[HI6138] (Research):Submitted to WFT Vol 37 Tree 691 from Devon Taylor, P O Box 18, BD0798, Ma ryville, NY 14757-0018 I found out that I DID write to Devon Taylor. He responded to me on 5/28/9 8. Mr. Taylor is a descendant of another family that married into min e. In his letter he describes information he found on the mother of Haz el (Barton) Evelsizer. He states, "You might also be interested in knowi ng that Lotta Ann had a memorial stone in Westfield, NY where several Parm ent and Parment relatives are buried. It somehow ended up in a creek bed b ehind a church over there along with a number of other stones." Michael Davis dadmunk@pacbell.net

Hazel Barton was the 1st or 2nd wife of W.D. Fard, the founder of the Nati on of Islam. I do have more information--this email is written off the fl y--former addresses, the male Evelsizer's first name, etc--but I'm current ly sorting through Fard's 816-page FBI file which is pretty haphazard read ing so it might take a few days. Michael Knight mikail316@yahoo.com

W.D. Fard's FBI file is available online

http://foia.fbi.gov/fard.htm

It's a huge document--but if you click on "part 2," Hazel's name com es up quite a bit. She was first mentioned as "Hazel Osborn" on page 6, w hich also stated that she and Fard married, but it's later mentioned th at she never married Fard. On page 10 it mentions her as Hazel Barton and that she married Clifford Evelsizer. She had her son's name changed fr om Wallace Dodd Ford to Wallace Max Ford in 1940, when he would have be en 20 years old. Wallace Max Ford served in the U.S. Coast Guard during W WII and was killed at Linhaven Roads, Virginia, 8/3/42.

Hazel Evelsizer comes up in the name index of a book on the assassinati on of Malcolm X, called The Judas Factor, by K. Evanzz, I'm guessing as pa rt of Fard's background info.

Beer's History:Pg 723 Adam Pence retired farmer, P O Westville. Among t he many pioneers of this county we find Adam Pence living in an old time c ottage under the beautiful hills that overlook the Mad River Valle y. He is one of our comfortable men, retired from active business, and wi th his wife, three sons and two daughters, lives a happy contented life, s urrounded by domestic comforts, and free from care. Adam was born in Shena ndoah Co, VA, probably in 1802; his parents Lewis and barbara pence immigr ated to Ohio in 1820; they are both of German descent, and Mrs Pence ca me from Germany. Their children (eleven in number) were born in Virgini a, the youngest being 21 years of age; four of them were married. Lewis h ad considerable money when he came here, and purchased a section of lan d, afterward buying 300 acres more; this he divided among his childr en at once; and they set to work and soon those who were married had a com fortable log house erected. Adam, our subject, is now living in the hou se first built, in 1821 and which has been occupied by his family for fift y-nine years. He was married to his present wife Mary Prince, a nati ve of Kentucky, in 1824; they were both hard workers, saved their money, a nd soon had gained enough to purchase 240 acres of land; this was in tu rn divided among their children, of whom they have nine, seven sons and t wo daughters. Three sons are married; Wesley married Emily Strickler; Ad am Jr wedded Nancy McCarty and William married Mary Miller. The two daught ers are named Sarah and Elizabeth. There are also three sons living at hom e-Henry, John and David. Adam Pence has also raised another man, who mig ht properly be reckoned a son named Charlie M Overhulse. The sons livi ng at home have lately added to their possessions 200 acres more land, pur chased in partnership, lying west of the home farm. Their father still ow ns his original tract of 100 acres given him by his father, with an inco me sufficient to furnish every comfort while they live. We have been to ma ny farmhouses, but the culinary skill of the mother and her daughters cann ot be excelled by any housewives in the county. Their habits are of a qui et sort, for which the pioneers are noted, and the family are members of t he Lutheran Church, to which Mr and Mrs pence have belonged for nearly thr ee quarters of a century. They are noted for their honesty, and as neighbo rs, enjoy the confidence of all with whom they are acquainted. This sket ch will ever be a source of pride to their descendents indicating the char acter of their ancestry, and the high esteem in which they are held in t he community. According to the 1874 atlas, the Adam Pence Sr. tract or farm was in the w est half of Sec. 27.

[HI6412] (Research):5 Uriah BLUE Jr. (1782-1849), m1.1808 Jane STITE (1789-1819), m2.1820 Marg aret (DEWEESE) GERARD (1797-1840), m3.1843 Charlotte CLARK (b.ca1805). Uri ah was probably born in Bedford Co. PA, however, the 1850 Ohio Mortality S chedule says he was born in VA. He was married to Jane in Hamilton C o. OH by Rev. William Jones, Minister of the Duck Creek Baptist Churc h. In 1807, Uriah received a patent for 160.76 acres located in Sect. 2 3, Twp. 1, Range 11, in present day Spring Creek Twp., Miami Co. OH, a nd in 1808 they moved to this land. The first organized township meeting w as held in 1815 and Uriah was elected as a trustee. In that year he record ed his earmark (for cattle) with the township, which was two slits in t he upper side of the right ear. He sold parts of his land in 1814 and 181 7, but kept some until he died. His estate sold the remainder in 1852. Ja ne was a daughter of Elijah and Rhoda STITES. She was buried on the Old Bl ue Farm (Saunders) Cemetery in Staunton Twp., Miami Co. Uriah married Marg aret DEWEESE in Miami Co. She was a daughter of Lewis and Mary DEWEESE a nd the widow of John GERARD. She had two daughters by John, Elizabeth C. ( GERARD) GARVEY (1816-1889) and Mary A. (GERARD) SMITH (1818-1889). Margar et died in Miami Co. and is also buried at the Old Blue Farm Cemetery. Uri ah then married Charlotte in Warren Co. OH. She was a daughter of John CLA RK of Warren Co. Charlotte was living with some of Uriah's children in Spr ing Creek Twp., Miami Co. in 1850. Uriah was a veteran of the War of 18 12 and is buried in the Old Blue Farm (Saunders) Cemetery near Troy OH, ne ar the grave of his father. The children of Uriah and his wives were obtai ned from a list, which appears to be a copy of a Bible record, writt en by Clarence G. BLUE, grandson of Uriah and Margaret. These children a re consistent with a series of probate and guardianship records filed in M iami Co. There is a 23 Apr 1841 record in Miami Co. OH wherein Uriah BL UE and William McCAMPBELL are appointed co-guardians for Uriah's childr en (after Margaret's death in 1840). This was probably required due to t he legacy received by the children from their grandparents, Lewis and Ma ry DeWEESE.

