Man Killed While Chopping Down Tree
Tree Strikes Telephone Pole Which Breaks and Falls Striking Man Below
One of the saddest deaths of recent years, that it has been our duty to record is that of the untimely death of John Ebilsisor, well known farmer of Leavenworth. The accident happened about 12 o'clock on Monday noon and in less than an hour after, he passed away, never regaining consciousness. In company with his neighbor, George Hegler, they were engaged in cutting down a big tree a half mile south of the John Grabner farm. The two men had expected the tree to fall in an altogether different direction than it did and that was the cause of the terrible accident. The tree was close to the telephone wires and a telephone pole and they cut the tree in such a way that it ought to have fallen away from the wires.
Unfortunately it fell over the wires and the telephone pole was broken off and the top of the pole struck John on the left shoulder and breast felling him to the ground. Mr Hegler who had ran towards his team as soon as the tree began to fall did not see the accident but when he turned around he s w his friend and neighbor laying on the ground with the pole laying on
him. He immediately ran into an adjoining field and told a Mr Cousins, who was husking corm and they took the injured man to the home of Mr Hegler. On reaching the house John was taken in and the wife notified. Dr Strickler was sent for and went out to the scene of the accident , but the poor fellow passed away before anyone could get there. He breathed very feebly for an hour when he died. Dr Strickler examined the body and found that the pole struck the shoulder and left side of the chest breaking the co llarbone and breaking the left arm near the shoulder and also at the wrist. His internal injuies were of such a serious character that his entire circulation was injured and life could not last long. He was
conscious until he passed away. Funeral took place Thursday at Sleepy Eye, at the German M E church, Rev John Schneider, conducting the services. Deceased was the son of Mr and Mrs George Ebilsisor of this city. He was born in the town of Leavenworth in 1872 and was united in marriage to Miss Amie Peterson in 1898 who with one son and two small daughters survive h m. John Ebilsisor was a strong and vigorous man, just the kind of a man you would think was capable of withstanding all obstacles and livi ng to be an old man. He was a man of the best of character, honest and industrious, he enjoyed the good will and friendship of all who knew him. His untimely death, without a warning is a sad reminder of the uncertainty of life and certainty of death. His sad death is a terrible blow to the bereave wife and children and their many friends deeply mourn with them. The funeral was largely attended and the body in the Home Cemetery.

(Research):Champaign Co, Early Settlers The Hermit of Mad River January 22, 1958 Champaign county can boast of once having a hermit. G. Oren Steinberger, b orn 1857, was an apt pupil in his boyhood days, a college graduate, a nd as a young man a cultured professor in the arts college at Wittenberg C ollege. He was already an artist of note, having painted a picture call ed "The Accolada" which met with considerable success. Too, he was very mu ch interested in the biology of animal and plant life. Strange things c an happen though to change the course ofone's lifetime and such was the ca se of Oren Steinberger. In the prime of his young manhood he was informed that he was the vict im of tuberculosis and advised by his doctor to spend as much ofhis ti me as possible in the open air. To do this he resigned his position at Wit tenberg and returned to his father's home. Born in the Mad River valley, Steinberger as a boy became familiar with t he valley, including the well known Cedar Swamp, where sumac, willow and e lder mingled with the cedars to form a bird paradise seldom found elsewher e. The carpet of the swamp, moss of silvery green spilled over the ferns a nd flowering plants of interminable colors and beauty. Plants so rare th at nature lovers have journeyed miles to search for specimens found no oth er place in Ohio. A short distance above this swamp and about a half or three quarte rs of a mile below the site of the old Steinberger mill, Oren Steinberg er selected a mammoth elm tree as a place to build a tree house, in whi ch he planned to live and sleep, and if possible master the dread disea se with which he had been told he was afflicted. In my opinion Steinberg er had chosen well. In the vicinity surrounding the great elm, other stately trees spread the ir branches high in the air, and here and there among these branches, six ty to seventy feet above the ground, the