(Research):Beers History HISTORY OF CHAMPAIGN COUNTY. - 393 UNION TOWNSHIP . Among the early settlers of Union Township, we take pleasure in recordi ng the name of Benjamin Cheney. This gentleman, a Virginian by birth, ca me to this township in 1805. Himself and wife traveled the long journ ey on horseback. He assisted in the erection of the first cabin erect ed in Urbana. He settled on a part of Section J, which is still in the pos session of his heirs. At first he devoted his time to splitting rails, b ut afterward paid more attention to the raising of cattle. During the w ar of 1812, he was employed as a spy by Hull. He received his dischar ge on the day preceding Hull's surrender. While pursuing this vocatio n, he became thoroughly acquainted with the country. When peace was declar ed, he began driving cattle to Detroit, where he disposed of them at a pro fitable margin. It is said that he drove the first herd of cattle from th is vicinity to Detroit. Buying and selling proved to be a very lucrative b usiness, and at his death, which occurred in 1834, he had accumulated 2,0 00 acres of land. The circumstances connected with his death were peculiar ly distressing. His son Zachariah, aged twenty-two, upon returning fr om a trip to the lakes, was seized, with typhoid fever. Several membe rs of the family were taken ill with the same disease. Zachariah died on J uly 23; his mother followed him on the 14th of August. On the 1st of Septe mber, the body of the father was laid beside those of the wife and son. Fi ve children -all boys-were left alone to struggle with the wicked elemen ts of the world. For some time, they were in a truly pitiable condition, b ut in time the wound was healed, and they grew reconciled to their irrepar able loss. Mr. Cheney represented this county in the State Legislatur e, to the full satisfaction of his constituents. His son Jonathan was al so a member of that body. Of the eight children which were the issue of t he marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Cheney, but three survive, viz, Samuel (residi ng on a part of the old farm), Benjamin (residing north of Samuel) and Jo hn (a resident of Indiana).
At an early election, held October 8, 1811, the poll-book makes the follo wing exhibit John Gutridge, Sr., Joseph McLain, Jacob Minturn, Benjamin Ch eney and John Owens, Clerks of this election, were severally sworn as t he law directs, previous to their entering on the duties of their respecti ve offices.

Champaign County Ohio Land Deed Indices pg 98 In the champaign County records there are entries that may be constru ed as typographical errors. For example: The Benjamin Cheney Survey of 97 24 has Benjamin Forsyth as the patentee. The warrant was in the nan. of Ts rlton Payne for 500 acres. while one Benjamin Chancy did hold land in Cham paign County this name has not been connected to the warrant of 972 4. It is possible that this should be shown in the Survey Tract Book Ind ex as the Benjamin Forsyth Survey.

(Research):Dear Friends;
It is with a heavy heart that I have to notify our friends of the passi ng of Dollie Dee. Those who knew our babies knew they were “Two Pe as in a Pod”. The odds of this happening were a gazillion to 1. Dollie c ontacted the very same rare blood disease that took our precious Sander fo ur years ago on Mothers Day. Dollie was perfectly health on Monday and de ceased on Sunday. Another odds of a gazillion to 1. She died, just as San der, alone in a cold dark vets hospital on Sunday. We had wanted to bri ng her home for the weekend because of our last experience, but decid ed not to. In hind sight, we are punishing ourselves emotionally becau se if we had brought her home, she could have died in a comfortable enviro nment with lots of TLC and her sister close by. Also a gazillion to 1 od ds because Dollie Dee was the dog that Tom got to replace his Sander Ros e. Dollie was picked up from the breeder on the very day we buried Sande r.
Mollie already has 3 strikes against her. This disease is 100% fatal. Th is statistic is because so few survive, that the percentage cant even dr op to 99%. They are no further along in finding a cause or a cure than th ey were 4 years ago. No signs, no symptoms, just healthy one day and go ne the next. It is prevalent in the Cocker Spaniel Breeds, and more preval ent in the females, and also is genetic. So Mollie Mae is behind the eight -ball from the beginning. So we are going to take every precaution possib le to insure she lives as healthy a life as possible. There is some spec ulation that things like vaccines can trigger this disease. The reas on is that vaccines inject antibodies boosting your immune system. If the re is a weakness in your immune system to begin with, boosting it is count eractive. So we are going to stop vaccinations with Mollie and any futu re dog we own. We are getting what they call a “titers test”. Th is is a test to see how many antibodies is in the dogs immune system of t he Parvo, Distemper and Rabies. MOST dogs have enough so they do not ne ed a booster. You may want to consider this for your dogs also.
She is also being started on a different dog food. If you can buy it at Wa lmart it is not any good. Dogs 50 years ago lived twice as long as th ey do today and were free of all of these diseases. Please consider th is letter a plea to take good care of your animals. Feed them and treat th em as if they were your children. Life is so precious, and can be taken aw ay from us at any time. We look forward to the day we will see our litt le ones again in the new heaven and new earth where the lion will lay do wn with the lamb.

__________________________________________________________________________ ___________ Analysis of who children might belong to: * indicates accounted for in 185 0
In 1850 the male heads of house show birth dates as follows: * Edmund 1790, Son *William b1819 and *Samuel born 1823 Elijah born 1818 Wesley born 1824* John born 1813 Thomas born 1811 John born 1801 (head of house in 1840 no sons, only dau}* Richard 1817 John O age 19 and William age 13 orphans....? William 1793* (Head of house 1840) Newton 1827* John W 1824* Ebenezer 1831*
Edmund in 1840 has 1 son born 1826-1830 which is Newton b 1827 (son per LD S), 2 sons born 1821-1825 which are Samuel born 1823 and his neighbor a nd brother John W born 1824; one son born 1811-1820 which is William. (Th is accounts for all of Edmunds sons)
Elijah in 1840 head of house is age born 1781-1790 died before 1850 and h as male in house b 1811-1820 which is probably Elijah Jr born 1818 who sho ws in 1850 census. He has a son John O who has a bio naming Elijah as h is father. John O and William were orphans in 1850, so William was obvios ly his brother born 1837. The bio says Elijah had 4 sons and one dau who l ived to maturity. 2 of the 4 sons were not in the 1840 census.
John is head of house in 1840 with only daughters and no sons. JAmes is head of house in 1840, probaly son of Edmund who was in 1830 b ut not 1840 census. James moved to Union Co, OH. (contact Marsha Buck Deep Roots@sisna.com James died during the Civil War. I was lucky enough to get his tombsto ne information from Union County before the tombstone disappeared. I don 't know what happened to it but when the info was originally transcribed f rom it they had read the dates wrong and had his birth date as 1844. He w as born in 1814. When I contacted the genealogical society to ask th em to check the tombstone dates again they couldn't find it. His age on t he tombstone was 48y 3m 27d. Using the age on the headstone and the dea th date on the headstone I have calculated that James was born 8 Sep 181 4. He died 5 Jan 1863 in Lebanon, Marion Co., Kentucky and is buried in U nion Co., Ohio. His military pension records give three different dat es for his death so I used the date on his headstone.
William head of house in 1840 has 2 sons born 1831-1835 . One is Richa rd b 1835 who appears in the 1850 Census, and the other is possibly Ebenez er born 1831. He has one son born 1826-1830 who is probably John W born 18 24 ( wrongly cataloged) and one son born 1821-1825 which is John W born 18 23
This leaves 3 men who appear in the 1850 census who were not around in 184 0. John b1813, Thomas b 1811 and Richard born 1817. Richard is poss a mis sing son of Elijah as Elijah married 1813. John and Thomas may be other so ns of Edmund who followed him from another county....

