[HI12696] (Research):Early Settlers of Champaign Co, OH Vol 1 pg196 William Lafferty who was the proprietor of the town was a son of Samuel La fferty who came from Virginia and settled in Champaign county, as it was k nown when he came. His location was really on Buck Creek in Clark count y. Samuel Lafferty was married to Mary Hendrix of Virginia, they were pare nts often children, five sons and five daughters. William Lafferty gr ew up in Clark county, married and told all friends and neighbors th at he was migrating to the state of Texas. He traveled as far as Texas a nd there he built himself a double log cabin. The is how the place receiv ed the name of Texas. The name was changed to Mutual years later. It is im possible to give the exact location of Lafferty s cabin, for the cabin w as squarely in the way of the Urbana~Mechanicsburg pike when it was buil t. The cabin was removed. It has been impossible for me to distinguish the relationship between Will iam and John Lafferty. John Lafferty is listed as owning a large farm adjo ining Mutual north, east and west, but the deeds for every lot original ly sold in the plats of Mutual are signed by William Lafferty or his wi fe Sarah Lafferty. John Lafferty was still living a considerable time aft er William s death, but whether they were brothers or father and son I d on t know. The Laffertys are credited with being original sponsors of t he Methodist church at Mutual. The first church services being held in t he Lafferty home. John Lafferty s home was the southeast corner of the squ are, he was postmaster in 1880, also Mayor of the town.

I noted the Koch family as in the 1900 Census, Otto V Ebelsizer h ad in his household a Rosina Koch, born 1822 in Germany named as his grand mother. They were in Floyd Co, Greenville, Indiana. Since Ottos line ge is proven by his mothers obituary, i assumed this Koch connection to be on his mother's side. Stranger things have happened.
As there were no Evilsizer's in this area in 1860 other than the Joshua line, and they did not use this spelling, I cannot figure out who this Geor ge belongs to. The Ebelsizer line was in McDonough Co, ILL in 1860, some d istance from here. This George must have died young, as he never appea rs in any future census.