hawk, the crow, and many varieti es of the fish-eating birds had their nests and raised their young. While along the river, the night prowling opossum, the raccoon, the min k, weasel and skunk diligently searched for their means of livelihood. Wh en a light skiff of snow covered the ground the tell-tale tracks of the ra bbit, as he hopped among the bushes and brambles, crossing and recrossi ng the tracks of all the others gave mute evidence of the numerous inhabit ants of this animal city where Steinberger had chosen to make his home. The tree house which he constructed was on his father's farm. It was eigh ty feet above ground, large enough to accommodate living and sleeping quar ters His mode of ingress and egress was by means of a block and tackle with ro pe which reached from house to the ground. At one end of the rope was atta ched a basket affair in which a chair reposed. Sitting down in the cha ir he reached out and pulled on the other end of rope and up he went. Wi th the block and tackle arrangement it was no great effort to hoist himsel f. Coming down was still easier. Living way up there he had a good view of t he surrounding country , as well as all that went on in the tree tops a nd the ground floor below. He made his living by hunting, trapping and fishing while his neighbors ke pt him supplied with newspapers, magazines and some articles offood. In h is spare time he followed his hobby of sketching nature pictures many of w hich were rare and interesting. He spent much time at the swamp studying p lant, insect and bird life, ofwhich he became an authority. For fourteen years he lived in the tree house, then a violent wind storm b lew it apart. By that time his T.B. was conquered, but he had beco me so in love with his mode ofwild life that he built a cabin on the grou nd and continued to live there. Visitors he had plenty and were always welcome. He loved to tell the stori es of his many encounters with nature, but the minute anyone began to inqu ire into his personal life he clammed shut and would not discuss it. By 1935 he was becoming an old man with long white hair and beard, his nei ghbors thought him not physically able to provide for himself any mo re so they talked him into going to the county home. At first he violent ly opposed it but finally consented to try what he called civilized lif e. He didn't like it and only stayed a short time and returned to his cab in until 1937. Bad winter weather approaching, the County Officials were at their wits en d. They feared he would freeze to death in his cabin which was in poor rep air . He positively refused to go back to the Home, so they declared him a vagra nt, arrested him and confined him to the county jail. Charles Ritchie, who was at that time county surveyor, had a comfortable c abin at Zane Caverns which he offered to let Steinberger have to go the re and reside. He gladly accepted. They procurred an old age pension for h im and there at Zane Caverns he passed his remaining days, happy to be ba ck again, living the wild life he loved so well. He passed away on Decemb er 12, 1946, having lived to be the ripe old age of eighty-wight years.

(Research):I see John Davis & Permelia Maxson who I recognize as 7th Day Baptists, ri esidents of New Salem, VA and a large group of folks who migrated fr om NJ to PA to VA in late 18th Cen. My Davis family headed by Abel & Mary Davis migrated from Monongalia Co ., VA to Salem Township, Champaign Co., OH about 1818. Many membe rs of my Davis family were b. in Champaign Co., e.g. Isaac Mason Davi s, b. 6 Jan 1827, Bunker Hill and Joseph W. Davis, mygreat grandfathe r, b. 10 Feb 1828 in Salem Twp.,both sons of John (son of Abel & Mary) a nd Mary (Newland) Davis. This Davis family appears to be related to Harri son Family as James Davis Harrison, age 9 was counted with Peter B. Davi s, s/o John & mary Davis. Several other Harrison children were with oth er related Davis families. The Harrison children were sons & daughte rs of Benjamin Harrison [1810-1847] & Elizabeth Mathis / Matthews. Benja min Harrison was b. in Pike Co., OH and is apparently buried there andis a lleged to be a cousin of President Benjamin Harrison.

Some days since, Wm (sic) Webster Journell, while painting the ventilators on the fathers barn, slipped and fell upon a very steep roof. He had taken the precaution, however, to attach a rope to his body and fastened it to the ventilator. He came down within five or six ffet of the eave with great frce, and if he had had time he doubtless would have offered up a prayer for the security of that rope, but almost in the twinkling of an eye the rope proved to be his safeguard and he ascended the roof looking much as though he had just got up from a bed of sickness.