In 1919, Nellie CIRCLE (McCONAUGHEY FAIR) of Springfield, Ohio, stepped off a train in Cameron. The 28-year old woman (born October 6, 1891) visiting friends would come to call Cameron home....
....When she arrived in Cameron in 1919, the city was busy with three potteries, four retail dairies, the Cameron Tool Company, six gas companies, three hotels, two theaters, two blacksmith shops, two flour mills, a stave mill, and even a city fair....
However, FAIR (Nellie) didn't come to Cameron because it was a booming city. She came to get married.
Robert McCONAUGHEY from Cameron had a farm next to the Circle family in Springfield, and in 1916 she came to Cameron to visit the McCONAUGHEY family. During that visit she met Robert's nephew, Charles.
She returned three years later and marred Charles. They operated a dairy about 1 mile from where she now lives.
"The mode of transportation at that time was a mule-drawn wagon for 75 customers," she said. "Milk sold for 5 cents a quart, and some customers paid their bill by doing chores on the farm.
"In addition to raising dairy cattle we also had sheep and hogs," which provided food, she said.
Having come to Cameron when the town had only dirt roads, she vividly remembers concrete being poured for U.S. 250 which was referred to as "the big road."
FAIR became involved in the First Presbyterian Church and was a member of Lorraine Chapter No. 9, Order of Eastern Star, and the Marshall County Farm Bureau. She was a chapter member of the Seven Hills Garden Club in the 1930s.
FAIR, her son, and daughter-in-law, Ila Mae, opened the first licensed nursing home in Marshall County in 1955. "She did everything at the nursing home, but mostly was the cook for the 20 residents."
Charles (McCONAUGHEY) died in 1957. Nine years later FAIR married widower, Roscoe FAIR. After FAIR died in 1973, she cared for her daughter, Anna Katherine FISH, who contracted polio in 1956.
At the age of 97, FAIR was still helping to care for her daughter, who died in 1988. Following her daughter's death, she moved in with John and Ila Mae on Pennsylvania Avenue....

(Research):Early Settlers of Champaign Co, OH pg 109,110,111 The Piatt Castles November 6. 1957
Those who travel route 275 east ofWest Liberty will remember the old Pia tt castles which stand out unique as something rare to this country, as in deed they are. One could easily imagine themselves in some part of the O ld World and passing one of the old medieval castles which stand on a comm anding point overlooking the surrounding estate of some great nobleman. No matter what they may remind you of, you will not find two more unique a nd picturesque homes anywhere in the state of Ohio, and the story which go es with them is reminiscent of the days when Europeans were emigrati ng to this country to establish homes in a new country where life and libe rty were common to all people. John Piatt was born in the Province ofDauphine in southeastern France an d, in 1690, came to America. He settled in New Jersey and reared a large family of chi ldren. Some of the sons in this family served as officers during the Revol utionary war. One of these sons was Jacob Piatt who served as Colonel in W ashington's command. After the war Jacob moved his family to Boone count y, Kentucky, and established his home. From this home one of Jacob's son s, Benjamin Piatt, moved to Cincinnati and served as Quartermaster Gener al with General Harrison during the War of 1812. In 1817 Benjamin Piatt purchased 1700 acres of land in Logan county. Th is estate bordered Champaign county line at its south line and extended ea st and west between the Ludlow line and West Liberty. Almost at the bord er line between Champaign and Logan counties, Benjamin Piatt built a log h ouse which, tradition says, had fourteen rooms. The log house was locat ed on the knoll very near the old Piatt burying ground. In this log home Donn and Abram Saunders, sons of Benjamin grew to manhoo d. Both sons became well known as military men and statesmen. It was the se two sons who built the present castles known as Mac-A-Cheek and Mac-O-C hee. The castle known as Mac-A-Cheek, is a stone structure of three floors wi th a tower extending two stories above the third floor. All of the materi al used in construction, with the exception of the roof and hardware, ca me directly from the estate. The stone came from a quarry on the land. T he mortar is lime burned in a lime kiln near the quarry. All the walls a re two-feet thick, hand-chiseled stone and required four years to be compl eted. The floors and woodwork are oak, walnut and wild cherry, one and one-ha lf inch thick; some of the walls are paneled in ash, pine and walnut or fi nished tapestry or stone. The ceilings of the castle were frescoed and ma ny beautiful scenes were painted and are still in a state of good preserva tion. Mac-A-Cheek has been continuously occupied by some of the Piatt descendan ts and is presently occupied by William M. and John J. Piatt who are gre at grandsons of Abram Saunders Piatt. Much of the furniture in the hou se is the original furniture of A. S. Piatt and it either early Americ an or French antique, some pieces a hundred and fifty years old. The other castle, Mac-O-Chee, which was built by Donn Piatt, has a somewh at more attractive location that Mac-A-Cheek. It is more open to view fr om the highway while the old castle is nestled on a hill surrounded by tre es and undergrowth. The original home of Mac-O- Chee was a frame house a nd in 1879 Donn built the stone structure on the front of the frame hous e, combining the two as one house. This building contains thirty-four roo ms large and small, some of them very small and of little use. Donn Piatt died in 1891 so he only lived about a dozen years in his mansio n. At his death he had no children and his widow sold the monstrosity a nd all of its furnishings. It had many owners during the period until 19 56 when the present owners ofMac-A-Check purchased it and brought it ba ck in the Piatt family. They are now in the process of restoring it to i ts former appearance when Donn Piatt lived there. The stone part of the structure evidently was at one time very beautifu l. On the first floor the boys have sanded and polished the walnut and pi ne paneled flooring and it is indeed beautiful. The ceilings and walls, on ce frescoed like the other castle and by the same man, are in poor conditi on due to the fact it remained unoccupied and neglected for many years. T he furniture in the house is for the most part French, Spanish and Itali an antique which was placed there by the people who owned it after Donn Pi att's death. Practically none ofit was the old Piatt furniture. However mu ch of the furniture is really antique and quite interesting to see. The re are several great four-poster canopy-top beds, one of them six feet wi de and eight feet long. This castle ofDonn Piatt was somewhat more modernized than the other castl e. A spring on the hillside back of the castle was piped to the house a nd water for use in drinking and cooking was made available inside the hou se. Old-fashioned wash basins and toilet facilities were adjacent to so me bedrooms. A rain water tank in one of the towers on top of the house fu rnished water for flushing the toilet. The sewage disposal was carried from the hou se by tile and dumped out on top of the ground at the foot of the hi ll to be washed away by the rain storms. What to me was one of the most interesting spots in connection with the ca stles is the old log chapel worship house and the little cemetery where ma ny of the Piatts and some few others are buried. The cemetery is on the same side road and forty or fifty ro ds south of castle Mac-A- Cheek. The little log chapel is about sixteen fe et wide and twenty-five feet long. A door at the side remains unlatched a nd one can look in and view the interior without going inside. The seats a nd pulpit are still there intact as they were years ago. The little buildi ng shows signs of decay and it won't be many years hence till it will be only a memory .I suspe ct the little chapel is many years older than the castles and was probab ly built by Benjamin Piatt when he first came to this region. The Piatts w ere of the Catholic faith and here the family worshipped. Two stone burial vaults near the Chapel contain the remains of about a doz en of the original Piatts, among these are Benjamin and his wife. On the o ther side of the chapel are the graves of other members of the Piatts, al so some Runkle and Danaker graves. It would not be proper to close this article without some mention of the S hawnee Indian town of Mac-a-Chee which was located on the hillside nor th of the highway and about thirty rods due north of the Abram Saunders Pi att castle. The Indian town was destroyed in 1786 by Col. Benjamin Logan a nd his expedition of American Frontiersmen. The Mac-a-chee river vall ey is rich in Indian lore from the time of the French and Indian war to t he time the Indians were removed to the west. There is a stone on the hill side where the town was situated which, according to legend,. marks the bu rial spot of a very noted Indian woman. The stone is plainly visible fr om the highway. A legend in a very old history which I have states that th is woman was known as the "Grenediere Squaw" and was a sister of the Indi an Chief Cornstalk and also a sister of the mother of Tecumseh.

