[NI8448] A CENTENNIAL BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY OF CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, OHIO pg19-22
Joseph Kizer wa.s a representative and progressive citizen and a very prominent man in his locality. For many years he held the office of justice of the peace, and in the latter part of his life became a member of the Baptist church, dying in that faith at the age of eighty-nine years.
His wife was called to her final rest when she had reached the eightieth milestone on the journey of life

[HI8448] (Research):Per Paul Grisham, Joseph Keyser and his wife, Catherine Comer, his mothe r, Elizabeth Baker Kiser, and some of his siblings, along with a fairly la rge group of people from Shenandoah, County, Virginia, moved, about 18 13 to Champaign County, Ohio.

[HI8449] (Research): He died of Yellow Fever along with several of his children, per Ann Ha rt Stewart. His body was interred 1799 in Keyser Cemetery, Luray, V A. He is buried in the Old Keyser Farm in Page County, Virginia. In t he family graveyard are several rough, unhewn grave stones of native bl ue limestone on which inscriptions have been carved by an unskilled workma n. All of these stones appear to have been set up at the same time, and c arved by the same hand. An attempted reading of one is as follows: "He re lies the body of C. Keyser. He was born ----- 1752 ------- 1799." Charles reported for active duty in Virginia. Charles Keyser, Jr., serv ed as a private in the Virginia Troup during the Revolutionary Wa He sold property in Shenandoah Co, Va, 9 Dec 1790. The following individ ual is also linked to this event: Andrew Keyser (Grantee). Per Mead Relati ons by Pritchard: "Charles Keyser, Jr., and Elizabeth, his wife, by de ed of 9 Dec 1790, recorded in deed book "I" page 265, conveyed unto Andr ew Keyser a parcel of fifty-seven acres of land in Shenandoah County, Va ., on the north side of the South Branch of the Shenandoah River, describ ed as part of land conveyed to Charles Keyser, deceased, by Lewis Rhinehar t, Mathias Rhinehart and Elizabeth, his wife, by deeds of lease and relea se dated the 6th and 7th days of April, 1765, and recorded in Frederick Co unty, Va. The conveyance recites that Charles Keyser, deceased, dying inte state, the land descended to his eldest son, Charles Keyser." He sold property in Shenandoah Co, Va, 29 Dec 1793. The following indivi dual is also linked to this event: Andrew Keyser (Grantee). On 29 Dec 179 3, Charles Keyser and Elizabeth his wife executed a deed to Andrew Keys er for 57 acres of the aforesaid tract, (see Charles Keyser, Sr.) stati ng among other things "and the said Charles Kyser deceased dieing intesta te the same descended to his eldest son charles Kyser". Shenandoah Co. De ed book 1-265. Data from Shenandoah Co. Will Book E, pages 160-162; Russe ll Co, Va Will Book 3, page 175; Page County Will Book A, page 98; Keys er Family Descendants by Charles S. Keyser, page 153; Forerunners by Stric kler, page 120. Charles's will was probated in Shenandoah Co, Va, 12 Sep 1799. His appra isement, dated 12 Sep is recorded in Will Book E page 160, and a partial s ettlement of his estate is in Will book F page 366. Charles was the elde st son and by English Law, without a will, all land went to the oldest so n. He also inherited the two old Deutsche Bibles. After his death his so n, Joseph, took them with him to Ohio.

If you wish, I can provide you with the research of Ron Brelsford, a Bod ey descendant, who spent years in Germany in U. S. Military (Government) s ervice, who with my help commissioned a professional researcher in Hannover to help in finding the German origins of Friedri ch Bode. Ron's interest has been almost exclusively in the Hessian milita ry component of all this, and he is finally getting a condensed fo rm of a larger essay published by the Johannes Schwalm group in South Caro lina which specializes on Hessian soldiers who became American settlers, a nd publishes a magazine in this interest. Friedrich was captured at the Ba ttle of Saratoga and spent a long captivity which eventually found him ne ar Charlottesville, VA. At this point he ceased to be a prisoner-of-war a nd became a Continental soldier, simultaneously marrying his first wife, C hristina Long (Lung). The Champaign county History turns out to be right t hat Friedrich Bode's father was also a soldier, but it appears he was se nt home before the British/Hessian forces invaded the Lake Champlain ar ea because of age and ill health. As it turned out, the son wasn't in t he war much longer either, being captured at Saratoga. The Schwalm peop le really resisted this story of father and son serving together, sayi ng it is unique and unlikely, but Ron Brelsford has produced the eviden ce that says it is so. In any case, the county history picked up a fami ly rumor which, in fact, did turn out to be true, as so few are. I can ha ve the essay xeroxed if you wish, but I'm not sure that it where the me at of the genealogical proof is (I'd have to look, since all this was wo rk done 10 years ago). Of course the evidence can be assaulted, I'm sur e. I remember Ron struggling because the researcher was dealing with terri bly difficult records in poor condition and so on. But in answer to your q uestion, yes,I am saying we feel our view of what these origins are shou ld be favored over alternative statements. (Friedrich Bode. Born in May 17 47 in Groß-Rüden, Braunschweig. Friedrich died in Rockingham Co., V A, in 1818; he was 70. Occupation: farmer. Religion: Lutheran.) -Lew E. magicpool@earthlink.net

