I am an adopted daughter of a descendant of Fred Pries. The documents were in my grandmother's possession until she passed them on to my mother and I have had them for the past 20 years. Tillie had a brother and sister that came to Washington Co Illinois but I don't have those papers. George Lenz was born in 1878, Emily (Emma) was born in 1876. I have never found what happened to Emily but George is in the 1900 census.

(Research):Her late husband, Samuel, was a seafaring man and was killed aboard the famous U S Chesapeake which was captured by the British Frigate "Shannon" on June 1, 1813. James Lawrence, the Captain of the Chesapeake, who lay wounded as the British were boarding the ship, was the man who rallied his men with the famous words of "Don't give up the ship", which later became the battle cry of the US Navy during the remainder of the War of 1812 and is still heard today.
In 1807 the French and British were again at war with each other and extending that conflict around the world. The United States was a neutral party in the conflict offering supplies and repairs to the navies of both nations. Just prior to June of 1807, two French frigates limped into the harb or of Norfolk having suffered damage in a storm. Both ships were placed in the Gosport Navy yard at Portsmouth, Virginia. The British admiralty upon hearing of the location of the French ships ordered the HMS Leopard (50 guns) to proceed to the Virginia coast and attempt to engage and destroy the French ships upon their departure. Several smaller ships accompanied the Leopard.
During this period the USS Chesapeake (38 guns) was preparing for a deployment to the Mediterranean Sea to become the flag ship there under Commodore James Barron. As the Chesapeake was leaving the bay, the HMS Leopard hailed her and Commodore Barron, extending Naval courtesy, stopped his ship and allowed the British to come on board. The commodore was presented with a request to muster the crew for inspection by the British officers in order to recover British deserters. Commodore Barron refused stating he had no deserters in his crew. Upon the return of the officers to the HMS Leopard, the Leopard immediately unleashed a broad side into the unsuspecting Chesapeake. Being totally unprepared for this attack, the Chesapeake suffered severely under three additional broad sides before having to strike her colors. The British then returned and removed four crew
members and only one turned out to be a deserter from the British servic
At Boston, Captain J. Lawrence took command of Chesapeake 20 May 1813, and on 1 June, put to sea to meet HMS Shannon (38), the crack frigate whose written challenge had just missed Chesapeake 's sailing. With a new untrained crew, Lawrence courageously but unwisely engaged Shannon, and suffered the misfortune of having Chesapeake 's rigging cut away in the early exchange of broadsides in such a manner that she lost maneuverabili y. Lawrence, himself, was mortally wounded, and was carried below. The valiant crew struggled to carry out their captain's last order, "Don't give up the ship!", but were overwhelmed. Chesapeake was taken to Halifax for repairs, and later was taken into the Royal Navy. She was sold at Plymouth, England, in 1820, and broken up.

Landmark Due To Be Razed
One of Mechanicsburg's oldest landmarks- the old A M Cheney home south of town soon will be razed to make way for a modern ranch type structure. Noted for its ballroom on the third floor, the home, now owned by Gale W Boosinger, was the scene of many dances sponsored by the Cheney family 50 years ago. The old structure has 12 1/2 foot ceilings. The Cheneys owned 900 acres of farm land behind the home before the turn of the century.

Years ago she converted and united with the Neer 's Chapel church, retaining her membership to the last. As a bud and bloss om and leaf point to flower and fruit, so did her step lead up to the frui tion of hope and faith and grace, where saints immortal reign. And while h er grief stricken daughter, brother, sister and friends sorrow at her pass ing, they can look through tears and rejoice. While we sing funeral hym ns with pathetic sadness, she sings the songs of triumph. While earthly fri ends are waiting their going, she awaits their home coming. Dear mother, s ister, friend, farewell. We will miss thee but we hope in God's sweet some time to meet Thee where death's chilly breath shall be feared and fe lt no more; where the flowers never fade and farewells are never heard. Th at will be heaven, that will be home. Mrs. Idle leaves to mourn her depart ure a daughter, one brother, and one sister, besides a host of relatives a nd friends. In the early 1800s the native Americans were again forced westward into Io wa. In 1831, Blackhawk, the Sauk chief, led his people in a series of rai ds back into Illinois to reclaim their ancestral lands. The battles that f ollowed were known as the Blackhawk Indian wars. Chief Blackhawk was captu red in 1832 and ordered to a reservation.
The Battle of Bad Axe was fought in Wisconsin, resulting in the defe at of the Sac and Fox Indians by United States troops and brought the Blac khawk War to an end. Chief Blackhawk was captured and taken to Washingt on where he was presented to President Jackson.
Chief Blackhawk addressing the US Govt. during an Indian resettlement program:
"I have heard talk and talk and talk but little or nothing is done; good words do not last long unless they amount to something.
Words do not pay for my dead people... they do not pay for my country... they do not protect my Father's grave.
Good words do not give me back my Children. Good words will not give my people good health or stop them from dying.
I am tired of talk that comes to nothing It makes my Heart sick when i remember all the good words and all the broken promises."