The pioneer meeting at West Liberty, on Thursday last, was a grand success in every particular. The meeting convened in the town hall at the usual hour, and after reading a portion of scripture by Rev. Wm. Fitzgerald, prayer was offered by Hon. Phillips, aged 80 years; Daniel Cowgill, [the maker of Gen. Simon Kenton*s coffin forty-.three years since] aged 73 years; Hon. Luther Smith, aged 79 years, which, together with Mr. HaIler, the first speaker, whose age is 78 years, makes a total of four hundred and seventy.-six years, for the six speakers, or an average of more than seventy~nine years. A resolution tendering the thanks of the association to Mr. and Mrs. Taylor for their kindness and hospitality was passed by a unanimous vote. The meeting adjourned to meet on the 28thof August in their annual reunion, at Neal*s grove, near Concord Chapel.

(Research):Champaign Co, Early Settlers One of the most highly respected and best loved pioneers was William Patri ck. For eigl years he trod the streets of Urbana watching its growth fr om a tiny village to a prosperous city. Patrick came to Urbana in 1811, th en a lad of fifteen years. His father was a cabinet maker. n son, Willia m, followed in the same business, manufacturing and operating a retail sto re. Living to the ripe old age of ninety-five, no man in the county was more t imes elected tc public office. His was a case of the office seeking the ma n. He served on the council, was elec1 time after time to the office of Ma yor and was almost as equally active in county affairs. In fact his name w as placed on the ballot so many times that finally he flatly refused to pe rmit it any more. Although he held public offices and more of them, and for more years th an any I yet it has been said of him "no taint of wrong or suspicion of ev il" marked his public or life I think it can be truthfully said that duri ng the years from 1811 to 1891 no to mold the future of Urbana than did Wi lliam Patrick. Willow drive, now known as Patrick avenue, is a lasting monument to Mr mem ory. The drive out to the cemetery has long been an object of admirati on by Urbana. The present elms which line both sides of the avenue are suc cessors to a stately willow trees, which for three-quarters of a centur y, spread their overlappin across the avenue. It was largely through the influence ofMr. Patrick that the cemetery was e stablished in 1856, and with his own hands, he planted every one of the li ttle willows. With loving care and the help of the town boys, he careful ly sifted the earth around each plant and then, day after day, he water ed and nurtured them until every one was well on its way to sturdy growt h. In 1891, after Patrick's death, and in honor ofhis memory, the cemetery tr ustees instructed the superintendent to keep his grave and that of his wife in pe rfect condition from year to year as a token of appreciation for what he h ad done for the cemetery. It was with a touch of sadness when, about 1925, the old willows had beco me so decrepit and storm-broken with age and they were a menace to trav el safety, that it was decided to replace them with the elms. Much of the historical knowledge about Urbana which we possess today was w ritten for posterity by William Patrick during his long lifetime.

Beers History of Champaign Co 1825-Township Clerk, William Patrick. Treasurer 1830-Township Clerk, William Patrick; From 1825 to 1851, William Patrick was chosen clerk. We cannot omit the name of one, Judge William Patrick, who still lingers a mong us, older than the century, whom the city has delighted to honor, a nd who, in the varied career of his life, has won the highest praise of me n, that of "the man of integrity." The friends who know him will hearti ly respond to the sentiment of Horace, Redeat sere in Coelum, and when t he change shall come, that he walk forth from the winter of life into t he everlasting morning.
HON. WILLIAM PATRICK.-There are few of Champaign's pioneers who have not l ong since been laid to rest with their fathers, but on the streets of Urba na may be often seen the venerable form of Judge William Patrick bending u nder the weight of years, a living link connecting the pioneer days of t he county with its present wealth and prosperity. The family are of Iri sh origin, the great-grandfather of William, viz., John Fitzpatrick, bei ng a native of Ireland, who carne to the American colonies about the midd le of the seventeenth century, settling in New Jersey, where the grandfath er of William, viz., Samuel Fitzpatrick, was born, and in whose generati on the Norman Celtic prefix of "Fitz" was dropped from the name, much agai nst the wishes and protest of his father. To Samuel was born a numerous fa mily, Anthony Patrick, the father of the subject of this sketch, being o ne of the number. Samuel and one of his sons served in the Revolutionary w ar, risking their lives that freedom might live, and exhibiting that sa me devotion for liberty that has characterized the Irish race in every a ge and clime. Anthony Patrick was born and grew up to manhood in New Jerse y, and there married Mary Briggs, to whom were born seven children, Willi am being the eldest in the family. He was born in New Jersey Sept. 23, 179 6, and, in 1806, his parents moved with the family to Trumbull Co., Ohi o, where they remained about five years, removing to Champaign Co. Au g. 9, 1811, locating at Urbana, which was then a frontier village, and he re his parents remained until death, dying as they had lived, firm adheren ts of the Baptist faith. Shortly after coming to Urbana, William attain ed his 15th year, and, on the breaking out of the war of 1812, although b ut a lad, he volunteered in defense of his country to fight the same old f oe of liberty which his ancestors had been battling against for centurie s. In May, 1813, he belonged to the corps that relieved the beleaguered ga rrison of Ft. Meigs, and at the close of the war was second in comma nd in charge of that fort. His father being a cabinet-maker, William learn ed that trade and went into business with his father, which occupati on he followed actively and successfully until 1857, at which time he reti red from active business in favor of his sons, who still continue to car ry on the furniture trade in Urbana. His advantages for an education in h is boyhood days were very limited, but those that existed he readily embra ced, attending the common subscription school a, much as circumstances wou ld permit, thereby obtaining a fair English education. He was married Apr il 30, 1820, in Urbana, to Rachel Kirkpatrick, a native of Pennsylvania, b orn in December, 1795. Seven children were the fruits of this union, fo ur of whom are yet living, viz., three sons-E. B., W. R. and Alexander-a nd one daughter-Mary Ames, who is the wife of John B. Happersett, the bo ot and shoe merchant of Urbana. For the space of nearly half a century, Ju dge Patrick enjoyed the companionship of his faithful wife, but on the 21 st day of August, 1865, death claimed her as its victim, leaving a vo id in the household and heart of her companion that has never been fille d. Mrs. Patrick was a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, a nd died with a strong and abiding faith in a blissful immortality. Judge P atrick has been in official position nearly all his life, and as ear ly as 1819 was appointed Township Clerk of Urbana Township, and was re-ele cted to the same position thirty-two consecutive years. From 1824 to 183 0, he was Commissioner of Insolvents ; in 1831, was elected Justice of t he Peace for Urbana Township, and re-elected five times, holding that offi ce until it was superseded by the Associate Judgeship in 1848, which he oc cupied until 1852. In 1841, he was elected Mayor of Urbana ; served one ye ar, and declined a re-election. In 1859, he was again elected Mayor, and r e-elected six times consecutively, at last declining to be a candidate f or the office. During his mayoralty, he was also Justice of the Peace, whi ch position he held for two years after his term as Mayor expired. In 187 5, although not soliciting the honor, he was again elected Justice of t he Peace, and re-elected in 1878, which position he now holds. Besides tho se mentioned, he has held many minor offices, such as Assessor, Recorde r, etc., and was a member of the Council one year. Of his father's famil y, but three are now living, viz., himself, John B. and J. H. Patrick. Jud ge Patrick has been a life-long member of the Baptist Church, and in his y ounger days was a Whig and afterward a Republican, but was always independ ent in his views on political subjects, and never a partisan. During the r ebellion, he was an outspoken Unionist, and advocated the vigorous prosecu tion of the war. We are glad to be able to place before our readers the re cord of a man who, in every capacity, has exhibited such unswerving rectit ude and integrity of character as this old pioneer in his long years of us efulness, and few men of Champaign Co. are more widely known or more unive rsally respected for the many traits of heart and mind which it is his for tune to possess.