I also have one picture of the Sonday childre n. With both of these Butcher families living so close, it seems nearly im possible they were not related in some way. ELI MCKINDEY ARBOGAST can number among his ancestors two of the ear ly settlers of this part of Ohio, and he himself was born in this count y, and has ever since made his home here, with the exception of a year els ewhere. In his business as a contractor and builder he has done a great d eal to promote the growth of Springfield, his place of residence, and t he surrounding country. When he came here in early manhood the city was b ut a village of three or four thousand people, and he has seen it grow fr om a mere commercial town, the metropolis of an agricultural communit y, to be one of the most flourishing manufacturing cities in the State, wi th a population of nearly forty thousand inhabitants.
Mr. ARBOGAST was born in Moorefield Township, March 4, 1830, a s on of George ARBOGAST, who was born in Pendleton County, Va., August 10, 1 793, a son of Michael ARBOGAST, a native of the same State. His father, g reat-grandfather of our subject, was born in Germany, and coming to Ameri ca in Colonial times, he settled in Virginia, and eventually died ther e. The grandfather of our subject was reared to agricultural pursui ts on his father’s plantation, in the Old Dominion, and made his home in t hat commonwealth until 1816, when he emigrated to Ohio, accompanied by h is wife and their five sons and two daughters—George, Silas, Eli, Enoch, S olomon, Elizabeth and Abbie. He settled in that part of Champaign Coun ty now included in Clark County, buying a tract of land in Moorefield Town ship, of which he thus became one of the earliest settlers, and where he r esided until his mortal career was closed by death. The maiden name of h is wife was BUZZARD.
The father of our subject was the eldest son of the family, and at t he time of their location in Clark County it was a wilderness, with dee r, wolves and other wild animals haunting it, and he being an expert marks man, won a reputation as a skilled deer hunter. He bough a tract of la nd in Moorefield Township, and engaged in farming there for a long time wi th good profit, accumulating considerable property, but he lost it a ll by going security for some friends. He subsequently removed to Springf ield Township, and there his life was rounded out by death in the mon th of April, 1868. He had lived to see the county quite well developed, w ith fine farms, busy towns, and flourishing cities, where he once saw b ut primeval forests, wild prairies and uncultivated meadows, with settleme nts few and scattering. The maiden name of his wife was Elizabeth HULLING ER, who was a native of Pennsylvania. Her father was Daniel HULLINGER, a nd early pioneer of Ohio, coming to this State in 1816, and settling in Ch ampaign County, near Fremont, where he improved a good farm, upon whi ch he spent his last days. The maiden name of his wife was SHACKEY. T he mother of our subject died in Springfield Township, in July 1867. S he and her husband were the parents of sixteen children, of whom the follo wing thirteen were reared to maturity: Eliza, Melinda, Catherine, Nancy, E noch G., Matilda, Eli M., Charles, Harvey, Seth, William H. John and Isaac .
Eli McKindey ARBOGAST was reared and educated in this county, a nd at the age of eighteen commenced to learn the carpenter’s trade, servi ng an apprenticeship of three years, and becoming a master of his chosen c alling in all its details. He then did “jour” work until 1857, when he es tablished himself as a contractor and builder, and has ever since carri ed it on with excellent pecuniary results in this county, with the excepti on of a year’s residence in Dayton. He has always conducted a thriving bu siness, erecting many residence buildings, etc., in this city, and even ca rrying on his building operations in other parts of the county, and has ga thered together a comfortable amount of property, and by wise investmen ts of his money has increased his bank account. During the long yea rs of his residence in this city his fellow-citizens have always found h im prompt, truthful and even dealing in all his business transaction s, in which, morever, he has displayed excellent discernment and sound sen se. He and his estimable wife are members in high standing of the St. Pa ul Methodist Episcopal Church, of which he is a Trustee, and they are earn est in their endeavors to further the cause of religion. Mr. ARBOGAST fir st joined the church on Columbia Street, and later connected himself wi th the Center Street Church, and subsequently severed his connection wi th that church upon the organization of the St. Paul Society, with whi ch he has since been identified. He belongs to the Independent Order of O dd Fellows, as a member of Springfield Lodge, No. 33.
Mr. ARBOGAST has been blest in his domestic relations. He has been t wice married. November 6, 1851, he was married to Catherine COFFIELD, a n ative of Butler County, Ohio, and a daughter of John COFFIELD. After a ha ppy wedded life of twenty-seven years that woman of sainted memory pass ed to her reward, and her household knew the comfort of her presence no mo re, her death occurring November 11, 1878, five days after the anniversa ry of her wedding. Of that union our subject has three children—John, Geo rge and William.
The marriage of our subject to his present amiable and true wife, w ho devotes herself to making his home pleasant, took place December 27, 18 80. She has also been twice married. Her maiden name was Annie GANO, a nd she was born in Asbury, Hunterdon County, N. J., May 6, 1841. She w as first married June15, 1857, to Johnson ELLIOTT. He was an attorney a nd practiced his profession first in Bucyrus, this State, and later in Wap akoneta, the county seat of Auglaize County, and there he died while yet n ot far past the prime of his life. Mrs. ARBOGAST’S father, William GANO w as born in Asbury, N. J., while his father, Asher GANO, is thought to ha ve been born in either Germany or Pennsylvania of German parentage. He w as a well-to-do farmer, owning a large farm near Asbury and died there. M rs.Arbogast’s father followed the trade of a carpenter in Asbury until 184 2, and then left New Jersey to make a new home in Ohio, and located near W est Liberty, in Logan County, and died in 1844, in the home that he purcha sed there. The maiden name of his wife was Jemima SMITT. She was bo rn in Asbury, and was a daughter of Joseph SMITT, who was a farmer and spe nt his last years in New Jersey. The maiden name of his wife was WYKOF F. She was native of New Jersey, and a life-long resident of the Stat e. Mrs. ARBOGAST’S mother spent her last years with her children, and di ed at the advanced age of eighty-four years

