...And looking over into Mad River Twp we see an elegant farm house neari ng completion at Mr Samuel Sowers as the former homestead of Mr Thomas Ken ton. The old building so long occupied by the Kenton family is now being d emolished. In the early settlement of this farm's fortification was erect ed near the present building, for protection from the Indians. This was in tended not only as a protection to the family of Mr Kenton, but as a neigh borhood fort.

Beers bio pg727 SAMUEL E. SOWERS, farmer; P. O. Westville. The parents of our subject we re early settlers of Pennsylvania, coming to Perry Co. in 1804. Their nam es were Henry Sowers and Elizabeth Koser. They were married probably in 18 32 ; they had five children-Isabella, Samuel (our subject), Jacob, Elman da and Mary A. The parents are still living in Pennsylvania, and all the c hildren are living and are doing well. The grandparents of Samuel were nat ives of Maryland on his father's side, and of Pennsylvania on his mother' s. In 1859, Mr. Sowers arrived in Westville and formed a partnership wi th Jacob Aulabaugh, which was continued eighteen months. Jan. 8, 186 1, he was wedded to Miss Eunice E. Blose, daughter of Daniel and Susan Blo se. They were among the wealthiest, and Daniel was one of the most energet ic and successful men of this township. He left his children a large patri mony. In December, Mr. Sowers, having previously sold his interest in t he store, came to the farm which is now his home. He purchased the la nd of his father-in-law, Mr. Blose, in 1871, paying for the same $100 p er acre; this land is one of the landmarks of this county, and was enter ed by Thomas Kenton, one of the first settlers; the block-house mention ed in the history of Mad River Township, was built where Mr. Sowers' gard en is now. Mr. and Mrs. Sowers are the parents of five children-Lilly V ., Daniel H., Mary L., John J. and Emery. They may feel proud of being bo rn on the land of which we have spoken, that has since been so splendid ly improved by their father, who is a man noted for his splendid busine ss qualifications and his honorable character.

The subject of this sketch has an abundan ce of these qualities, and is highly respected by his neighbors and townsm en, who are so thoroughly acquainted with his character and useful lif e. It may be well to devote a brief space to the main events in the li ves of the parents of our subject, both of whom were natives of Clark Coun ty, and spent almost their entire lives within its bounds. Thomas V CRABI LL opened his eyes to the light in Moorefield Township, November 2, 1810, growing to manho od there and marrying a lady of the same township. This lady was Miss Syd ney YEAZELL, who natal day was February 6, 1815, and who is yet living a nd quite advance in years. Their marriage rites were celebrated January 3 1, 1833, and for more that a quarter of a century they shared each other 's joys and sorrows, the husband being called hence September 5, 1884. Their family consisted of fourte en children, of whom William CRABILL, JR., is the eldest. The subje ct of this sketch first saw the light of day in Springfield Township, Clark County, March 15, 1834, and grew to manhood there. He h as resided in this county all his life with the exception of one year wh en he was quite young, during which his parents lived in Illinois. He rec eived a common-school education, and early engaged in agricultural pursuit s, beginning his career as a farmer on rented land. For fourteen years he work ed on as a renter, being then able to purchase one hundred acres at $75 p er acre. He now made. His residence is one of the beautiful farm-hous es of the township, its attractive external appearance giving promise h at the interior will be both comfortable and pleasant. The competence whi ch Mr. CRABILL has secured, and the substantial footing he has among busin ess men, is the best proof of his ability in worldly affairs. The wi fe of Mr. CRABILL was in her maidenhood Miss Sarah E. WISE. She was bo rn in Clark County, March 6, 1841, and in Madison Township, November 1, 18 60, became the wife of our subject. She is a worthy companion for o ne of her husband's character, and has been a devoted mother to the childr en who have been given her, not neglecting deeds of kindness among her nei ghbors, by whom she is highly regarded. She is the mother of eight childr en-Joseph, who married Mary HINKLE; William E., Lizzie, John, Hattie, Alic e, Elza and May. All are living except John, who died in his fifth yea r. Mr. CRABILL had held some school offices, and has taken an active p art in political affairs, being a strong Republican. He and his wife we re members of the Methodist Church for several years, but in 1888 they uni ted with the Second Lutheran Church, of which their children-Joseph, Willi am, Lizzie and Hattie, are also members. Mr. CRABILL was one of the build ing committee of Fletcher Chapel, and took and active part in building th at edifice; he is one of the Board of Trustees of the church and Treasur er of the Committee.