Married Under Difficulties
There was a wedding at the Probate Judge's office Thursday which savo rs of the ridiculous, and shows what bashfulness will do at a critical poi nt. The bride was a young lady by the name of Miss Roda Maggart, a short c hubby little woman, who has been making home Columbus. The groom, Sylvest er Pence, of Johnson township, was a six foot young fellow, who had promis ed to marry Miss Roda last fall, but failed to keep his promise. The you ng woman becoming tired of waiting on him, resolved to have the matter con summated, and last night sent for the young man, and informed him he mu st make his word good. This morning they drove over to the city and went to the Proba te Judge for the documents that forever tie them up in connubial bliss. L ee Todd was dispatched for Rev. Mr. Brodbeck, to come and tie the offici al knot. In the meantime, the court house officials and several outside rs dropped in to see that the performance went off all right. When the mi nister arrived, the bride requested that the room be cleared, as she want ed a quiet wedding. Several of the spectators took the hint, but Sheriff C hamberlin, Clerk Maitland, Sam Woods and Jno. M. Pence, thought they we re privileged characters, and remained. The bridal party then adjourn ed to the other room, but these four were bent on seeing the thing throu gh and followed into the room. Here the lady positively refused to be mar ried unless these four hangers on were excluded, and again the bridal par ty adjourned to another room, and locked the door. The brass had by th is time departed from the faces of the four officials, and they were forc ed to give up the pleasure of seeing the couple married. Then in the silen ce of tha troom, with no one present, but the minister and Lee Todd, th ey were married, and two more hearts were made to beat as one. Almost i mmediately after the wedding of Sylvester Pence and Miss Roda Maggar t, at the Probate Judge's office, the happy couple repaired to a saloon wh ere they held the wedding festivities. The bride and groom both gave vent to the delight they were anticipating in their new relatio ns to each other. The groom became rather well filled up, and the bri de of a few moments, gave evidence of her ability to get away with a lar ge quantity of the hilarious beverage. The last heard of them they were g oing home in rather a badly intoxicated condition, and if the first st ep of their married life is a criterion of their future life then they wi ll live a life of turbulence.
2/12/1904 SYL VESTER PENCE plead guilty in Cincinnati Wednesday to the charge of for gery and was sentenced to one year in the penitentiary .After which he wi ll be brought to this county to answer similar charges.

«tab»DAVID BUROKER. -- In the list of the early pioneers who crossed the plains
in 1864, enduring all the hardships and privations incident to frontier life in
any new country, occurs the name of David Buroker, the subject of this sketch.
Mr. Buroker was born in the Shenandoah valley, Virginia, December 17, 1818, and
although now seventy-five years of age bears his years in a wonderful manner,
being as active and energetic as many who have not much more than reached the
prime of life.
«tab»He attends to his extensive farming interests and gives every promise of
living to be an hundred. His father, Martin Buroker, was a native of Virginia,
of German parentage, while his mother, Ellen Griffith, a native of Virginia, was
of Welsh descent. In 1834, some time after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Buroker
removed to Ohio, remaining in that State until their death, the father passing
away in 1854, at an advanced age, his wife having preceded him many years
before. They were the parents of eighteen children, of whom our subject was the
third youngest.
«tab»Our subject did not enjoy very extensive educational advantages, but made
the most of the opportunities afforded by the little schools of his county,
attending when unpropitious weather interfered with farm work. In 1856, Mr.
