In 1840 Isaac Clem and his fam ily were listed in the Johnson Township census. In 1857 Isaac purchased t he land that was to be known as the Clem final home place. Gibbs April 9, 1951 Source http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:2731835&id=I5437 66839 Ronald Smith Smithrq@comcast.net The name Gibbs was and is familiar in Scotland and England, and immigran ts from those countries settled in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvani a, and Virginia Colonies; and the name appears among the American Revoluti onary officers. Hugh Gibbs and his brother Samuel lived at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, a nd came to Champaign County, Ohio, about 1804, and were among the first se ttlers in Urbana. Samuel removed to Salem Township and was recorded as a v oter in 1811 and was named Clerk of the Court and serverd between 1816 a nd 1822. Hugh Gibbs purchased a lot in 1815 in Urbana at the Northeast corner of Mi ami and Walnut Streets, erected a house thereon which is standing at prese nt. On April 16, 1816 he married Elizabeth Fitch and they lived at the sa id location until 1830 when they removed with their family to Concord Town ship. They were the parents of eight boys and three girls.Elizabeth Fit ch Gibbs was a lineal descendant of the Randolph family of Virginia, who a lways claimed that they were descendants of the Indian Princess Pocahonta s. Mildred Randolph a sister of John Randolph of Roanoke, married Peter Ol iver and they removed from Virginia to Urbana, Ohio, where he taught the f irst school in that locality. They later removed to Concord Township. Their daughter Anna married Nathan Fitch, a p ioneer hotel-keeper in Urbana. A daughter of Nathan and Anna Fitch and t he granddaughter of Midred Randolph Oliver was the Elizabeth Fitch that ma rried Hugh Gibbs. After the death of her husband, Peter Oliver, Mildred lived in the ho me of Hugh Gibbs. She was quite active and lived to the age of ninety-eigh t. She was much loved by several generations as "Grandmother Oliver". The foregoing and the following records were taken from Howes Historical C ollections of Ohio, and other histories and records of Champaign County. M uch of it however, is from the papers and records of the gifted writer a nd historian of Champaign County and Concord Township, Thomas S. McFarlan d, who was a native and long time resident of said township and who new Mi ldred Oliver and the Gibbs families personally. Much credit is due for industrious and careful research, and compili ng of information herein, to the talented daughter of Thomas S. McFarlan d, Jennie McFarland Underwood who now, at the age of eighty-one, resides wi th her daughter in Springfield, Ohio.

A few days since the friends and relatives of the venerable James Taylor, of this township, celebrated his 77th birthday. Among those present we noticed fifty.~seven grandchildren, and seven great~grandchildren, and not a full count at that During the exercises at the table, which is always an important part to us, the floor of the house gave way, causing some to think that they were celebrating their last birthday. Mr. Taylor is the brother of a well known former citizen of our county, Judge John Taylor, now of Defiance.

Jacob Barger was born 24 December 1787 in Rockbridge County, Virginia;di ed 1 May 1863 in Champaign County, Ohio; buried in the Concord Cemetery(Ch ampaign Democrat, 7 May 1863 - died 1 May 1863, aged 75 years; Nixon &Bolt on - died 1863, 74 years). Jacob Barger died intestate and his estate was settled in the Champaign County Chancery Court Record Book 30, Page 474(fi led in 1863) in John Barger et al vs Mary Kizer et al. According to theest ate transcript Jacob owned 241 acres on the west end of the south half ofS ection 21; 80 acres on the east side of the south-west quarter of Secti on 28; 50 acres of the north-west corner of the south-west quarter of Sect ion 27 (all Township 4 Range 12 - Concord Township) and 79 acres on the we st half of the north-east quarter of Section 24 (Township 4 Range 12 - Har rison Township). Jacob Barger was first located in the 1820 census of Concord To wnship, Champaign County, Ohio. In the 1820 census or Rockbridge County, V irginia, the families of Peter Barger, George Barger, Adam Barger and Jo hn Barger werelisted.

According to the Barger Family History (compiled 1919-1920 by an unknown w riter), Jacob married 5 October 1809 Mary "Polly" Bowsman, daughter of Law rence Bowsman. Samuel Houston, a Presbyterian, married them. Mary di ed 24 May 1841 and was buried in the Concord Cemetery in Champaign County, Ohio (Nixon & Bolton - died 1841, 47 years).