There are several names that match and my curiosity is peaked! Here's t he background: I have never had any real contact with my father's fami ly - divorced parents. Contact has finally been made and an aunt talk ed to me. She wouldn't let me in the house but she came out on the porch a nd talked. She mentioned my grandmother's family - Redburn. My grandmother 's name was Gertrude Julia Redburn (Boyd - born 1900 in Kell, IL). Her mot her was Stella (Della) Redburn and she married Edward Jeffries (born 184 9) from MO. According to family history, my ggf Edward was the vict im of a hunting "accident" in Mattoon, IL on Thanksgiving Day in 1900 . Th ere was a trial that somehow involved a John Linder. John was somehow rela ted to the Redburn family (in-law). Apparently, Stella left her daughter G ertrude with the Redburn family and she "went whoring around" accordi ng to my aunt. Later she remarried and the consensus is that the man's na me was George Strong. Have you by any chance heard this story? Do any of t hese names match up with yours? Sure would be nice to finally get a ho ld on a connection. Like I told my aunt - I am just interested in the gene alogy not the skeletons! She had a hard time believing that, I think. Oh w ell.

On January 10 1740/41 John Blaw (his father) split his plantation in Montg omery Twp. of Somerset Co. and sold the east half to Michael.Michael had p reviously , Feb. 20, 1738/39 purchased 100 acres from Nicholas Lake, whi ch was adjacent to the 247.5 acres he received from his father. Beden's Br ook runs easterly through the middle of his property and Michael built a m ill on that stream near the west boundary of his property. Later the Gre at Road was built to provide access to the mill and the town of Blawenbu rg is believed to have been named for Michael Blaw and his mill. Michael BLAW, (1704-1786), m. Helen/Elinor VAN BARKELOO (d.1768), m2. Nell ie HOLLINSETT. He was baptized in the Brooklyn Dutch Reformed Chur ch on 18 Apr 1704. His parents were listed as Jan and Marytje BLAAUW. Witn esses were Mathijs de MAT and Greitje BLAAUW, who appear to be [A.4]. Hel en was a daughter of Willem Willemse VAN BARKELOO. They moved to New Jerse y, likely with Michael's parents. On 10 Jan 1740/1 John BLAW [1.] split h is plantation in Montgomery Twp. of Somerset Co. and sold the east ha lf to Michael. VA; Birth date calculated from death date and age at death (68 years, 7 months and 9 days) given on her burial monument.
The birthdates of Zachariah and Isabel appear to be too close (3.5 months apart) for them
to be siblings and not close enough to assume they are twins. The birth dates were calculated from their death dates and ages at death as read from their tombstones. Of course there could be errors on the tombstones or errors in reading them.

(Research):Samuel was baptized 13 Sep 1767 at the Harlingen Dutch Church in Somers et Co. NJ. He migrated to Berkeley Co. VA, probably with his brother Corne lius, where his first marriage took place. Martha may be the widow of Rich ard [1.5.8], but it is more likely that she is [1.1.2.6], a daughter of Mi chael BLUE. In 1810 Samuel was in Cabell Co. VA, probably in the part th at later became Wayne Co. His first two daughters grew to maturity, marri ed and lived their lives in Wayne Co. In 1815 Samuel received a land gra nt in Champaign Co. OH. This grant was for the SW quarter (160 acres) of S ection 21 in Mad River Twp. He also obtained land in Concord Twp., t he SE quarter of Section 23. In 1821, Samuel and Sarah sold this land to t heir sons, William and Richard, and moved to their grant in Mad River Tw p. He is said to have lived in Knox Co. OH in 1812, but, based on the da ta above, this is doubtful. Samuel's will was proved in Champaign C o. OH on 14 Apr 1843, naming sons, Andrew and Richard, and daughter, Pegg y, as well as Noah BERRY, the husband of his granddaughter, Eliza Jane. H is Mad River Twp. land was willed to his sons, Andrew and Richard, as undi vided moities, but after the death of Andrew, his share was assigned to h is son, Samuel. Richard, and possibly Margaret, had some sort of mental pr oblem. Richard is described as "insane" in several records. This may be me rely "retarded" in modern terms, since he remained at home and, alwa ys in conjunction with another family member, was allowed to own land. Nei ther Richard nor Margaret ever married and they both were assigned guardia ns in later life.