[NI8572] A CENTENNIAL BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY OF CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, OHIO pg19-22
Benjamin Kizer, the father of him whose name introduces this review, was Born on the old Kizer homestead near Millerstown, Champaign county, in 1813, and was there early inured to the labors of field and meadow. He was a very studious youth, and largely through his own efforts succeeded in fitting himself for the teacher's profession, proving himself an able instructor along the lines of mental advancement. On the 21st of November, 1844. he was united in marriage to Mary, a daughter of Isaac and Catherine ( Wiant ) Pence, and three children were born of that union.- " Isaiah P., Sarah C. who married Samuel McMorran, and Ira, deceased. The wife and mother was called to the home beyond on the 2d of December, 1853. and on the 4th of February, 1855, the father married Matilda Guss, by whom he had three children. - Frank. Charles O. and Elmer Grant, but the eldest is now deceased. For twenty-one years Mr. Kizer served as a justice of the peace in Johnson township, and also held many other township offices. He was a practical and successful farmer, and at his death left to his family about three
hundred acres of land. Up to the time of the Civil war he gave his political support to the Democracy, but from that time until his death voted for the men and measures of the Republican party. He was a man of deep religious convictions, and from early life a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, having been active in the organization of that denomination in Saint Paris and also in the erection of its house of worship. He filled every office within the gift of that church with the exception of Sunday-school superintendent, and in its faith he passed
away on the 6th of December, 1884, but is still survived by his widow.

The re is a marriage of an Anna johnson to Aaron Berry 3/4/1830 in Champaign C o, OH. The 1850 census indicates she was age 34 born c1815. If daughter M artha Ann was born 1823, she could not have been the daughter under a ge 5 in the 1830 census unless put in the wrong age group. But the 1850 ce nsus indicates there is a connection to the Johnson family, as the re is a Minerva johnson living with Aaron and Anne Berry, age 22. Miner va would fit the age bracket in the 1830 census under age 5. This would i ndicate that the parentage of Martha Ann Johnson born 1823 is in question

The land had been reserved for Revolution ary soldiers, however, and Baker was foiled in his attempt to settle ther e. The farm now owned by his son, Simon, was entered December 24, 1816. Pe ter settled on the land now owned by Joseph Rhodes. When they came to the ir future home, the land was found to consist of one dense forest of gre en beech-trees. Simon erected a cabin on his tract, and covered it wi th a shingle roof-the first in the settlement. Peter died at the age of ni nety-four. His son, Simon, is still occupying the old farm. His fellow-cit izens have elected him repeatedly to all the township offices, except Just ice of the Peace. He erected the brick building which he now occupie s, in 1835

Joseph Pence, the youngest son of the late Geo. W. Pence, of this township, met with an accident while loading cattle in Urbana, a few days since, by being kicked on the knee by one of the cattle, dislocating the cap and fracturing the bone above the knee. John Pence, an elder brother of the above, a resident of Dayton, Ohio, was seriously if not fatally injured, some days since, by the explosion of an oil lamp in his face. The lamp was thrown at him by an insane man, striking him square in the face, with the above result.

Early in the week we were called by telegram as a witness in the case if the State of Ohio vs. John W. Pence in the Common Pleas Court of Montgomery county. The charge against the defendant is that of counterfeiting, and we must confess our sorrow at the conviction of a former fellow-citizen, once stood above reproach. Concord items, Feb 6, 1879

[HI8707] (Research):1860 Census names him as William PEARCE From Richard Pence 11/30/2004-Pat Stickey double-checked the marriage reco rds in Champaign County. The marriage record is clear that William PENCE married Rebecca Fulmer (th is is the couple you found under William PEARCE in Logan County in 1860) a nd the record for Isaac and Charity gives his name as Isaac Mc. Pence.

Champ Co Guardianship & Indentures Vol 1 pg 355 5 April 1848 Isaac Penc e, gdn of Rebecca pence 9 yr (12 Apr 1848); William Pence 10yr (23 Feb 184 8), Didama Flowers, minor heirs of john Flowers dec'd. Surities Isaac Amm on Wesley Pence

St Paris Dispatch June 12, 1890 William Pence, and industrious and temperate man, who lived southwest of t own, committed suicide, Sunday afternoon, by cutting his throat with a rus ty pocket knife on Sunday. He had ate a very hearty dinner and drank fo ur or five cups of coffee. He rose first from the table and started for t he outhouse. As he passed through the sitting room he grabbed an old pock et knife, off the mantle. He got to the outhouse and cut his throat from e ar to ear. He was about 53 years old. He was a member of the 45th OVI a nd a half brother to Elisha and Peter Berry, and formerly lived in Millers town. His funeral occured Wednesday.

From Richard Pence 11/2/2004 I went back through all the "stuff" regarding William Pence, and now ha ve reached the firm conclusion that William Pence, son of Isaac Pence a nd his first wife, Susannah Flowers, was the one who married (1) Rebecca Fulmer in 1859 in Champaign County and (2) Susannah Humb le in 1867 in Shelby County.

What had me confused was the 1870 census which showed William and Sus an in Sidney with these two children: Edward, age (apparently) 11, and Tho mas, age 2. And then in Logan County, there was Edward Fulmer (he is call ed Fulman in this record), Rebecca's father, with two grandchildren in h is family: Isaac M. Pence, age 8, and William G. Pence, age 6.