Politics, like almost everything else, works out strange events. The laying aside of Esq. Loudenback as Justice of Peace after having filled the office for thirty-six consecutive years is one of the events of the recent election. But it is said to be a long lane that has no turn, and while his turn has come at last, he retires with the consolation of having the credit of being the most accomplished Justice ever in Champaign county. Another event of the recent election is the fact that this township produced one entire Prohibition voter, and kind of sore-headed Democrat, and ten partial Prohibition votes. These ten all stepped down and out of the regular channel of Prohibition, where beer, ale and hard cider dare not come, and voted either for his favorite candidate for Probate Judge or Clerk, evincing a strong desire not to go the whole hog on Prohibition, for fear they might choke.

DAVID LOUDENBACK, real estate and loans; P. O. Westville. There is, perhap s, no man in Mad River Township so well known as Squire Loudenback. For ma ny years he has served the public, and now takes front rank among the pion eers of the township. His age is 72 years; he was born March 20, 180 8, in Page Co., Va., and came to this township, together with his parent s, David and Susannah Loudenback, Nov. 1, 1817. They were parents of eig ht children, five sons and three daughters-Benjamin, Ann, David, the subje ct of this biography, Rebecca, Emanuel, Barbara, John and Martin. They we re well known to all the older people living in the township, and it is pr esumed that they are all living. Squire David Loudenback was wedded to Mi ss Charlotte M. Hebbard, in 1838, by whom he had ten children, of whom Eug ene F. and Hylas D. are living. Those that are now deceased were named Noa h, Eliza, David H., Henrietta, Charles G., Lucy A. and Devilla O. Mrs. Lou denback died June 26, 1857. Her married life extended over a period of nin eteen years. Mr. Loudenback was again married to Mrs. Elizabeth A. Smith ( nee Custar), July 2'2, 1858. Three children were the result of this union- Rienzi, the eldest, was born May 10, 1859, and died May 7, 1863 ; Rolla, F eb. 2J, 1862, and Glendora, who was born at the same time, but died in inf ancy. The early life of Squire Loudenback was similar to that of all you ng men who have helped in the development of a new country, until Ju ne 1, 1829, when, from the advantages derived from close application to st udy, he commenced teaching school, and for fourteen consecutive terms taug ht in this and the adjoining district. He then formed an engagement as cle rk in a grocery store at Westville, which was continued for three years. D uring this time he began loaning money, which has been continued until th is time, the success of which has made him the wealthiest man in Champai gn county. He was also Deputy County Surveyor, and paid attention to the s elling and settling up of estates; for ten years be acted as Township Cler k; in 1842, he was elected Justice of the Peace, and his re-election was c ontinued for thirty-six years, and during this long term of office never h ad one of his decisions reversed. No man can show a better record than thi s. He has also been Township Treasurer for twenty-six years, which offi ce he still holds. He has settled more large estates, and is guardian of m ore children, than any man in the township. He is also the largest land-ow ner, having now 1,200 acres, all under cultivation. His present residen ce is a handsome frame house, near the village of Westville, and here M r. Loudenback passes his time when not engaged in business cares. Mu ch of the township history has been obtained from him. Squire Loudenback c ommenced teaching school June 1, 18'29, for $10.50 per month, and out of t his had to pay his board. At this time he was $6.25 in debt, which was pa id out of his first quarter's salary, and from this small beginning, has g rown, by energy and fair dealing, to the position of one of the most promi nent as well as the wealthiest man in the county. In addition to all his o ther business, he is connected with the Third National Bank of Urban a, of which he owns one-tenth interest. He has, since 1830, been an arde nt Universalist, and made a princely donation of between $5,000 and $6,00 0, for the purpose of building the church of that order in Westville. He a lso pays a yearly dividend of $300 toward the support of the ministr y. He takes a great pride in having been from boyhood a Jacksonian Democra t, casting his first vote for Andrew Jackson, and has helped elect every D emocratic President since that time. As a man of correct business babies a nd unswerving integrity, he is, without doubt, the equal of any man in t he State of Ohio. We are proud of his biographical sketch, and know it wi ll be read with interest by every supporter of this history, which wi ll be the authoritative one to this date and for all time to come.