(Research):In later years lived in Brock for a time after Uncle Finis left them his h ome. Only stayed there a short time. Had a home just southwest of Weatherf ord ( near where Curtis Elementary School is now). The most "famous" of th eir homes was lovingly referred to as "the shack". It was near Cougar Holl er on the south side of the Brazos river near Dennis, Texas. Virgil help ed in building the home by cutting and installing the rock cut from the li mestone native to the area. The shack had no running water, no heat exce pt for the fireplace and a wood stove where Mirtie prepared all their meal s. I personally never remember a time that they "went out to eat". It wasn 't until the late 60's that they finally put in a phone. Mirtie's brother, Herbert lived in the Jones family home located just do wn the lane about 3/4 of a mile closer to the river.
We often ate whatever I killed or caught of off the land. Mirtie fix ed me such dishes as frog legs, dove, quail, turkey, deer, armadillo, fish ,duck and goose all from their property or the river. The shack was the wi nter home and the Weatherford home was used from late spring to early fal l. The Weatherford home had the garden spot and they moved to the sha ck to care for the cows in winter.
In the early 40's the family lived on Stripling Dairy where they worked f or the owner who lived in Mineral Wells. In 1943 Virgil went to work for t he county road crew. He continued rock work on houses on the side and al so farmed. That same year they purchased their weatherford home from her s ister Ruby and her husband John Dallas. The house was built about 1936 a nd was a Gulf oil employee house plan as John worked for them at the tim e. The house cost $900 to build. Virgil and Mirtie gave $5000 for the ho me and 13 acres around it. They paid $1000 at the end of each year for 5 y ears. When electricity became available they wired the home themselves a nd it cost $1 for it to be inspected.

In 1922 while Virgil and Mirtie were courting they had a secret "mail bo x" placed half way between their home. This mail box was an empty Prince A lbert Tobacco can which they would place their notes to each other. The c an had Virgil and Mirtie's mail box and the year 1922 scratched onto one s ide of the can and the mailbox scratched on all other sides. I still ha ve that can and the scratched writing is still easy to read. Jerald Hemphill
In Loving Memory of Alba Mirtie Jones (McCarty) By: Jerald Lee Hemphill (grandson)
Virgil and Mirtie were fondly referred to by all their descendants as "Gra nnie & Grandad" She was a fairly large woman in stature and had an even larger heart. Gran nie was always ready to give a helping hand to anyone that asked and thoughtful enough to off er to a lot who did not ask. Her favorite color was purple. Violet shades were "the" favorite but she a lways grabbed any shade of purple fabric she could find for her dresses and for the many qui lts, aprons, bonnets and various other sewing wonders that she put together. I can still see h er in my mind sitting at that old Singer sewing machine rocking the big peddle to make it sew.
Her real talent came from her ability to feed the family and frien ds from a supply that some would call next to nothing. The simple foods that mostly came from homegro wn products never and I repeat NEVER tasted simple. They were not big over-eaters but you alwa ys left the table satisfied. We ate cakes, pies and cobblers year round thanks to her canning abiliti es and the stored items that she kept in the cellar. Her cooking flair included original recipes like h er tea cakes and sugar cookies. Grannie was not the least bit shy about wringing a chicken's neck or helpi ng me skin a young armadillo so we could see what it tasted like. She was bett er at those type of chores than most anyone anyway, man or woman. She would fix anything that I killed o ff the land. From their property near the Brazos River we have eaten dove, quail, turkey, deer, fi sh, ducks, geese, armadillo, possum and squirrel. She was always the first out of bed to start the wo od stove and get a food aroma filtering through the house.
One memory that sticks in my mind is of a Sunday morning that we we re leaving the "shack," as their river property home was lovingly called, on our way to chur ch at the Brock Church of Christ. There was a wire gate in the fence and Grandad parked the pickup inside t he fence in front of the house. So to leave we needed to go out the gate. Grandad was the driver until I g ot old enough to drive them. When he pulled near the gate Grannie got out to open the gate. It was appa rent that she had seen something that bothered her but she did not get excited or "rattled" as th ey used to call it. We saw her walk over and pick up a good-sized rock and go back by the gate and thr ow it down. She then calmly picked up a dead 3-foot long rattlesnake and draped it over the fence f or the hawks to find. All this in her "Sunday go to meeting dress and hat".
I am so glad that people live forever in our minds. I hope this writi ng helps stir your own memories of those who knew my "Grannie".

