be as sprightly as many men at 40 years of age. His parents, Andrew Ric hards and Elizabeth Carter, were married in 1809, and were closely identif ied with the birth, growth and development of Champaign County. Andrew w as a native of Virginia, afterward going to Kentucky, and subsequently com ing to this county, where the three brothers, Andrew, Elijah and Josiah, w ere located on 400 acres in one body. They came here as early as 1806, wh en the forests swarmed with game, and the Mad River Valley was the Indian 's favorite hunting ground. The first child beta to Andrew and his wife w as a daughter, Melinda ; William was born March 1, 1812, and his father w as a teamster during the Indian war commencing that year. The Indians oft en came to their house, but always seemed friendly, being great traders a nd always wanting to swap for something to eat. There were five childre n, of whom William is probably the only one living. His mother died fir st and Andrew, his father, in 1839. The marriage of William and Martha Pow ell was celebrated June 25, 1839, Rev. John C. Pearson officiating. They c ommenced housekeeping in the old home of his father. Sons and daughters, t welve in number, were born to them, but six only are living-Melinda, Rut h, Mary, Phoebe, Sarah P. and Emma G. They are all well settled in life; E mma, the youngest, being the only one unmarried. The family residen ce is a cozy, home-like place, neatly furnished. Peace and a sufficien cy of everything that makes life desirable are to be found in this happy h ome. Mr. Richards has always been a successful business man, and during h is long and useful life has retained the confidence and esteem of all wi th whom he has done business. His children should ever revere the memo ry of their parents who have done so much for them and provided so many co mforts and luxuries for their benefit.

The Virginia-Ohio Fusons : a geneological [sic] history of the Virginia-Oh io branch of the Fuson family in America Oxford, Ohio: Oxford Press, 193 9, by Ferguson, Sylvia Celicia Fuson, 230 pgs. pg50
When 18 years of age William married Deidamia Lee, charming daughter of El der John lee and cousin of Gen Robert E Lee. The year following they settl ed in Teay's valley , now in Putnam County West Virginia. We refer to reco rds found in Deidamia's parents were living in Teay's Valley and that Eld er Lee was serving as a Baptist missionary to this district. Elder Lee's i nfluence over young WIlliam Fuson must have been strong for less than fi ve years later we find William following in Elder Lee's footsteps as a mis sionary to Hanging Rock, Lawrence County, ohio. The remainder of his lie fe was devoted to the church, though like most pioneer preachers, he maint ained his family by farming and also by tanning. Detailed records of his s ervices as a minister are given in the chpater devoted to Fuson ministers.
IN 1827 Elder William Fuson moved his family to Champaign County Ohi o, where his father and brothers were already located. Here he establish ed his family on a farm near St paris, Ohio. The Fuson homestead is abo ut one and a quarter mile from Mount Zion Church and cemetery east. Aft er the first full cross-roads from the Church going east, a lane turns o ff to the left, and the first gate on the left opens into the Fuson far m. There, nestled among the trees of the orchard stood the first Fuson hom e. After their daughter Deidamia married Newton Blue, another and more mod ern structure was built within a few hundred yards of the first home. Her e, with this daughter and son-in-law, Elder Fuson made his hoem for the la st fifteen years of his life. He lived to see all but three of his childr en buried.
Elder William Fuson died July 28, 1879 at the age of eighty-nine. H is funeral was conducted by Rev W R Thomas, Rev T P Childs, E B Smith a nd Rev A B Nixon. His remains were laid to rest in Mount Zion Cemeter y. A monument patterned after a pulpit with two Bibles on the top and stan ding more tha five feet high marks the graves of Elder William Fuson and h is wife, Deidamia Lee Fuson. On the shaft, below his name and the da te of his death is the following inscription, weathered and difficult to r ead: Active in labor, clear in thought, Went preaching filled with zeal And breathed the prayer divinely taught Sixty-Five years in destitute fields. Though dead he speaks in reason's ear, And in example lives; His faith and hope and loving deeds Still fresh instruction gives. Father, though from yonder skie Cometh neither voice nor cry Yet we know for thee today Every pain has passed away Below the name and date of death of Deidamia Fusun, this verse appears: Weep not dear friends for me My savior called and I am free For thirty years my eyes were blind I could not see a friend though kind. Yet by faith I saw the savior mine Joint heir with him of worlds above I see him now in glory shine And reign with him in endless love
Elder William Fuson's family Bible still exists and is in the possessi on of W Ben Fuson of Woodward, Okla, a grandson of Elder William's olde st son, Roland Lee Fuson. More on his ministry in this book pg 171

He was born in Loudoun Co., Va., on May 24, 1814, and died on May 23, 189 1, age 77. He came to Ohio with his father’s family at the age of 3 and se ttled temporarily in Pickaway Co. In 1818 they came to Champaign Co. and l ived for a brief period on the James Russell farm near Concord Chapel. T he family soon after caning to this county, perhaps in 1818, settled at t he Russell homestead, two miles SW of the chapel, and here Valentine gr ew to manhood.
Early in life he learned the carpenter trade and was always at the he ad of his trade. On July 26, 1836, he married Margaret, daughter of the pi oneer Joseph Hill, with whom he lived almost 55 years.
He purchased a lot 3/4 mi. S. of Concord Chapel, erected a log cabin, a nd there commenced housekeeping. In 1844 he went to Iowa while it was y et a territory. During the time there he lived in Muscatine, on the ban ks of the Mississippi River. He remained in Iowa only a short time, duri ng which he buried one of his children.