Lawrence Bowsman of Virginia made a payment on land in Section 21Townsh ip 4 Range 12 (Concord Township) on 13 October 1810 (Early OhioSettlers, E llen T. & David A. Berry, Page 32). On 25 November 1816 Lawrence& Sarah Bo wsman of Miami County, Ohio sold 25 acres of this land in thesoutheast qua rter to John Dagger (Champaign County Deed Book C, Page 357) andanoth er 82 acres (southeast and southwest quarters) to John Dagger on 2 Septemb er 1822 (Deed Book F, Page 238). John Dagger, born circa 1795; died 5 Ju ly 1871 in Urbana, Champaign County, Ohio, aged 75 years 11 months 19 days ; buried in the Concord Cemetery, Champaign County. He was married to Elizab eth Bowsman (died 16 August 1871 Urbana, 74 years 9 months 2 days; buri ed in the Concord Cemetery; death record relates she was the daughter of I cabod and Elizabeth Corwin, but she surely was the daughter of Lawrence Bowsman). On 2 September 1822 Lawrence and Sarah sold 106 acres in the wes tern portion of Section 21 to George Gideon (Deed Book F, Page 196 ). On 1 February 1834 George and Elizabeth Gideon sold the acreage to Jac ob Barger (Deed Book M, Page 63). George's wife was Elizabeth Miller a nd at this time there is no connection known to Lawrence Bowsman. While living in Elizabe th Township, Miami County, Lawrence Bowsman also transferred land to Willi am Bowsman (in 1822, 1838 & 1848) and Leonard Bowsman (in 1838). The famil ies of Lawrence Bowsman (age 60-70), William Bowsman (age 30-40) and Leona rd Bowsman (age 20-30) were listed in the 1830 census of Elizabeth Townshi p, Miami County, Ohio.

On 2 September 1822 Lawrence and Sarah Bowsman of Miami County sold 105 ac res (part of the southeast and the southwest quarters of Section 21) to Ja cob Barger (Deed Book F, Page 239); thus, becoming the Jacob's first purch ase. Sometime prior to 1835, Jacob and Polly Barger acquired the northeast quarter of Section 21 as they sold the land to John Barger (20 J anuary 1835, Deed Book L, Page 190). Prior to 1838 Jacob Barger purchas ed the east half of the southeast quarter in Section 27 and on 6 Februa ry 1838 he transferred the land to Madison Barger (Deed Book O, Page 265).

On 21 September 1857 Jacob purchased 40 acres of land in Section 27 (Conco rd Township) from George Barger (Deed Book 29, Page 386) and 1 February 18 59 (Deed Book 31, Page 315). On 15 April 1862 Jacob purchased the east si de of the southwest quarter of Section 28 (Concord Township) from J. W. Hitt (Deed Book 33, Page 126). No records were found in the Champaign Coun ty Land Deed Index that indicated that Jacob Barger owned land in Harris on Township. On 14 December 1841 Jacob married Catharine Paugh. Cathari ne was listed in the 1850 and 1860 census and she is the "Elizabeth Barge r, wife of Jacob," died 29 August 1862; buried in Concord Cemetery. Her de ath notice was published in the Urbana Citizen and Gazette, 11 September 1 862, Catharine, wife of Jacob Barger of Concord Township, died 29 August 1 862 - aged 63 years. Catharine was the niece of Isaac Wright and was the c hild of one of his sisters; either Rachel or Catharine (Champaign County Will Book C, Pa ge 70). Jacob and Catharine Barger and others transferred 15 acres of Isa ac Wright's land in Section 19 of Concord Township to Robert Russe ll on 3 November 1852 (Champaign County Deed Book X, Page 381) and grant ed a quit claim to William R. Morris for 25 acres on 10 September 1857 (Deed Book 2 9, Page 391). Catharine was the widow of Abraham Paugh who died circa 1839 -1840 (Champaign County Estate Packet A-612; Peter Paugh & Catharine Pau gh Barger, Administrators; Inventory & Appraisal 3 January 1840 and Accou nt 4 June 1842). Abraham Paugh owned 59 acres on the east side of the sout heast quarter of Section 25, which Jacob Barger (and Catharine) grant ed a quit claim to William R. Morris on 10 September 1857 (Deed Book 29, P age 391). On Page 80 in the 1991 History of Champaign County, the artic le relates the Jacob Barger and Polly Bowsman were the parents of twelve children. Th ey first migrated to Champaign County in 1811; left in 1812 because of t he Indian trouble and returned to the area in 1813.