These latter two are obviously the children of Rebecca, who died in 1864,b ut what caused me a problem was the Edward "age 11" in William's househo ld in Shelby County in 1870. When I found Edward in 1900, it said he was b orn in August of 1861. It finally dawned on me that Rebecca had THREE chil dren, not TWO.

The oldest was Edward, most likely born in August of 1960 (not 1859 or1861 ), shortly after the 1860 census was taken and named for his mother's fath er; Isaac M., born in 1861 and named for his father's father and William G ., born in 1863. When you think about it, it would not be unusual for the oldest boy to be living with his father and stepmother and the two you nger boys living with their grandparents.

If I could just find some of these people in the 1880 census I think I cou ld nail this down even more solidly.

Some supporting data: William committed suicide in 1890 and although the w riteup in the St. Paris paper did not give the names of any of his fami ly members, it did say that he was a half-brother to Elisha Berry. The 18 50 census of Johnson Township shows the family of Isaac Pence and his seco nd wife, Mary (Jones) Berry. Elisha Berry and William Pence are in the famil y, but instead of being half-brothers they are obviously stepbrothers. An d, helping to cement that it was this William who first married Rebecca Fu lmer, she is with her father's family and listed only two pages before t he Isaac Pence family. Edward Fulmer was a brick mason and was in Johns on County in 1850 and in 1860 and 1870 he was in Pleasant Township, Log an County. In 1860, two households before that of Edward and just before t hat of his oldest son Simon is liste WILLIAM PEARCE, age 23, brickmaker, w ith wife Rebecca, age 20. This is obviously (at least I think it is) Will iam, son of Isaac Pence, and his wife Rebecca Fulmer. William apparently m oved with his father-in-law and was no doubt working with him in the brick -laying business. In 1870, William is a carpenter.

I can't find William, his wife Susan, or his sons Edward, Thomas and Isa ac in 1880, but I think I have found the son William G. as GRANT PENSE, a ge 16, an apprentice brick layer with his uncle (relationship not report ed in census) Thomas J. Fulmer in DeGraff, Logan County

EARLY SETTLERS of Champaign County and Surrounding Areas Vol 1 by Pat Stic kley and June Kiser. CCGS Feb 2000 , P O Box 682 Urbana, Ogio, 43078. pg 75 "Terre Haute Neighborhood"So many of our present day acquaintances a re descended from Terre Haute pioneers. In 1829 David Miller with a gro up of Virginia families, John Good, Abram Zerkle and Soloman Shaffer ca me in a four horse conestoga wagon and all settled near Terre Haute. Solom an Shaffer had 100 acres within a half mile of T erre Haute just southwe st of town. Abram Zerkle' s 110 acres adjoined Shaffer on the west. John G ood had a quarter section just east of town which later became part of t he town. There are two other Zerkles, George and Jacob, who according to d eed records owned farms in the immediate neighborhood and at the same tim e. I am at a loss to tell whether all were brothers or father and sons. Ab raham Zerkle sold one-fourth acre in 1847 for a site of the Lutheran churc h. There is a Zerkle cemetery on the Abram Zerkle farm and a Shaffer cemet ery on the Soloman Shaffer land. Another called the Rouze cemetery adjoi ns the southwest part of town. This land was owned by John, Levi and Jam es Rouze, all ofit in section 25 just west of town.

We have received e-mail from Edward Barnes, (5 Jul 1998), a descenda nt of the Dutch Keyser / Kiser line, not at this time affilliated with o ur line. He says: "I do have a reference to Charles Keyser who marri ed a Miss Shelly. My information is that she was the daughter of a Dr. Sh elly of Philadelphia. "The information says that after they married, they moved to Page Count y, Virginia. I don’t have specific dates, except that I show that Charl es was the son of Johannes Keyser (who was born July 25, 1721 in German-to wn) and Barbara (Funk) Keyser. I don’t have a birth or marriage date f or Charles. "HOWEVER -- although the family line from Johannes (showing Charles a nd __ Shelly) is documented in the 1889 Keyser Family History, more rece nt research by William Hires of Penn Valley, PA, casts considerable dou bt on the whole line beginning with Johannes’ children. As I recall, the re were two different lines that some folks claim descended from Johanne s. He says that the 1889 history is incorrect based on data that he has f ound in Pennsylvania. He was, by the way, the official genealogist for t he most recent Keyser Family Reunion (300th anniversary) in Philadelph ia in 1988." SO, IN SUMMATION, we do seem to have enough information to determine th at the Charles Keyser who married a Miss Shelly is NOT in our line. That C harles father, Johannes, was born 1721. Our Charles was born in 1702.