(Research):"Dr. Evilsizer, a neuropsychiatrist" is referred to in a 1964 Missouri Sup reme Court decision regarding an accident involving a tractor trailer of N avajo Freight Lines based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and a Ford truck pul ling a house trailer. The accident occurred on May 5, 1960 on a bridge t wo miles south of Cameron, Missouri on U.S. Highway 69 (north of Kansas Ci ty; this highway is now Interstate 35). Miller v. Harner, 373 S.W.2d 941 ( Mo. 1964) The Navajo truck driver was taken to Albuquerque for medical exa minations, therefore, it appears certain that this is the Dr. Thomas S. Evilsizer, Jr. referred to in two New Mexico cases.

Conversation with daughter Mary Patricia 6/6/99 my dad used to claim that "evilsizer" was a corruption of the Hessian word for "someone from elsace" (ie, alsace-lorraine). he used to pronounce it as "el-soss-shizer" -- i don't remember how it would have been spelled, some-thing like "elsasshaeuser." it's anybody's guess how accurate this is though. a friend of mine who speaks German told me that if that if this were true then it would have been "elsasser" eh
Dr. Thomas S. Evilsizer, Jr. conducted medical examinations in two New Mexico cases. One was a workman's compensation case in which Charles E. Luvaul sought compensation for injuries allegedly sustained while he was emplo yed as an automobile mechanic for A. Ray Barker Motor Company in Bernalillo County (Albuquerque), New Mexico. Luvaul, a Ray Barker Motor Co., 3 84 P.2d 885 (N.M. 1963) In the other case, Dr. Evilsizer testified regarding the mental competency of Edison W. Cliett, who was charged with an armed robbery which occurred in December of 1960 in Albuquerque. Dr. Evilsizer examined Mr. Cliett in 1961 and 1962. State v. Cliett, 449 P.2d 89 (N. M. 1968)