"Whoever said, 'Dead men tell no tales,' has never vistied an old cemeter y. The Lippincott (Joseph 1853) and Maxson headstones, their faces freshe ned with chalk, documented the probable site of the Beech Woods SDB Chur ch at the corner of Ayers Pike and Anspaugh Road, three miles northwe st of North Hampton. Organized in 1824 by Elder Lewis A. Davis, its origi nal seven members soon expanded to 20. Subsequently called the Pike Towns hip Church, it reported to Seventh Day Baptist General Conference in 18 29 the following officers: Samuel F[itz] Randolph, Simeon Babcock [my g-g- g-g-greatfather William's older brother and father of Maxson Babcock], eld ers; Samuel Lippincott Sr. [brother-in-law of Simeon Babcock's first wife], deacon; Jo hn Davis, clerk; membership 33. The registry of deeds in Springfield revea ls a thriving community of Lippincots, Maxsons, Davises, and others, wheeling and dealing in land. This was truly the hub throu gh which SDBs fanned out into central Ohio, Iowa, Nebraska and Wisconsin. They grew to a membersh ip of 102 in 1832 and 150 in 1837. "In 1831, having outgrown the humble me eting place we surmised to have been known as Beech Woods, the Pike Chur ch moved to the center of North Hampton. The Clarke County registry of de eds shows that 'Obadiah Lippincott [Samuel Lippincott's son] and Margar et his wife. . .and the Seventh Day Baptist Close Communion Church: for a nd in consideration of the sum of of twelve and a half cents' entered in to an agreement to sell convey a parcel of land 'being one half an acr e. . .' The North Hampton Church had their moment in the sun. "Wherever t wo or three SDBs are gathered together, you get three or four divergent op inions. Church meetings must have been hot and furious before the pro-temperance group of 100 split off into the North Hampton Temperance Re form Church in 1837. (See The Sabbath Recorder, June 1987.) The old Pi ke Church retained possession of the building and records in North Hampto n, but it was on its way out. The Southwestern Association minutes for 18 39 record Samuel Lippincott, Joseph Davis [Samuel Lippincott's son-in-law ], deacons; Obadiah Lippincott, clerk; Jacob Davis, messenger; membershi p, 60. General Conference minutes for 1841 show a membership of 37 with J ames B. Davis, Samuel Lippincott Sr., Joseph Davis Sr., Jesse Babcock [Sim eon Babcock's son], Amos Sutton, Jacob Davis, Joel Babcock [Simeon Babcock 's brother], and James B. Davis, listed as officers. "Angered by a strong temperance resolu tion unanimously adopted by the Southwestern Association in 1841, "the Pike Church rent the mselves from the Association" and refused overtures for return. They with drew from General Conference in 1842 due to the 'fanatical temperance opin ions of the latter.' The last conference report in 1846 lists a disassoci ated membership of 30. The building in the center of town had disappeared by 1 905. The cemetery emained until 1923 when a school was built on the half- acre lot and the graves were carefully added to Asbury Cemetery carved fr om a wooded area on a ridge near Donnel's Creek. Worn, delicately scroll ed headstones for Charity Babcock (1835), first wife of Rev. Simeon Babcoc k, Ester Ayers (1835), Samuel Lippincott (1853) and Jesse Maxson (1857) au thenticate the site of the final resting place for members of the origin al Pike church. "For a period of about sixteen years (1837-1850), two S DB churches coexisted in the North Hampton area: the old Pike church in t he large log meeting house in the center of town and the upstart Temperan ce Reform church probably meeting in homes or Sunday churches."

[HI6425] (Research):Shenandoah Co, VA Tax list 1783-1785 3 in his family both years This Lewis generally has been believed to be the son of Lewis Pence howeve r, the will of Barbara, widow of Jacob , lists a Lewis as a child and Fred erick, called oldest son and heir of Jacob, made a division of Jacob's la nd grant and deeded half of its 262 acres to this Lewis in 1795. Lewis a nd his wife, Barbara, conveyed all but about two acres of it to Emanuel Pe nce, also a son of Jacob, in 1800; it is almost certainly this Lewis, s on of Jacob, who went to Champaign Co by 19 Oct 1820, when he purchased 7 02 acres from his cousin, John Pence (No. 67), son of Henry, for $12,68 0; previously, Lewis and Barbara, on 14 Sep 1819, sold 350 acres of la nd in Shenandoah Co to John Garber for $6,553 and another 168 acres to Cha rles Beazley for $3,780; Lewis served in Captain Michael Reader's compa ny in the Revolution.

PUBLIC RECORDS OF CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, OHIO CHANCERY RECORDS OF THE COURT OF COMMON PLEAS Record Book 8, Pages 437-439 - Filed 16 October 1823 - In Chancery Adam Buroker Vs Lewis Pence Lewis Pence is the father-in-law of Adam Buroker, who married a daughter ( unnamed) of Lewis. In the close of the year 1819, Lewis Pence who ow ns 80 acres of land in Section 8, Township 4, Range 11 (Mad River Tp.), pr oposed that Buroker make improvements, build a barn, clear the land, et c. and then Pence would give Buroker a deed f or the 80 acres. There w as no written agreement and existed wholly in parol (word of mouth). Buro ker took possession of the land and cleared a number of acres, laid more t han 4,000 thousand rails, built a large barn and he believes the improveme nts to amount to more than $500. Buroker entered into an written agreeme nt with John Bloze, another son-in-law of Lewis Pence, which concerned a d ivision fence and Lewis Pence was aware of and in agreement with the docum ent. Lewis Pence employed the county surveyor to survey eighty acres a nd to make out the survey of the plat to Buroker, but Buroker paid for t he survey. Since that time Pence has refused to give him a deed nor wou ld he pay any consideration for the improvements, and further ordered Buro ker to quit the premises. Buroker removed from the property, but he now a sks the court to cause him to be made a deed for the property or to rep ay him for the expense and labor for the improvements. Lewis Pence answered on 27 October 1823 and agreed that there was not a wr itten agreement between himself and Buroker. Lewis also admits that his d aughter is legally married to Buroker, much to his deep regret and mortifi cation as matters have turned due to Buroker's ingovernable temper and cru el disposition towards her. The disagreement between the two men was d ue to the treatment of Buroker's wife (Pence's daughter). Pence relates t hat he told Buroker that he could remain on the land and reap his lab or in peace as the other children, but he was a free man and in a free cou ntry and if he wanted to move he could. As to the improvements that Burok er claims to have made, when he took possession of the property about eigh teen acres had already been cleared and was under a good fence. The impro vements made by Buroker included a small cabin and a little smoke-house, a nd total more or less about two thousand dollars. The court decided that Buroker was not entitled to a deed, but that he w as entitled to labor for improvements and after deducting the value of t he rent while he lived there he was awarded $12.00 from Pence and Pence w as to pay the cost of the taxes which was $41.41. The whole to be paid wit hin 60 days.