THOMAS VOSS CRABILL, retired farmer. Springfield. This gentleman is o ne of the few living pioneers who are left to tell the tale of the tria ls and hardships of pioneer life, and who have helped to convert the wil ds of the Mad River country into the beautiful farms to be seen througho ut the county. Thomas Voss Crabill was born in Moorefield Township, Cla rk Co., Ohio, Nov. 2, 1810, and is the son of David and Barbary (Bear) Cra bill, the former a native of Virginia and the latter of Pennsylvania, w ho settled on Buck Creek, in Moorefield Township, in 1808; they were marri ed in Virginia, and had born to them the following children: Sarah (deceas ed), Maria, John (deceased), Thomas V., David (deceased), James W.. Mar y, Susan (deceased), Joseph (deceased), Pierson S., William H. and Eli za J. The subject of this sketch grew up in his native township, and was t here married, Jan. 31, 1833. to Sidney Yeazell, daughter of Abraham and Ma ry Yeazell, who was born in Moorefield Township Feb. 6, 1815, her family b eing pioneers of Clark County; of this union, fifteen children have been b orn, nine of whom are living, viz., William, David, James, John, Thomas, M ilton, Joseph F., Levina and Elizabeth. Shortly after marriage, Mr. Crabi ll moved to his present farm, which he rented from his father, upon who se death he bought the property from the heirs. The parents of Mr. and Mr s. Crabill died in Moorefield Township, his father, David Crabill. havi ng been a soldier in 1812, fighting the Indians, who were leagued with t he English against his native land. Mr. Crabill inherited 100 acres of lan d. and his wife had $1,000 in money, with which they started in life; bu t, by constant toil and rigid economy, they have accumulated a large estat e, owning 700 acres of land surrounding his home in Springfield Townshi p, and 320 in Moorefield Township. Mr. Crabill is recognized as a man of u pright, honest character, whose word has ever been as good as his bond; po litically, he was a Whig, but, upon the formation of the Republican part y, he joined its standard, and is a " stalwart" in his political opinion s, his whole family being of the same faith. He is now in feeble health, h aving been paralyzed for some years, but, with his partner through life 's joys and sorrows, he patiently awaits the day when he will be call ed to rest in peace.

[HI16218] (Research):Shanley family info some data from steve koons, dayton, ohio WD8DCX@aol.c om

They were natives of Wittenberg, Germany. They then moved to Miamistown, H amilton, Co.in 1816 and from there, they moved to Shelby Co, Ohio and liv ed there until 1830, when they moved to Adams Twp in Champaign Co. and liv ed on Isaac Shanely's farm. Mae's notes say the Shanely family sprang fr om five Shanely brothers, and two Shanely sisters: Jacob, John, David, Chr is, Issac, Catherine, and Sophia. John served as a soldier under Napoleon for eight years and fought at t he Battle of Waterloo. He deserted, and fought against Napoleon for thr ee months. John was a farmer. Atlas of Champaign County Ohio 1874 by Sta rr & Headington pictures a model farm owned by George Baker located on Sha nley Road near Urbana.

The spelling varied among the five sons, as you will see below. In fac t, "Shanley" and "Shanely" were anglicized forms of a German name, the ear liest version of which I found in the land records of 1818: "Scheinly ." The name is spelled variously in tax records and in the census until a bout 1840, when it became "Shanely." Some of the sons chose the "Shanle y" spelling, which appears to be Irish, but the family is German, having c ome from somewhere in Wuerttemberg, Germany. Some people claim "Wittenber g" as the place of origin for John and Catharine Shanely, but I believe th at is incorrect, probably from an error in one of the census records.

Champaign Co Naturalization records list two entries for John: volume CP-1 7, page 003 and volume CP-LC, index.

GARFIELD'S MEN

( The thirtieth annual reunion of Company I, 42d Regiment, O.V.I. (Garfiel d's), held with Comrade Isaac Shanley, Rosewood, O., August 9, 1906. The f ollowing poem, by W. H. C. Dodson, the company fifer, was read by the author.

The thirtieth Anniversary Of dear old Company I Met with Comrade Isaac Shanley, To talk of days gone by; A reunion of the Forty-second "Old Time" hath seemed to spare; A few old, grizzled men will meet, And I, too, must be there.

These dear reunions soon must close, As all must plainly see, For I,--among the youngest,--now Am near threescore and three; Our elder comrades--none are left; They'll join us ne'er again, And those we meet are, some of them, Now past threescore and ten.

Since our reunion (twenty-ninth), With Comrade Will Verdier, Three comrades have been "mustered out," And all in one short year. Lieutenant Scott and Anderson, Their faces will be missed; And dear old Sergeant Grandy's name Is also on the list.

We know not who will be the next,-- It may be you, or I; But heroes who have worn the blue Are not afraid to die. Why should we, now wer're growing old, Falter this life to yield? We never flinched when facing death On many a battlefield.