(Research):Logan counties sketch of the life of Mrs. Mary Madden. By Edward L. Morga n
Mary Madden was the oldest daughter of Matthew and Elizabeth Stewart, w ho became residents with of Salem Township, Champagne Co.. Ohio, and the s pring of the year 1804. They settled upon Kings Creek, where Mr. Stewart p urchased from United tates, the northeast quarter of section No. 9, of Tow nship No. 5, of the range 12, for which he paid two dollars per acre. H is youngest son, Matthew Stewart, now owns and lives upon the same form.
Mary was born on the 19th of May, 1800, it was consequently four yea rs of age when her parents settled on Kings Creek, and their, and in the a djacent Township of Union, she passed sixty years of her life. She was mar ried to Nathaniel Craighill, n the year 1819, and by him she had five daug hters. Their names were Eliza, now the wife of John Beatty, of Kennard, th is Co..; Nancy, the wife of Mr. Joseph Miles, of Lewisburg, this Co..; Mar y, the wife of the Mr. Richard Gill, who lives ear Sandusky; Margaret, t he wife of Mr. Bell, of California. These four are still living. Elizabet h, the youngest, died some years ago, on the road to California.
Mr. Craig Hill died on the third of September 1826, aged 27 years, at t he place where Mr. Martin Dickison now lives; and Mary was left a widow wi th five small children to maintain, to feed, to close, to educate by mea ns of our own labor, for they ere to be on to render their widowed moth er any material aid. Surely after the Death of her husband, she mov ed to a small farm on the East side of the Dugan Prairie, and in the joini ng the farm now owned and occupied by her sister Eleanor's usband, Mr. Jes se C. Phillips. Here, in a small log cabin, with her Family of five you ng female children; with a fortitude and firmness that is seldom equale d, she toiled on, through "thick and thin," through the long tedious da ys of summer and along, stormy, dreary nights of winter. But she was equal to the emergenc y, and when she was not employed in other household duties, the constant w orld of her spinning wheel might be heard a she was preparing thread for t he manufacturer of linen r cloth for the comfortable clothing of her child ren who were merrily playing around her. At this time Polly, (for by th is name she was known) was the owner of a fine, large, black mare, named " Sook," which was purchased from my brother eorge. This mare was of a quie t, docile disposition, reliable and safe at all times, and under all circu mstances. In time of winter when there was snow on the ground, Polly wou ld do her visiting and church going with her children, in a jumper drawn by "Sook". In summer she frequently went to church, riding upon t he back of the old mare, equipped with and warm fashioned sides saddle, a nd a blind bridle. Behind her mother, snug Lee seated sideways, might be s een the oldest daughter, hile the youngest child was safely seated on i ts mothers lap. Over the back of the animal was placed a wide strap of lea ther, and to each end of this strap was securely fastened a large, stro ng basket. In one of fees was placed to of the hildren, and in the other t heir remaining child, with a small basket of cooked victuals in its l ap to make them balance. A lovelier site upon earth has never been seen th an this Family group, as they passed along the road. The cheerful smil es nd happy countenances of the well clothed, clean washed youngsters, wi th their well combed heads, bobbing above the brims of their baskets, w as a site booth beautiful and interesting, that can never be excelled.
On the eighth day of January 1832, Mary was married to Perry G. Madden. M r. Madden is still living. He is a native of Virginia, was born in Harr is and Co.. on the fifth of July 1809; came to Ohio in August, 1830. Per ry and Polly (for by hese familiar names they were known to everybody) com menced life together at the lowest round of fortune's ladder. Neither of t hem was blessed with what is called a liberal education, for the mea ns of obtaining it were extremely limited in oday's of their youth. But th ey possessed what then was, and still is of much greater value, healthy, r obust constitutions, and they Will to labor.
It is an old adage that "where there is a Will there is a way," and in th is case it proved true, for by unremitting toil, honest industry, can be j udicious investment of the proceeds of their labor, they eventually beca me wealthy. Married Madden, ife of Perry G. Madden, died on the 11th of M ay 1864, aged 64 years less eight days. Buyer Lance marriage she had sev en children, five of whom were living at the time of her Death. her son Na thaniel, who married Miss McFarland, has since died, eading a widow a nd to sons. Sarah, the oldest daughter, married George Reams, and liv es at the old homestead. Susan Mary did David Cary, and lives near Dugan P rairie. William married a daughter of Martin Dickinson, and lives on a fa rm and that eighborhood. Martha married John Pearce, and lives at Kennar d. All own good farms. Two of their children died in infancy. Perry Madde n, who is known to everybody in this region of the country, is now 63 yea rs of age, large and well formed, eighs about 240 pounds, and is somewh at been a favorite among the ladies, always jovial and full of fun. The we lcome visitor at the hospitable mansion of, Perry Madden is sure to enj oy the comforts of a rich joke, a healthy laugh and a good inner. Marri ed mansion had two sisters and 6 brothers. her sister Eliza is marri ed to William Long, and her sister Eleanor to Jesse C. Phillips. As a mod el wife, mother and neighbor, she had few equals, and surely none were h er superiors.

Champaign Urbana Daily Citizewn Tues July 2 1889 abstracted by Pat Stickley CC GS Newsltter Spring 1995 George N Swisher, one of the most eccentric characters of this part of t he State, died at his home near Union Chapel Monday night last, of gangree n. He had been sick for some time and was a great sufferer. He has had a r ather remarkable career, and was a noted individual. He was born in Marysv ille, KY June 15 1798. At the age of 18 he was brought to this side of t he river at Aberdeen, Brown County. IN 1820 he began boating, which he fol lowed for years. He has followed the Monongahela, Allegheny, Muskingum, Sc ioto, Kanawha. He traveled every foot of the Ohio from one end to the othe r. For twelve years he was on the Mississippi, and made twenty-eight tri ps from St Louis to New Orleans. In the year 1823 he married Eleanore Hes s. His second wife was Lucinda Green, daughter of Rodham Talbott of Shel by County. He never was the father of any children. Quite a sensational ev ent occurred at the funeral. A son of his second wife (named Green) object ed to the burial of George N by the side of his mother, the wife of the de ceased. He finally consented to the burial, but no sooner were the remai ns interred than he and a force of men went to the cemetery and dug up t he reamins of his mother and placed them in another part of the cemetery a longside of his own father. The matter caused some commotion, but quiet h as finally settled and peace has been restored.