A most beautiful and estimable life can to a close Monday eve ning around 7:30 o’clock, when J. F. Brand passed quietly away at his ho me on West Reynolds street. Saturday nigh Mr. Brand suffered a hemorrha ge of the lungs and as the days passed he grew rapidly worse until death f inally relieved is sufferings. He has been in failing health for the pa st several years, but never uttered a complaint and it was only his indomi table will that kept him from being bedfast.
John Francis Brand, better know as “Frank or “J. F. Brand,” di ed at his home on West Reynolds street, Urbana, Ohio, Monday, October 1 3, 1919 at 6:30 p.m., after a short but severe illness. Thus passed a li fe long resident of this County, a splendid business man and excellent cit izen.
J. F. Brand was born June 18, 1848 in Union Township this coun ty, being the youngest son of Major Joseph C. and Lavinia Talbott Bran d. He received his education in the public schools of Urbana and Urbana U niversity. At the age of 15 years he was employed as assistant engine er in the construction of the Atlantic and Great Western Rail Road, now t he Erie railroad, and as such helped in surveying the right of way and est ablishing the grades of that road for 15 miles east of north Lewisbur g. In 1864 he became clerk to his father in the Commissary departme nt of the United States Army and served in that capacity until the clo se of the War between the States, being present at Lee’s surrender at Appo mattox and assisting in execution of Grant’s order to feed the hungry conf ederates. At the age of 19 he accepted employment with the Urbana Citiz en and Gazette, and in 10 years rose through the several grades of reporte r, local editor, and business manager of that influential paper. Engagi ng in business for himself he chose the grocer trade and operated retail s tores in Urbana and Bellefontaine. Afterwards in conjunction with the la te W. H. Marvin he organized the company known as the W. H. Marvin Co. whi ch was engaged in the whole sale grocery business in Urbana and later beca me the pioneer operators in the preparation and distribution of dried frui ts and other food products.
In 1905 he turned over his active duties in that compa ny to his sons, in succession, and became general agent of the Western Mut ual Fire Insurance Company, becoming afterward treasurer and preside nt of that Company. At the same time he became actively identified with o ther of our representative institutions, being at the time of his death, P resident and Treasurer of the Western Mutual Fire Insurance Company, Presi dent of the McCoy Canning Co., Vice President of the Champaign National Ba nk and director of the W. H. Marvin Co. and in the Urbana Telephone Compan y.
During his active business life he did not neglect his religio us and social development. He was a life long member of the official boa rd for 35 years. In Masonry he was a member of the Lodge, Chapter, Counci l, Commandery and Scottish Rite, and has been Master of Harmony Lodge a nd Em Commander of Raper Commandery. He served efficiently on the Committ ee which secured plans and erected the Masonic Temple
December 1, 1870, Mr. Brand was married to Fannie E. Patric k, a daughter of Evan B. Patrick, late of this city. To this union have b een born four children, Charles and Joseph E., well know business men of U rbana, Elizabeth a teacher of the deaf in Pittsburg, Pa., and Ella, wi fe of Col. Guy L. Qualis, U. S. Army, and now a resident of Colon, Canal Z one, Panama.
Thus are sketched some of the nonsaliant facts of the li fe of this good man and exemplary citizen; but they come far short of port raying the grace of his presence, the courtesy of his demeanor, the friend liness of his spirit, his devotion to truth and honor and many other excel lent traits of character which will ennoble his memory to those who knew h im best.
His was a well balance development of all his faculties and po wers. His culture was broad and enlightened. His ideals were high and no ble. His optimism superb and engaing. He was a very companionable man a nd had friends among men of all ages. Indeed he was a lover of men, for t heir own sake, with a great charity of though for all their short coming s. In short he was a Christian gentleman, a fine flower of our Western ci vilization. Funeral services will be held from the late home, Wednesday a fternoon at three o’clock, when a Scottish Rite service will be held. Rev erend J. P. Simmonds, pastor of the Grace M. E. church will officiate assi sted by Dr. Frank Mitchell, Interment will be made at Oak Dale cemeter y. Champaign Co Brand & Ross Families Pg105-109 by J F Brand RECOLLECTIONS OF LONG AGO. URBANA, DECEMBER 23, 1889 Editor Citizen:--When you requested me to furnish you a paper on Christm as in old-time Urbana, I readily agreed, thinking it would be an easy ta sk to recall incidents enough to fill a column or two; and it would, thou gh I discover, as I begin the work, that my memory recalls occurrences t oo personal to myself or near relatives to be suitable for a newspaper, be ing nearly all associated with home—either my father’s or my own. I—a ll of us—remember Christmas as the happiest of holidays, for it is th en we view one with another in efforts to promote the happiness of other s, perhaps with some selfishness, thinking only of those who are dear to u s, and neglecting those whose barren, isolated lives call for sympathy a nd help, or failing to “feed the hungry and clothe the naked.” But whi le there may be this tinge of selfishness in our observance of the da y, I believe the great majority of Urbana people possess the true spir it of benevolence and good will, and if they are in any sense neglectful a re thoughtless rather than inwardly selfish. This must be so, for when d id a real charity fail of prompt response from our people? From my earlie st recollection Urbanians have been liberal, and have given of their good ly stores to the needy, and generally their charity has been given other t han at home, for it is worthy of note that we have had little poverty a nd suffering in our midst. We have escaped great calamities by fire, wat er and famine, and have been steadily self-reliant and prosperous. And th en we have had a moral community, with well sustained and well attended ch urches and exceptionally good schools and here people of refinement have f ound opportunity to make home-like homes. Christmas in old-time Urbana was a general but not a public holiday, unle ss we include the whole Christmas week, during which it was the custom aw ay back in the “fifties” to make merry in public entertainments such as fa irs and balls, usually for the benefit of some organization, notably the f ire companies, which in those days were the pride of our people and ne xt to the churches nearest their hearts. Every able-bodied young man w ho sought the smiles of fair lady or the approval of solid men of proper ty was expected to be enrolled a member of a fire company, and the rival ry between the different companies for first place in the people’s affecti ons was sometimes a little more than healthy. For a number of years the f ire ladies “took the town,” and their exploits and achievements were eve ry pleasing subjects for conversation in parlor, store, or shop; and the s pirit of the firemen must have crept into even the church for it is true t hat Rev. Granville Moody, pastor of the First M.E. church, was a ready a nd fearless actor at a fire. About 1858, on Sunday evening, a house on Lo cust street, near Granson’s old livery stable, was burning and the fire be ll was rung. When the first tap of the bell sounded, Mr. Moody was in t he midst of a prayer. Before the second tap he was half-way down the pulp it steps and saying “Amen” as he ran, he rushed from the church and to t he fire and was the first man on the burning building, working vigorous ly and intelligently until the flames were conquered. I have heard , to o, that the fire companies got into politics, and that one of our citize ns who was a candidate for an important State offices was defeated throu gh the efforts of a fellow townsman(who leaned toward the “other company, ”) who derisively referred to him as wearing a “monkey jacket” and “runni ng with the boys.” A friend of the candidate, knowing his ability and tr ue worth, tried hard to overcome the effect of all the enemy’s ridicule, b ut without avail; the money jacket was too much for the Cincinnati delegat ion. Long ago, too long ago for me to know anything about it, the then young fe llows of the village organized a fire company and ran with a machine call ed Champaign. Early in the ‘50’s the young men began to refer to the Cham paign as a tub, and the men who managed it as old fogies, and a demand w as made for a modern engine, and young, active men to fight fire. Talk ri pened into action, and the Molunkee fire company was organized, and a n ew side-stroke engine procured. This was the beginning of the firemen’s e ra in Urbana, and later followed the organization of the Young Americas, t he natural successors to the Champaign. The Molunkee company included in its membership nearly all of the “high-to ned” young men and many of the more substantial citizens of the villag e. I was but a lad then, too young to be admitted to membership, a nd as I watched the men on parade, wearing their black pants, blue blouse s, red belts, red neck-ties and firemen’s caps there grew in me a determin ation to be one of their number as soon as years should make me eligibl e. But the changes of years changed my purposes, though I have never enti rely recovered from my admiration of that body of men. There was a time w hen I could recall the name of every member of the company, I think, and c an now name a large percentage of them. It might be of interest to your r eaders to see a list of their names, and but for the fact that you have ju st telephoned me for “copy,” I would give it from a roll which I suppose c ould be procured. In the hurry I will mention from memory the following: *J.V. Guthrie, “Joseph H. White, C. H. Ward, *Lee R. Taylor, Aaron Wile y, *C. W. L. Taylor, William Wiley, *William Chatfield, *David Chatfiel d, *Henry McComsey, John R. Lemen, George Cruzen, N. A. Wierman, A.C. Deu l, T. T. Brand, *W. V. Colwell, C. W. Miller, *W. A. Brand, *Ross Colwel l, C. F. Colwell, J. C. Brand, Jr., *Horace G. Happersett, William R. Patr ick, *William M. (Tip) Patrick, Isaac B. Happersett, *Charles W. Humphrey s, William Warren, Henry Rhodes, John T. Zombro, *Saunders Hubbell, Willi am Fairchild, *John M. Cundiff, C. W. Roof, *Evan G. Wiley, Joseph C. Vanc e, James Kidder, *Robert Outram, Robert Sanders, *L. L. Marsh, T. G. Kelle r, Joseph Keller, Henry McDargh, John McDarr, *James H. Taylor, *James McD argh, W. A. McComsey, W. A. Sampson, John J. Anderson, John D. Rock, Willi am Knight, Charles Rock, *Samuel H. Hamilton, *G W. Geiger, *Aden Wiley, * John Talbott, Archie Houston, Marcus Stansbury, Theo. Stansbury, William G anson, *John Morrison, William S. Reynolds, B. F. Ganson. Our older citizens will recognize that every business interest as we ll as the highest social element of the village were directly or indirect ly represented hence it is not surprising that when a Christmas week fa ir for the benefit of the Molunkees was announced it created universal int erest and everybody made proper preparation to attend. I think our busine ss men must have contributed liberally to this fair, for there were dispos ed of during the week many valuable articles by “chance,” and there w as a general discussion of the propriety or wickedness of lotteries. Th is was perhaps the beginning, in Urbana, of the discussion of the rig ht or wrong of “fair lotteries,” but the discussion did not result in a se ttlement of the question, nor do I think there has yet come to be one mi nd on the subject. Then as now there were people who believed the givi ng or taking of anything by chance was a species of gambling, others s aw no harm in it, and yet others thought the object so worthy that they we re willing to be oblivious to the little wrong for the great good. The fa ir was held in the old Union Hall; and during its continuance there was pr ovided special entertainment for every evening, consisting of music, re ci tations and readings, and one of the features was an original so ng by C. H. Ward, who, by the way, is the only one of the original office rs living. The song was considered a great “hit,” relating as it did t he heroic deeds of the young firemen and ridiculing the efforts of the old fogies, all in a pointedly w itty strain. I am sorry I can not remember the entire song, but can on ly recall the chorus:
Good-bye, good-bye, old Champaign, Champaign, fare you well, The Molunkees say you’ve had your day, And now they’ll sound your knell. There was published during the week “The Trumpet,” edited by W. A. Brand a nd C. W. Miller, and in its columns were found not only a full representat ion of the business men, but good editorials bearing on fire companies a nd spicy contributions from several of the literary people of the villag e, among them Mrs. Max Fyffe Crawford, James B. Armstrong, and C. H. Ward. The “firemen’s era” continued five or six years, or until interrupted by t he war, and the spirit has been perpetuated by the Young Americas, who sti ll maintain an organization. We are all proud of our present fired department, rejoicing in its efficie ncy. I have no doubt the enthusiasm of anti-war times has been a potent i nfluence in bringing about the high espirt de corps of our modern departme nt. I do not often refer to “the good old times,” believing in the present, wi th its increased comforts and facilities for business, and looking to t he future for greater developments of knowledge of nature’s powers, where by life is to be made brighter and happier, yet I think in the old days t he children and youth of our town were more appreciative of the good thin gs of Christmas that are those of our day. Then they were not forgotte n, but the preparation of presents was not all absorbing for six months be fore Christmas. They hung up their stockings and were happy over whatev er Santa Claus brought, and I am sure that was never much—not enough for o ne child to cry over because another had more. Usually the stocking was w ell filled with candy and “cookies” and occasionally a book or a pair of m ittens; sometimes a more important article of wearing apparel. They did n ot look forward to a Sunday-school Christmas tree, for that is modern her e, nor was there a satiety of presents from father, mother, uncles, aunt s, and cousins, and yet I believe they were happier, because contented wi th what they had. Christmas has always been associated with my work on the CITIZEN AND GAZET TE, and in closing, it may not be amiss to tell why. In 1870, I was a com positor on the paper, and on the Friday preceding Christmas, I ran o ut of “copy,” and the editor failed to respond to my call for more. Desir ing to get in a full day’s work I “set up” the well known rhyme beginnin g, “’Twas the night before Christmas,” and followed with a few “stick s” of comments. When my brother, who was one of the editors, return ed my “proof” to me he asked me where I got my copy. I told him “out of t he case.” He immediately proposed to me to do his editorial work for h im the following week, to give him an opportunity to take a contemplated t rip. I consented reluctantly, thinking if I made a great blunder Mr. Saxt on would discover it in time to prevent disaster. As I heard no complai nt from either the editor or reader, I suppose I did nothing seriously wro ng. That was the beginning, and—perhaps—this is the end of my work on t he CITIZEN. Wishing you a “merry Christmas,” a prosperous future, and hoping for mo re of the vigorous work of the Young Men’s Business Exchange in the buildi ng up of a new Urbana, I am Your friend J. F. Bran d