Several books have been written on "Kisers", "HURSTS IN SHENANDOAH COUN TY VIRGINIA", author Mrs. June Hurst Childers, 949 Mason Headley, Lexingto n, KY 40504, phone (606)252-6271, cost $50 in 1998; "FORERUNNERS" by STRI CKLER; "MEAD RELATIONS" by A. M. PRICHARD, published by The McClure Co., P rinters, Staunton, Virginia in 1933; KISER FAMILY DESCENDANTS by CHARL ES S. KISER. The most information was provided by E. J. SUTHERLAND, Jud ge in Dickenson County, VA, in his book "SOME DESCENDANTS OF JOHN COUN TS OF GLADE HOLLOW (Southwest Virginia) 1722-1977". (E. J. was a great-gre at-grandson of ABEDNEGO KISER). He states in his book: "Charles Keyser purchased a tract, 198 acres, from Lewis and Mathias Rine hart of Frederick County, Vir-ginia, near the mouth of Hawksbill in Freder ick County, VA by deed dated 6 Apr 1765 where he lived until his death (Ch arles Keyser, Jr., Shenandoah County Deed Book 1-265 where they conveyed u nto Andrew Keyser a parcel of 57 acres of land, etc.). On 28 May 1778, t he Shenandoah County Court appointed Bryant Breeding, Martin Comer, Matth ew Mattocks, and Peter Ruffner to appraise the estate of 'Charles Kizer, D ec'd,' and Charles Kizer was granted administration of this estate, and po sted a bond of 1,000 pounds (Kizer and Comer signed the bond in German) (S henandoah County Will Book A-179). On 28 August 1778, Martin Comer, Matth ew Mat-tocks and Peter Ruffner returned the appraisement to the court, lar ge inventory, his estate being valued at 509 pounds 15 shilling 0 penc e. Attached to this appraisement is the statement: 'There is Ten Childre n, 50 pounds 19 shillings 6 pence Each share'." "The old Keyser house, built of logs, still stands (1923) slightly abo ve a point opposite the mouth of the Hawksbill, near the mansion hou se on the old Keyser farm, now owned by Raymond Strickler, son of McKend ra Strickler. The old house is used for an out-house. Someone told Har ry M. Strickler, author of Forerunners, there was a large staple driven in to one of the logs on the inside to which two prisoners were chained unt il they could be conveyed to Woodstock. This was before Page County was f ormed. Here Charles Keyser lived, according to Adam Strickler (son of And rew Keyser's second wife), and I understand that Major Andrew Keyser, of R evolu-tionary fame, lived here, as well as his son, Col. Andrew Keyse r, of the Civil War. Charles Keyser, brother of Col. Keyser, lived sever al hundred yards south of the Major's home. The old graveyard is sou th of the latter home and about midway between the two. See Forerunne rs pg 121." >From "A Short History of Page County, Virginia" by Harry M. Strickler, p age 61: "In each bend of the river (Shenandoah River) on this original Ma ssanutten patent is at least one combination fort and dwelling. Be-ginni ng on the west side of the river opposite the mouth of the Hawksbill whe re Raymond Strickler now (1952) lives; here we may visit an old log hou se once the home of Major Andrew Keyser, of the Revolution, and just a sho rt distance farther up the river is the old home of Charles Keyser, now oc cupied by the venerable David A. Kibler (etc.). Proceeding farther up t he river we come to Fort Rhodes where John Rhodes and members of his fami ly were killed by the Indians. (See Andrew Keyser, Jr's wife - Ann Rhodes ). This is a log house built over a fortified cellar from which flows a s pring. In the next bend is Fort Egypt. In the next bend is Fort Massanut ten, and in upper Massanutten is an old Long home built of stone whi ch we will call Fort Paul Long to distinguish it from Fort Long on the rig htbank of the river. (Charles Keyser's son Joseph's son John married a Lo ng). Cross-ing the river to the right bank we first come to Fort Long whe re the pioneers Paul and Philip Long located, now (1952) owned by Charl es D. Price. "All these old homesteads or forts have fortified cellars and are bui lt in much the same manner, constructed of stone with arched ceilings. So me have an outer cellar also strongly constructed through which one must p ass before entering the vault. Several of them have running water. The se old homes are all built on the Massanutten patent and a number of th em are still occupied as dwellings. They were all substantially built a nd together form the most interesting group of old homes in Northern Virgi nia, and in fact, in all Virginia. These homes were built, probably fr om 1750 to 1790." The first settlement in the Shenandoah Valley was made at Massanutt en in 1726 or 1727 in Page County long before Page County was establishe d. The Massanutten patent extended for ten miles up and down both sid es of the river from the mouth of the Hawksbill to the mouth of Stony Ru n, near Alma, the White House Bridge and the pioneer monument (erect ed in 1929) being near the center of the patent. Canada's Peak in the Mas sanutten Mountains marks the northern limits. The Massanutten settlers had land troubles. Lord Fairfax (Scotchman) h ad a grant of all the land between the Potomac and Rappahannock rivers t he western line to be run from the head waters of the Potomac to the he ad waters of the Rappahannock. This line was supposed to begin at the he ad waters of the present Rappahannock River opposite Front Royal, crossi ng the valley in the neighborhood of Toms Brook. But Fairfax claimed t he head waters to be at the head of the south branch, Rapidan. This wou ld require the line to run twenty-five or more miles further south. If t he northern line were accepted, then the Massanutten settlers would find t heir title good as their grant was from King George II, while if the south ern line were established, as it finally was, they would find themselves l iving on the domain of Lord Fairfax from whom they had no grant. So the se settlers had to obtain two deeds, one from King George II, and one fr om the legal owner, Lord Fairfax. The French and Indian War (1754-1763) changed the way of life for the ear ly Shenandoah Valley settlers. Until this time the settlers in the Massan utten (Shenandoah) Valley had lived in peace with the Indians. Many evide ntly had lived in close proximity with the whites. At the beginning of th is war, western Indians induced the Valley tribes to join them in this wa r, so that in the Spring of 1754 the Indians suddenly and unexpectedly mov ed off, and entirely left the Valley. As a result of their strife many se ttlers in the Shenandoah Valley went east of the Ridge, others to Pennsylv ania, but many remained and prepared forts. For ten years or more the fro ntier set-tlements were harassed by Indians often led by French officer s. Bounties were offered for scalps. It was ten years of bloodshed, mass acre, of plunder, violence and burning all along the frontier. There we re two massacres on the Massanutten Patent: The Stone family in 1758 a nd the Roads Massacre in 1764. The Roads (Rhodes) had 13 children, 6were m assacred. Of the seven who survived, Joseph Roads married Mary Strickl er and one of their grandchildren, Ann Roads, b. 1790, married in 18 08 to Noah Keyser, born 1786. Noah Keyser was the son of Major Andrew Key ser who served in the American Revolution in the Virginia Troup. See Andr ew Keyser, Indi-vidual 6. Shenandoah County was organized on March 24, 1772, and called Dunmo re in honor of John Murray, Earl of Dunmore, Governor-in-Chief, 1771-177 6, who was a popular Governor until the approach of the Revolution, wh en he not only remained loyal to the King, but committed under-handed ac ts to cripple the Colony in the on-coming storm. He appeased the India ns in Dunmore's War, seized the gun powder at Williamsburg, aroused the sl aves against their masters, and finally burned Norfolk before fleeing aboa rd ship. The people of Shenandoah County registered their indignati on by changing the name of their county to Shenandoah. The new county of Page was established by an Act of the General Assemb ly March 30, 1831, named for John Page, member of the first U. S. Congre ss in which position he continued until 1797 and Governor of Vir-ginia, fr om 1802 to 1805, and Lieutenant Governor during the Revolution. The coun ty seat was soon thereafter fixed at Luray which had been formed by an A ct August 21, 1812, in Shenandoah County. Most of Page County was taken f rom Shenandoah County. It lies wholly between the Massanutten Mounta in on the west and the Blue Ridge on the east. Page County, while one of the younger counties, has the distinction of ha ving within its borders a spot whereon the first settlement west of the Bl ue Ridge in Virginia was made. This settlement was made at Mas-sanutte n, an Indian Village, surrounded by Indian Old Fields, on the Shenandoah R iver, in 1726 or 1727, six miles west of Luray, by settlers from William P enn's Colony. A pioneer monument was erected by the Mas-sanutten Socie ty in 1927 in honor of these settlers on the hill at the famous White Hou se Bridge. Extract from a letter dated 5 February 1988 from Vivian Bales: "Long a go in the Pennsylvania archives I found the Keysers whom I descend fro m, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (which also you descend from). I re ad the deposition ANDREW made about an Indian who came to their house a nd asked for food, etc., and about JOSEPH being accused of stealing a shee p. The Keyser - Kiser's were German Deutsche. My grandmother told me thi s. They clung to their language right down to my grandmother." Kercheval's "History of the Valley", 4th Ed., page 37, relates an incide nt in relation to which "Major An-drew Keyser also informed the author th at an Indian once called at his father's in Lancaster County, Pennsylva-ni a, appeared to be much agitated, and asked for something to eat. After re freshing himself he was asked what disturbed him. He replied, 'The Southe rn Indians have killed my whole nation.'" (per A.M. Pritchard in his Me ad Relations "This indicates clearly that Charles Keyser lived in Lancast er County, Pennsylvania, before he settled in what is now Page County, Vir ginia.") E. J. Sutherland says in his Some Descendants of John Counts of Glade Hol low, that Charles had an old German Bible, which went to his son Charles u pon his death. When his son, Charles, Jr. died his sons took the bible wi th them when they moved to Ohio. In Esther Kiser's Sandy Ridge Kiser-Powers Kin, she states: "It is belie ved that Charles had two brothers who also came to America. Jacob Keys er arrived in Philadelphia on 16 September 1751 aboard the Edinburgh fr om Rotterdam, Holland. Andreas Keyser arrived in Philadelphia on 29 Septem ber 1753 aboard the British ship Brothers.