(Research):Cable Ohio April 6 1903 In the death of Margaret Russell. who recently passed away at the ho me of her. sonin-law, Adam Vance, in South Main street, Urbana, passes aw ay the last of the pioneer and historic family of Joseph Hill, of Conco rd township. Pioneer, because she was the first permanent settler in the t ownship, having settled there more than one hundred years ago, and histor ic because of her immediate connection by marriage to the renowned John Ra ndolph of Roanoke, Virginia. The Hill family came from Fleming county, Ken tucky, at the beginning of the last century, and settled on the farm now o ccupied by the venerable James D. Powell, situated a mile east of Conco rd chapel. The family consisted at that time of two Joseph HUts, the father and son t he junior Hill, wife and daughter Sarah, then one year old, in October 183 6, the senior Joseph Hill died, at the advance age of 96 years. Mrs. Hill was the daughter of Mildred Oliver, the latter being a sist er of John Randolph. In 1818 the first wife died, soon after he went ba ck to Fleming county and married Mary Purcell, a cousin of the first wir e, being a daughter of Margaret Chandler nee Randolph. The two mother-in-l aws being sisters of John Randolph now lay in the Taibot graveyard, we st of the Arrowsmith mills, the gravestones marking Mrs. Oliver’s age at 9 8, and Mrs. Chandler’s at 100 years of age. In the family there were thirteen children. Sarah the oldest, born in Kent ucky married a tramp school teacher, named Calvin Fletcher, who after marr iage went to Indianapolis, and became the head of the family of that na me who did much to make that city what it is. The elder Fletcher beca me a millionaire and was at one time one of the largest land owners in t he city. One of the sons became an imminent minister of the gospel, anoth er was a representative in some foreign court. The sons were John, James, William and Joseph, the latter being intimate ly connected with the construction of the Panhandle road as civil enginee r, and was eminent as a railroad official the remainder of his life. All t he sons died in the west. The daughters were Sarah, Mary, Malinda, Julia, Ruth, Margaret, Amanda, Mi nerva and Eliza Jane, now all deceased. The entire family were noted for t heir kindness and unassuming manners, and have left a record in many wa ys that is worthy of emulation. Joseph Hill, the father, died Septemb er 8, 1861, the funeral being conducted by his grandson, Rev. Elijah Fletc her, of Indianapolis, and his widow, Mary Hill died July 3, 1868, being t he first funeral held in the present building at Concord chapeL Their bodi es lay in the Harbor graveyard where many of the early pioneers rest. Isaac rather quickly remarried after Maggie's death. Understandab le if he had a farm to work, and 3 preteen children. Laurel his oldes t, my grandfather used to tell another story about his dad dating a loc al woman, Nettie Jenkins (either an old maid or widow) there around Thacke ry. he would often take the horse and buggy/wagon and go see her after su pper, and come home quite late. Laurel was left to take care of the sibli ngs. one time he didn't come home until late the next morning. when he c ame in Laurel immediately began to chastise his Isaac, telling him that t he least he could do if he was going to be out all night was give someo ne a heads up before hand so they wouldn't worry so much. Isaac apologize d, agreed, and said it won't happen again. he then said come outside a nd meet your new mom. Isaac and Nettie Jenkins had been to Indiana and ba ck. they had gone there to be married. i have no dates on this, but.... .. possibly Nettie (Jenkins) could have been the Mrs. Isaac Irvin in 19 14 at Isaac's sisters wedding??? I don't have the expertese to pursue wed ding records in Indiana, 1911 to 1917. do you? sincerely Roger

They may be t he parents of Charlotte Jane Grove Fansler who was born in Tyner, Marsha ll County, Indiana about 1882 and eventually returned to live in Champai gn County with "Grandma Grove." I have John listed at home with his parents in the 18 80 Johnson Tp. census. I don't find Charlotte in the 1900 census of Johns on Township. Supposedly, her father (or brother) went to prison and she s pent some time in an orphanage before she returned to Champaign County. ( My questions to me: where was her mother? Did her father kill her moth er and go to prison? If a brother went to prison (as a child?) why would s he be sent to an orphanage? Had to be the father.)

Ruth fou nd pleasure in seeing her farm worked and in watching over her woods. S he loved all animals and was a supporter of the ASPCA. Although Ruth had m any wonderful experiences during her life with Carl, such as flying the ir Cherokee 140 together, she also suffered more than her fair share of t he trials and tribulations that all mankind must go through. All this behi nd her, she now resides with God in life everlasting. Ruth had no childre n, she leaves behind a niece, Nancy L. (Lewis) Sturgeon of Springfield a nd a nephew, Richard E.