Buroker removed to Missouri; remained there three years, then proceeded to Iowa,
where he remained until 1864, when he crossed the plains to Washington
Territory, consuming about six months in making the trip. Being pleased with the
country near Walla Walla, he located there on rented land, which he farmed for
one year. He then removed to the Willamette valley where he remained three years
on rented land. After this he returned to Walla Walla, purchased on Mill creek
160 acres, which he afterward sold and then bought 240 acres, which he
subsequently disposed of, and in this way dealt in real estate until he soon was
possessed of sufficient means to permit the retaining of the 500 acres of
excellent land he now owns, situated seven miles northeast of Walla Walla. He
also owns 120 acres near the city itself. So large is his estate that four
country roads and two railroads pass through it, -- something that can be said
of no other farm in the State. Of course all this has made his property
exceedingly valuable.
«tab»Our subject was married in Ohio, to Miss Sarah Jinkins, a native of that
State, and of this union seven children have been born, namely: Jonas, who
resides on Mill creek; Mary Ann. wife of John Crawford, resides in Idaho;
Louisa, wife of Jacob Kibler, resides on Mill creek; Ellen, wife of S.O.
Williams, resides on Dry creek; Noah, residing on Dry creek; William H., who
also resides on Dry creek; and Etta, wife of James Patterson, resides with her
parents and has two bright children, Judson and Bessie.
«tab»In politics Mr. Buroker is a stanch Republican, steadfastly upholding the
principles of his party. Although a very poor man when he started to earn his
own livelihood, our subject has grown to be one of the wealthiest farmers of
Walla Walla county. Notwithstanding he has more than sufficient to supply all
his wants and those of his wife for the remainder of their days, his active
disposition will not allow him to remain inactive while there is anything to be
accomplished; and to these habits are due in great part his excellent health.
Throughout the entire county Mr. Buroker is esteemed and respected, and parents
urge their young sons to emulate his example in fighting the world and its
temptations. In spite of the many misfortunes that attended his earlier efforts
Mr. Buroker never allowed himself to be discouraged, but patiently labored on,
and now reaps the results of his labors.

After reviewing the ancestral information CWH mentions above there is no c onnection listed, i.e. John George Lee Sr.Ős father, to substantiate a con nection to Robert E. Lee of Civil War fame, other than the fact that Jo hn George Lee was born in Virginia. Who his parents were is a question th ose of us in this generation and the next will have to search out. MLK] S ee page 106 and 112.
I do not know at this time (1937) anything of Richard Wallace LeeŐs life p revious to his coming to Ohio. It is said that the Family lived at or ne ar Martinsburg, Virginia [West Virginia] and that he was born at Martinsbu rg Oct 9, 1808, which is not far from Melrose, Va., where so many of his a ncestors lived and were buried. Although the records have never been veri fied, it is known that his father was of the Virginia Lees, as will be se en later
Richard W. Lee was the baby one year of age when his parents emigrated f rom Virginia to Ohio in 1809 and less than two years of age when they ca me to Champaign Co., Ohio in 1810." Champaign Co. was a vast wilderness w ith no roads, bridges, or anything and infested with Indians ready to ki ll the early settlers. In fact, the government had a fort at Springfie ld and a stockade built for the protection of the Settlers from the Indian s. There were few houses and no schools or churches at that time.
The John G. Lee family located on a farm about 3 miles No. E of Urbana, ne ar Mt. Tabor, Ohio, in 1810 and lived ther until the death of John G. L ee Jan 10, 1816. Richard was a boy then of 7 years and two brothers olde r. His mother was left a widow with 4 children and one born April 6, aft er her husbands death. After John G. LeeŐs death his wife lost the farm a nd she then rented a small farm for two years and with the help of her bo ys they managed to make a living on this small place.
In 1818 Elizabeth Lee purchased 80 acres, 8 miles So. W of Urbana and abo ut 2 miles East of Terra Haute, Ohio, where the family moved in 1819 and l ived for many years. Richard W. Lee was then 11 years if age, his broth er James A. was 14, his brother John G. Jr. was 3 and his Sister Fannie w as 6. The older brother having died in 1813. So it can be seen that the se older boys had to do a mans work in the field and timber and clear t he farm of brush and trees so it could be farmed
I do not know anything of the early life or education Richard W. Lee a nd I have heard that he could not read or write and little wonder at th at time in a wilderness with not schools in existence. The older childr en helped their Mother pay for this farm and remained at home with her f or several years.