[NI8998] A CENTENNIAL BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY OF CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, OHIO pg19-22
Isaiah P. Kizer, a member of the firm of Kizer & Long, prominent lumber dealers of Saint Paris, is a member of a prominent old pioneer family of Champaign county. His paternal grandfather. Joseph Kizer, was horn in Shenandoah county, Virginia, and was there married to Catherine Comer, a daughter of David Comer also of the Old Dominion. Two children were born to them in that commonwealth, Peter and Daniel, and afterward the family started with teams and
vigins for the Buckeye state, arriving about 1811 and on the journey they were accompanied by the Comer family. They took up their abode in the locality near Millerstown, where a few Virginia families had previously settled, and there Mr. Kizer entered a tract of heaivily timbered government land, on which he erected a cabin and began life in true pioneer style. Five children were added to the family circle in this state. -" Benjamin. Philip. Charles. Martin and Polly. The daughter became the wife of Jacob Rhoades, but the children are now all deceased.
Isaiah P. Kizer, of this review, supplemented the knowledge gained in the common schools by a year's course in the Wittenberg College, of Springfield, Ohio. On the 2d of May, 1864, while serving as a member of the Ohio National Guard, Governor Brough called for troops to serve one hundred days and his command was organized into the government service, becoming the One Hundred and Thirty- fourth Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and Mr. Kizer became z. member of Company I. With his regiment Mr. Kizer was on duty principally ini Virginia, in the vicinity of Richmond and Petersburg, and. on the expiration of his term of enlistment received an honorable discharge and returned to his home. On again taking up the duties of civil life he resumed the teacher's profession, which he followed until his marriage. On the 27th of February. 1868, he came to Saint Paris, where he embarked in the lumber business with H. H. Long, which relationship has continued through thirty-four years. For twenty years Mr. Kizer has also been a director in the First National Bank of Saint Paris. Few men have become more prominent or widely known in this enterprising little city than he. In business circles he has long been an important factor and his popularity is well deserved, for in him are embraced the characteristics of an unbending integrity, unabating energy and industry that has never flagged.
On the 14th of November, 1867, he was united in marriage to Asenath Carey, a daughter of Isaac and Rosana Carey, and six children have blessed the union, namely: Alta, now Mrs. J. E. Kite; Elma, wife of W. L. Hunt: Delia, at home; and Mary, Benjamin and Grace,
who have passed away. Since their early youth Mr. and Mrs. Kizer have been members of the Methodist Episcopal church, in which he has filled all of the offices and for ten years was superintendent of the Sunday school. He has ever been loyal to the duties of citizenship and has given an unwavering support to the principles of the Republican party, while for nine years he served as a member of the school board and for a time was the efficient city clerk. Socially he is a member of Pharos Lodge. No. 355, F. & A. M., and of H. C. Scott Post, No 111. G. A. R.