(Research):Samuel Hess, owning and operating a farm of three hundred acres on secti on 17, Richland township, was born in West Virginia, August 10, 1833. H is parents, Jacob and Elizabeth (Dawson) Hess, were natives of the Old Dom inion, and when their son was only six weeks old they removed to Champai gn county, Ohio, where the father purchased a farm and made his home unt il his death, which occurred in 1838, when he was fifty years of age. H is wife long survived him, passing away at the age of eighty-five year s. In their family were seven children, of whom Samuel is the youngest. T he record is as follows: George, who married and died in Ohio; John N., w ho died in Ohio about four years ago; Jacob, who died in Utah about six ye ars ago; Susan, who became the wife of Thomas Middleton and died in Ohi o; Margaret, who married Joseph Swisher and died in Ohio; and Ellen, who b ecame the wife of Jefferson Bertner and passed away in the Buckeye stat e. Samuel Hess, the youngest and the only one now living, was but five yea rs of age when his father died. He made his home with his mother until t he age of fifteen years, when he went to work on a farm by the month. He h ad but very limited education, and from an early age was dependent upon h is own resources and worked earnestly and persistently to gain a sta rt in life. He was employed at farm labor until his marriage, which was ce lebrated September 15, 1859, Miss Elizabeth Swisher becoming his wife. S he was born in Champaign county, Ohio, June 14, 1841, and is a daughter Jo seph Swisher. Samuel Hess and O. G. Hess, although not related, married si sters. Soon after their marriage Samuel Hess and his wife, accompani ed by Joseph Swisher and his family, started for Mabaska county. Mr. He ss had three horses and some harness, a bed and some bedding, which compri sed his entire worldly possessions. After arriving in Richland township, M ahaska county, they remained for eleven days with a Mr. Milledge, an unc le of Mrs. Hess, at the end of which time Mr. Swisher purchased land, a pa rt of which Mr. Hess rented. His first purchase of land comprised eighty a cres an section 17, Richland township. About twenty acres had been brok en which, together with an old log house, constituted the entire improveme nt. He soon afterward bought eighty acres adjoining the original tract fr om his father-in-law. This was partially broken and there was a small fra me house upon it containing three rooms and a shed kitchen. There was litt le plastering and they often found in the morning that all liquids in the ir house had been frozen over night. The furnishings of their house compri sed two beds, a three-legged stool and one chair until they could have cha irs made at Peoria, Iowa. There was an old thatched roof stable upon the p lace. It seemed that the work of improvement had scarcely been begun. M r. and Mrs. Hess experienced hard times if anybody did, and yet there w as much pleasure and enjoyment in their work knowing that they were develo ping a good farm. Both worked earnestly, untiringly and indefatigably as t he years went by, and they have certainly earned and deserved the rest whi ch they are now enjoying. Today Mr. Hess owns three hundred acres of as go od land as can be found in the state of Iowa, and in the midst of his fa rm stands a comfortable and commodious frame residence. There are also thr ee large barns upon the place and good fences, eighty acres being enclos ed within woven wire, hog-tight fences. He uses the latest improved machin ery in carrying on the farm work, and has principally raised corn and ha y, all of which he feeds to his stock. Their early experiences were not un like those that fall to the lot of all pioneer settlers. They were poor pe ople and had to manage as best they could, but their enterprise and lab or has brought to them very gratifying success, and they are now number ed among the substantial citizens of the community. In the early days t he house was lighted by grease lamps and heated by an open fireplace, y et they had a stove with which they did their cooking. Unto Mr. and Mrs. H ess have been born seven children: John N., who died when but twenty-thr ee months old; George, who was born June 7, 1862, and has resided for a ti me in Nebraska, but is now upon the home farm; Alonzo, who was born in 18 64 and died at the age of seven years; Harrison, who was born September 2 7, 1866, and is now living in the state of Washington; Edward, who was bo rn October 14, 1868, and married Janette Lenhart, living in Madison count y, Iowa; Cyrus, who was born October 10, 1870, and married Tena Harris, th eir home being on eighty acres of land belonging to his father; and Willia m, who was born July 11, 1874, and is still at home. The youngest son mana ges the place and works the land for his father, devoting his attenti on to general farming and making a specialty of the raising of Jersey r ed hogs and black polled cattle. Mr. and Mrs. Hess are very hospitable peo ple, and Mrs. Hess has proven a most estimable helpmate and companion to h er husband, largely assisting him in his work by her careful and able mana gement of the household affairs. She belongs to the Christian church. M r. Hess gives his political support to the democracy, but has never soug ht nor desired office, preferring to concentrate his energies upon his bus iness affairs, which have been capably directed, so that now he possess es a handsome competence. No longer does he find it necessary to live econ omically and frugally as in pioneer days, for his labor has brought h im a good financial reward, and he is today the owner of one of the fine f arms of Richland township. -------------------------------