Richard Wallace Lee was married to Mary Nancy Ward about 1828 or 1829. Al so a girl of a pioneer Family of Mad River Twp. in Champaign Co. As a you ng man he drove a stage coach between Springfield, Ohio, and Upper Sandusk y, Ohio, a distance of about 110 miles at that time. I do not know whe re Richard W. Lee and Mary Nancy were married or the exact date.
Richard W. Lee was one of the first settlers in Mifflin Twp. Wyandot Co ., having located there in 1827 and purchased 41 acres, Sec. 33, 10 mil es S. W. of Upper Sandusky, Ohio. (See the John Hankins record of the ear ly pioneers in Wyandot Co.) This is about 75 miles No. E. of Urbana, Oh io on the old stage coach road. He built a house on this place and liv ed there about 25 years until they went to Iowa in 1853. I do not kn ow of them ever living in Champaign Co. as I can find no records there. T he children were all born in Wyandot, Co. on the old Lee farm, as it is kn own.
In October 1853, they moved to Iowa. This is the Family of Richard Walla ce Lee [see Page 7] and his first wife, Mary Nancy Ward Lee, as it was wh en they left Upper Sandusky. They had 8 children then, the oldest one w as 24 and the youngest was 7 years of age. Two of their daughters were ma rried and their oldest son, John G. Lee Jr. was married to Harriet McCo rd enroute to Iowa. The hardships of the pioneers of those days was bad f or everyone and especially bad for the women and children. A 600 mile tr ip from Ohio to Iowa with the slow moving oxen and horses with heavy wago ns and bad roads was no pleasure trip for anyone, much less small childre n. It makes us think that we have never given these pioneer men and wom en the credit that they deserve in taking the risks and going through t he hardships they did to help make a better place for us to live today.
Mary Nancy Ward Lee died Nov 28, 1853, about six weeks after they left Oh io for Iowa. She died at Forrest, Illinois, in McLain County about 60 m iles east of Peoria. [Note: In reviewing maps in Jan 1988, Forrest is in L ivingston Co., Ill. The spelling of "McLain" County is McLean Co.] She be came sick there and the Family remained there quite a while. I have hea rd that she died of Typhoid fever, but never knew the exact cause or any p articulars of her death, but they buried her there, somewhere and the Fami ly proceeded on their way to Iowa. How sad and heartbroken these childr en must have been to leave their Mother along the way in a strange count ry and where they could never even see her grave.
Many years after her death (about 30) her Son James E. (Doc) Lee with cons iderable effort, succeeded in locating her grave and moved her remai ns to the Cedar Bethel Cemetery near Letts, Iowa. She was around 45 yea rs of age at her death and most all of her children were from 7 to 18 yea rs of age. Her Mother (Grandma)Ward was with the family and looked aft er the children the best she could until her death. Grandma Ward was buri ed in the old Edgington Cemetery, later called the Masonholder Cemete ry 5 miles No. West of Letts and was later removed by her Grandsons, Jam es E. and Robert W. Lee, to the Lee Family lot in Cedar Bethel Cemetery wh ere her daughter and many of her descendants were buried. This cemetery w as known as the Lee Cemetery and after the church was built there it was c alled Cedar Bethel. The church has since burned down and was never rebuil t. The town of Letts was known then as "Ononwa" and changed to Letts abo ut 1882.
After the death of his wife Mary Nancy Ward Lee, Richard W. Lee ca me on to Iowa, crossing the Mississippi River on a Ferry boat at Muscatin e, Iowa. They proceeded on about 19 miles So. West where they had a log c abin that he had built previous on a homestead 3 miles west of Letts, Iow a. There were no railroads in Iowa at that time and no village of Let s. Later it was just a trading post called "Onowna" until about 1882 wh en the name was changed to Letts.