Record Book 10, Page 277 - Filed 20 March 1829 Lewis Pence Vs The heirs of Henry Pence, deceased On 21 August 1825, Lewis Pence, "being old and far advanced in life and wi shing to spend the remainder of his life with his son, Henry Pence, th en a resident of Champaign County but who is now deceased" agreed that Lew is "should execute to said Henry a warrantee deed to fifty acres of land ." In exchange Henry Pence would maintain and support Lewis Pence and h is wife. Lewis and his wife (not named) began living with Henry Pen ce on or about I September 1825, and on 30 December 1825 Lewis Pence execu ted the deed for fifty acres. Lewis's wife departed this life shortly aft er I September 1825 (about three months later). Lewis Pence also execut ed a deed to each of his sons for one hundred acres and to each of his dau ghters eighty acres. The portion that Lewis deeded to Henry contained o ne hundred seventy-six acres, which included the extra fifty acres for mai ntainance and an additional twenty-six acres more than he gave the other h eirs. The land is located in Mad River Township, Section 8, Township 4, R ange 11 (Mad River Tp.). Henry Pence died on or about I September 1826, le aving the following heirs: Elizabeth, widow and five minor children, of wh om Elizabeth is the guardian: Barbara, 11 years;Sarah, 9 years; Eliz a, 7 years; Sanders, 5 years; and Margaret, 2 years. Since Henry's deat h, the contract that Lewis made with Henry has not been fully honored by E lizabeth-Pence. Lewis states that he believes that after Henry's esta te is settled that Elizabeth will not be able to fulfill the contract f or maintance for the remainder's of Lewis' life. Lewis asks that a quit c laim be given to him by Henry's heirs for the fifty acres so that he m ay be able to maintain his own care. On 25 March 1829, the case was dropp ed by the action and costs of the complainant (Lewis Pence).

Record Book 10, Page 311 - Filed 21 November 1828 Lewis Pence Vs George Steinbarger Administrator of Henry Pence, deceased On 1 July 1826 Henry Pence became indebted to Lewis Pence for $100 for wor k, labor and diligence of said Lewis Pence before that time. Also, on th at date, Henry was further indebted for another $100 for goods and equipme nt purchased from Lewis. George Steinbarger denies that Henry incurred.t he debt. On 25 October 1828 in the court of David Markley, Justice of t he Peace, Lewis Pence recovered a judgment from George Steinbarger, Admini strator, in the amount of $35.22 and costs of $3.80'-4. George Steinbarg er filed an appeal against the case. On 6 April 1829 the case went befo re a jury: Frederick Baker, Ferrill Baker, Abram Baker, Alexander Beaty, J oseph McClain, John Scott, William Ward, AndrewStaley, David Lung, Benjamin Kite, Robert J. Swam(?) & William Patr ick. The jury found that Henry Pence did not in his lifetime contract wi th Lewis Pence for the amount specified. Therefore, Lewis Pence, by his a ttorney, Daniel S. Bell, asks for a new trial because (1) the verdict w as not according to law, (2) the verdict was contrary to evidence, (3) t he plaintiff has discovered new and material evidence. However, within t he same court term Lewis Pence withdrew his charges for a new trial. T he court decreed that Pence recover nothing from Steinbarger, however, Ste inberger was to recover from Pence the costs of defending himself

Record Book 32, Page 438- Filed 18 February 1868- Petition to Partition Da niel Blose vs John Phillips et al On 10 February 1826 Lewis Pence had deeded 50 acr es of land located in Section 8 Township 4 Range 11 (Mad River Townshi p) to George Myers and Susannah Myers, his wife. Under the deed they we re to hold the land during their lifetimes and if they had any issue th en the land was to be passed on. If they did not have any heirs the land w as to revert to the brothers and sisters of Susannah Pence. George and Sus annah had no heirs. At the time of this suit, Daniel Blose, had, by purcha se, acquired nearly 50 per cent of the interest. The land was sold by t he court and Daniel was the purchaser. He and Mary later moved to McDonough Co, IL, to be near some of their children.(source Richa rd Pence)

[HI6426] (Research):wife of Lewis Pence was Barbara KIBLER, not KILBLINGER. The latter is an error that has been repeated from the index to the marriage bonds of Shenandoah County. There are many deeds showing Barbara, the wife of Lewis Pence, was the daughter of Henry Kibler.