(Research):Early in the fall of 1815, John Cranston, in company with a number of othe rs, started from Rice City, R. I., to make a home in the then Far West. T he little band numbered twenty-four souls in all, the most of whom, as we ll is Mr. Cranston, were natives of Connecticut. but had gathered at Ri ce Citv as a rallying and starting point. They were just six weeks on t he road, and experienced the usual vicissitudes of emigrants. The roads ov er the mountains were in places almost impassable, and, in descending the m, they had at times to chain the wheels of their wagons and let them sli de along for quite a distance. One among the not least discouraging of the ir numerous difficulties was met and overcome in the following manne r, at what was then called Bib Belly Creel:, near Columbus, Ohio. On reach ing this stream, it was too much swollen to admit of fording, and th ey at length enlisted the service of a man with a canoe, who first ferri ed over the people and then their goods. They then swam the horses acros s, unpacked the bedcords, tied them to the wagon tongue on the opposite si de of the creek, hitched the horses to the cord and then drew theta over.
John Cranston died at the age of seventy years, leaving six children as h is immediate descendants, only three of whom are now living, viz., Stephe n, Edward and John B., the latter being seventeen years of age when his fa ther came to Ohio, and to whom we are indebted for much of the early histo ry of the township. They all three, with numerous descendants, occupy far ms in the immediate vicinity of the first Cranston settlement.
There remains near the present residence of John B. Cranston, the log cab in built by him nearly half a century ago, which aptly illustrates the pri mitive manner in which our forefathers lived.
Among the early reminiscences of frontier life, as related by Mr. John B C ranston, we quote the following: It seems that at some place between Mecha nicsburg and Springfield, there was a small settlement of people, who eith er came from Virginia or Pennsylvania, and who evinced a decided horr or of Yankees, as they termed all those who came from the New England Stat es. One day John went with his father to the settlement spoken of above, f or the purpose of paying for and bringing back with them some cattle whi ch his father had bar gained for some days previous. On arriving at the ir destination, the old gentleman found the cattle as represented, and pro ceeded to count out the money, but, by some mischance during the operatio n, disclosed the fact that lie was one of the terrible sect called Yankee s. Upon hearing this, the man of whom they had purchased the cattle declin ed to have any dealings with Yankees, and absolutely refused to let them h ave the cattle under any circumstances, and they were obliged to return wi thout them.
Early Settlers Vol 1 pg108 In the year of 1815 John and Phoebe Cranston natives of Rhode Island, toge ther with a band of neighbors from Connecticut and Rhode Island, gather ed at Rice City, R.I.. in preparation for making the overland trip to Ohi o. It was early fall when the party set forth on the long journey. The nar rative in beer’s History stated they made the trip in wagons and were s ix weeks on the road. Considering the great distant from Rhode Island, a nd the mountainous journey across Pennsylvania, it seems they did extreme ly well to make it in six weeks. The distance could hardly be less than 8 00 miles. They would, of necessity. had to follow the Appalachian Trail fr om Connecticut to Harrisburg, Pa., and from there either by Forbese Ro ad of Cumberland Road to Pittsburgh and the Ohio River, thence to Columbu s, Ohio, and North Lewisburg. The narrative states they had trouble is crossing a river at Columbu s. It was too deep to ford and no bridge, so they hired a man to ferry the ir unloaded goods and women and children across. They then swam the hors es across, and then untying the cord ropes from their bedsteads, they ma de a rope long enough to reach across the river. Tying one end of this ro pe to a wagon, they hitched a team of horsed to the other end and in th is manner pulled each wagon over. Coming down the mountainsides in Pennsyl vania. they had to chain the hind wheels on the wagon so they could not tu rn, thus holding the wagons from running over the horses. There were twen ty four people in the migrating band, hut the narrator does not name the f amilies beside the Cranstons.