HISTORY OF CHAMPAIGN COUNTY. - 585 GOSHEN TOWNSHIP. The first house built for a preaching place, was built in Mechanicsbu rg in 1814. About the year 1825, a camp meeting was held a little nor th of what is now the race track at the fair-grounds, and a little ba ck of the David Rutan dwelling.

East of Mechanicsburg three or four miles, were men who heard the sto ry of the poor black with compassion. Among these were Orin Mann, a very z ealous helper, Levi Patrick and "Dad " Collins, who are dead, and Newman M itchell, who died many years ago, P. W. Alden and Coung Patrick, who are s till living. At Mechanicsburg, there were Azro L. Mann and David Rutan, w ho are dead, and J. R. Ware, Charles Taylor and Levi Rathburn, who are liv ing. We do ' not pretend to give all who sympathized with the slave, or w ho occasionally befriended him ; we give only the most known and acti ve of his friends.

Obit names a son William living in Bellefontaine . Marshals came to Urbana again, for the purpose of going to Mechanicsbu rg to make arrests of citizens for resisting officers. They arrested Char les Taylor, Russel Hyde, Edward Taylor and Hiram Guthridge. During this ti me the excitement ran high, and James Gill was chased into Williams & Bros .' store by William Culbertson, for having, as the people believed, act ed as informer on the citizens. When the Marshals had the prisone rs in a wagon waiting to start away, William C. Pangborn stepped up to the m, and said, "You needn't go unless you want to. Just say the word a nd we will let you go free." One of the Marshals, on hearing this, said, " By God, that's talk !" However, the prisoners replied that the officers h ad agreed that if they would go peaceably they would take them to Urban a, where they could get a writ of habeas corpus. When the Marshals reach ed Clark's Hill, about half way to Urbana, with the prisoners, they turn ed off south, thus breaking their agreement. David Rutan and Oliver Colwe ll followed them up, and, when the officers turned off, they also turne d. Then the officers threatened to shoot Rutan and Colwell, and, seizing t heir horse, turned it round, and drove them back

Soon after the war broke out, and men left their families to go into the a rmy, and when the necessity of some organization was seen, a war committ ee was appointed by the citizens, to look after families needing help. Th is committee was rather the head of the work, to whom many subscriptio ns of supplies and money were reported,The committee were John W. Runya n, David Rutan and James L. Magruder, the two first now dead

In the spring of 184 1, he purchased the harness shop of Rutan, and has since continued the bus iness in the same room, a period of nearly forty years.