And so, dear comrades, one and all, When it is ours to go, We'll face the common enemy Of mankind here below. He, too, must meet his Conqueror; Then, wherefore be appalled? We'll meet in grand reunion when The general roll is called.

Beers History of Champaign Co, OH A. P. ROHRER, farmer; P. O. Urbana. Is one of the popular men of the towns hip, and represents an honorable name in this county. His father, Daniel R ohrer, was a native of Pennsylvania, and came to this State a comparative ly poor man. He walked from his home in Pennsylvania to this county, th en back to Pennsylvania, and again returned on foot to keep from spendi ng his money. He invested his money in a mill and stillhouse that is locat ed on the Westville Pike, on Mad River. His capital of $2,000 was all go ne before his work was completed, and he would have utterly failed, b ut a loan was effected which completed his mill, and in the short spa ce of fifteen years he had paid all indebtedness and had amassed the sn ug sum of $45,000. He was a hard worker, and a man whom every one truste d, and their faith was never betrayed. He married Sarah Loudenback Apr il 5, 1834, and reared four children; one son died in infancy; Martin is t he eldest; A. P. Rohrer, Mary A. and Christian F. These are all married, a nd, with the exception of our subject, have been twice married. Mrs. Rohr er died April 1, 1874, and she lies by the side of her husband, in Nett le Creek graveyard. An elegant monument marks their resting place. Abr am P. Rohrer, of whom we now write, was married to Miss Francis A. Loga n, of this county, in 1858. He has since this time made agriculture and re aring of fine stock his business. He has some young horses as highly br ed as any in the State of Ohio. His farm is one of the splendid ones in t he Mad River Valley, and very productive. He is a good financier, a nd is a wealthy man, and intends soon to have a nice residence of the mode rn style. As his father was one of the prominent men of this township, h is memory, as well as the family history, should be perpetuated. Abram h as been for a number of years connected with the public schools, and is De mocratic in politics.

From Ellen Logan Martin elmartin@localnet.com 9/25/2004 One of her tw in girls had died as an infant and the other, Sylvia, was killed when a la rge piece of furniture fell on her. According to family accounts, there w as a fire as well -- a candle involved in this accident. All of this, pl us the fact that her father died when she was nne years old, was a l ot of tragedy for one very young woman -- fortunately, her life was much b etter after she remarried. I have both the ROHRER Family Bible (from Sarah) and the LOGAN Family Bib le (from Mary Ann). Thankfully, Mary Ann ROHRER Blose Logan wrote down a l ot of other family data which has also come down to me. My father (1900-1 997) remembered her and related many stories over the years. Actually, s he died just ten years before I was born so I remember my grandparents oft en spoke of Mary Ann, and, I inherited a number of her things + some fr om her parents.

[HI16249] (Research):CITIZEN & GAZETTE (Thurs. 30 Apr 1885) CONFUSING CONNUBIALITY
Mr. Chris Rohrer, of near Tremont, is one of the best known and mo st successful agriculturists in Clark county. Some years ago he was marri ed to Miss Rebecca Colwell, of Urbana, a young lady his junior by a numb er of years, with whom he has sim(blot) in all the happiness of perfect do mesticity and wordly prosperity. Before the coming of the summer, it is a nnounced, his brother, Mr. Abe Rohrer, also a prominent farmer, will be un ited in the holy bonds of wedlock to Mrs. Eliza Colwell, of Urbana, moth er of Mrs. Chris Rohrer. The relationship formed by this second union wi ll be, in a degree, confusing and puzzling. Mrs. Abe Rohrer will be siste r-in-law to her son-in-law, Chris, while Abe will be both stepfather and b rother-in-law to Mrs. Chris. In case any children are born to Mr. and Mr s. Chris, their grandmother will be their aunt, and a similar event occuri ng to Mr. and Mrs. Abe, the children will be half brothers and siste rs to their aunt, and brothers and sisters-in-law to their uncle. Abe wi ll be his brother's father-in-law while his wife will be her daughter's si ster-in-law. The parties are thinking of enjoying the services of an atto rney to decide what relations they will bear to each other and the confusi on will be continued indefinately, as the generations successively foll ow one another. - [Springfield Gazette.

OBITUARY From “Urbana Citizen and Gazette (Urbana, Ohio) 12 Sept., 18 78 p. 3, col. 2 “Elizabeth Low (sic) was born October 6, 1808 and died Aug ust 30, 1878, aged 69 years and 10 months. Her father, Edward Ward, mov ed from Harrison Co., VA., to Clarke County, O., in 1816. She was marri ed to Thomas Low in 1831.”