The Lee Family arrived in Louisa County in mid-Dec. and it was bitter col d. The family did the best they could, some staying with other pioneer fa milies - The John Idle family - and others that had been neighbors in Cham paign Co., Ohio. This John Idle was a brother of Mary (Aunt Polly) Idle L ee and she married John Geo. Lee Jr. The Lee's and Idle's were old neighb ors and the oldest settlers of Mad River Twp. in Champaign Co. Another Id le, Irvin, married Susan Lee, a daughter of Wm. W. Lee. Another brothe r, John Idle went to Louisa Co. in 1848 and located his homestead. Richa rd W. Lee went there two years later (1850) and located his homestead a nd built a log cabin on it and then prepared to leave Ohio. He lived on t his homestead for three years and became dissatisfied after the death of h is first wife
I do not know who looked after his family of children after coming to Loui sa Co., Iowa, in 1853, unless his daughter b who was then 15 years old loo ked after them or that they stayed with the other married Sister, Eliazabe th or Fannie. Nancy was married to Hugh Brown about 1856 and some of t he younger children stayed with her.
Richard W. Lee was married again in 1855 to Nancy Summers in Louisa Co .. This his second wife was not known to me but I have heard that she al so died. When or where is not known. They did not have any children a nd I have heard that she objected looking after or caring for his childr en and left him In another paragraph CWH writes Đ ŇIn some of the old let ters recorded there is a Nancy Gurland mentioned. This girl was a young w oman about 25 and may be the same girl. I do not know just how long th ey lived together or when or where thy were married or lived or what ev er became of her. I have heard that they separated after a short time bec ause she was young and could not get along with his children; would not h elp look after them and was too popular with other younger men. She to ld him that she did not marry the whole family. Again I have heard that s he married him for his money and a good time. She claimed that she did n ot know he had a family of small children. I never knew any of the true p articulars of this marriage or seen anyone that knew any of the facts or d etails about her. I did not know anything about this when my Grandmoth er Fannie Hankins was living or she could have told me all about it and ma ny other things that I will never be able to find out.
He later married again, a young widow by the name of Margaret Moyer, who h ad been married before to a man named Perday. Nothing is known of her bir th or where they lived or when or where they separated. I have heard th at he gave her one thousand dollars and told her to go and never to retur n. The reason I never knew anything of or where she went or when or whe re she died. She had one daughter by the name of Mary Jane Perday
Richard and Margaret had one daughter, Rosella Lee. She was a half sist er of Frances Ann Lee Hankins and I remember my grandmother speaking of h er half sister but remember no particulars. Rosella Lee married a m an by the name of ______ Bishop. The last I heard (1922) they lived at Pu eblo, Colorado. She had a family but I never knew anything of them a nd I do not know of any correspondence, either to or from them, by anyon e. I have heard that Rosella had red hair and have found several descende nts of the LeeŐs with red hair. I also heard that after she married Mr. B ishop and lived in Pueblo, Colorado, that she had two boys that got into s ome kind of trouble and she quit writing to anyone. I remember when I w as small of my Grandmother Hankins speak of hearing form Rosella
Richard W. Lee and this 3rd wife Margaret Moyer separated because she w as young and wanted to have a good time, would not stay home and run arou nd with younger men. I never knew anything of her or what ever beca me of her, but I heard that Richard W. Lee gave her a thousand dollars a nd told her never to come back.