Champaign County Ohio History 1991 by CCGS pg279 The Rutan family reached Champaign County shortly after 1800 where David R iddle Rutan was born Dec 21 1811, son of Daniel and Mary (Riddle) Rut an in what is now Goshen Twp. Little is known of his early childhood unt il the late 1820's when he met the woman he would marry. Magdaline Balding er, in Clark County. They married Mar 29, 1831 at Warden's Hotel in Spring field and in 1836 he took her to live in Mechanicsburg. Homes at that ti me were little more than log cabins, which David and Magdeline most like ly n~oved into on Main Street. Their first two children. Hannah (1 838) a nd Mary (1 840). were born there. In the 1830s, the little viLlage had abo ut 100 inhabitants, had just been incorporated in 1834. and was little more than a scattering of businesses and crude log ho mes. On June 18,1841 David purchased 200 acres of land for $3500. or little ov er $17 per acre, located one mile north of Mechanicsburg on the Urbana Roa d. There they built their farm and had four more children: Lyde (1844). Lu cy (1845), Sarah (1848) and Abigale (1849). Only Han. Mary and Lyde liv ed to maturity. David and Magdeline lived out their lives at this farm. Da vids wife. raised in a Quaker environment. had great influence over his mo ral convictions. Quakers were staunch abolitionists since 1751, when all Q uakers gave up slavery. David became an early member of the Abolition Part y. organized in Mechanicsburg in the 1 830s and worked in its behalf we ll into the Civil War period. At great risk to themselves and their famili es, David and a number of other local inhabitants assisted as a way stati on in the underground railroad, the moving of black fugitives to safe hav en in Canada. In 1857. David figured in the Addison White rescue episod e. when U.S. marshals attempted to return to the South with locals that re fused to give up the famed Addison White. David and Oliver Colwell track ed the marshals on horseback and eventually overtook them. At gunpoint t he two were turned back with marshals threatening death to the prisone rs if approached again. In the 1850's. David was actively involved in t he school system as a school director in Goshen Township. He was 5O at t he onset of the Civil War, too old to join the military. In the summ er of 1870, David contracted typhoid fever and on September 29 died at h is country home. He is buried with his wife at Maple Grove Cemetery. Porti ons of the family farm were then split among Davids daughters’ families t he Jesse Moores acquiring 120 acres and the Lafayette Newmans, 35 acres. T he beginnings of this line of Rutans in this country are traced from the h istory of the HuguenOt emigration to America in the 1500/ 1600s. Abraham R utan left his native France and, traveling by way of Mannheim to Hollan d. landed in Boston about 1673. He traveled to New Paitz, New YorK pledg ed his allegiance to the crown of England in 1682 before relocatingwith h is wife Marie and family to Bergen County New Jersey between 1695-1699. He spent his early years in Berkeley Co. VA then, after t he Revolution, he applied for 400 acres of land in Providence Twp., Bedfo rd Co. PA. The wheels of government moved slowly even then, for records sh ow that Uriah was on a 1784 tax list for Bedford Co., but he owned no lan d. He finally received his warrant in 1786 and the land was surveyed in th at year. In 1788, Uriah sold this land to James McKinney for £40. By Oct 1 789, Uriah was in Nelson Co. KY where he signed a petition and in 179 5, in the same county, he signed the marriage bond of his daughter, Elizab eth. Uriah moved to Dutch Station, Staunton Twp., Miami Co. OH, in 179 9. In 1802 he received a patent for 120 acres of land in Staunton Twp., Se ct. 18, Twp. 1, Range 10. At the same time he was given a patent for 40 ac res in the adjacent section to the north, Sect. 13, Twp. 1, Range 11. The re is no subsequent record of Uriah or his heirs ever owning the latter pi ece of land, so it is probable that Uriah never completed its acquisitio n. They probably lived on Sect. 18 for the rest of their lives. They di ed in Miami Co. OH and are buried on the Blue farm in Staunton Twp, now ca lled Saunders Cemetery. REGARDING THE TWO MICHAEL NEESES

In the Zirkle Family Historical Association Newsletter, v. 6, #3, Novembe r, 1988, page 14, in an article by John V. Beck, "Maria Margaret (Zirkl e) Nehs," the following is stated: "Adam's will named their children (Joh n, Michael, and Dorothy "Dolly") but Mr. HARPINE [Rev. Jacob William Harpi ne] appears to have traced the wrong Michael in his genealogical publicati ons. The Michael NEHS who married in 1817 Elizabeth ZIRKLE was the s on of George and Betty NEHS. Adam's son Michael, m. 13 Dec 1819 (da te of bond with George MOWERY as bondsman) Rebecca PENCE, and they are bur ied in the Terre Haute Cemetery, Champaign County, Ohio. . . "

In December of l992, before having seen the preceding, I had written a me mo to Blair Zirkle, of ZFHA, and also a Neese/Nehs descendant, regardi ng my theory as to the parents of my 3d GGF, Michael NEESE (Nehs) who mar ried, in 1819, Rebecca PENCE.

MEMO FROM:Richard A. Connell REGARDING:Ancestry of MICHAEL NEESE (1793-1873) and REBECCA PENCE (1802-1 873).

I have a problem with J. William Harpine on page 393 of Philip and Catheri ne Harpine and Their Descendants, 1952, and his Zirkle Family History, 196 2, p. 115. In both instances, he lists MICHAEL NEESE mar. to ELIZABETH ZI RKLE. I think this may be an ERROR!

I think MICHAEL NEESE, son of ADAM and ELIZABETH (HARPINE) NEESE, marri ed to REBECCA PENCE on 13 Dec 1819. WHY? Because Michael's mother, Eliza beth (Harpine) Nehs married GEORGE MOURA (sic. Mowery or Mowrer), after h er first husband, ADAM NEAS, died ca. 1799-1800. Ref: p. 370, P. & C. Har pine; p. 114: Zirkle Family; pp. 300 & 351, Shen. Co. Mar. Bonds, 1772-18 50, by Vogt & Kethly. On p. 161 of Shen. Co. Mar. Bonds is an entry: "NE ES, Michael and Rebecca Pence, 13 Dec 1819; b. Geo Mowery." Reasoning: W hat would be more natural than for Michael's stepfather, since the a ge of about 8, to be his bondsman for his marriage? If he was NOT the ste pfather of this Michael, then why in the world would he have been his bond sman?

Michael and Rebecca migrated between 1830 and 1840 to Terre Haute, Mad Riv er Twp., Champaign Co., Ohio (per U.S. Census). They are buried the re in Terre Haute Cemetery; I have seen and photographed the tombstones: -"Michael Neese - Died Mar. 19, 1875, Aged 80 Yr 11 Mo 19 Days." -"Rebecca, Wife of Michael Neese, Born Shenandoah Co., VA, Sep. 13, 180 2. Died July 30, 1873."
[Nb: Michael's D.O.B. = ca. Mar 29, 1794.] Conclusion: There were TWO Michaels, born close to the same time, since o ne, according to J. W. Harpine is buried at the Zirkle Cemetery, near Mano rs Mill, Shen. Co., with wife Elizabeth Zirkle, and another is buried in C hampaign Co., Oh., with wife Rebecca Pence. (I'll bet he didn't know abo ut the Ohio Michael Neese. But then, who are the unidentified paren ts of the "other Michael Neese? [Were they George and Betty Nehs?]).