(Research):CCGS Newsletter June 1998 Pg 67 More Commissioner's Reports Minutes from June 7 1815 to Jan 22, 1817 December 5, 1816 •Anthony Patrick is allowed one dollar for puting on four locks on the in side doors of the court house.
Early Settlers of Champaign Co, OH pg In the Urbana telephone directory there is not a single family with the na me of Patrick. This is indeed a surprise for I know that there are numero us people in Urbana and the county who can trace their lineage back to Ant hony Patrick who arrived in Urbana in the year 1811. The grandfather of An thony was John Fitzpatrick, a native of Ireland who came to America arou nd 1650 and settled in New Jersey, where the father of Anthony, viz., Samu el Fitzpatrick was born and in whose generation the "Fitz" was dropped fr om the name, much against the wishes and protest of the father John. Samuel had a large family, Anthony Patrick being one of the number. Samu el and one of his sons served in the Revolutionary War. Anthony Patrick w as born and grew up in New Jersey and there married Mary Briggs, to whom w ere born seven children. In 1806 Anthony and his family moved to Trumbu ll County, Ohio where they remained unti11811. Then they moved to Urban a, a village of forty-two homes. Here Anthony and his wife Mary remained u ntil their death. The foregoing information has been gleaned from the pen ofWilliam P atrick who was one of Anthony's sons and who himself was noted for being t he author ofmuch early history of Champaign and adjoining counties. Of the seven children of Anthony and Mary Patrick, I can only be sure of t he names of three, all sons, who became residents of Urbana. These are Wil liam, also known as Judge Patrick, John Harris Patrick and George Washingt on Patrick. The father Anthony was a skillful cabinet maker and all of h is sons learned the trade from their father . Anthony was a very fine craftsman; much of the beautiful handmade walnu t, cherry and mahogany antiques in Urbana came from his artistic craftsman ship. The fact that they were so well acquainted with the manufacture of f urniture let later members of the family to enter the merchandising busine ss. Anthony Patrick's home in 1911 (1811?) was a double log cabin on nor th side of Court street, lot number 175, second lot west of Locust stree t. Since the son William was well known as an early historian of the count y, I will take up his branch of the family first. He was born in 1796 and was therefore abo ut 16 years of age when they came to Urbana. Even at that young age he h ad a prominent part as a veteran in the war of 1812. In 1820 he married Ra chel Kirkpatrick a native ofPennsylvania. Six children were born to the m~ Evan who married Mary Ann Hovey lived on the southeast corner of Scio to and Kenton street. Evan B. and his brother William R. for many years h ad a furniture store where the Rock Shop is now located. A daughter Ma ry A. married John Happersett. They lived on Water street in a house whi ch is now the home ofMrs. Abe Herr and her daughter Jane Hayslip. Anoth er daughter, Jane Patrick married a Mr. Mefford and from them many membe rs of the Rhodes family are descended. The second son of Anthony was J. Harris Patrick. At the age of ten yea rs he was apprenticed to Dr. Carter to be educated as a physician. Not lik ing the medical profession he was released from his apprenticeship, six ye ars later. In 1848 he with his brother George W. opened a hardware store w hich continued in operation unti11872. In 1862 Harris Patrick became presi dent of the Western Mutual Insurance Company which was the forerunner of t he Brand Neer Company. Harris Patrick married Maria Atchison and among the ir children were Ellen, who married John Kirby and gave us the Kirby fami ly ofHarry, Bob, Jennie, Clifford and Louise Kirby. Another daughter Emi ly married Frank Vance, a grandson ofJoseph C. Vance. Another family which traces back to Judge William Patrick is a branch of t he Brand family. Fannie Patrick who was a granddaughter of Judge William married Jo seph Brand and produced Charles, Joseph, Ella and Bessie Brand, all well k nown Urbana people. The third son of Anthony Patrick, George married Virginia Cowan who w as a daughter of a minister. Both George and his wife died before age thir ty ofT.B. Two daughters ofGeorge became the first and second wives of Fred erick Phelps, a West Point graduate and from these unions came Mrs. Els ie Cochran of El Paso, Texas, who has furnished much of the information f or this article. I am also indebted to Mrs. Edwin Kirby, who was very coop erative in assisting me William Patrick lived on the southwest comer of Sc ioto and Kenton street. He was mayor of Urbana for several terms, 18 50 to 1866, held other public offices, and was one of Urbana's most publ ic spirited citizens. He planted the trees along Patrick avenue from Scio to street to the cemetery hill. They grew to be enormous trees, the branch es touching one another across the street and became so old and dangero us they were removed about 1920 and the present elms replaced them. Willi am wrote much history, some of it preserved. He tells of the first train t hrough Urbana; it was a wood-burning engine with William Pindar, the engin eer. When he ran out ofwood he stopped his train, got out and cut fresh fu el. He couldn't operate the train after dark as it was too dangerous. George Patrick's father-in-Iaw, Rev. Cowan, was at one time the owner of t he Melvin Miller farm. Oak Dale cemetery was a part of the original Cowan farm. George W. lived n ear the comer of Scioto and Patrick avenue. He built the frame house in wh ich Ned Kirby lives. It formerly was located across Scioto street. Kirb ys moved it across the street and remodeled it. The Pisgah farm owned by Kirby was for a long time owned by Harris Patric k. I am not certain but I think he built the brick home there. Many years ago Mary Naoma Rhoades, who was the granddaughter of Judge Will iam Patrick, recopied all of the minute records of the council meetin gs of Urbana from the year 1816 to 1874. It is a voluminous record and con tains many curious and interesting resolutions.
Memori es Of The Past The furniture business in Urbana dates back to about 1811, when Anthony Pa trick and Daniel Helmick both located here. Helmick was a cabinet maker do wn on Water street. He operated his business in a small way for several ye ars. But the Patrick family, father and sons, at first starting out on a s mall scale, soon branched out and became for years well known local manufa cturers and dealers in furniture. Anthony Patrick began business in a shop which stood on the corner of Scio to and Kenton streets. As soon as his eldest son, William, became of a ge he was taken in as a partner and later, in 1841, William's son, E. B. P atrick became a member of the firm. Later William R. Patrick joined the fi rm, and about 1857 William, Sr., turned the entire business over to the t wo sons. The two sons remained partners for upwards of a half century, in the meant ime the Patricks constructed the three story brick building near the cent er of the first block on North Main street (west side). For several yea rs before the firm ceased business they had given up the manufacture offur niture, but continued operation as the leading furniture store in Urban a. Today there are still remaining in some of the older families, many pie ces of furniture which were made over the years by the three generatio ns of the Patrick clan.
Champaign Co, Beers The first municipal election was held in 1816, Simon Kenton, Anthony Patri ck and George Hite being the judges.
Judge Swan was succeeded by Judge Torbert, of Springfield, who died aft er a few years of service on the bench, the associates being Judge Willi am Patrick
Judge Patrick was the son of Anthony Patrick, who emigrated into Champai gn among the first pioneers. Ile alone survives of the number, and is o ne of the very few links remaining to connect the present with the early s ettlement of the State. His vigorous pen has repeatedly done good servi ce in behalf of questions of public interest. When Mayor of the ci ty of . Urbana, he was instrumental in having the road to the cemetery sha ded on either side bv trees, and with pardonable pride watches the grow th and safety of the maples and forest trees that line the streets-the glo ry and beauty of the city.