This Ann Evilsizer must have been an Evilsizer Widow, as there are no Evil sizers born in New York. There is no Frank Bonham found in Indiana for 1870. See Frank notes for 18 60
(Source-Marriage bonds, Jay Co, IND 1882-1910) b c 1850, married F M Bonh am c 1870. They signed a marriage bond for son William L Bonham 6/14/189 0, Jay Co, Indiana. Ann must have been previously married to an EVILSIZ ER and not born Evilsizer as we find Frank M Bonham in the 1880 Blackfo rd Co, Harrison Co, IN pg 391C. Frank age 43 OH VA OH, Ann H (NY NY NY). C hildren William L, Clara B, Laura E and Charles Bonham. Because there w as another marriage bond signed for daughter Clara 4/15/1888 Book MT1 pg 1 08 naming mother as Ann H "Overhizer". I suggest this Ann is not an Evilsi zer. She does not fit with the familes in the area, nor were any Evilsize rs born in NY.

He is actually a McGehee but never mind that for now. He h ad son Tobias who is there but when Rockingham broke away from Augusta he was in same place. Mcgaugheysville. They founded the town. Ok Willam h ad a bunch of kids.He was a Quaker . Some kids born in PA but the re st in Augusta . They split up with Tobias a rich terrible person staying t here . Father went on the what is now east TN n 1769 Holston area later ca lled New Market a Quaker town but back then was Wautauga NC .Some of his s ons went to NC. Still others to KY. John McGehee /McGaughey one of his so ns is the father of Martha B 1810. I also have lots of Germans in Rockingham where they all congregated . Like Koontz which married McGehee 's and you see the name spelled later as Koonce in NC and then in the sou th as Coons.I have lots of folks connected to my lines in early Rockingha m. found a Jalz"a (transcribers spelled it as Jalsa) KOS"C"AK who arr Ju ne 20 1909 age 13 female from Gola, Croatia next of kin at Gola was grandf ather Jakob KOS"C"AK Her destination was to father Juraj KOS"C"AK Maple S tr. 23, Kenosha, Wisc birthplace Gola There is a v over the Z which giv es it the sound like the S in the word treasure or measure. Just want ed to get back to you about Jalz"a, that is a diminutive of Jalzabet, whi ch is Croatian for... Elizabeth.
She was accompanied by Grga (means Gregory) PAVLOVIC' age 17 from Gola h is next of kin was father Josip (yoseep = Joseph) His destination was to b rother Pavao (=Paul) ??? Ave, Kenosha Wisc birthplace Gola Manifest no te says gaurdian to 14, which is Jelz"a.
The manifest has the letters SI at the beginning of both names which mea ns they went through a Special Inquiry, which was a formal questioning reg arding who they were and where they were going and why. Most likely th is occured due to her being under age and them being unrelated. T he SI is overstamped with Admitted. At that time 16 was consider ed to be "of age" and most had no problem entering the US. Anyone traveli ng alone under age 16 was questioned due to the fact that some folks wou ld send kids to America hoping that someone would take care of them. Ki nd of like leaving the baby at the doorstep!
She was the right age for your Elizabeth. I am not certain what Jalz"a me ans but it is a diminutive or a nickname perhaps. I have attached 2 Wo rd docs which contain both halves of the manifest.
Croatia is a small country and relatively speaking Gola is not close to Za greb, especially in those days. I have found the reason that Zagreb is me ntioned by descendents is that it is the most recognizeable place in Croat ia and also most people coming from Croatia were known as seljaci (sell ya tsee) which means peasant and we all know the stygma attached to that ter m. However as you will see from Jelz"a's ship manifest she was literat e. There was a requirement that all children be schooled for 4 years, dur ing which time they learned the three Rs.