Volume Y, pg. 153: dated 11 January 1848 shows land of the same descript ion being sold to Peter Sager by Reuben Sager for $100.00.
DEATH: The date of 5 April 1883 was sent to me by Susan (Sager) Moore. Re uben Sager was her great, great grandfather. She doesn't give a pla ce of death nor where he was buried. I did not find his death record ed in Clark or Champaign Counties, OH. The family Bible page of Deaths s tates: "Reuben Sager Son of Peter Sager, Died April 5th A.D. 1883. Ag ed 63 yrs. and 8 days." His widow married his brother William on 20 Dece mber 1896 when she was about 53 years old. Reuben and Nancy's children a re listed as children of William in William's obituary - 1935. Also, Will iam's and Nancy's tombstones in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Tremont City, OH s ay "FATHER" and "MOTHER" and are on the same plot beside Reuben and Nancy 's son Winfield Sager's tombstone and their daughter Lillian (Sager) Hartm an's tombstone.
BURIAL: I don't know where Reuben was buried. He does not have a tombsto ne with his wife Nancy in Mt. Calvary Cemetery if he is on her plot. Jo hn E. & Marie Zerkle have the original copy of a deed for the "East si de of lot #118 in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. This was purchased on 21 May 19 10 by Nancy J. Sagers. This date would have been too late for Reuben's bu rial unless he had been cremated and buried after Nancy purchased the plo t. It is probably the plot where Reuben's wife Nancy and her second husb and, Reuben's brother William, were buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Tremo nt City, Clark County, Ohio.

Prosec utor Grace Fern Heck, the only woman prosecuting attorney in this pa rt of the state, announced Mrs. Sagers had signed a confession.
The confession was made and signed in the presence of H. G. Robinson a nd E. Yantis, of the Ohio division of criminal identification at the Lond on prison farm, called into the case earlier in the day by Miss Heck, w ho was not satisfied Sagers had taken his own life. Charges He Abused He r
The prosecutor said that Mrs. Sagers exclaimed her husband had abused her and "got what he deserved." Sagers was fined $12 and costs last Satur day on a charge of assault and battery filed by his wife. He had been arr ested on three other occasions on similar charges during the last two years. After Mrs. Sagers called an undertaker and told him her husband had sh ot himself in the barn, his body was found lying on a truck, the he ad on a pile of neatly arranged sacks. OHIO FARMER KILLED; WIFE ADMITS CRIME
Fed Chickens, Ate Breakfast, Then Called the Undertaker, Confession Says
BODY FOUND ON TRUCK
Investigation Removes First Belief of Suicide Held By Officials
Urbana, July 19 (AP) -- Officials today studied the unique confession of Mrs. Blanche Sagers, 40, in which she told how she murdered her husband, Clarance Sagers, 39, yesterday, then fed the chickens, ate breakfast and waited an hour to call the undertaker. The confession was made to two officials of the Ohio division of criminal identification, E. J. Yantis and H. G. Robinson, and signed in their presence. Mrs. Sagers explained in the confession that her husband, a farmer and World war veteran, abused her and that he "got what he deserved." Sager's body was found on a truck. A string was tied to one finger and to the trigger of a gun which had been fixed on the floor of the barn. Sagers was shot thru the head. The situation first suggested suicide to authorities. Proscecutor Grace Fern Heck was suspicious and called in state officers. Later she announced the confession. In one of Sagers' pockets authorities found a clipping concerning his arrest last Saturday on charges of assault and battery brought by his wife. Another note which he was first supposed to have writen described his financial worries and domestic troubles. In her statement to the proscecutor, Mrs. Sagers said she went out to the barn on their farm before 6 a.m. yesterday and saw her husband sleeping on the truck, his head on a pile of sacks. She said she loaded the gun with one bullet, tied the string to the gun, and then killed her husband after which she ate breakfast.