[HI6427] (Research):Adam and his family moved to Kentucky in 1805 and in 1809 to Mad River Tow nship, Champaign County, Ohio. He served during the War of 1812 for six mo nths. Adam was a mechanic, barrel maker, and maker of locks, as well as fa rmer. When he acquired his land, a quarter section in the northwest corn er of section 28, he had to ride all night to Cincinnati to beat out anoth er man from getting the homestead.

THE ADAM AND EVE BUROKER PRINCE FAMILY Adam Prince was born May 6, 1781, in the Massannutten area of Shenandoah C ounty, Virginia. He was one of the three children of Godlove ("Cutlip") a nd Magdalene Crum Printz. His paternal grandfather, Johan Philip Print z, immigrated to Philadelphia from Germany in 1751, eventually settli ng in the area of the Massannutten dubbed "Printz Town." Sometime in the y ears following their immigration, the Printz family changed the German spe lling of its name to the more English spelling, Prince. Eve Buroker, bo rn in 1776, the same year as the United States, was also of German ancestr y. She was a daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth Buracker, who were neighbo rs of the Printzes in Shenandoah County. Her paternal grandparents were M ichael and Eve Buracker, who, like Adam's family were German immigrant s. Like the spelling of the name Prince, the spelling of Buracker went t hrough several evolutions, eventually ending up as Buroker.Adam and Eve we re married September 2, 1802, in Shenandoah County, with Philip Prince ser ving as bondsman for his brother. Adam was twenty-one and Eve, twenty-si x, five years older than her husband. In 1805, three years after their ma rriage, they emigrated to Bourbon County, Kentucky, birthplace of thr ee of their four known children. In 1809, the family was on the move agai n, this time settling in Champaign County, Ohio, where they remained the r est of their lives. Soon after the family arrived in Champaign County, Ad am located land with a fine spring in Mad River Township on which he wish ed to settle. He soon discovered, however, that another settler also h ad eyes on the same land and was already enroute to the land office in Cin cinnati to enter a claim on it. By riding all night, Adam was able to be at his neighbor there. In fact, while he was enroute "home" to his new cl aim, he met this same neighbor still plodding along towards Cincinnat i. No doubt with a deep sense of satisfaction, he informed him the la nd in question was no longer available. The deed Adam Prince finally rece ived was signed by then President James Madison. The Prince tract original ly was covered by a magnificent growth of hard timber that was gradually c leared away to make a tillable farm. For at least one hundred twenty yea rs after their death, the farm remained in the ownership of Adam and Eve 's descendants. Whether or not the family still retains control of the la nd is unknown, as current ownership of the farm has not yet been determine d

A veteran, who served for six months during the War of 1812 as a priva te in Captain Phillip Kiser's Company, Adam Prince was not only a good far mer but also a noted mechanic, lock, and barrelsmith. His wooden lock s, in fact, were well known in Champaign County and much in demand by h is pioneer neighbors because of their ingenious design. The family belong ed to the Lutheran church and reared their children in that faith. The Pr inces had four children: three daughters and a son. Eve Prince died Octo ber 1, 1827, at age 51. Adam survived her by twenty-two years, passing aw ay November 1, 1849. They are both buried in Myrtle Tree Cemetery in Cham paign County's Mad River Township.

After Robert Harper's death, Julia Ann Hill-Harper apparently moved ba ck to Ohio from Indiana (maybe to be closer to her family) and she marri ed Wm. Idle. I know that in the 1860 census Julia age 51 and Wm. age 52 ap pear together with Elmira Idle age 10 and Jas. T. Harper (James) age 11 a nd other older children. James was Robert and Julia's last child. I wou ld guess, because of there are no children younger than Elmira and also fr om Julia's age, that more than likely there were no children produced fr om this marriage.

However, the English version record ed by English speaking clerks, prevailed. After the death of his father in 1794, Godlove became the governor of Printz Town, Virginia, by purch asing the interest of his siblings. On October 8, 1804, Godlove sold his 2 88 acres of land and joined a family exodus to Kentucky, settling in Bourb on County. Because of his ill health, Godlove did not remain in Kentuck y. Family legend says that he begged his sons to take him back to his ho me in Printz Town and when he saw the old homestead again, died.

Godlove. also known as "Cutlip," was a Revolutionary War veteran. He and his wife Magdalene had only three children: Adam, the subject of this narrative who married Eve Buroker; Eve, who married Jacob Pence; and Philip, who married Katherine Gomer.

WILLIAM H. BUROKER

son of David and Sarah (Jenkins) Buroker, a farmer, a pioneer of 1864, was
born in Champaign county, Ohio, in 1856. When only a few months old he was taken
by his parents to Missouri, where he lived for about three years. Five years
were then passed in Davis county, Iowa, after which the family made the long
trip across the plains to Walla Walla county, Washington.
Mr. Buroker finished his education in the public schools here, then went to
the Willamette valley, where he lived on a farm for three years. Returning then
to Walla Walla he took charge of a farm for his father, and he was thus employed
for several years. Subsequently he moved to Umatilla county, Oregon, took a
homestead and pre-emption, and began farming there. After a residence of seven
years in that county, he returned to Walla Walla, and purchased a farm six miles
northeast of that city, where he has lived continuously since. He is, at
present, the owner of a fine tract, containing seven hundred and sixty acres,
and is engaged in raising wheat and barley principally, though he also handles
cattle and hogs. His place is splendidly improved, and well supplied with good
buildings, fences, etc., in fact the evidences of his thrift and energy are
everywhere to be seen around his premises.
Mr. Buroker takes an active and intelligent interest in the public affairs
of his neighborhood, ever displaying a willingness to do his full share for the
promotion of the general well being. He is especially interested in the
maintenance of a good public school in his district, and for the past ten years
has faithfully discharged the duties of school director.
Our subject's marriage was solemnized at a place three miles east of his
present residence, on May 14, 1882, the lady being Miss May Gallagher, who, was
born on the site of the present Dayton, now in Columbia county, but at that time
a part of Walla Walla county. They have four children in their family, namely:
Zenna M., Ina J., Forest L. and Mary E.