[HI16267] (Research):Grandmother Zimmerman’s Birthday Friends and relatives met at the house of Isaac Zimmerman, deceased, Madri ver township, Oct. 20th, 1877, to celebrate the ninety-third birthday of B arbara Zimmerman. Better known as Grandmother Zimmerman, this venerable o ld lady was born in Shenandoah county, Virginia, in 1784. She was the daug hter of Thomas Norman. She was united in marriage to George Zimmerman a nd with her husband emigrated from the place of her nativity to the Sta te of Ohio in the year 1808, and settled near Springfield, Clarke county. In the spring of 1809 they removed to Champai gn county, Ohio and settled on or near the present home farm, where she a nd her husband suffered the hardships of frontier life. She being possessed of frame and body almost Herculean, was enabled to per form great labor. It is said she would go into the forest with her husba nd to fell trees and could chop her side before her husband could his; th at she also made rails, made fence and plowed corn. Her husband being a me chanic, a blacksmith by trade, it is said that she worked at the forge a nd helped to make swords for the war of 1812. In conversing with the old l ady in reference to the new country, she remarked it was all Indians and w olves and at one time she was compelled to bar the door of her cabin to ke ep the wolves out. Her children are four sons and one daughter; grandchild ren, twenty-four; great-grandchildren, sixty-nine. After a rehearsal of o ld times, and a good hearty chat on the various subjects of the day, we we re invited to discuss dinner. We found the table almost groaning under i ts weight of the choicest refreshments of life and where fifty-four perso ns were seated at the table and enjoying themselves hugely. Dinner being o ver, all prepared to go to their various homes, feeling that “it was go od to be there.” We hope that the old, lady may live to see her one hundre dth birthday. . Urbana Citizen & Gazette, 8 Nov 1877 Abstracted by Pat Sticidey

A few days since the friends and relatives of Mrs. Barbara Zimmerman aid ed in commemorating her 95th anniversary. Mrs. Z. came to Ohio in 1809 a nd has lived on the same farm for sixty-eight years. She was born in 178 4.

[HI16341] (Research):JASPER WIANT, farmer; P. O. Westville. This gentleman represents the " Jo hn Wiant" branch of the family, of whom were two brothers, John and Ada m, natives of Page Co., Va., who came here at an early date. Both are lo ng since dead, but their descendants are numerous. Jasper is a son of Brad bury and Jerusha (Ward) Wiant. Bradbury was John's eldest son, and his wi fe was a native of this township. They settled on a beautiful farm in t he Nettle Creek Valley, that is equal, perhaps, to any in the township. F or many years he was one of our most successful men, and everything prospe red with him. They were parents of Elizabeth, who married Simon W. Whitmor e, whose family is represented in this history; Jasper, who married Miss M ary C. Chance; Sarah, who is the wife of Festus Steinberger; Sabra, who we dded Elias Riegle ; James B. and John B., twins (John married Melissa Tayl or) ; and Tul lie M. Wiant. The old folks reside on the old home farm, whi ch was rendered dear by their lifetime of hard labor and the birth of the ir children. Jasper and his wife have six children-Alla, Susan, Edgar T ., Lucy, Elmer C. and Laura. The parents were married in 1864, and Mr. Wia nt has been a practical farmer all his life. He obtained a common-school e ducation during his boyhood, and has turned it to good account in his busi ness. He is a Democrat, and has never voted any other ticket. Mr. Wia nt is a member of Urbana Lodge, No. 8, A. F. and A. M., and is, in all res pects, a woman and good neighbor John Wiant and Elizabeth Metz were marri ed in 1819. John came to Ohio in 1816. They were both natives of Virgin ia ; he operated a large tannery, and was one of the leading citizens of h is day. His farmhouse was built in 1829, and was probably the best hou se in the county when completed; be served in the war of 1812, and duri ng one of his engagements partially lost his hearing. His wife was 56 yea rs of age at the time of her death, and be reached the age of 73. He had w onderful physical endurance, and reared ; family of ten children, all of t hem living except two.

M. W. Barger was thrown from a wagon load of shingles in St. Paris on last Thursday, and broke his left arm in two places. But for the prompt efforts of a little boy the wagon would have passed over him, which in all probability would have proved serious. Mr. B. being the only Prohibition man in the township, it is reasonable to suppose that the occurrence was purely accidental, notwithstanding it happened in St Paris

There is an unfounded family myth in her fa mily that Mary Ann was raised by her Uncle Neville in PA after her moth er died. I sure would like to find proof that Daniel was indeed buri ed in or near that graveyard. It could be possible that the stone is ju st not there any more.