MOTHER PLEADS NOT GUILTY TO SLAYING MATE
Urbana, O -- July 20 (AP) -- Wearing the same blue gingham dress she had on when she was said to have confessed murdering her husband, Mrs. Blanche Sagers, 40, mother of two small sona, sat quietly in a magistrate's court here today while her attorney entered a plea of not guilty for her. Justice of the Peace T. C. Englehart held Mrs. Sagers to the Champaign-co grand jury on a charge of first degree murder. Mrs. Sagers, whom officers charge killed her husband and then attempted to make his death appear a case of suicide, walked quietly back to her cell. Her two children, Wendell Gene, 12, and Thurell Roger, 11, are being kept in the Champaign-co home while a cousin of the slain man tends to the Sagers' bees on their four-and-one-half acre farm near St. Paris, a village nine miles west of here, where Clarence Sagers, 39-year-old war veteran was slain Wednesday. Mrs. Sagers was quoted as saying her husband had abused her and "got what he deserved."

(Research):Henry's father, JOHN GEORGE, better known as George, was a brother to my g ggrandfather--Michael H. Shaneyfelt, who married Margaret McCarty/McCarth y. About half of George's children, after his death in 1878, moved to Har tselle, Alabama. The other half remained in the north. None of my Shaney felt's moved south, but another branch went to Florida. Most were in sear ch of a warmer place to live, as they had the allergies and "comsumptiv e" illnesses that have come down through the family. We are rampant wi th asthma, allergies, and many, including myself, have an IGA deficienc y. That IGA deficiency means that the A protein in our blood does n ot do it's job of helping us to fight infection, so we are constantly batt ling upper respiratory infections, and so forth. It's been a real eye ope ner for me to do this research. If you are ever interested in the Shaneyf elt history, I have most of them--and the family goes back to Germany--th ey arrived here in America in 1735, and their name was SCHOENFELD when th ey came here. I have seen at least 61 different spellings of the name.

From Joan Cox 6/28/2007 lindsayauctions@gmail.com John Brandenburg who married Elitha Barber. Sometime between their first child Lewis was born in 1869 and 1878 he left Indiana and showed up on the Burnside farm in Michigan where he married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Smith, my great-grandmother. They had 7 children, one of which was my Grandmother. 2 of the children died very young - John was a "no account" and when Lizzie died he put the other 4 up as wards of the State. One, the oldest, Nellie (Sarah Ellen) was indentured. My Grandmother was a dopted and her name changed. All of our information, including census records match what you have listed. The only thing we have never been able to ascertain was if John and Elitha were "divorced" or did he just abandon her and eventually married my Great-Grandmother (which would have meant he was married to two people at once). Since you have Elitha remarried to Minor Evilsizer I just wondered if you might have a record of John and Elitha's official separation or divorce, whatever they called it at the time. John did not die until 1901 in Sturgis, MI and is buried in an unmarked grave in the military section of Oak Lawn Cemetery there. last record we found in Indiana was a deed record from he and Elitha selling a 1/2 acre plot to Elias Mayo. That was 9/16/1876. There were no documents that we could find on him or Elitha until the marriage record of him to Lizzie on December 25, 1878 in Branch County, MI.