[HI6464] (Research):Tremont City, OH,, July 22, 1879 Messrs. Editors: You will confer a special favor upon not only the writer, but a very lar ge circle of friends and relatives, by giving publicity to the following g enealogical record of the Pence family. While on a visit to David Penc e, of Madriver township, the writer obtained from Mr. Pence the family rec ord, which was commenced 118 years ago. Henry Pence, the father and Mary Blimly, the mother, emigrated from Germa ny in their youth. Henry Pence was born A.D. 1740, just 36 years pri or to the Declaration of American Independence, and died A.D. 1826, bei ng 86 years old at his death. Mary Pence died A.D. 1829, in her 80th yea r. Their family consisted of nineteen children, two of whom died in infimc y, and whose names are not give. The other seventeen grew to man and woman hood, were all married, and together with their wives and husbands we re at one time gathered around the family board during the lifetime of bo th parents. The record is in the German language, but was translated by t he Rev. John Pence, as follows, giving their births in their respective or der: George, August 16, 1766; Jacob, Sept. 15, 1767; Henry, Jan. 4, 1768; Abraham, Sept. 7, 1769; Magdalena, Jan. 3, 1771; Susannah, June 4, 1772; John, Jan. 15, 1774; Barbary, Nov. 2, 1775; David, Feb. 4, 1777; Joseph, Sept. 26, 1778; Samuel, Feb. 4, 1780; Anna, Oct. 10, 1781; Isaac, July 21, 1784; Elizabeth, Feb. 22, 1786; Benjamin, April 25, 1787; Mary, June 9, 1789; Reuben, June 28, 1791. The original name was Bentz, but by reason of the German dialect the name stands as above. I will not trespass upon your indulgence by giving anything addition al at present. Yours truly,S.H. Wallace From Urbana Citizen and Gazette 24 July 1879 Astracted by Pat StickleY Printed in CCGS Newsletter Spring 1998 pg26

Henry and Mary Pence settled in the township [Mad River] about 1805. Membe rs of the Pence family who settled in Mad River Twp. were Benjamin, Isaa c, Henry, Abram, John, Samuel and Reuben. In Urbana Twp., Jacob and Jose ph settled. In Fairfield County, David was the only male representative. T he daughters were all settled in Mad River Twp. - Susannah, Annie, Elizabe th, Mary, Magdeline and Barbara. The parents of all these children were am ong the first families that settled here. Henry was born in 1740 and Ma ry Blimly, his wife, in 1746. They emigrated from Germany to America in th eir youth. Two of their children died in infancy and were not named. Conse quently they were the parents of 19 children. (W. H. Beers & Co, 1881, pa ge 724.) No doubt many of the family went in 1805, and perhaps some had gone even e arlier to decide just where the future home would be. Henry Pence's fir st land purchase from the government in Champaign County was dated Dec. 3 1, 1805. Jacob and John Pence, Henry's sons, bought land in the coun ty on Nov. 4, 1805, and Mar. 25, 1806, respectively. Curtis Monroe Pen ce (a grandson of John Pence, son of Henry2 and the author's great grandfa ther) related that his father George said he made the journey from Virgin ia to Ohio when but 18 months old, which would place that family's mo ve in 1805. As stated in the Champaign history, 17 of the children of Hen ry and Mary Pence grew to adulthood. Fifteen of these went to Champaign Co unty, some as late as 1811. Henry's son David went with his in-laws, the R uffners, to Fairfield County, Oh. They were among the followers of Mart in Kauffman Jr. who split with the Baptist Church at Mill Creek and form ed a new congregation at Pleasant Run in Fairfield County. The oldest so n, George, died in Shenandoah County in 1810. George had married Mary Mauc k, a sister to the wife of Abraham Pence, who was the last of Henry's chil dren to go to Champaign County, making the journey in 1811. Isaac, anoth er son of Henry, may have also gone west in 1811.

He was granted 474 acres on the Hawksbill Creek in Frederick Co VA (lat er Shenandoah Co, now Page Co) on 30 Mar 1770. Moved to Mad River Twp, Cha mpaign Co about 1805, along with most of his family, including nieces a nd nephews (the exodus apparently began about 1805 and lasted until 182 0; the last of Henry's sons went in 1811). The will of Henry Pence, Bo ok B, p 47, Champaign Co: "My beloved son-in-law John Norman all my la nd on which I now live containing one hundred and thirty-five acres; Norm an to pay my son Benjamin Pence five hundred dollars, and six hundred a nd seventy-five dollars to my other children within five years after the d eath of my self and wife as follows, to Jacob Pence my eldest son, two dol lars, to the heirs of my son Samuel Pence, decd, two dollars and the balan ce of the six hundred and seventy five dollars the said Norman is to p ay in equal proportion to to the other children Henry Pence, Abraham Penc e, John Pence, David Pence, Joseph Pence, Isaac Pence, Rubin Pence, Susan ah Jenkins, Anna Norman, Elizabeth Stoneberger, Mary Runkle and the two so ns of Barbary Stewart dec'd, Joseph Rosenbarger and Henry Steward, which t wo boys to have one equal share between them." William Runcle and John Nor man, executives, dated 10 Apr 1820, filed 1 Dec 1824. A list of the childr en of Henry Pence and Mary Blimly was made early this century by a descend ant of Henry's son Benjamin in Bartholomew Co IN, no doubt from family rec ords; this same list was published late in the 1880s in a Champaign Co; t he dates on this list match most of the known dates of his childre n, so it appears to be authentic. All of the following children were like ly born on the Hawksbill Creek near Stanley, VA, now Page Co (it was Frede rick Co until 1772 and then became Shenandoah Co and was so for the time t hese Pences were there; Page Co was created in 1832). Children (for more d etails on each of these, with documentation, see The Hawksbill Pence Famil ies):

