TISSUE THE TISSUE FAMILY The earliest known forefather of Sarah Ann Tissue, mother of J. B. Colborn, was her grandfather, William Tisue. He was an early settler in Brothers Valley Township, Bedford County, Pa which then covered all of Somerset and part of Cambria Counties. This section was opened formally to settlement in 1769, and he lived on a farm which is now a part of Elk Lick Township, Somerset County. In 1778 the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania named him and four other men as Justices for Bedford County to sit as Judges of the Common Pleas and Orphans Court. A year later, he was commissioned as a captain in the Pennsylvania Line, Bedford County. During the Revolutionary War, duty called him to Bedford and other locations away from home. By this time, he owned 600 acres from the Maryland border extending north to Tub Mill Run at West Salisbury. He hired a German Immigrant in Baltimore to tend his farm while he was away, in return for paying the immigrant's ship passage. While Tissue was away, the immigrant, apparently enraged when Mrs. Tissue rejected his advances, murdered the wife and burned the cabin down with her body and an infant child. Two surviving young sons, John and James, were so terrorized by this man that their minds were affected the rest of their lives. By 1784, the Captain had returned from Service, had married Huldah Rush, and had added two children to the family. They had also now moved to a farm in Lower Turkeyfoot Township which laid partially in the Borough of Confluence. It is said that the name Comfluence was chosen for the Borough partially because William Tissue did not like the name Turkeyfoot. William Tissue died in April of 1819. It is said that the cemetery where he was buried was destroyed to erect a building and the markers were thrown on the river bank. He left a will that was never filed at Somerset. His son, Isaac, filed a petition in 1854 citing the basic contents of the will and asking that the estate be settled. Among the heirs listed was the granddaughter Sarah Ann Colborn. From the second marriage of William tissue came eight children: William (2), Elizabeth, Sebastian, Jacob, Edward, Jane, Isaac, and Thankful. The father of Sarah was Jacob Tissue. It is easy to see how Sylvester Colborn would have met Sarah. Jacob Tissues's land is shown on the earliest maps as adjacent to Robert Colborn's place leading down from nearby Draketown to the Youghiogheny River. Not too much is known of Jacob Tissue, but in writing about the Tissue Family, Preston Hinebaugh gives us a little teaser: "If this were not primarily the story of the Captain, I'd have Nellie Brach touch the tale with romance and tell of the son Jacob, coach driver on the National Road, and how it was love at first sight when he met a pretty passenger, Ann Medley, and how they were wed at the watering trough on the Somerfield Hill where the road dips down to the "Yough." Sarah Ann Tissue was the third wife of Sylvester Colborn and the mother of James B. "Pap" Colborn. She bears six children: Louise, John, Martha, Elizabeth, James, and Abram.