Then I have yet another problem: I have yet to identify the parents of RE BECCA PENCE, born 13 Sep 1802, in Shen. Co., VA. I have, some time ago, c orresponded with Richard Pence, the author of the Pence Genealogies, of Fa irfax, VA, and he couldn't identify them either, though he did know of t he marriage bond record. She is undoubtedly of the same Shen. Co. Penc es but how does she fit in?

On the tombstone of Michael (3) Neese is inscribed, "Michael Neese - Di ed Mar. 19, 1875, Aged 80yr 11mo 19days." Using the date calculator th is translates into a birth date of 31 Mar 1794. I prefer to use this da te as all others found appear to be unsubstantiated.

There were TWO Michael Neeses in Shen Co. who were cousins and contemporar ies. One m. Elizabeth Zirkle; he was b. 4/23/1796 and d. 1852 in Shen. T his is evident from his TOMBSTONE, which I have personally seen near New M arket, VA. I believe that Rev. Jacob William Harpine, author and family h istorian of era 1950s- 65, got his info from this tombstone. The OTHER Mi chael Neese m. Rebecca Pence, 13 Dec 1819, and they died at Terre Haute, C ham. Co., OH, he on "19 Mar 1875, Aged 80 Yr 11 Mo 19 Days". [This from h is tombstone, which I have viewed in Terre Haute Cemetery. (These dates c alculate to 29 Mar 1794 for a birth date.) George Mowery (Moury, etc.) w as the second husband of Michael's (m. R. Pence) mother, Elizabeth (Harpin e) Nehs. My Michael Neese (b. 1794) likewise fits very nicely, date wis e, with his siblings, and with the dates of parents' marriage and father 's (Adam) death.

Harpine places them as, "Buried in the Zirkle cemetery two miles we st of New Market near Manors Mill."] [NOTES: Some extraneous material omitted as " ... "; some added commen ts as [ in italics ]; and some abbreviations from the original.]

[ The whole key to the argument is where and how did Rev. Harpine get h is info on the Michael (b. 1796)? I believe it came solely from the tombs tone in the Zirkle cemetery. His work indicates that all did NOT come fr om original records; indeed, some of such records do not now exist! Whe re did I get my data? From printed sources, mostly, but backed up where p ossible by personal observation (trips to Forestville and Terre Haut) a nd viewing what records I could find or by reference to records others ha ve discovered and recorded. Also note that Rev. Harpine MISSED the lengt hy obituary in the Solomon's Church Register! It is quoted below for yo ur information and is a significant document in itself. Since Rev. H. did n't know the date of Adam Neese' death, it is presumed that he didn't s ee this Register entry on Page 1!]]
My conclusion was that Rev. Harpine was unaware of Michael Neese and Reb ecca, his wife, who lived in Cham. Co., OH, died and are buried there. T he marriage bond is the key for my conclusion: Why in the world would Geo rge Mowrer be a bondsman for a cousin of his stepson who happened to ha ve the same name, Michael (which was undoubtedly given each in honor of th eir grandfather)? That makes NO sense at all. On the other hand, what wo uld be more natural, even expected, than for a loving stepfather to be bon dsman for his stepson?

[NI9105] CCGS Newsletter Dec 2004 pg 117 Urbana Daily Citizen 3/20/1879 News From Concord, Woodstock, Terre Haute, Powhattan and Cable, OH We have heard of ghosts and spirit rapping's and strange noises, but the f ol-lowing throws all of them in the shade: On Tuesday evening last Mos es F. Pence and wife were absent from home leaving the house alone. Alt er their return home, about ten o'clock at night, Moses retired to bed, a nd his wife was sitting quietly by the fire reading the Citizen, her daugh ter by her side. A strange noise was heard resem-bling the sound of a dist ant church bell. But what could a bell be ringing for so near the ho ur of midnight? But instead of a distant bell it proved to be the pia no at work in the further part of the house. Who could be the person opera ting the piano? The wife and daughter became alarmingly frightened. Cou ld it be the gallant of the daughter who had just left for home, or cou ld some one have entered the house during the absence of the family and w as playing a joke? Or could the tither, whom they had reason to believe w as sound asleep, have become suddenly insane? And many other things presen ted themselves to solve the mystery, but all to no purpose, and yet the pi ano kept banging away all this time, getting louder and louder.

The bedroom of the husband was reached by the back way and he quietly awo ke and informed of the strange work-ings of the piano. He dressed himse lf hast-ily and with trembling limbs, armed him-self with the tongs, and w ith less meekness than characterized the ancient Moses, ac-companied his w ife, who, in addition to the light she carried, was armed with & broom a nd the daughter following in battle array with a stove stick and smoothi ng iron; they cautiously, with noiseless tread, ap-proached the parlor doo r, with the pulse beating about one hundred and eighty and the piano sti ll at work. The door was gen-tly pushed ajar, only to find a large Tom c at treading the keys of the piano. But Mr.Cat's lesson came sudden ly to an end and this mystery was solved.