[HI6468] (Research):DAVID PENCE, retired farmer; P. O. Westville. This gentleman is one of t he oldest men and represents the first families of this county. His fathe r, Abram Pence, came to this county from Shenandoah Co., Va., in 1811, a nd settled on the farm now owned by our subject; he built a log cabin in t he woods that had never been defaced by an ax, save when the Indian in h is hunt for wild honey would fell a tree in which bees were discovere d. He was married in Virginia; before his emigration, to Miss Elizabeth Ma uck. The children are Mary, Abram, Elizabeth and David, who is the gentlem an furnishing the facts for this sketch ; Mary. the eldest is also livi ng and will he 89 years of age in November ; she is the mother of Allen Lo udenback, whose sketch appears in this work. During the boyhood of Davi d, there were Indians still living in the neighborhood, and frequently pla yed with Indian boys, shooting the bow and arrow, etc.; there were freque nt Indian scares previous to this, and one of his uncles, Joseph Mauck, le ft the settlement on account of it; the Indians, however, always treated t he settlers kindly ; families were on the most friendly terms, and all t he neighbors were obliged to help each other in their log-rollings a nd in the erection of their log cabins. Henry and Mary Pence-the grandpare nts of David settled in this township about 1805. The members of the Pen ce family who settled in Mad River Township were Benjamin, Isaac, Henry, A bram, the father of our subject, John, Samuel and Reuben. They emigrated from Germany to America in their youth; t wo of their children died in infancy and were not named, consequently th ey were the parents of nineteen children. David, our subject, was marri ed to Priscilla Frazee in 1831, and has five children living; one child w ho died in infancy. Moses F. married Kate McFarland; Wilson T. wedded Ange line Stienbarger; Abram M. married Mary J. Wheeler; Maggie is the wi fe of W. S. Garrett, and Amanda wedded U. G. Burke. Mr. Pence and his wi fe live entirely at their ease on the home farm, surrounded by their child ren and blessed with plenty of this world's goods. They are both membe rs of the Baptist Church, and, as they are descending the hillside of li fe band in hand, they feel happy in the thought that they are still spar ed to each other.

MARTIN, FREDERICK and HAMILTON PENCE are the children of John and Ma ry F. (Hoffman) Pence, natives of the "Old Dominion," where they were rear ed and married. They moved from Virginia to Champaign County, Ohio, in 182 2. There were five children born to them, and some years after their remov al to the Buckeye State the mother died. The father married for his seco nd wife, Barbara Loudenback, and by this marriage there were nine childre n. The father had been a soldier of the war of 1812, and always followed f arming and was a hard-working, industrious man, and respected and useful c itizen. Martin Pence, son by the first wife, was born in Page County, Va ., July 9, 1818. Frederick, his brother, in the same county and State, Apr il 4, 1820; and Hamilton, in Champaign County, Ohio, January 26, 1822. The se sons received but little or no education, and after the death of the ir mother fared very poorly at the hands of the stepmother. Long before th ey were able, they were compelled to perform the same and as much wo rk as that of full-grown men. Martin left home when about seventeen, and f or some years worked by the day or month, and at anything he could tu rn an honest penny at. His wages were small, and it was only by the harde st work and strictest economy that he succeeded in saving a little mone y. He was married to Miss Barbara Loudenback August 6, 1843. She was bo rn in Champaign County, Ohio, May 8, 1820. From this union were born six c hildren, viz., Noah, John, David, Susanah, Melissa and Josephine. Noah ser ved his country in the late war, in the Eighty-eighth Indiana Volunteer In fantry. He died at Nashville, Tenn., while in his country's service. Mart in lived in Champaign County, Ohio, following farming till 1850, when he c ame to this county and located on the farm he now owns. The place was a ll woods and had no improvements. He now owns 160 acres. He is a Democr at and a member of the Baptist Church. Frederick Pence also went through m any hardships and privations in youth and for years after he came to th is county, which was in 1850. He was fifteen when he left his parental ro of and began the battle of life. Having no education, there was no openi ng but hard, physical labor. He went to work with a will and labored at wh atever he could find to do. He married Miss Susan Jenkins April 26, 184 0. She was born in Champaign County, Ohio, September 12, 1819. From this u nion ten children were born, viz., Philander R., Rose A., Mary F., Nancy J ., Amanda, John W., Bell, Sabra, Tamson and Martha. Five of these childr en are deceased. In 1847, Frederick and his brother Hamilton came to th is county and purchased some land, paying $3.50 per acre for it. They th en went back to Ohio, and in 1850 both came to this county and locat ed on their land. At the time of marriage, Frederick had no property. He h as always worked hard and has accumulated considerable wealth. He now ow ns 120 acres of land and a nice and comfortable home in South Whitle y. He has given liberally to his children. He is a Republican in politic s, and a member of the U. B. Church. Hamilton Pence left home when thirte en years of age, and up to the time of marriage had little or no means ahe ad. He worked by day, month and job. He and brother Frederick would chop c ord wood at 25 cents per cord and make rails at 25 cents per hundred, taki ng in pay wheat, corn whisky or anything they could convert into mone y. In 1850, Hamilton came to this county and located on what is now the Go ble farm, in Cleveland Township. He was married in Champaign County, Ohi o, July 24, 1844, to Miss Sarah Harbour. She was born in Champaign Count y, Ohio, August 8, 1819. From this union there were six children, two of w hom are now living, viz., Allen and Joseph. Those deceased were, Lovina, T amson, Richard and Jason. Allen served his country in the One Hundred a nd Twenty-ninth Indiana Volunteer Infantry during the late war. Hamilton P ence, after his marriage, lived with his father-in-law some time, then mov ed on a small place belonging to him, where he remained until 1845, wh en he moved to Jefferson County, Iowa, but after living there about a yea r, and in Illinois, near Springfield, some months, returned to Ohio, whe re he remained till he came to this county in 1850. After living some yea rs in Cleveland Township and clearing ninety acres of land, he sold it a nd went to Champaign County, Ohio, and purchased his father-in-law's far m, but after a year sold that, and again came to this county, where he h as since resided. He owned 320 acres of land, but has given 160 of it to h is sons. He is a Republican, and a member of the U. B. Church. In taki ng a retrospective view of the life, success and acquirements of the Pen ce brothers, it can be truly said of them that they were self-made men. Th ey began life as very poor boys, but by hard work and economy, coupled wi th strict honesty and straight dealings, have made for themselves and fami lies comfortable homes and secured an enviable reputation among the peop le with whom they have lived, and in the county which they have help ed to improve. They were stanch Union men during the late war, contributi ng over $1,500 for sanitary and other purposes. They are ever ready to he lp the weak and oppressed, and have liberally contributed to all religiou s, educational and other worthy enterprises.