Richard W. Lee would ride away on his horse and be gone a month at a tim e. He went to Ringgold Co., in 1856 and located some land So. W. of Kelle rton. He purchased it at $1.25 per acre in Greenbacks and paying for it w ith gold. This is when the premium of gold was $380 and Greenbacks were a lmost worthless. He turned the farms he had in Louisa Co. over to his son s, James E. and Robert W. He, with his oldest son John Lee and his wife H arriet his daughter Fannie and her husband Lewis Hankins and their three c hildren, and his daughters Mary and Susan Lee moved to Ringgold Co. and lo cated on the farm So. W. of Kellerton. Lewis Hankins and family liv ed on this farm until they moved into Kellerton in 1888. He gave all h is children a farm and built two fine houses on the farms in Louisa Co. a nd financed them all in many ways
He was married again, the 4th time to a pioneer girl of that county by t he name of Pathenia Ellis about 1870. He was about 61 years of age Đ s he was 41 years of age. The Bible records show that they were marri ed in Decatur Co., Iowa, on Jan 13, 1870. Pathenia Ellis was a daught er of a pioneer family in Decatur Co. She died July 7, 1912 at their ho me 2 miles west of Decatur. She survived her husband about 24 years. S he was buried the the Woodmanse Cemetery. They always lived in this local ity West of Decatur and near the Grand River where he owned considerable l and and operated several saw mills. Richard W. Lee was always known as Di ck Lee both in Ohio and Iowa and all who knew him. His last wife was alwa ys known as Grandma or Granny Lee. Their old home, a large rambling hous e, formerly used for a tavern or Inn is still (1938) standing on the sou th side of the highway about 2 miles west of Decatur and about a mile sou th of the Woodmanse cemetery where they are buried.
They had a son Richard E. Lee and a daughter Eliza Lee Miller (see Page 26 ). The son, Richard E. Lee, lived on the old home place until 1935 (duri ng the depression 1931 - 35) when he lost it through a mortgage and was li ving farther on west on the Grand River. I heard later that he had mov ed to a farm up north of there near Van Wert, Iowa. The daughter, Eliz a, lives at the top of Grand River hill where they have lived for many yea rs. The children of Richard W. Lee and his Grandchildren of his last wi fe still live in Decatur and Davis Counties (1938)
Richard W. Lee named a small village in Southern Ringgold Co. "Lee" and an other on the Grand River "Terra Haute" after his old home town in Champai gn Co., Ohio. He built a large place in Decatur Co. about 2-1/2 miles we st of Decatur City and lived there until he died Feby 5, 1888. He also ow ned considerable land along the Grand River at the time of his deat h. He was buried in the "Woodmanse" Cemetery 3 miles West of Decatur, Io wa and about 1/2 mile north of his old home. He has a large monument on h is lot and the inscription on it states that he was born in 1800 but I fi nd from many records that this is not correct and his correct birth da te is Oct 9, l808.
I never saw my Great-Grandfather, Richard W. Lee, as I was only six yea rs of age at the time of his death. I never saw Grandma Lee [Pathenia Ell is Lee], she died July 7, 1912. I do not know where he lived or made h is home up to the time he was last married (Jan 13, 1870) unless it was wi th his married children in Ringgold Co.

A descendant named Elmo Aleshire of Springfield, Oh told Flossie Hulsiz er in a telephone conversation on 16 July 1978 that a Mansfield Ohio cous in told him that Elijah's middle initial was The letter "H". There is a fa mily story that Elijah descends from Robert Morris, the signer of the Decl aration and the Financier of the Revolution, but have not been able to ma ke the connection to date. There is a POSSIBILITY that Elijah's brother w as John Morris (wife Grace Kinney). Elijah was one of the administrato rs of John;s estate dated October 10, 1839 in Clark County, Ohio. The orig inal papers are in file A842 in the Springfield County Historical Societ y. There are also several (13?0 deeds in the recorders office, Springfiel d, Clark Co, OH showing dispersal of John Morris' real estate. On Janua ry 1, 1833 John Morris and wife grace sold 143 3/4 acres in Section 5 Town ship 4 Range 10 to Elijah Morris for $646.87. It is recorded in Deed Bo ok Volume K, page 576 Recorders Office, Springfield, Clark Co, OH. Th is is the same land that John Morris bought from the U S Bank on 1 Nov 18 31 for the same amount of money. It is recorded in Deed Book Volume I pa ge 192. At this time Flossie believes that this Elijah Morris was John's s on and not Elijah Morris Sr.