John Thackery was born in England; died 19 September 1839, 51 years 2 mont hs 14 days buried in Newsom Chapel Cemetery, Jackson Township, Champaign C ounty, Ohio. He married in England, Elizabeth … (born in England; died 2 D ecember 1866, 76 years 6 months 27 days; buried in the Newsom Chapel Cemet ery). The History of Champaign County. 1881 by Beers & Co., Pages 742-7 43 (sketch of Duncan Thackery), relate that John and Elizabeth migrated fr om England in 1829 and later in that same year, 1829, settled in Jackson T ownship, Champaign County. The article goes on to say that John Thackery w as unable to purchase land, therefore a Mr. Patterson, entered 80 acr es of land for him and waited until Thackery could repay him for the lan d, furthermore, John was able to purchase land in Iowa before he died. The se statements raise several questions that can not be answered and more re search must be conducted. Exactly, on what ship, where and when did the family en ter the country? Where did John and Elizabeth swear an oath to adhere to t he laws of the United States? Why, if they had just entered the country, d id they appear to have been bound for Champaign County? It appears very strange in my mind that they could have been new immigrants and heard th at there was land for sale in Champaign County, and even though they cou ld not afford it they traveled to Champaign County, found or met a frien d, Mr. Patterson, and he trusted them enough to purchase land for them! Fu rthermore, within the ten years that John Thackery lived in Champaign Coun ty he not only paid for the land but purchased land in Iowa! Why did he pu rchase land in Iowa? None of his children appear to have moved to the land as most can be accounted for as living within the area of Champaign or Cla rk County, Ohio. (On the other hand, Duncan Thackery, did have a daught er that moved to Packwood, Iowa; Mary Thackery Ryman. As the sketch in t he 1881 History relates, Duncan Thackery did purchase large tracts of la nd and it is the thought of this author that it was Duncan that purcha se a tract of land in Iowa, not John Thackery.) On 3 January 1831 John "Thackwray" received a patent from Andrew Jackso n, President, for 86.56 acres of land located in the east half of the nort h-east quarter of Section 18 (Champaign County Deed Book 141, Page 328). T here is not a deed in Section 18 Jackson Township under the name of any Pa tterson. On 9 November 1857, for land in Section 18 Township 3 Range 10 (J ackson Township), John Thackery et al transferred by quitclaim their inter est to 2/7 of land to Duncan Thackery (Champaign County Deed Book 29, Pa ge 595), indicating that John and a sibling (whose name is unknown until t he deed has been viewed) sold their share to Duncan. On 7 January 1858, Du ncan Thackery sold by warrenty deed, 3/7 interests to Henry Thackery (Cham paign County Deed Book 29, Page 595) (shares of Duncan, John and the unkno wn sibling). On 14 January 1858 Henry Thackery et al transferred (no fract ion listed) by quitclaim deed to Robert Thackery (Deed Book 29, Page 596 ). The next deed that was filed which will surely pertain to the John Thac kery land was an affidavit filed on 27 October 1944, when Ella Gabriel registered a "Statement of History to Farm" for the Thackery Farm (Miscell aneous Book 1, Page 371). The History of Champaign County also relates that John and Elizabeth we re the parents of six children that immigrated with them and another chil d, which was born in Ohio. As there appears to be seven portions of intere st in the land held by the heirs, and then we can conclude that all liv ed to maturity. John's estate was under the administration of Duncan and Elizabeth Thacker y. An inventory and appraisal was dated 18 January 1840 and a final accou nt was dated 3 March 1841 (Estate Packet A-219). Neither will nor Chance ry Court Record was found concerning the estate of John Thackery.

A lady in Preble county thought the were raised by a Quaker Family (The S tubbs or Roberts) Otto Ferst was born in Missouri 1860, William P. Fer st in Preble County 1864, and William A.