ALLEN LOUDENBACK, farmer; P. O. Urbana. The gentleman of whom we wri te is not only one of the prominent men, but also one of the first childr en born in the county. He was born Aug. 11, 1813, in a cabin, at a time wh en there were a number of Indians living in this vicinity. The last of t he Miami tribe left in 1821 or 1823. Daring their stay they were quite pea ceable, and were engaged in the manufacture of baskets, etc. Allen frequen tly made visits to their wigwams, and can now point out the places where t heir lodges stood. He was personally acquainted with all the Kentons, Pene s, Powells, Hallers, McGrews. McShenys, Mullans and Baggs. These men we re the first settlers of this township, and numerous descendants of so me of these families still remain. The Mad River Valley was a favorite hun ting ground of the Indians, and they left with much reluctance. Squirre ls and deer were very numerous, and the squirrels were especially destruct ive to corn. Mr. Loudenback killed the last wild deer ever seen in Champai gn Co. in the fall of 1837. The farm now owned by him was entered by Arno ld Custar, one of the first men coming here. Every part of it was cover ed with woods, and now it seems almost incredible to believe that the fiel ds covered with waving grain were the home of the savage and the wild dee r. His father, Daniel Loudenback was a native of Shenandoah Co., Va., a nd was married in 1812 to Mary Pence, a representative of one of the fir st families. They had four children-our subject, Jonas Loudenback, Elizabe th and Sarah who died in 1874. Allen Loudenback was married, in 1837, to E lizabeth Kiblinger, of Clark Co. They had eleven children, six of whom a re living Martha, Louis, Abram, Mary, Isabel and William (twins). Daniel L oudenback died May 3,1876. His widow makes her home with her son Allen, a nd has now reached the ripe old age of 89 years. The wife of Allen di ed on June 3, 1874. Allen was two years Township Trustee, and has the abil ity to fill official positions, but refuses to have any further busine ss in that capacity. His first vote was polled for Van Buren, and he has v oted the Democratic ticket ever since.

Source: Prather & Stickley, "Book of Wiant Biographies," 1969, p. 71 A number of Virginia Wiants, Susan's relatives, were involved in the wa r. She had visited them before her marriage, and their welfare was of de ep concern to her. During the conflict, Champaign County Wiants of conscri ption age hired substitutes, and none of the McMorrans affiliated with t he Wiants served as soldiers in that war. When Virginia relatives wrote to St. Paris asking if work could be made av ailable for some of their former slaves, the MeMorrans responded, and f or many years employed them and helped them find housing and jobs. After Christian's death in 1884, Susan continued to live at the homeste ad with her son, John. One of the colored ladies who helped in their ho me was Amanda Carey, whose forebears had lived on the Wiant place at Pleas ant Retreat in Virginia. She spent certain days there baking, cooking a nd cleaning. Lucien Carey helped on the farm, probably as a part-time work er, for his family lived in town. During John McMorran's funeral in 191 5, Lucien stood by the hitching post in the barn yard and wept inconsolabl y. Although he was invited inside, he declined. He still is remembered f or the colts he broke, among them one for John Schooler who was Sidna (Wia nt) McMorran’s son-in-law, and another for Charles Adam Wiant. The latte r, named Lady, was the driving horse that raced trains and was driven by N eva (Wiant) DeWeese through four years of high school in St. Paris. Rafe Bossel, another of the colored men from Virgina, is said to have stay ed the night with the small Jones children after their father died in a tr ain crossing accident and their mother, Mary (McMorran) Jones, narrowly es caped. Yet another head of a Negro family who came to St. Paris during t he Civil War was Dennis Harris. All of these families have since moved els ewhere.