The present efficient and popular Audit or of Champaign Co. comes of pure Celtic stock his ancestors having come f rom Ireland, and settled in the State of Virginia, where were born his gre at-grandfather and grandfather, Daniel and John Fitzpatrick, the latter ma rrying Phoebe Largeant, of that State. In 1808, they came to this count y, and lived for a short time in Urbana Township, and in 1819, John enter ed 160 acres of land in Jackson Township, where all remained until deat h; they were members of the M. E. Church, and were among the organize rs of what is now known as Grafton Chapel, the first Methodist Church in t hat neighborhood, having been erected on John Fitzpatrick's farm. This o ld pioneer, who has long years ago been laid beneath the sod, was a soldi er in the war of 1812, and helped to defeat that unrelenting foe of liber ty who for centuries has kept the land of his ancestors in a slavery as cr uel and degrading as the serfdom of Russia. To John and Phoebe Fitzpatri ck were born seven children; John, the father of the Auditor, being the yo ungest in the family ; he was born in Champaign Co., and here married to J ane Allison, a native of the county, and daughter of John and Sarah (Woo d) Allison, he a native of Pennsylvania, and his wife of Virginia, who we re married in the latter State, and came to this county in 1816, settli ng in Mad River Township. To John and Jane Fitzpatrick three children we re born ; the subject of this sketch being the eldest, his birth occurri ng in Champaign County, May 22, 1843; his father died in 1849, a faithf ul member of the M. E. Church, and his mother is still residing in the cou nty, and belongs to the same denomination. John M. grew up on a farm, rece iving a good common-school education, and taught school one term before h is 18th year. In the summer of 1861, he was attending the normal scho ol at Urbana, and in the month of August, while prosecuting his peaceful s tudies, young Fitzpatrick patriotically responded to the call of Preside nt Lincoln for volunteers, enlisting in Co. A, 2d O. V. I. for the three y ears' service ; he took part in the battles of Perryville and Stone Rive r, as well as every skirmish, march, etc., of his regiment, up to and incl uding the fatal Chickamauga; at the latter battle he lost his left arm, wh ich was shattered by a fragment of a shell; in January, 1864, having recov ered from his wounds, he returned to Urbana, where he attended school f or a short period, then went to Nashville, Tenn., and entered the Quarterm aster's department as clerk, under Capt. S. C. Brown, remaining in that ca pacity until May, 1866, when he again came home. In the winter of 1867-6 8, he was Assistant Revenue Assessor for Champaign Co., and in Octob er of the latter year was elected on the Republican ticket Auditor of Cham paign Co., and has been re-elected five times consecutively, which positi on he now occupies. He was married in this county, Jan. 2, 1865, to Miss S arah C. Grafton, daughter of Thomas J. and Margaret Grafton, natives of Vi rginia, who were early settlers of Jackson Township ; the former is dea d, but his widow still resides on the old homestead. Mrs. Fitzpatrick w as born in this county, and has the following children: Grafton B., Edg ar and Eva. Both she and husband adhere to the M. E. Church, and he is a m ember of the I. O. O. F. Mr. Fitzpatrick is one of the enterprising repres entative young men of Champaign Co., honest and upright ; he possesses t he confidence of all classes, and in his official capacity is one of the m ost obliging and competent Auditors the county has ever possessed.

The elder Jo hnson is one of our most estimable pioneer citizens, being now in his 86 th year. He was born in Frederick Co, Virginia May 11 1820 and came to th is county in 1833. They were at the foot of the Allegheny mountains on the ir way to Ohio on the morning of November 13, when he witnessed the "falli ng of the stars". The impression left on his mind by the meteoric shower h as never left him. He has lived for about fifty seven years at his prese nt ohoem. IN his selection of his home so long ago, he left standing in h is front yard, the two elms, two magnificent trees of the forest, which a re admired by all who chance to see them. Close by stands a magnificent hi ckory tree which is indicative of Uncle David's democracy. All this for ms a pleasant home for Mr Johnson in his declining years.

Jacob was a farmer mo st of his life, except two years when he was mining in California, he ca me home in 1850 with $3000 and bought a 120 acre farm. He also owned a fa rm in Shelby Co, Ohio and one in Fayette Co, Iowa. He also had a farm in C lay and Davis Counties in Kansas.

From "Ohio Woodlands" August-October 1967; CEDAR FARM (by) Thurman H. Huli ng: Cedar Farms recieved it's name from four red cedar trees palnted sever al years ago along the driveway to the house. It is part of "Land Grant" s igned by President James Madison to Moses Curry. ... A dam was construct ed across the creek at the upper end of the farm to form a mill pond. A mi ll race was dug to the lower end of the farm where a water powered sawmi ll was built. The saw was a vertical type that ran very slowly, it was sa id that the saw would be started to sawing on a log before breakfast and w hen all the chores were completed, Samuel Huling would go back to the mi ll and find that one plank had been sawed off. The neighbor below, Jacob S hanely, saw the advantages of sawing the trees into lumber, rather than bu rning, so he constructed a similar setup farther down the creek. With a li ttle teamwork between neighbors, the stored water could be put to double u se.