There are about 4 Elijah Morris men in Clark/Champaign County records, t wo of those often refereed to as "Jr". Also note the listing below of Elij ah age 15 and Angeline age 11 on the 1850 and 1860 Census. We are assumi ng they are grandchildren of Elijah and Jane (children of james)

Parentage is not proven. Facts to support- A few days before her birth, L ewis and Mary were in Carthage Illinois. This was the only family in th is city. The census was enumerated about two weeks before she was bor n. As her cremated remains were returned here, I have to believe she w as their daughter. Her death certificate says she never married and the in formant was Jeffrey Courter. My support for this is the death certifica te of her father which indicates he is buried in the same cemetery.
Spoke with wife of Jeff Courter 10/10/2000 and she informs me he was ju st an attorney that handled her affairs. No family info available.
SS Application indicates birth was Nov 5, 1913. Death Cert says 1910.

Samuel & Polly sold 133a to their sons, Conway, James & Nelson on 11 Mar 1 844 (Deed Book R, Pages 492-493). On 11 March 1845 Conway Rector sold 15 0a to Daniel R. Bell (Deed Book S, Page 252), however, on 26 March 1845 Ma ry, wife of Samuel; Conway & Fanny Ann, his wife; Nelson & Alice, his wi fe & James & Mary Ann, his wife, made a Quit Claim Deed to Daniel R. Be ll (Deed Book S, Page 253). Samuel Rector did not sign this last deed a nd I don't know why. If he divorced Mary I don't think that I have the re cord. I don't have a place of death for Mary Weaver Rector. Samuel's dea th may also be off by a few years and he may have died prior 26 March 1845 .
World family tree shows him with another marriage to a Charlotte Templeton
This was not the same Samuel Rector who married Thanbott/Thankful Templet on on 14 January 1819 in Champaign County. This Samuel may have been a de scendant of Daniel Rector and Nancy Ann Oldham, but if he is I found no re cord of him.

JOHN BUSHONG, farmer; P. O. Terre Haute. We are pleased to notice such m en as the one whose name heads this sketch, as he is every way wort hy to be represented in the history of the county in which he has resid ed during the past thirty years. As a man of correct habits, he is witho ut a peer; and, as a gentleman, suffice it to say that Old Virginia blo od flows in his veins, and his reputation among those that know h im is of the highest order. His parents, Peter and Elizabeth (Fatick) Bush ong, were married, probably, in 1814. Peter was born in Virginia, and Eliz abeth in Pennsylvania. Peter was engaged in farming in Virginia, coming We st and settling in Indiana in 1859. His death occurred in 1867. He was a p rosperous man, making a good living, but accumulating slowly. His wife, El izabeth, died in Virginia, in 1855. Their children were eight in number-Lv dia, John, Catharine, Philip, Mary, Andrew, Hannah and Elizabeth ; all a re living in Indiana except John, our subject. He came to Ohio in 184 7. He was married in Virginia to Miss Sarah Dingledine ; their two elde st children-Mary and Catharine-were born in Virginia; Hannah, Martha, Jam es and John were born in this county; Mary is the wife of John Davis; Hann ah married William Michael, and Martha wedded Josiah Smiley. The childr en all live near or with them, and the family circle is unbroken. The fir st settlement of Mr. Bushong was on tire farm now owned by Samuel Diber t, but was previously owned by his wir'e's father, Philip Dingledine. M r. Bushong has made the most of his money by hard labor and good managemen t. His present home is an elegant farm of 248 acres in one tract, and is o ne of the most home-like places we have seen; a comfortable, neatly furnis hed house, splendid barns and outbuildings, a happy family and well-stock ed larder serve to make life enjoyable in the highest degree. His reco rd is such that his children may point to it with pride, and they may we ll profit by his experience. Himself and wife have been members of the Lut heran Church for more than a quarter of a century.