Squire H Wallace, formerly known throughout the county prior to the rebellion, has, after an absense of seventeen years, returned and is now living in Tremont, engaged in teaching school

On Saturday evening last a very large concourse of people assembled at the Universalist church, Westville, to hear an address upon the subject of temperance by Squire H. Wallace: Mr. W. spent his boyhood days in Westville, and the announcement that he would lecture in the village was sufficient to bring together not only those who knew him, but even the rising generation were out in numbers to hear the former associate of their parents. Long before the hour designated for the commencement a prefect stream of human beings could be seen wending their way to the large and commodious church. After an absence of eighteen years Mr. Wallace comes for the first time to visit the home of his youth, and to make glad those who bade him a hearty welcome. After reading of the Scriptures and prayer by Rev. S. P. Carleton, Mr. Wallace was introduced and remarked that he was at a loss to know whether the people had come out through their devotion to the cause of temperance or their curiosity to see him. For one hour he held the audience in rapt attention while he gave them his experience, a part of which many present already knew. ln drawing a contrast in the society at Westville at a period when he was a boy and now, he made some happy allusions. He remembered well when a temperance lecturer came and announced a lecture to take place in Dr. McReynold*s office, a room twelve by fourteen, and the crowd being too great for the room, an adjoumment was held to the bar room of the Eagle Hotel. After the lecture was over they pelted the lecturer all the way from the hotel to his boarding house with the worst kind of eggs, and while John Boswell held the basket containing the eggs he helped throw them. But Boswell fell over some obstruction and sprained his ankle and their fun came to an end. While giving to the audience the ingredients contained in this whisky of the present day, he said he remembered well when he used one of the same to poison John L. Stevens*s dog, a matter that he dare never to mention for fear of the consequences. The lecture was one of the most entertaining that it has been our pleasure to listen to for a long time. He will repeat his lecture at Concord, due notice of which will be given.

S.«tab»H. Wallace of Tremont, will deliver a lecture on the subject of temperance at Concord Chapel on Saturday evening, March 1 5, at Woodstock on Saturday evening, March 29. Squire "has been there" and can give a complete history of the road and all its accompaniments. Let there be a full turnout.
Gave lectures on the evils of whisky. During one of these lectures, S H Wallace refers to his early rearing in the area of Westville, Champaign Co, Ohio, where he used whiskey ingredients to poison a dog of John L Stevens. Stevens was a prominent owner of a tavern/lodging house on the SW corner at the main intersection in Westville. He moved to Florida in later life and became ill, dying there in 1883.

Squire H. Wallace addressed a very fair audience at the church on Saturday evening, holding the audience in rapt attention for more than an hour. We only express public sentiment when we say that in point of general interest and good, sound sense the lecturer has never had an equal in this community. He believes in practical work, and thinks a bushel of potatoes will go further than a dozen prayers. Those who failed to hear him missed a rare treat.