I descend thru this line thru Abel GRIFFITH 's son Evan GRIFFITH & his wife Susannah WITHEROW and then thru their s on Abel Abraham GRIFFITH & his wife Zelphia BRUSTER and then then thru the ir son Abel Abraham GRIFFITH & his wife Ailsey WITHEROW and then thru the ir son Abel Abraham GRIFFITH & his wife Arzelia PRATER.
The only children I have for him were gotten from his Will dated 2 M ay 1811 probated in Dec 1812. And from the book - Chronicles of the Scotch -Irish in Virginia Vols 1, 2 & 3 (Ancestry.com database - The Scots-Iri sh in Virginia Vols 1, 2 & 3). His Will is included in this reference too.
If there was a son named Abel by this Abel GRIFFITH he is more than like ly one of the Abels mentioned in the reference as well as the Abraham ment ioned too. Let me know how you determined there was a son named Abe l. I am interested as there isn't any mention of an Abel GRIFFITH as s on of Abel GRIFFITH in this reference. Belmont Bowler Shot Dead in Lot
A Belmont man was slain early today in the course of a holdup by two men in the parking
lot of a Redwood City bowling alley. Police are investigating the possibility that the suspects arethe same ones that robbed adesk clerk at Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge about a half-hour after the slaying. Shot and killed in the parking lot of Mel's Bowl, 2580 El Camino
Real, about 12:35 a.m., was Gene Edward Evilsizer, 49, of 631 Masonic Way, Belmont, a
machinist for Lenkurt Electric Company. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Sequoia Hospital. Police Chief John R. McDonald, Jr., termed the slaying "senseless," noting that the robbers took Evilsizer's wallet which contained only a few credit cards, a blank check and
no cash. Evilizer's wife, Peggy, told police investigators .that her husband left home about 6:45 p.m. for his weekly 'bowling session with the Lenkurt bowling, team. She said he had only about $10 with him. Police said they found 58 in currency and some change in a front pocket of the victim's trousers. Police Sgt. Edward A. Tennis reported that Evilsizer and
three other members of the bowling team, a man and two women, left Mel's about 9:30
p.m., and drove to a bar where they remained until after midnight. Evilsizer drove one woman
back to the bowling alley in his pickup truck so she could get her car. The other couple departed from the bar in another auto. The woman, a 54-year-old Cupertino resident, told Policeman Fred Granis that Evilsizer waited'in his truck while she went to her car.
She related that after getting in 'her car she turned to' see two men approach Evilsizer's truck
and talk to him. All she heard, the witness told Granis, was one of the men tell Evilsizer, " !
mean it." The woman reported that Evilsizer got out of the truck and she heard what sounded like a gun shot. She said that Evilsizer fell to the ground and one of the men reached down, took the victim's -wallet, and the two walked' off across the parking lot towards Park Street.
Tennis said that the fact the robbers appeared unhurried indicates they hadn't seen the wit-

drove off in her car, finally driving into a service station at Five Points where she called police. At the hospital, doctors found a bullet wound under Evilsizer's left arm. Tennis said the wound caliber gun, possibly a .22 pistol. The bullet apparently entered the chest cavity, killing Evilsizer immediately. The night clerk at Howard Johnson's, 387 Veterans Boulevard, reported to police that two men entered the lobby shortly after 1 a.m., one of them pointing a small caliber pistol at him and ordering him to place money from the cash register in a white paper bag he handed the clerk. Sullivan said he .placed $158 in tne bag, then was ordered to
hand over his wallet and lie down on the floor while the robbers departed. . .In both incidents, the suspects were described as black, one being tall, abou t6-ft., 2-in., and the other shorter, about 5-ft., 8 or 10-in. Both had Afro hair styles. The victim was exceptionally well-liked at Lenkurt. Evilsizer had worked for Lenkurt since March, 1962, and was employed as a shop workman in the Tool and Machine Engineering Dept.of the Model Shop, which builds advance laboratory models of future equipment and experimental devices. He bowled with the Lenkurt Recreation Association, an employee group.

«b»R.C. Bowling Alley Killer Sentenced to Life in Jail«/b»
A Supreior Court Jury decreed life imprisonment for murderer and robber Christopher Zachary
Brown yesterday following 2 1/2 hours of: deliberation. The same jury of five men and seven women found the 20-year-old dsfendant guilty of first degree murder last week in the January 15 holdup slaying of Gene Evilsizer, 49, of Belmont, in the parking lot of Mel's Bowl in Redwood City. In the penalty phase of the trial, it was up to the jury to determine between life imprisonment or the death penalty for Brown. There were a total of 18 law enforcement officers in the courtroom of Judge Robert O. Miller as the jury returned with its decision yesterday. The officers outnumbered the spectators. who on occasion during the trial had filled the courtroom. Deputy District Attorney Marty Taylor said that in talking with some of the jurors that they indicated the defendant's vouthful age was a major factor in favoring life imprisonment rather than the death penalty. "They seemed to think that if there is any possibility of rehabilitation they were going to give him the benefit." Taylor reported. A person convicted of first degree murder is eligible for consideration for parole after seven years in prison. Taylor said that the average length of stay, however, is 15 to 16 years, with a usual range of 12 to 30 years. Judge Miller ordered a«i» «/i»pre-sentence report and ordered that Brown appear July 6 at 9 a.m. for formal sentencing. Although there had been some unverified reports of threats to the jury, both Judge Miller and Taylor said none of the jurors had reported any threats and that there had been no problems in the process of the trial.