Since our last, Mr. Flemon Hall and family took their departure for Murfreesborough, Tenn. Mr. H. is the owner of a farm of 315 acres, embracing a considerable portion of the battleground known in history as the "Battle of Murfreesborough." Few men engage in a deadly contest with an enemy hundreds of miles from the land of their nativity and afterwards become the owner in fee simple of the ground that they helped to drench with human gore. Mr. Hall has the best wishes of many of his friends in the west end, being as he is a man of unswerving integrity and devotion to right under circumstances where ordinary men fail to comprehend the right. His former homestead, "White Oak Hall," an engraving of which is found in our lately published county atlas, situated in Adams township, is now occupied by Mr. Hezekiah Piles

Death has again invaded our circle and removed one of our pioneer veterans, Mrs Harbour, relict of the late William Harbour, aged 81 years. The deceased was a native of Virginia and came to this vicinity early in the century, and was up to her death the oldest member of the Concord society, having attached herself to the church in 1824. son-in-law, Mr. James W. Smoot, in Johnson township. She was born in Hampshire county, Virginia, near the close of the last century and came with her parents to Ohio in112, and lived constantly in the neighborhood where she died for sixty years. Her funeral took place last Sabbath at Charity chapel, Green township, Shelby county, the services being conducted by the venerable Justus Hunt, after which her remains were interred at the old Salem graveyard, a lovely burial ground, being surrounded on all sides by nature's forest, once a stronghold of Methodism in the days of Finley and Walker. She was the mother of ten children, the grandmother of thirty-nine and the great-grandmother of eighteen. She was the true type of pioneer Christians, as shown by her upright conversation during a period of thirteen years that she remained an invalid, being removed from place to place in an armchair. .

[HI17937] (Research):As early as 1837 there lived at the ok Gard mill on Mad river, near Tremont, a family named Slaven, consisting of two daughters anc several sons. Among the Sons was Lawrence Edwin, who in the fall of the above year, was subjected to a very serious attack of chills and fever. Indeed the situation of the youth became alarming to the family. In early autumn Lawrence took a drawing knife and went into the woods skirting the river and adjacent to the house for the purpose of securing some wild cherry bark, with which to form a kind of bitters. During his absence in the woods a strange infatuation appears to have over taken the young man and he resolved to make a trip south in order, if possible, to relieve himself of the precarious condition into which he had fallen. This he did without even returning to the house and notifying the family of his intentions. When he failed to return home in due time the alarm was given and the neighbors summoned and a general search instituted for the young man, which was kept up almost without cessation for three weeks. Many were the surmises as to the young man's fate, chief among which was the supposition that he might in his weakened condition have fallen in the river and drowned. Consequently the river was dragged for miles, but all effort was fruitless and the search wholly abandoned; and now, after a lapse of forty years the mystery is solved. Barney, one of the brothers at the age of manhood married in the vicinity of Heathtown, this township, and after the birth of his second child, from some cause, abandoned his family and went to Iowa, at an early day. Of the two children, Christopher Columbus became a member of Company G, 3d Ohio Cavalry and was killed on the 10th day of August, 1864, near Jonesborough, Georgia. Catharine married and soon after died, leaving Barney Slaven without heirs. In a few years Barney became very wealthy and prior to his death made a will leaving his entire wealth to the Roman Catholic church. Lawrence Slaven, when he left the parental roof, had wandered away down in to the state of Texas and there married and raised a family. When the late war broke out Lawrence came north into Iowa also, in the same locali ty where his brother resided. When the contents of the will became known after Barney's death an application was made at the instance of Lawrence Slaven's heirs (he having died also) to set the will aside. The Supreme Court of Iowa finally set the will aside and the three daughters of Lawrence Slaven came in possession of their uncle's immense wealth. Just at this stage of the proceedings a woman presents herself and claims to be the sister of Barney Slaven and hence is the legal custodian of said money. The law firm of Gilmore & Anderson, of Keokuk, Iowa, addresses a letter to the writer asking for full and definite information of the Slaven family and as soon as the answer is given Mr. Anderson comes in person to the county to ascertain all that may be necessary to furth er the interests of his clients, Mr. Lawrence Slaven's heirs, and not until the coming of Mr. Anderson was the fate of Lawrence Slaven known to his friends here, now more than forty years.
